Trimaximal mixing with predicted θ_13 from a new type of constrained sequential dominance

Following the recent T2K indication of a sizeable reactor angle, we present a class of models which fix θ_{13} while preserving trimaximal solar mixing. The models are based on a new type of constrained sequential dominance involving new vacuum alignments, along the (1,2,0)^T or (1,0,2)^T directions in flavour space. We show that such alignments are easily achieved using orthogonality, and may replace the role of the subdominant flavon alignment (1,1,1)^T in constrained sequential dominance. In such models, with a normal hierarchical spectrum, the reactor angle is related to a ratio of neutrino masses by θ_{13} = \frac{\sqrt{2}}{3}\frac{m^ν_2}{m^ν_3}, leading to θ_{13} \sim 5^\circ - 6^\circ, while the atmospheric angle is given by the sum rule θ_{23} \approx 45^\circ + \sqrt{2} θ_{13} \cos δ. We find that leptogenesis is unsuppressed due to the violation of form dominance and that the CP violating phase responsible for leptogenesis is precisely equal to the Dirac CP phase δ, providing a direct link between leptogenesis and neutrino mixing in this class of models.

From Flavour to SUSY Flavour Models

If supersymmetry (SUSY) will be discovered, successful models of flavour not only have to provide an explanation of the flavour structure of the Standard Model fermions, but also of the flavour structure of their scalar superpartners. We discuss aspects of such "SUSY flavour" models, towards predicting both flavour structures, in the context of supergravity (SUGRA). We point out the importance of carefully taking into account SUSY-specific effects, such as 1-loop SUSY threshold corrections and canonical normalization, when fitting the model to the data for fermion masses and mixings. This entangles the flavour model with the SUSY parameters and leads to interesting predictions for the sparticle spectrum. We demonstrate these effects by analyzing an example class of flavour models in the framework of an SU(5) Grand Unified Theory with a family symmetry with real triplet representations. For flavour violation through the SUSY soft breaking terms, the class of models realizes a scheme we refer to as "Trilinear Dominance", where flavour violation effects are dominantly induced by the trilinear terms.

Right unitarity triangles and tri-bimaximal mixing from discrete symmetries and unification

We propose new classes of models which predict both tri-bimaximal lepton mixing and a right-angled Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) unitarity triangle, alpha approximately 90 degrees. The ingredients of the models include a supersymmetric (SUSY) unified gauge group such as SU(5), a discrete family symmetry such as A4 or S4, a shaping symmetry including products of Z2 and Z4 groups as well as spontaneous CP violation. We show how the vacuum alignment in such models allows a simple explanation of alpha approximately 90 degrees by a combination of purely real or purely imaginary vacuum expectation values (vevs) of the flavons responsible for family symmetry breaking. This leads to quark mass matrices with 1-3 texture zeros that satisfy the phase sum rule and lepton mass matrices that satisfy the lepton mixing sum rule together with a new prediction that the leptonic CP violating oscillation phase is close to either 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees depending on the model, with neutrino masses being purely real (no complex Majorana phases). This leads to the possibility of having right-angled unitarity triangles in both the quark and lepton sectors.

Measurable Neutrino Mass Scale in A4 x SU(5)

We propose a supersymmetric A4 x SU(5) model of quasi-degenerate neutrinos which predicts the effective neutrino mass m_ee relevant for neutrinoless double beta decay to be proportional to the neutrino mass scale, thereby allowing its determination approximately independently of unknown Majorana phases. Such a natural quasi-degeneracy is achieved by using the A4 (as an example of a non-Abelian family symmetry with real triplet representations) to enforce a type II seesaw contribution to the neutrino mass matrix proportional to the identity. Tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing arises from a type I seesaw contribution via A4 family symmetry and constrained sequential dominance. We perform a numerical fit to the quark and lepton masses and quark mixing where a simple ansatz describing quark CP violation with alpha approximately 90 degrees also leads to the leptonic phase prediction delta_MNS approximately 90 degrees.

Towards Matter Inflation in Heterotic String Theory

Recently, a class of inflation models in supergravity with gauge non-singlet matter fields as the inflaton has been proposed. It is based on a `tribrid' structure in the superpotential and on a Heisenberg symmetry for solving the eta-problem. We suggest that a generalization of this model class may be suitable for realising inflation in heterotic orbifold compactifications, where the Heisenberg symmetry is a property of the tree-level K"ahler potential of untwisted matter fields. We discuss moduli stabilization in this setup and propose a mechanism to stabilize the modulus associated to the inflaton, which respects the symmetry in the large radius limit. Inflation ends via a waterfall phase transition, as in hybrid inflation. We give conditions which have to be satisfied for realising inflation along these lines in the matter sector of heterotic orbifolds.

