Prediction of a novel monoclinic carbon allotrope

A novel allotrope of carbon with $P2/m$ symmetry was identified during an \emph{ab-initio} minima-hopping structural search which we call $M10$-carbon. This structure is predicted to be more stable than graphite at pressures above 14.4 GPa and consists purely of $sp^3$ bonds. It has a high bulk modulus and is almost as hard as diamond. A comparison of the simulated X-ray diffraction pattern shows a good agreement with experimental results from cold compressed graphite.

The crystal structure of cold compressed graphite

Through a systematic structural search we found an allotrope of carbon with Cmmm symmetry which we predict to be more stable than graphite for pressures above 10 GPa. This material, which we refer to as Z-carbon, is formed by pure sp3 bonds and is the only carbon allotrope which provides an excellent match to unexplained features in experimental X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra of graphite under pressure. The transition from graphite to Z-carbon can occur through simple sliding and buckling of graphene sheets. Our calculations predict that Z-carbon is a transparent wide band gap semiconductor with a hardness comparable to diamond.

The effect of ionization on the global minima of small and medium sized silicon and magnesium clusters

We re-examine the question of whether the geometrical ground state of neutral and ionized clusters are identical. Using a well defined criterion for being "identical" together, the extensive sampling methods on a potential energy surface calculated by density functional theory, we show that the ground states are in general different. This behavior is to be expected whenever there are metastable configurations which are close in energy to the ground state, but it disagrees with previous studies.

The energy landscape of fullerene materials: a comparison between boron, boron-nitride and carbon

Using the minima hopping global geometry optimization method on the density functional potential energy surface we study medium size and large boron clusters. Even though for isolated medium size clusters the ground state is a cage like structure they are unstable against external perturbations such as contact with other clusters. The energy landscape of larger boron clusters is glass like and has a large number of structures which are lower in energy than the cages. This is in contrast to carbon and boron nitride systems which can be clearly identified as structure seekers in our minima hopping runs. The differences in the potential energy landscape explain why carbon and boron nitride systems are found in nature whereas pure boron fullerenes have not been found.

Crystal structure prediction using the Minima Hopping method

A structure prediction method is presented based on the Minima Hopping method. Optimized moves on the configurational enthalpy surface are performed to escape local minima using variable cell shape molecular dynamics by aligning the initial atomic and cell velocities to low curvature directions of the current minimum. The method is applied to both silicon crystals and binary Lennard-Jones mixtures and the results are compared to previous investigations. It is shown that a high success rate is achieved and a reliable prediction of unknown ground state structures is possible.

Efficient moves for global geometry optimization methods and their application to binary systems

We show that molecular dynamics based moves in the Minima Hopping (MH) method are more efficient than saddle point crossing moves which select the lowest possible saddle point. For binary systems we incorporate identity exchange moves in a way that allows to avoid the generation of high energy configurations. Using this modified Minima Hopping method we reexamine the binary Lennard Jones (BLJ) benchmark system with up to 100 atoms and we find a large number of new putative global minima structures.

Structural Metastability of Endohedral Silicon Fullerenes

Endohedrally doped Si20 fullerenes appear as appealing building blocks for nanoscale materials. We investigate their structural stability with an unbiased and systematic global geometry optimization method within density-functional theory. For a wide range of metal doping atoms, it was sufficient to explore the Born Oppenheimer surface for only a moderate number of local minima to find structures that clearly differ from the initial endohedral cages, but are considerably more favorable in terms of energy. Previously proposed structures are thus all metastable.

The energy landscape of silicon systems and its description by force fields, tight binding schemes, density functional methods and Quantum Monte Carlo methods

The accuracy of the energy landscape of silicon systems obtained from various density functional methods, a tight binding scheme and force fields is studied. Quantum Monte Carlo results serve as quasi exact reference values. In addition to the well known accuracy of DFT methods for geometric ground states and metastable configurations we find that DFT methods give a similar accuracy for transition states and thus a good overall description of the energy landscape. On the other hand, force fields give a very poor description of the landscape that are in most cases too rugged and contain many fake local minima and saddle points or ones that have the wrong height.

Density Functional Theory calculation on many-cores hybrid CPU-GPU architectures

The implementation of a full electronic structure calculation code on a hybrid parallel architecture with Graphic Processing Units (GPU) is presented. The code which is on the basis of our implementation is a GNU-GPL code based on Daubechies wavelets. It shows very good performances, systematic convergence properties and an excellent efficiency on parallel computers. Our GPU-based acceleration fully preserves all these properties. In particular, the code is able to run on many cores which may or may not have a GPU associated. It is thus able to run on parallel and massive parallel hybrid environment, also with a non-homogeneous ratio CPU/GPU. With double precision calculations, we may achieve considerable speedup, between a factor of 20 for some operations and a factor of 6 for the whole DFT code.

