Nonsingular Bernoulli actions of arbitrary Krieger type

We prove that every infinite amenable group admits Bernoulli actions of any possible Krieger type, including type $II_\infty$ and type $III_0$. We obtain this result as a consequence of general results on the ergodicity and Krieger type of nonsingular Bernoulli actions $G \curvearrowright \prod_{g \in G} (X_0,μ_g)$ with arbitrary base space $X_0$, both for amenable and for nonamenable groups. Earlier work focused on two point base spaces $X_0 = \{0,1\}$, where type $II_\infty$ was proven not to occur.

Ergodicity and type of nonsingular Bernoulli actions

We determine the Krieger type of nonsingular Bernoulli actions $G \curvearrowright \prod_{g \in G} (\{0,1\},μ_g)$. When $G$ is abelian, we do this for arbitrary marginal measures $μ_g$. We prove in particular that the action is never of type II$_\infty$ if $G$ is abelian and not locally finite, answering Krengel's question for $G = \mathbb{Z}$. When $G$ is locally finite, we prove that type II$_\infty$ does arise. For arbitrary countable groups, we assume that the marginal measures stay away from $0$ and $1$. When $G$ has only one end, we prove that the Krieger type is always I, II$_1$ or III$_1$. When $G$ has more than one end, we show that other types always arise. Finally, we solve the conjecture of [VW17] by proving that a group $G$ admits a Bernoulli action of type III$_1$ if and only if $G$ has nontrivial first $L^2$-cohomology.

Classification of regular subalgebras of the hyperfinite II_1 factor

We prove that the regular von Neumann subalgebras $B$ of the hyperfinite II_1 factor $R$ satisfying the condition $B'\cap R=Z(B)$ are completely classified (up to conjugacy by an automorphism of $R$) by the associated discrete measured groupoid $G$. We obtain a similar classification result for triple inclusions $A\subset B \subset R$, where $A$ is a Cartan subalgebra in $R$ and the intermediate von Neumann algebra $B$ is regular in $R$. A key step in proving these results is to show the vanishing cohomology for the associated cocycle actions of $G$ on $B$. We in fact prove two very general vanishing cohomology results for free cocycle actions of amenable discrete measured groupoids on arbitrary tracial von Neumann algebras $B$, resp. Cartan inclusions $A\subset B$. Our work provides a unified approach and generalizations to many known vanishing cohomology and classification results [CFW81], [O85], [ST84], [BG84], [FSZ88], [P18], etc.

Non-classification of free Araki-Woods factors and $τ$-invariants

We define the standard Borel space of free Araki-Woods factors and prove that their isomorphism relation is not classifiable by countable structures. We also prove that equality of $τ$-topologies, arising as invariants of type III factors, as well as coycle and outer conjugacy of actions of abelian groups on free product factors are not classifiable by countable structures.

Property (T) discrete quantum groups and subfactors with triangle presentations

Kazhdan's property (T) has been studied for several discrete group-like structures, including standard invariants of Jones' subfactors and discrete quantum groups. We prove a Zuk-type spectral gap criterion for property (T) in this setting. This allows us to construct a family of property (T) discrete quantum groups, as well as subfactor standard invariants, given by generators and a triangle presentation. These are the first examples of property (T) discrete quantum groups that are not directly related to a discrete group with property (T).

Bernoulli actions of type III_1 and L^2-cohomology

We conjecture that a countable group $G$ admits a nonsingular Bernoulli action of type III$_1$ if and only if the first $L^2$-cohomology of $G$ is nonzero. We prove this conjecture for all groups that admit at least one element of infinite order. We also give numerous explicit examples of type III$_1$ Bernoulli actions of the group of integers and the free groups, with different degrees of ergodicity.

Rigidity for von Neumann algebras given by locally compact groups and their crossed products

We prove the first rigidity and classification theorems for crossed product von Neumann algebras given by actions of non-discrete, locally compact groups. We prove that for arbitrary free probability measure preserving actions of connected simple Lie groups of real rank one, the crossed product has a unique Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. We then deduce a W* strong rigidity theorem for irreducible actions of products of such groups. More generally, our results hold for products of locally compact groups that are nonamenable, weakly amenable and that belong to Ozawa's class S.

L^2-Betti numbers of rigid C*-tensor categories and discrete quantum groups

We compute the $L^2$-Betti numbers of the free $C^*$-tensor categories, which are the representation categories of the universal unitary quantum groups $A_u(F)$. We show that the $L^2$-Betti numbers of the dual of a compact quantum group $G$ are equal to the $L^2$-Betti numbers of the representation category $Rep(G)$ and thus, in particular, invariant under monoidal equivalence. As an application, we obtain several new computations of $L^2$-Betti numbers for discrete quantum groups, including the quantum permutation groups and the free wreath product groups. Finally, we obtain upper bounds for the first $L^2$-Betti number in terms of a generating set of a $C^*$-tensor category.

Strong solidity of free Araki-Woods factors

We show that Shlyakhtenko's free Araki-Woods factors are strongly solid, meaning that for any diffuse amenable von Neumann subalgebra that is the range of a normal conditional expectation, the normalizer remains amenable. This provides the first class of nonamenable strongly solid type III factors.

