On the number of binary quadratic forms having discriminant $1-4p$, $p$ prime

In this paper we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of positive definite binary quadratic forms over $\bZ$ having bounded discriminant $Δ= 1-4p$, with $p$ a prime. We also give a random Euler product model for the distribution of Hurwitz class numbers, which is supported by our formula.

Covariants and simultaneous diagonalization of pairs of ternary quadratic forms, and binary quartic forms

In this paper we prove a correspondence between a canonical degree six covariant of binary quartic forms $F$ and a cubic covariant of a pair of ternary quadratic forms $(f_A, f_B)$. In the process we obtain a canonical way to diagonalize a pair of $n$-ary quadratic forms over any field $K$ of characteristic zero. As a corollary, we give a precise criterion to decide whether a pair of $n$-ary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Q}$ is diagonalizable over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Hilbert's tenth problem for systems of diagonal quadratic forms, and Büchi's problem

In this paper we complete Büchi's proof that there is no decision algorithm for the solubility in integers of arbitrary systems of diagonal quadratic form equations, by proving the assertion that whenever $x_1^2, \cdots, x_5^2$ are five squares such that the second differences satisfy \[x_{k+2}^2 - 2 x_{k+1}^2 + x_k^2 = 2\] for $k = 1,2,3$, then they must be consecutive. This answers a question of J.~Richard~Büchi.

Elliptic curves with a rational 2-torsion point ordered by conductor and the boundedness of average rank

In this paper we refine recent work due to A. Shankar, A. N. Shankar, and X. Wang on counting elliptic curves by conductor to the case of elliptic curves with a rational 2-torsion point. This family is a small family, as opposed to the large families considered by the aforementioned authors. We prove the analogous counting theorem for elliptic curves with so-called square-free index as well as for curves with suitably bounded Szpiro ratios. We note that our assumptions on the size of the Szpiro ratios is less stringent than would be expected by the naive generalization of their approach.

Exponential sums over singular binary quartic forms and applications

We investigate exponential sums over singular binary quartic forms, proving an explicit formula for the finite field Fourier transform of this set. Our formula shares much in common with analogous formulas proved previously for other vector spaces, but also exhibits a striking new feature: the point counting function $a_p(E) = p + 1 - \#E(\mathbb{F}_p)$ associated to an associated elliptic curve makes a prominent appearance. The proof techniques are also new, involving techniques from elementary algebraic geometry and classical invariant theory. As an application to prime number theory, we demonstrate the existence of `many' 2-Selmer elements for elliptic curves with discriminants that are squarefree and have at most four prime factors.

The number of quartic $D_4$-fields with monogenic cubic resolvent ordered by conductor

In this paper, we consider maximal and irreducible quartic orders which arise from integral binary quartic forms, via the construction of Birch and Merriman, and whose field of fractions is a quartic $D_4$-field. By a theorem of M. Wood, such quartic orders may be regarded as quartic $D_4$-fields whose ring of integers has a monogenic cubic resolvent. We shall give the asymptotic number of such objects when ordered by conductor, as well as estimate the asymptotic number of such objects when ordered by discriminant.

Prime values of $f(a,b^2)$ and $f(a,p^2)$, $f$ quadratic

We prove an asymptotic formula for primes of the shape $f(a,b^2)$ with $a,b$ integers and of the shape $f(a,p^2)$ with $p$ prime. Here $f$ is a binary quadratic form with integer coefficients, irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ and has no local obstructions. This refines the seminal work of Friedlander and Iwaniec on primes of the form $x^2 + y^4$ and Heath-Brown and Li on primes of the form $a^2 + p^4$, as well as earlier work of the author with Lam and Schindler on primes of the form $f(a,p)$ with $f$ a positive definite form.