Sneutrino Hybrid Inflation and Nonthermal Leptogenesis

In sneutrino hybrid inflation the superpartner of one of the right-handed neutrinos involved in the seesaw mechanism plays the role of the inflaton field. It obtains its large mass after the "waterfall" phase transition which ends hybrid inflation. After this phase transition the oscillations of the sneutrino inflaton field may dominate the universe and efficiently produce the baryon asymmetry of the universe via nonthermal leptogenesis. We investigate the conditions under which inflation, with primordial perturbations in accordance with the latest WMAP results, as well as successful nonthermal leptogenesis can be realized simultaneously within the sneutrino hybrid inflation scenario. We point out which requirements successful inflation and leptogenesis impose on the seesaw parameters, i.e. on the Yukawa couplings and the mass of the right-handed (s)neutrino, and derive the predictions for the CMB observables in terms of the right-handed (s)neutrino mass and the other relevant model parameters.

Summary report of MINSIS workshop in Madrid

Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard μ - τ flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement. This document contains the proceedings of the workshop which took place on 10-11 December 2009 in Madrid to discuss both the physics reach as well as the experimental requirements for this proposal.

Gauge Non-Singlet Inflation in SUSY GUTs

We explore the novel possibility that the inflaton responsible for cosmological inflation is a gauge non-singlet in supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). For definiteness we consider SUSY hybrid inflation where we show that the scalar components of gauge non-singlet superfields, together with fields in conjugate representations, may form a D-flat direction suitable for inflation. We apply these ideas to SUSY models with an Abelian gauge group, a Pati-Salam gauge group and finally Grand Unified Theories based on SO(10) where the scalar components of the matter superfields in the $\sixteen$s may combine with a single $\bar {sixteen}$ to form the inflaton, with the right-handed sneutrino direction providing a possible viable trajectory for inflation. Assuming sneutrino inflation, we calculate the one-loop Coleman-Weinberg corrections and the two-loop corrections from gauge interactions giving rise to the "gauge η-problem" and show that both corrections do not spoil inflation, and the monopole problem can be resolved. The usual η-problem arising from supergravity may also be resolved using a Heisenberg symmetry.

New physics searches at near detectors of neutrino oscillation experiments

We systematically investigate the prospects of testing new physics with tau sensitive near detectors at neutrino oscillation facilities. For neutrino beams from pion decay, from the decay of radiative ions, as well as from the decays of muons in a storage ring at a neutrino factory, we discuss which effective operators can lead to new physics effects. Furthermore, we discuss the present bounds on such operators set by other experimental data currently available. For operators with two leptons and two quarks we present the first complete analysis including all relevant operators simultaneously and performing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo fit to the data. We find that these effects can induce tau neutrino appearance probabilities as large as O(10^{-4}), which are within reach of forthcoming experiments. We highlight to which kind of new physics a tau sensitive near detector would be most sensitive.

Quark mixing sum rules and the right unitarity triangle

In analogy with the recently proposed lepton mixing sum rules, we derive quark mixing sum rules for the case of hierarchical quark mass matrices with 1-3 texture zeros, in which the separate up and down type 1-3 mixing angles are approximately zero, and $V_{ub}$ is generated from $V_{cb}$ as a result of 1-2 up type quark mixing. Using the sum rules, we discuss the phenomenological viability of such textures, including up to four texture zeros, and show how the right-angled unitarity triangle, i.e., $α\approx 90^\circ$, can be accounted for by a remarkably simple scheme involving real mass matrices apart from a single element being purely imaginary. In the framework of grand unified theories we show how the quark and lepton mixing sum rules may combine to yield an accurate prediction for the reactor angle.

Non-unitary Leptonic Mixing and Leptogenesis

We investigate the relation between non-unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix and leptogenesis. We discuss how all parameters of the canonical type-I seesaw mechanism can, in principle, be reconstructed from the neutrino mass matrix and the deviation of the effective low-energy leptonic mixing matrix from unitary. When the mass M' of the lightest right-handed neutrino is much lighter than the masses of the others, we show that its decay asymmetries within flavour-dependent leptogenesis can be expressed in terms of two contributions, one depending on the unique dimension five (d=5) operator generating neutrino masses and one depending on the dimension six (d=6) operator associated with non-unitarity. In low-energy seesaw scenarios where small lepton number violation explains the smallness of neutrino masses, the lepton number conserving d=6 operator contribution generically dominates over the d=5 operator contribution which results in a strong enhancement of the flavour-dependent decay asymmetries without any resonance effects. To calculate the produced final baryon asymmetry, the flavour equilibration effects directly related to non-unitarity have to be taken into account. In a simple realization of this non-unitarity driven leptogenesis, the lower bound on M' is found to be about 10^8 GeV at the onset of the strong washout regime, more than one order of magnitude below the bound in "standard" thermal leptogenesis.