Structural stability of the $B_{80}$ fullerene against defect formation

Using a systematic search algorithm we identify several types of point defects in the boron fullerene with 80 atoms. All these point defect leave the cage structure intact. In addition the cage structure is also very stable with respect to elastic deformations and addition or removal of atoms.

Structural fuzziness of large gold clusters

The energetic ground state of gold clusters with up to 314 atoms consists of rather complicated geometries that have only a weak resemblance to the perfect icosahedra, decahedra and octahedra that are encountered for some magic numbers. The structure changes in most cases completely by the addition of a single atom. Other low energy structures are so close in energy that their Boltzmann weight is not negligible at room temperature.

The performance of Minima Hopping and Evolutionary Algorithms for cluster structure prediction

We compare Evolutionary Algorithms with Minima Hopping for global optimization in the field of cluster structure prediction. We introduce a new {\em average offspring} recombination operator and compare it with previously used operators. Minima Hopping is improved with a {\em softening} method and a stronger feedback mechanism. Test systems are atomic clusters with Lennard-Jones interaction as well as silicon and gold clusters described by force fields. The improved Minima Hopping is found to be well-suited to all these homoatomic problems. The evolutionary algorithm is more efficient for systems with compact and symmetric ground states, including LJ$_{150}$, but it fails for systems with very complex energy landscapes and asymmetric ground states, such as LJ$_{75}$ and silicon clusters with more than 30 atoms. Both successes and failures of the evolutionary algorithm suggest ways for its improvement.

Daubechies wavelets as a basis set for density functional pseudopotential calculations

Daubechies wavelets are a powerful systematic basis set for electronic structure calculations because they are orthogonal and localized both in real and Fourier space. We describe in detail how this basis set can be used to obtain a highly efficient and accurate method for density functional electronic structure calculations. An implementation of this method is available in the ABINIT free software package. This code shows high systematic convergence properties, very good performances and an excellent efficiency for parallel calculations.

A Particle-Particle, Particle-Density (P3D) algorithm for the calculation of electrostatic interactions of particles with slab-like geometry

We present a fast and accurate method to calculate the electrostatic energy and forces of interacting particles with the boundary conditions appropriate to surfaces, i.e periodic in the two directions parallel to the surface and free in the perpendicular direction. In the spirit of the Ewald method the problem is divided into a short range and long range part. The charge density responsible for the long range part is represented by plane waves in the periodic directions and by finite elements in the non-periodic direction. Our method has computational complexity of O(N_g log(N_g)) with a very small prefactor, where N_g is the number of grid points.

A Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle for molecular dynamics trajectories and its implications for global optimization

The Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle that is valid for a chemical reaction that proceeds along the reaction coordinate over the transition state is extended to molecular dynamics trajectories that in general do not cross the dividing surface between the initial and the final local minima at the exact transition state. Our molecular dynamics Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle states that low energy molecular dynamics trajectories are more likely to lead into the basin of attraction of a low energy local minimum than high energy trajectories. In the context of global optimization schemes based on molecular dynamics our molecular dynamics Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle implies that using low energy trajectories one needs to visit a smaller number of distinguishable local minima before finding the global minimum than when using high energy trajectories.

Efficient and accurate three dimensional Poisson solver for surface problems

We present a method that gives highly accurate electrostatic potentials for systems where we have periodic boundary conditions in two spatial directions but free boundary conditions in the third direction. These boundary conditions are needed for all kind of surface problems. Our method has an O(N log N) computational cost, where N is the number of grid points, with a very small prefactor. This Poisson solver is primarily intended for real space methods where the charge density and the potential are given on a uniform grid.

Particle-Particle, Particle-Scaling function (P3S) algorithm for electrostatic problems in free boundary conditions

An algorithm for fast calculation of the Coulombic forces and energies of point particles with free boundary conditions is proposed. Its calculation time scales as N log N for N particles. This novel method has lower crossover point with the full O(N^2) direct summation than the Fast Multipole Method. The forces obtained by our algorithm are analytical derivatives of the energy which guarantees energy conservation during a molecular dynamics simulation. Our algorithm is very simple. An MPI parallelised version of the code can be downloaded under the GNU General Public License from the website of our group.

Efficient solution of Poisson's equation with free boundary conditions

Interpolating scaling functions give a faithful representation of a localized charge distribution by its values on a grid. For such charge distributions, using a Fast Fourier method, we obtain highly accurate electrostatic potentials for free boundary conditions at the cost of O(N log N) operations, where N is the number of grid points. Thus, with our approach, free boundary conditions are treated as efficiently as the periodic conditions via plane wave methods.
