Antiferromagnetism of hybrid metamaterials

We analyze a metal-dielectric structure composed of a silicon nanoparticle coupled to a stack of split-ring resonators, and reveal the possibility of optically-induced antiferromagnetic response of such a hybrid meta-molecule with a staggered pattern of the induced magnetization. We show that a hybrid metamaterial created by a periodic lattice of the meta-molecules supports antiferromagnetic modes with a checker-board pattern and the propagation of spin waves, opening new ways for manipulating artificial antiferromagnetism at high frequencies with low-loss materials.

Low-temperature quantum fluctuations in overdamped ratchets

At low temperatures and strong friction the time evolution of the density distribution in position follows a quantum Smoluchowski equation. Recently, also higher-order contributions of quantum fluctuations to drift and diffusion coefficients have been systematically derived. As a non-trivial situation to reveal the impact of subleading quantum corrections and to demonstrate convergence properties of the perturbation series, directed transport in ratchets is studied. It is shown that the perturbation series typically has a non-monotonous behavior. Depending on symmetry properties higher order contributions may even compensate current reversals induced by leading quantum fluctuations. This analysis demonstrates how to consistently treat the dynamics of overdamped quantum systems at low temperatures also in numerical applications.

Quantum Smoluchowski equation: A systematic study

The strong friction regime at low temperatures is analyzed systematically starting from the formally exact path integral expression for the reduced dynamics. This quantum Smoluchowski regime allows for a type of semiclassical treatment in the inverse friction strength so that higher order quantum corrections to the original quantum Smoluchowski equation [PRL 87, 086802 (2001), PRL 101, 11903 (2008)] can be derived. Drift and diffusion coefficients are determined by the equilibrium distribution in position and are directly related to the corresponding action of extremal paths and fluctuations around them. It is shown that the inclusion of higher order corrections reproduces the quantum enhancement above crossover for the decay rate out of a metastable well exactly.

Terahertz surface plasmon polariton propagation and focusing on periodically corrugated metal wires

In this letter we show how the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along a perfectly conducting wire can be tailored by corrugating its surface with a periodic array of radial grooves. In this way, highly localized SPPs can be sustained in the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Importantly, the propagation characteristics of these spoof SPPs can be controlled by the surface geometry, opening the way to important applications such as energy concentration on cylindrical wires and superfocusing using conical structures.

Experimental demonstration of fiber-accessible metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguides for planar energy guiding and sensing

Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75 % from a tapered optical fiber to a carefully designed metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic devices and could lead to the development of highly efficient plasmonic sensors and optical switches.

A low-loss fiber accessible plasmon photonic crystal waveguide for planar energy guiding and sensing

A metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide for electromagnetic energy transport utilizing dispersion engineering to dramatically increase lateral energy confinement via a two-dimensional pattern of Au dots on an optically thin Si membrane is described. Using finite-difference time-domain simulations and coupled-mode theory, we show that phase-matched evanescent excitation from conventional fiber tapers is possible with efficiencies > 90 % for realistic geometries. Energy loss in this waveguide is mainly due to material absorption, allowing for 1/e energy decay distances of about 2 mm for excitation at telecommunication frequencies. This concept can be extended to the visible regime and promises applications in optical energy guiding, optical sensing, and switching.