Classification of a family of non almost periodic free Araki-Woods factors

We obtain a complete classification of a large class of non almost periodic free Araki-Woods factors $Γ(μ,m)"$ up to isomorphism. We do this by showing that free Araki-Woods factors $Γ(μ, m)"$ arising from finite symmetric Borel measures $μ$ on $\mathbf{R}$ whose atomic part $μ_a$ is nonzero and not concentrated on $\{0\}$ have the joint measure class $\mathcal C(\bigvee_{k \geq 1} μ^{\ast k})$ as an invariant. Our key technical result is a deformation/rigidity criterion for the unitary conjugacy of two faithful normal states. We use this to also deduce rigidity and classification theorems for free product von Neumann algebras.

Thin II_1 factors with no Cartan subalgebras

It is a wide open problem to give an intrinsic criterion for a II_1 factor $M$ to admit a Cartan subalgebra $A$. When $A \subset M$ is a Cartan subalgebra, the $A$-bimodule $L^2(M)$ is "simple" in the sense that the left and right action of $A$ generate a maximal abelian subalgebra of $B(L^2(M))$. A II_1 factor $M$ that admits such a subalgebra $A$ is said to be s-thin. Very recently, Popa discovered an intrinsic local criterion for a II_1 factor $M$ to be s-thin and left open the question whether all s-thin II_1 factors admit a Cartan subalgebra. We answer this question negatively by constructing s-thin II_1 factors without Cartan subalgebras.

Cohomology and $L^2$-Betti numbers for subfactors and quasi-regular inclusions

We introduce $L^2$-Betti numbers, as well as a general homology and cohomology theory for the standard invariants of subfactors, through the associated quasi-regular symmetric enveloping inclusion of II_1 factors. We actually develop a (co)homology theory for arbitrary quasi-regular inclusions of von Neumann algebras. For crossed products by countable groups $Γ$, we recover the ordinary (co)homology of $Γ$. For Cartan subalgebras, we recover Gaboriau's $L^2$-Betti numbers for the associated equivalence relation. In this common framework, we prove that the $L^2$-Betti numbers vanish for amenable inclusions and we give cohomological characterizations of property (T), the Haagerup property and amenability. We compute the $L^2$-Betti numbers for the standard invariants of the Temperley-Lieb-Jones subfactors and of the Fuss-Catalan subfactors, as well as for free products and tensor products.

Inner amenability, property Gamma, McDuff II_1 factors and stable equivalence relations

We say that a countable group $G$ is McDuff if it admits a free ergodic probability measure preserving action such that the crossed product is a McDuff II_1 factor. Similarly, $G$ is said to be stable if it admits such an action with the orbit equivalence relation being stable. The McDuff property, stability, inner amenability and property Gamma are subtly related and several implications and non implications were obtained in [Ef73,JS85,Va09,Ki12a,Ki12b]. We complete the picture with the remaining implications and counterexamples.

C*-tensor categories and subfactors for totally disconnected groups

We associate a rigid C*-tensor category $C$ to a totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ and a compact open subgroup $K < G$. We characterize when $C$ has the Haagerup property or property (T), and when $C$ is weakly amenable. When $G$ is compactly generated, we prove that $C$ is essentially equivalent to the planar algebra associated by Jones and Burstein to a group acting on a locally finite bipartite graph. We then concretely realize $C$ as the category of bimodules generated by a hyperfinite subfactor.

On the optimal paving over MASAs in von Neumann algebras

We prove that if $A$ is a singular MASA in a II$_1$ factor $M$ and $ω$ is a free ultrafilter, then for any $x\in M\ominus A$, with $\|x\|\leq 1$, and any $n\geq 2$, there exists a partition of $1$ with projections $p_1, p_2, ..., p_n\in A^ω$ (i.e. a {\it paving}) such that $\|Σ_{i=1}^n p_i x p_i\|\leq 2\sqrt{n-1}/n$, and give examples where this is sharp. Some open problems on optimal pavings are discussed.

Representation theory for subfactors, $λ$-lattices and C*-tensor categories

We develop a representation theory for $λ$-lattices, arising as standard invariants of subfactors, and for rigid C*-tensor categories, including a definition of their universal C*-algebra. We use this to give a systematic account of approximation and rigidity properties for subfactors and tensor categories, like (weak) amenability, the Haagerup property and property (T). We determine all unitary representations of the Temperley-Lieb-Jones $λ$-lattices and prove that they have the Haagerup property and the complete metric approximation property. We also present the first subfactors with property (T) standard invariant and that are not constructed from property (T) groups.

Classification of type III Bernoulli crossed products

Crossed products with noncommutative Bernoulli actions were introduced by Connes as the first examples of full factors of type III. This article provides a complete classification of the factors $(P,ϕ)^{\mathbb{F}_n} \rtimes \mathbb{F}_n$, where $\mathbb{F}_n$ is the free group and P is an amenable factor with an almost periodic state $ϕ$. We show that these factors are completely classified by the rank n of the free group $\mathbb{F}_n$ and Connes's Sd-invariant. We prove similar results for free product groups, as well as for classes of generalized Bernoulli actions.
