Holographic realization of higher-spin Carrollian free fields

We provide a holographic bulk realization of Carrollian free-field structures arising in three-dimensional asymptotically flat (higher-spin) gravity. We construct a class of boundary conditions that generalizes the diagonal gauge of Anti-de Sitter to flat spacetimes. We show that the associated asymptotic symmetries decompose into genuine physical transformations and pure gauge redundancies, the latter being generated by Carrollian screening charges. This structure leads to a bulk-born realization of Carrollian Miura transformations, expressing physical observables in terms of celestial free scalars. Our results establish a concrete link between flat space (higher-spin) gravity and a Carrollian Coulomb gas description, thereby providing a promising route toward the quantization of flat holography.

Carrollian quantum states and flat space holography

We study free Carrollian quantum field theories from an algebraic perspective and explore their implications for flat space holography. As explicit examples, we construct the electric and magnetic Carrollian Weyl algebras obtained from Carroll limits of the relativistic scalar field and analyze their states, including vacuum and thermal configurations. For the massive electric theory, we find a regular Carroll-invariant vacuum state and a regular KMS state, yielding a consistent Carrollian thermodynamic system. By contrast, the massless electric and magnetic theories are more subtle: depending on the quantization, they admit either no regular distinguished vacuum or only nonregular Carroll-invariant ground states, while still supporting nonregular thermal states. We further analyze alternative classes of states in the massless electric theory, including spatially homogeneous quasifree pure states and Sorkin--Johnston states. Motivated by these results, we discuss consequences for flat space holography. We construct a well-defined state relevant for Carrollian holography whose Hilbert-space representation factorizes into a standard Fock sector and a nonseparable zero-mode sector, thereby highlighting the role of infrared degrees of freedom in the boundary theory.

Free-field construction of Carrollian $W_N$-algebras

We study Carrollian contractions of $W_N$-algebras from a free-field perspective. Using a contraction of the Miura transformation, we obtain explicit free-field realizations of the resulting Carrollian $W_N$-algebras. At the classical level, they are isomorphic to the Galilean $W_N$-algebras. In the quantum case, we distinguish between two Carrollian constructions: a flipped Carrollian contraction, where the time direction is reversed in one sector, and a symmetric contraction. The flipped construction yields a quantum algebra isomorphic to the Galilean one, whereas the symmetric construction produces a distinct quantum Carrollian $W_N$-algebra whose basic structure constants are identical to those of the classical Carrollian $W_N$-algebra. These algebras provide a natural framework for studying extended symmetries in Carrollian conformal field theories, motivated by recent developments in flat space holography. Our construction provides tools for developing the representation theory of Carrollian (and Galilean) $W_N$-algebras using free-field techniques.

Higher-spin gauge theories in three spacetime dimensions

These lecture notes provide an introduction to higher-spin gauge theories in three spacetime dimensions, with a focus on their asymptotic symmetries, their holographic description in terms of conformal field theories with W-symmetries as well as on their couplings to scalar matter.

Boundary Carrollian CFTs and Open Null Strings

We consider Carrollian conformal field theories in two dimensions and construct the boundary Carrollian conformal algebra (BCCA), opening up innumerable possibilities for further studies, given the growing relevance of Carrollian symmetries. We prove that the BCCA emerges by contracting a single copy of the Virasoro algebra. As an application, we construct, for the first time, open null strings and show that, for Dirichlet boundary conditions, we recover the BCCA as the algebra of constraints. We finally reconstruct our string results by taking the null limit of tensile open strings.

Interactions of massless fermionic fields in three dimensions

All independent interaction vertices involving massless (Fang--Fronsdal) fermions in three dimensions are classified, completing the classification of interactions of massless fields of any spin. Similarly to the bosonic case, we get no independent vertices at quartic or higher order in the fields involving fields with spin $s\geq 3/2$, and cubic vertices only for spins satisfying triangle inequalities, apart from the cases involving (matter) fields with spin $s\leq 1$. Differently from the bosonic cases, we get only one vertex for each triple of spins with two Majorana fermions and one boson, which is parity even (odd) when the sum of the spins of all fields involved is odd (even). When the two Majorana fermions are identical, their coupling to an odd-spin boson is trivialized. We comment on the non-trivial holographic dictionary relating these vertices to $CFT$ correlators in two dimensions.