Heights and quantitative arithmetic on stacky curves

In this paper we investigate a family of algebraic stacks, the so-called stacky curves, in the context of the general theory of heights on algebraic stacks due to Ellenberg, Satriano, and Zureick-Brown. We first give an elementary construction of a height which is seen to be dual to theirs. Next we count rational points having bounded E-S-ZB height on a particular stacky curve, answering a question of Ellenberg, Satriano, and Zureick-Brown. We then show that when the Euler characteristic of stacky curves is non-positive, that the E-S-ZB height coming from the anti-canonical divisor class fails to have the Northcott property. Next we prove a generalized version of a conjecture of Vojta, applied to stacky curves with negative Euler characteristic and coarse space $\mathbb{P}^1$, is equivalent to the $abc$-conjecture. Finally, we prove that in the negative characteristic case the purely "stacky" part of the E-S-ZB height exhibits the Northcott property.

The density of rational points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with three stacky points

In this paper we consider the density of rational points on the "stacky" curve $\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{P}^1;0,2;1,2;\infty,2)$ which is $\mathbb{P}^1$ with three half points, with respect to the so-called Ellenberg-Satriano-Zuerick-Brown height. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Ellenberg.

On monic abelian cubics

In this paper we prove the assertion that the number of monic cubic polynomials $F(x) = x^3 + a_2 x^2 + a_1 x + a_0$ with integer coefficients and irreducible, Galois over $\mathbb{Q}$ satisfying $\max\{|a_2|, |a_1|, |a_0|\} \leq X$ is bounded from above by $O(X (\log X)^2)$. We also count the number of abelian monic binary cubic forms with integer coefficients up to a natural equivalence relation ordered by the so-called Bhargava-Shankar height. Finally, we prove an assertion characterizing the splitting field of 2-torsion points of semi-stable abelian elliptic curves

On the $ζ_3$-Pell equation

Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(ζ_3)$, where $ζ_3$ is a primitive root of unity. In this paper we study the distribution of integers $α\in \mathcal{O}_K$ for which the norm equation $N_{K(\sqrt[3]α)/K}(\mathbf{x}) = ζ_3$ is solvable for integers $\mathbf{x} \in \mathcal{O}_{K(\sqrt[3]α)}$. The analogous question for $ζ_2 = -1$ is the well-known negative Pell equation. We also address the natural generalization of Stevenhagen's conjecture on the negative Pell equation in this setting.

Density of power-free values of polynomials II

In this paper we prove that polynomials $F(x_1, \cdots, x_n) \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1, \cdots, x_n]$ of degree $d \geq 3$, satisfying certain hypotheses, take on the expected density of $(d-1)$-free values. This extends the authors' earlier result where a different method implied the similar statement for polynomials of degree $d\geq 5$.

A stratification result for an exponential sum modulo $p^2$

In this note we consider algebraic exponential sums over the values of homogeneous nonsingular polynomials $F(x_1, \cdots, x_n) \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1, \cdots, x_n]$ in the quotient ring $\mathbb{Z}/p^2\mathbb{Z}$. We provide an estimate of this exponential sum and a corresponding stratification of the space $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{F}_p}^n$, which in particular illustrates a general stratification theorem of Fouvry and Katz.

Binary quartic forms with vanishing $J$-invariant

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of irreducible binary quartic forms with integer coefficients with vanishing $J$-invariant and whose Hessians are proportional to the squares of reducible or positive definite binary quadratic form. These results give a case where one is able to count integral orbits inside a relatively open real orbit of a variety closed under a group action of degree at least three.

Uniformity of fibres of period mappings and the $S$-unit equation

In this paper we give a refinement of the method introduced by Lawrence and Venkatesh and thereby showing that their proof of Mordell's conjecture is uniform up to a uniform bound on the number of Galois representations attached to some family of abelian varieties. We are also able to give an unconditional proof of a uniform boundedness statement on the number of solutions to $S$-unit equations, which qualitatively is best possible, recovering a result of Evertse.

The negative Pell equation

By applying methods recently developed by A. Smith with regards to Goldfeld's conjecture, we show that the density of square-free integers $d$ in $[1, N]$ for which the negative Pell equation $x^2 - dy^2 = -1$ has a solution is as predicted by the model of Stevenhagen.
