Towards reliable calculations of the correlation function

The correlation function of two identical pions interacting via Coulomb potential is computed for a general case of anisotropic particle's source of finite life time. The effect of halo is taken into account as an additional particle's source of large spatial extension. Due to the Coulomb interaction, the effect of halo is not limited to very small relative momenta but it influences the correlation function in a relatively large domain. The relativistic effects are discussed in detail and it is argued that the calculations have to be performed in the center-of-mass frame of particle's pair where the (nonrelativistic) wave function of particle's relative motion is meaningful. The Bowler-Sinyukov procedure to remove the Coulomb interaction is tested and it is shown to significantly underestimate the source's life time.

What Do Electromagnetic Plasmas Tell Us about Quark-Gluon Plasma?

Since the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) reveals some obvious similarities to the well-known electromagnetic plasma (EMP), an accumulated knowledge on EMP can be used in the QGP studies. After discussing similarities and differences of the two systems, we present theoretical tools which are used to describe the plasmas. The tools include: kinetic theory, hydrodynamic approach and diagrammatic perturbative methods. We consider collective phenomena in the plasma with a particular emphasis on instabilities which crucially influence temporal evolution of the system. Finally, properties of strongly coupled plasma are discussed.

Early stage thermalization via instabilities

Due to anisotropic momentum distributions the parton system produced at the early stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions is unstable with respect to the magnetic plasma modes. The instabilities isotropize the system and thus speed up the process of its equilibration. The whole scenario of the instabilities driven isotropization is reviewed.

Chromo-Hydrodynamic Approach to the Unstable Quark-Gluon Plasma

We derive hydrodynamic-like equations that are applicable to short-time scale color phenomena in the quark-gluon plasma. The equations are solved in the linear response approximation, and the gluon polarization tensor is derived. As an application, we study the collective modes in a two-stream system and find plasma instabilities when the fluid velocity is larger than the speed of sound in the plasma. The chromo-hydrodynamic approach, discussed here in detail, should be considered as simpler over other approaches and well-designed for numerical studies of the dynamics of an unstable quark-gluon plasma.

Correlation of transverse momentum and multiplicity in a superposition model of nucleus-nucleus collisions

In p-p collisions the average transverse momentum is known to be correlated with the multiplicity of produced particles. The correlation is shown to survive in a superposition model of nucleus-nucleus collisions. When properly parameterized, the correlation strength appears to be independent of the collision centrality - it is the same in p-p and central A-A collisions. However, the correlation is strongly suppressed by the centrality fluctuations.

Instabilities driven equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma

Strongly and Weakly Unstable Anisotropic Quark-Gluon Plasma

Using explicit solutions of the QCD transport equations, we construct an effective potential for an anisotropic quark-gluon plasma which under plausible assumptions holds beyond the Hard Loop approximation. The configurations, which are unstable in the linear response approach, are characterized by a negative quadratic term of the effective potential. The signs of higher order terms can be either negative or positive, depending on the parton momentum distribution. In the case of a Gaussian momentum distribution, the potential is negative and unbound from below. Therefore, the modes, which are unstable for gauge fields of small amplitude, remain unstable for arbitrary large amplitudes. We also present an example of a momentum distribution which gives a negative quadratic term of the effective potential but the whole potential has a minimum and it grows for sufficiently large gauge fields. Then, the system is weakly unstable. The character of the instability is important for the dynamical evolution of the plasma system.

Thermalization vs. Isotropization & Azimuthal Fluctuations

Hydrodynamic description requires a local thermodynamic equilibrium of the system under study but an approximate hydrodynamic behaviour is already manifested when a momentum distribution of liquid components is not of equilibrium form but merely isotropic. While the process of equilibration is relatively slow, the parton system becomes isotropic rather fast due to the plasma instabilities. Azimuthal fluctuations observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are argued to distinguish between a fully equilibrated and only isotropic parton system produced in the collision early stage.

Sum rule of the correlation function

We discuss a sum rule satisfied by the correlation function of two particles with small relative momenta. The sum rule, which results from the completeness condition of the quantum states of the two particles, is first derived and then we check how it works in practice. The sum rule is shown to be trivially satisfied by free particle pair, and then there are considered three different systems of interacting particles. We discuss a pair of neutron and proton in the s-wave approximation and the case of the so-called hard spheres with the phase shifts taken into account up to l=4. Finally, the Coulomb system of two charged particles is analyzed.

Transport Theory beyond Binary Collisions

Using the Schwinger-Keldysh technique, we derive the transport equations for a system of quantum scalar fields. We first discuss the general structure of the equations and then their collision terms. Taking into account up to three-loop diagrams in ϕ^3 model and up to four-loop diagrams in ϕ^4 model, we obtain the transport equations which include the contributions of multi-particle collisions and particle production processes, in addition to mean-field effects and binary interactions.