Exploring the gravity sector of emergent higher-spin gravity: effective action and a solution

We elaborate the description of the semi-classical gravity sector of Yang-Mills matrix models on a covariant quantum FLRW background. The basic geometric structure is a frame, which arises from the Poisson structure on an underlying $S^2$ bundle over space-time. The equations of motion for the associated Weitzenböck torsion obtained in arXiv:2002.02742 are rewritten in the form of Yang-Mills-type equations for the frame. An effective action is found which reproduces these equations of motion, which contains an Einstein-Hilbert term coupled to a dilaton, an axion and a Maxwell-type term for the dynamical frame. An explicit rotationally invariant solution is found, which describes a gravitational field coupled to the dilaton.

Modelling interface factorizations between Landau-Ginzburg models as module functors

We study the fusion of B-type interfaces between N=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models. Such interfaces can be described by matrix factorizations of the difference of the superpotentials, and their fusion is modelled by the tensor product of the factorizations. The effect of fusing a fixed interface gives rise to a functor on the category of matrix factorizations. For at least some interfaces, this can be lifted to a functor on the category of modules over polynomial rings. These fusion functors provide an alternative way of modelling a class of interfaces between Landau-Ginzburg models, which characterizes interfaces through their fusion properties. Interface fields correspond to morphisms between fusion functors that can be defined via a Hochschild-type cohomology. This leads to a strict monoidal supercategory of fusion functors, where horizontal composition is given by composition of functors. The category of fusion functors can be related to the category of matrix factorizations by a functor that maps a fusion functor to the corresponding interface factorization. It is not faithful, but we prove that it is full for polynomial rings in one variable. The description of interfaces in terms of fusion functors has the advantage that fusion of interfaces becomes simple. It provides a computational tool to evaluate tensor products of matrix factorizations, and could be applied for example in Kazama-Suzuki models to analyze fusion categories of rational defects, or in the context of Khovanov-Rozansky link homology.

Fusion of interfaces in Landau-Ginzburg models: a functorial approach

We investigate the fusion of B-type interfaces in two-dimensional supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models. In particular, we propose to describe the fusion of an interface in terms of a fusion functor that acts on the category of modules of the underlying polynomial rings of chiral superfields. This uplift of a functor on the category of matrix factorisations simplifies the actual computation of interface fusion. Besides a brief discussion of minimal models, we illustrate the power of this approach in the SU(3)/U(2) Kazama-Suzuki model where we find fusion functors for a set of elementary topological defects from which all rational B-type topological defects can be generated.

Restrictions for $n$-Point Vertices in Higher-Spin Theories

We give a simple classification of the independent $n$-point interaction vertices for bosonic higher-spin gauge fields in $d$-dimensional Minkowski space-times. We first give a characterisation of such vertices for large dimensions, $d \geq 2n - 1$, where one does not have to consider Schouten identities due to over-antisymmetrisation of space-time indices. When the dimension is lowered, such identities have to be considered, but their appearance only leads to equivalences of large-$d$ vertices and does not lead to new types of vertices. We consider the case of low dimensions, $d<n$, in detail, where the large number of Schouten identities leads to strong restrictions on independent vertices. We also comment on the generalisation of our results to the intermediate case $n \leq d \leq 2n - 2$. In all cases, the independent vertices are expressed in terms of elementary manifestly gauge-invariant quantities, suggesting that no deformations of the gauge transformations are induced.

Vertex-Constraints in 3D Higher Spin Theories

We analyse the constraints imposed by gauge invariance on higher-order interactions between massless bosonic fields in three-dimensional higher-spin gravities. We show that vertices of quartic and higher order that are independent of the cubic ones can only involve scalars and Maxwell fields. As a consequence, the full non-linear interactions of massless higher-spin fields are completely fixed by the cubic vertex.

