Young Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds II

We present the results of a quantitative study of the degree of extension to the boundary of the classical convective core within intermediate mass stars. The basis of our empirical study is the stellar population of four young populous clusters in the Magellanic Clouds which has been detailed in Keller, Bessell & Da Costa (2000). The sample affords a meaningful comparison with theoretical scenarios with varying degrees of convective core overshoot and binary star fraction. Two critical properties of the population, the main-sequence luminosity function and the number of evolved stars, form the basis of our comparison between the observed data set and that simulated from the stellar evolutionary models. On the basis of this comparison we conclude that the case of no convective core overshoot is excluded at a 2 sigma level.

WFPC2 Imaging of Young Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds

We have carried out Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 F160BW, F555W and F656N imaging of four young populous clusters: NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We report photometric results for these four clusters, including identification using photometric colours of the cluster Be star population. We present theoretical WFPC2 and broad band colours and bolometric corrections for LMC and SMC metallicities. The use of the far-UV F160BW filter enables accurate determination of the effective temperatures for stars in the vicinity of the main sequence turnoff and on the unevolved main sequence.

Infrared Photometry of Red Supergiants in Young Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds

We present broad-band infrared photometry for 52 late-type supergiants in the young Magellanic Clouds clusters NGC 330, NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100. Standard models are seen to differ in the temperature they predict for the red supergiant population on the order of 300K. It appears that these differences most probably due to the calibration of the mixing-length parameter, $α_{P}$, in the outermost layers of the stellar envelope. Due to the apparent model dependent nature of $α_{P}$ we do not quantitatively compare $α_{P}$ between models. Qualitatively, we find that $α_{P}$ decreases with increased stellar mass within standard models. We do not find evidence for a metallicity dependence of $α_{P}$.

Spectroscopy of Be stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 330

The presence of an anomalously large population of Be stars in the young cluster NGC 330 in the SMC has been noted by Feast (1972), Bessell & Wood (1993), Grebel (1996) and most recently Keller et al. (1998). We present results from follow-up medium resolution spectra of the bright Be stars identified in Keller et al. (1998) and in the spectroscopic study of Mazzali et al. (1996). We find that the study of Mazzali et al. has overestimated the number of Be stars within NGC 330. Many of the bright B type stars identified by Mazzali et al. as Be stars show no signs of emission after correction for the diffuse HII emission pervading the cluster field. In the study of Mazzali et al. (1996) evidence is presented suggesting that all Be stars in NGC 330 have a common inclination of their rotation axes to the line of sight. For our sample of Be stars we present the emission equivalent widths and observed rotational velocities. An examination of these quantities shows that there is no evidence of a preferential alignment of the rotational axes, rather we are observing a population with random rotational axis alignment and disk size.
