Running Neutrino Mass Parameters in See-Saw Scenarios

We systematically analyze quantum corrections in see-saw scenarios, including effects from above the see-saw scales. We derive approximate renormalization group equations for neutrino masses, lepton mixings and CP phases, yielding an analytic understanding and a simple estimate of the size of the effects. Even for hierarchical masses, they often exceed the precision of future experiments. Furthermore, we provide a software package allowing for a convenient numerical renormalization group analysis, with heavy singlets being integrated out successively at their mass thresholds. We also discuss applications to model building and related topics.

Supergraph Techniques and Two-Loop Beta-Functions for Renormalizable and Non-Renormalizable Operators

We present a construction kit for calculating two-loop beta functions in N=1 supersymmetric theories for the operators of the superpotential using supergraph techniques. In particular, it allows to compute the beta functions for every desired, even higher dimensional, operator of the superpotential from the wavefunction renormalization constants of the theory. We apply this method to calculate the two-loop beta functions for the lowest-dimensional effective neutrino mass operator in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and for the Yukawa couplings in the MSSM extended by singlet superfields and the mass matrix for the latter. Our method can be applied to any N=1 supersymmetric theory.

Sequential Dominance

We review the mechanism of sequential right-handed neutrino dominance proposed in the framework of the type I see-saw mechanism to account for bi-large neutrino mixing and a neutrino mass hierarchy in a natural way. We discuss how sequential dominance may also be applied to the right-handed charged leptons, which alternatively allows bi-large lepton mixing from the charged lepton sector. We review how such sequential dominance models may be upgraded to include type II see-saw contributions, resulting in a partially degenerate neutrino mass spectrum with bi-large lepton mixing arising from sequential dominance. We also summarise the model building applications and the phenomenological implications of sequential dominance.

Type II Leptogenesis and the Neutrino Mass Scale

We discuss the effect of the neutrino mass scale on baryogenesis via the out-of-equilibrium decay of the lightest right-handed (s)neutrinos in type II see-saw models. We calculate the type II contributions to the decay asymmetries for minimal scenarios based on the Standard Model and on the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, where the additional direct mass term for the neutrinos arises from a Higgs triplet vacuum expectation value. The result in the supersymmetric case is new and we correct the previous result in the scenario based on the Standard Model. We confirm and generalize our results by calculating the decay asymmetries in an effective approach, which is independent of the realization of the type II contribution. We derive a general upper bound on the decay asymmetry in type II see-saw models and find that it increases with the neutrino mass scale, in sharp contrast to the type I case which leads to an upper bound of about 0.1 eV on the neutrino mass scale. We find a lower bound on the mass of the lightest right-handed neutrino, significantly below the corresponding type I bound for partially degenerate neutrinos. This lower bound decreases with increasing neutrino mass scale, making leptogenesis more consistent with the gravitino constraints in supersymmetric models.

Is there maximal mixing in the lepton sector?

We discuss the potential of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments to determine deviations from maximal ν_μ-ν_τmixing. We compare the obtainable sensitivities to predictions from neutrino mass models and to the size of quantum corrections. We find that the theoretical expectations for deviations are typically well within experimental reach.

Neutrino Mixing from the Charged Lepton Sector with Sequential Right-Handed Lepton Dominance

We systematically analyze the possibility that bi-large lepton mixing originates from the charged lepton sector in models with sequential dominance for the right-handed charged leptons. We derive analytical expressions for the mixing angles and CP phases of the MNS matrix for the case of zero mixing from the neutrino sector, which is arranged for with the help of sequential dominance for the right-handed neutrinos. For small $θ_{13}$, the two large mixing angles $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$ are determined by the Yukawa couplings to the dominant right-handed tau. The mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is then governed by the subdominant right-handed muon Yukawa couplings. Naturally small $θ_{13}$ and sequential right-handed lepton dominance can be realized in type I see-saw models and their type II upgrades via spontaneously broken SO(3) flavour symmetry and real vacuum alignment. We discuss the prediction for $θ_{13}$ in this scenario and corrections to it including the dependence on the neutrino mass scale.

Running Neutrino Masses, Mixings and CP Phases: Analytical Results and Phenomenological Consequences

We derive simple analytical formulae for the renormalization group running of neutrino masses, leptonic mixing angles and CP phases, which allow an easy understanding of the running. Particularly for a small angle theta_13 the expressions become very compact, even when non-vanishing CP phases are present. Using these equations we investigate: (i) the influence of Dirac and Majorana phases on the evolution of all parameters, (ii) the implications of running neutrino parameters for leptogenesis, (iii) changes of the mass bounds from WMAP and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, relevant for high-energy mass models, (iv) the size of radiative corrections to theta_13 and theta_23 and implications for future precision measurements.

Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking by a Neutrino Condensate

We show that the electroweak symmetry can be broken in a natural and phenomenologically acceptable way by a neutrino condensate. Therefore, we assume as particle content only the chiral fermions and gauge bosons of the Standard Model and in addition right-handed neutrinos. A fundamental Higgs field is absent. We assume instead that new interactions exist that can effectively be described as four-fermion interactions and that can become critical in the neutrino sector. We discuss in detail the coupled Dirac-Majorana gap equations which lead to a neutrino condensate, electroweak symmetry breaking and via the dynamical see-saw mechanism to small neutrino masses. We show that the effective Lagrangian is that of the Standard Model with massive neutrinos and with a composite Higgs particle. The mass predictions are consistent with data.

Radiative Generation of the LMA Solution from Small Solar Neutrino Mixing at the GUT Scale

We show that in see-saw models with small or even vanishing lepton mixing angle $θ_{12}$, maximal $θ_{23}$, zero $θ_{13}$ and zero CP phases at the GUT scale, the currently favored LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem can be obtained in a rather natural way by Renormalization Group effects. We find that most of the running takes place in the energy ranges above and between the see-saw scales, unless the charged lepton Yukawa couplings are large, which would correspond to a large $\tan β$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The Renormalization Group evolution of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ is generically larger than the evolution of $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$. A large enhancement occurs for an inverted mass hierarchy and for a regular mass hierarchy with $|m_2 - m_1| \ll |m_2 + m_1|$. We present numerical examples of the evolution of the lepton mixing angles in the Standard Model and the MSSM, in which the current best-fit values of the LMA mixing angles are produced with vanishing solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ at the GUT scale.

Renormalization Group Analysis of Neutrino Mass Parameters

Tools for calculating the Renormalization Group Equations for renormalizable and non-renormalizable operators in various theories are reviewed, which are essential for comparing experimental results with predictions from models beyond the Standard Model. Numerical examples for the running of the lepton mixing angles in models with non-degenerate see-saw scales are shown, in which the best-fit values of the experimentally favored LMA solution are produced from maximal or from vanishing solar neutrino mixing at the GUT scale.

The LMA Solution from Bimaximal Lepton Mixing at the GUT Scale by Renormalization Group Running

We show that in see-saw models with bimaximal lepton mixing at the GUT scale and with zero CP phases, the solar mixing angle theta_{12} generically evolves towards sizably smaller values due to Renormalization Group effects, whereas the evolution of theta_{13} and theta_{23} is comparatively small. The currently favored LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem can thus be obtained in a natural way from bimaximal mixing at the GUT scale. We present numerical examples for the evolution of the leptonic mixing angles in the Standard Model and the MSSM, in which the current best-fit values of the LMA mixing angles are produced. These include a case where the mass eigenstates corresponding to the solar mass squared difference have opposite CP parity.

Neutrino Mass Matrix Running for Non-Degenerate See-Saw Scales

We consider the running of the neutrino mass matrix in the Standard Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended by heavy singlet Majorana neutrinos. Unlike previous studies, we do not assume that all of the heavy mass eigenvalues are degenerate. This leads to various effective theories when the heavy degrees of freedom are integrated out successively. We calculate the Renormalization Group Equations that govern the evolution of the neutrino mass matrix in these effective theories. We show that an appropriate treatment of the singlet mass scales can yield a substantially different result compared to integrating out the singlets at a common intermediate scale.

Coupling the Superstring to a D-Brane Ramond-Ramond Background

We propose a new approach for coupling the type II superstring to the Ramond-Ramond background of D-branes in the RNS formalism, alternative to introducing RR vertex operators. It is based on the mixing between Ramond-Ramond p-form excitations in the closed string spectrum and transversally polarized excitations in the open string spectrum.

Neutrino Mass Operator Renormalization in Two Higgs Doublet Models and the MSSM

In a recent re-analysis of the Standard Model (SM) beta-function for the effective neutrino mass operator, we found that the previous results were not entirely correct. Therefore, we consider the analogous dimension five operators in a class of Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM's) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Deriving the renormalization group equations for these effective operators, we confirm the existing result in the case of the MSSM. Some of our 2HDM results are new, while others differ from earlier calculations. This leads to modifications in the renormalization group evolution of leptonic mixing angles and CP phases in the 2HDM's.

Neutrino Mass Operator Renormalization Revisited

We re-derive the renormalization group equation for the effective coupling of the dimension five operator which corresponds to a Majorana mass matrix for the Standard Model neutrinos. We find a result which differs somewhat from earlier calculations, leading to modifications in the evolution of leptonic mixing angles and CP phases. We also present a general method for calculating beta-functions from counterterms in MS-like renormalization schemes, which works for tensorial quantities.