Whitening of the Quark-Gluon Plasma

Parton-parton collisions do not neutralize local color charges in the quark-gluon plasma as they only redistribute the charges among momentum modes. We discuss color diffusion and color conductivity as the processes responsible for the neutralization of the plasma. For this purpose, we first compute the conductivity and diffusion coefficients in the plasma that is significantly colorful. Then, the time evolution of the color density due to the conductivity and diffusion is studied. The conductivity is shown to be much more efficient than the diffusion in neutralizing the plasma at the scale longer than the screening length. Estimates of the characteristic time scales, which are based on close to global equilibrium computations, suggest that first the plasma becomes white and then the momentum degrees of freedom thermalize.

Hard-Loop Effective Action for Anisotropic Plasmas

We generalize the hard-thermal-loop effective action of the equilibrium quark-gluon plasma to a non-equilibrium system which is space-time homogeneous but for which the parton momentum distribution is anisotropic. We show that the manifestly gauge-invariant Braaten-Pisarski form of the effective action can be straightforwardly generalized and we verify that it then generates all n-point functions following from collisionless gauge-covariant transport theory for a homogeneous anisotropic plasma. On the other hand, the Taylor-Wong form of the hard-thermal-loop effective action has a more complicated generalization to the anisotropic case. Already in the simplest case of anisotropic distribution functions, it involves an additional term that is gauge invariant by itself, but nontrivial also in the static limit.

Inaccurate use of asymptotic formulas

The asymptotic form of the plane wave decomposition into spherical waves, which is used to express the scattering amplitude in terms of phase shifts, is incorrect. We explain why and show how to circumvent the mathematical inconsistency.

Local equilibrium of the quark-gluon plasma

Within kinetic theory, we look for local equilibrium configurations of the quark-gluon plasma by maximizing the local entropy. We use the well-established transport equations in the Vlasov limit, supplemented with the Waldmann-Snider collision terms. Two different classes of local equilibrium solutions are found. The first one corresponds to the configurations that comply with the so-called collisional invariants. The second one is given by the distribution functions that cancel the collision terms, representing the most probable binary interactions with soft gluon exchange in the t-channel. The two sets of solutions agree with each other if we go beyond these dominant processes and take into account subleading quark-antiquark annihilation/creation and gluon number non-conserving processes. The local equilibrium state appears to be colorful, as the color charges are not locally neutralized. Properties of such an equilibrium state are analyzed. In particular, the related hydrodynamic equations of a colorful fluid are derived. Possible neutralization processes are also briefly discussed.

Chromodynamic Weibel instabilities in relativistic nuclear collisions

Employing a previously derived formulation, and extending the treatment from purely transverse modes to wave vectors having a longitudinal component, we discuss the prospects for the occurrence of Weibel-type color-current filamentation in high-energy nuclear collisions. Numerical solutions of the dispersion equation for a number of scenarios relevant to RHIC and LHC suggest that modes with (predominantly transverse) wave numbers of several hundred MeV may become moderately agitated during the early collision stage. The emergence of filamentation helps to speed up the equilibration of the parton plasma and it may lead to non-statistical azimuthal patterns in the hadron final state.

Fluctuations of the Elliptic Flow

We suggest to perform systematic measurements of the elliptic flow fluctuations which are sensitive to the early stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions at high-energies. Significant flow fluctuations are shown to be generated due to the formation of topological clusters and development of the filamentation instability. The statistical noise and hydrodynamic fluctuations are also estimated.

QCD effective actions from the solutions of the transport equations

We solve the collisionless transport equations of a quark-gluon plasma interacting through mean chromodynamic fields. The system is assumed to be translation invariant in one or more space-time directions. We present exact solutions that hold if the vector gauge fields in the direction of the translation invariance commute with their covariant derivatives. We also solve the equations perturbatively when the commutation condition is relaxed. Further, we derive the color current and the associated effective action. For the static quasi-equilibrium system, our results reproduce the full one-loop effective action of QCD in the presence of constant background fields, where the above mentioned commutation condition is satisfied.

Measuring charge fluctuations in high-energy nuclear collisions

Various measures of charge fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions are discussed. Advantages of the Phi-measure are demonstrated and its relation to other fluctuation measures is established. To get the relation, Phi is expressed through the moments of multiplicity distribution. We study how the measures act in the case of a `background' model which represents the classical hadron gas in equilibrium. The model assumes statistical particle production constrained by charge conservation. It also takes into account both the effect of incomplete experimental apparatus acceptance and that of tracking inefficiency. The model is shown to approximately agree with the PHENIX and preliminary STAR data on the electric charge fluctuations. Finally, `background-free' measures are discussed.