Constraints for Three-Dimensional Higher-Spin Interactions and Conformal Correlators

In the context of higher-spin holography, we compare the classification of cubic interaction vertices for higher-spin gravity theories in three dimensions to the possible three-point correlation functions of conserved higher-spin currents in two-dimensional conformal field theories. In both cases, the allowed structures are governed by triangle inequalities for the involved spins. It is established that higher-order correlators satisfy similar polygon inequalities and that the same inequalities are valid for higher-order continuations of cubic vertices in the three-dimensional higher-spin gravity.

Quantizing higher-spin gravity in free-field variables

We study the formulation of massless higher-spin gravity on AdS$_3$ in a gauge in which the fundamental variables satisfy free field Poisson brackets. This gauge choice leaves a small portion of the gauge freedom unfixed, which should be further quotiented out. We show that doing so leads to a bulk version of the Coulomb gas formalism for $W_N$ CFT's: the generators of the residual gauge symmetries are the classical limits of screening charges, while the gauge-invariant observables are classical $W_N$ charges. Quantization in these variables can be carried out using standard techniques and makes manifest a remnant of the triality symmetry of $W_\infty[λ]$. This symmetry can be used to argue that the theory should be supplemented with additional matter content which is precisely that of the Prokushkin-Vasiliev theory. As a further application, we use our formulation to quantize a class of conical surplus solutions and confirm the conjecture that these are dual to specific degenerate $W_N$ primaries, to all orders in the large central charge expansion.

The Lorentz Anomaly via Operator Product Expansion

The emergence of a critical dimension is one of the most striking features of string theory. One way to obtain it is by demanding closure of the Lorentz algebra in the light-cone gauge quantisation, as discovered for bosonic strings more than fourty years ago. We give a detailed derivation of this classical result based on the operator product expansion on the Lorentzian world-sheet.

Metric- and frame-like higher-spin gauge theories in three dimensions

We study the relation between the frame-like and metric-like formulation of higher-spin gauge theories in three space-time dimensions. We concentrate on the theory that is described by an SL(3) x SL(3) Chern-Simons theory in the frame-like formulation. The metric-like theory is obtained by eliminating the generalised spin connection by its equation of motion, and by expressing everything in terms of the metric and a spin-3 Fronsdal field. We give an exact map between fields and gauge parameters in both formulations. To work out the gauge transformations explicitly in terms of metric-like variables, we have to make a perturbative expansion in the spin-3 field. We describe an algorithm how to do this systematically, and we work out the gauge transformations to cubic order in the spin-3 field. We use these results to determine the gauge algebra to this order, and explain why the commutator of two spin-3 transformations only closes on-shell.

The large level limit of Kazama-Suzuki models

Limits of families of conformal field theories are of interest in the context of AdS/CFT dualities. We explore here the large level limit of the two-dimensional N=(2,2) superconformal W_{n+1} minimal models that appear in the context of the supersymmetric higher-spin AdS3/CFT2 duality. These models are constructed as Kazama-Suzuki coset models of the form SU(n+1)/U(n). We determine a family of boundary conditions in the limit theories, and use the modular bootstrap to obtain the full bulk spectrum of N=2 super-W_{n+1} primaries in the theory. We also confirm the identification of this limit theory as the continuous orbifold C^n/U(n) that was discussed recently.

Matrix factorisations for rational boundary conditions by defect fusion

A large class of two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ superconformal field theories can be understood as IR fixed-points of Landau-Ginzburg models. In particular, there are rational conformal field theories that also have a Landau-Ginzburg description. To understand better the relation between the structures in the rational conformal field theory and in the Landau-Ginzburg theory, we investigate how rational B-type boundary conditions are realised as matrix factorisations in the $SU(3)/U(2)$ Grassmannian Kazama-Suzuki model. As a tool to generate the matrix factorisations we make use of a particular interface between the Kazama-Suzuki model and products of minimal models, whose fusion can be realised as a simple functor on ring modules. This allows us to formulate a proposal for all matrix factorisations corresponding to rational boundary conditions in the $SU(3)/U(2)$ model.

Towards metric-like higher-spin gauge theories in three dimensions

We consider the coupling of a symmetric spin-3 gauge field to three-dimensional gravity in a second order metric-like formulation. The action that corresponds to an SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons theory in the frame-like formulation is identified to quadratic order in the spin-3 field. We apply our result to compute corrections to the area law for higher-spin black holes using Wald's entropy formula.