Chaotic Inflation in Supergravity with Heisenberg Symmetry

We propose the introduction of a Heisenberg symmetry of the Kahler potential to solve the problems with chaotic inflation in supergravity, as a viable alternative to the use of shift symmetry. The slope of the inflaton potential emerges from a small Heisenberg symmetry breaking term in the superpotential. The modulus field of the Heisenberg symmetry is stabilized and made heavy with the help of the large vacuum energy density during inflation. The observable predictions are indistinguishable from those of typical chaotic inflation models, however the form of the inflationary superpotential considered here may be interpreted in terms of sneutrino inflation arising from certain classes of string theory.

Tribrid Inflation in Supergravity

We propose a novel class of F-term hybrid inflation models in supergravity (SUGRA) where the $η$-problem is resolved using either a Heisenberg symmetry or a shift symmetry of the Kaehler potential. In addition to the inflaton and the waterfall field, this class (referred to as tribrid inflation) contains a third 'driving' field which contributes the large vacuum energy during inflation by its F-term. In contrast to the ''standard'' hybrid scenario, it has several attractive features due to the property of vanishing inflationary superpotential (W_inf=0) during inflation. While the symmetries of the Kaehler potential ensure a flat inflaton potential at tree-level, quantum corrections induced by symmetry breaking terms in the superpotential generate a slope of the potential and lead to a spectral tilt consistent with recent WMAP observations.

GUT predictions for quark and lepton mass ratios

Group theoretical factors from GUT symmetry breaking can lead to predictions for the ratios of quark and lepton masses at the unification scale. Due to supersymmetric (SUSY) threshold corrections the viability of such predictions can depend strongly on the SUSY parameters. We derive possible new predictions for the GUT scale ratios m_μ/m_s, y_τ/y_b and y_t/y_b and compare them with the experimentally allowed ranges for three common SUSY breaking scenarios.

SUGRA Hybrid Inflation with Shift Symmetry

We propose a solution to the eta-problem in supergravity (SUGRA) hybrid inflation using a Nambu-Goldstone-like shift symmetry within a new class of models. The flatness of the tree-level inflaton potential is ensured by shift symmetry invariance of the Kaehler potential, while a small symmetry breaking term in the superpotential gives rise to a slope of the potential at loop-level. In the proposed class of inflation models, potentially dangerous couplings between the inflaton and the moduli sector are avoided. We also discuss under which conditions the predicted spectral index can be in agreement with the best-fit-value of the latest WMAP observation n_s ~ 0.96, corresponding to a hilltop-type inflaton potential at loop-level.

New GUT predictions for quark and lepton mass ratios confronted with phenomenology

Group theoretical factors from GUT symmetry breaking can lead to predictions for the ratios of quark and lepton masses (or Yukawa couplings) at the unification scale. Due to supersymmetric (SUSY) threshold corrections the viability of such predictions can depend strongly on the SUSY parameters. For three common minimal SUSY breaking scenarios with anomaly, gauge and gravity mediation we investigate which GUT scale ratios $m_e/m_d$, $m_μ/m_s$, $y_τ/y_b$ and $y_t/y_b$ are allowed when phenomenological constraints from electroweak precision observables, $B$ physics, $(g-2)_μ$, mass-limits on sparticles from direct searches as well as, optionally, constraints from the observed dark matter density are taken into account. We derive possible new predictions for the GUT scale mass ratios and compare them with the phenomenologically allowed ranges. We find that new GUT scale predictions such as $m_μ/m_s = 9/2$ or 6 and $y_τ/y_b = 3/2$ or 2 are often favoured compared to the ubiquitous relations $m_μ/m_s = 3$ or $y_τ/y_b =1$. They are viable for characteristic SUSY scenarios, testable at the CERN LHC and future colliders.

Probing non-unitary mixing and CP-violation at a Neutrino Factory

A low energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic feature of many extensions of the Standard Model. In such a case, the task of future precision neutrino oscillation experiments is more ambitious than measuring the three mixing angles and the leptonic (Dirac) CP-phase, i.e., the accessible parameters of a unitary leptonic mixing matrix. A non-unitary mixing matrix has 13 parameters that affect neutrino oscillations, out of which four are CP-violating. In the scheme of Minimal Unitarity Violation (MUV) we analyse the potential of a Neutrino Factory for determining or constraining the parameters of the non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix, thereby testing the origin of CP-violation in the lepton sector.

Solving the $η$-Problem in Hybrid Inflation with Heisenberg Symmetry and Stabilized Modulus

We propose a class of models in which the $η$-problem of supersymmetric hybrid inflation is resolved using a Heisenberg symmetry, where the associated modulus field is stabilized and made heavy with the help of the large vacuum energy during inflation without any fine-tuning. The proposed class of models is well motivated both from string theory considerations, since it includes the commonly encountered case of no-scale supergravity Kaehler potential, and from the perspective of particle physics since a natural candidate for the inflaton in this class of models is the right-handed sneutrino which is massless during the inflationary epoch, and subsequently acquires a large mass at the end of inflation. We study a specific example motivated by sneutrino hybrid inflation with no-scale supergravity in some detail, and show that the spectral index may lie within the latest WMAP range, while the tensor-to-scalar ratio is very small.
