On Thurston's geometrical space form problem: on quasi space forms

A proposal is made for what may well be the most elementary Riemannian spaces which are homogeneous but not isotropic. In other words: a proposal is made for what may well be the nicest symmetric spaces beyond the real space forms, that is, beyond the Riemannian spaces which are homogeneous and isotropic. The above qualification of `'nicest symmetric spaces'' finds a justification in that, together with the real space forms, these spaces are most natural with respect to the importance in human vision of our ability to readily recognise conformal things and in that these spaces are most natural with respect to what in Weyl's view is symmetry in Riemannian geometry. Following his suggestion to remove the real space forms' isotropy condition, the quasi space forms thus introduced do offer a metrical, local geometrical solution to the geometrical space form problem as posed by Thurston in his 1979 Princeton Lecture Notes on `'The Geometry and Topology of 3-manifolds''. Roughly speaking, quasi space forms are the Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater than or equal to 3, which are not real space forms but which admit two orthogonally complementary distributions such that at all points all the 2-planes that in the tangent spaces there are situated in a same position relative to these distributions do have the same sectional curvatures.

Natural Intrinsic Geometrical Symmetries

A proposal is made for what could well be the most natural symmetrical Riemannian spaces which are homogeneous but not isotropic, i.e. of what could well be the most natural class of symmetrical spaces beyond the spaces of constant Riemannian curvature, that is, beyond the spaces which are homogeneous and isotropic, or, still, the spaces which satisfy the axiom of free mobility.

The Mean Curvature of the Second Fundamental Form of a hypersurface

An expression for the first variation of the area functional of the second fundamental form is given for a hypersurface in a semi-Riemannian space. The concept of the "mean curvature of the second fundamental form" is then introduced. Some characterisations of extrinsic hyperspheres in terms of this curvature are given.

Marginally trapped surfaces in Minkowski 4-space invariant under a rotation subgroup of the Lorentz group

A local classification of spacelike surfaces in Minkowski 4-space, which are invariant under spacelike rotations, and with mean curvature vector either vanishing or lightlike, is obtained. Furthermore, the existence of such surfaces with prescribed Gaussian curvature is shown. A procedure is presented to glue several of these surfaces with intermediate parts where the mean curvature vector field vanishes. In particular, a local description of marginally trapped surfaces invariant under spacelike rotations is exhibited.

Boost invariant marginally trapped surfaces in Minkowski 4-space

The extremal and partly marginally trapped surfaces in Minkowski 4-space, which are invariant under the group of boost isometries, are classified. Moreover, it is shown that there do not exist extremal surfaces of this kind with constant Gaussian curvature. A procedure is given in order to construct a partly marginally trapped surface by gluing two marginally trapped surfaces which are invariant under the group of boost isometries. As an application, a proper star-surface is constructed.

A new method to construct spacetimes with a spacelike circle action

A new general procedure to construct realistic spacetimes is introduced. It is based on the null congruence on a time-oriented Lorentzian manifold associated to a certain timelike vector field. As an application, new examples of stably causal Petrov type D spacetimes which obey the timelike convergence condition and which admit an isometric spacelike circle action are obtained.

Ideally embedded space-times

Due to the growing interest in embeddings of space-time in higher-dimensional spaces we consider a specific type of embedding. After proving an inequality between intrinsically defined curvature invariants and the squared mean curvature, we extend the notion of ideal embeddings from Riemannian geometry to the indefinite case. Ideal embeddings are such that the embedded manifold receives the least amount of tension from the surrounding space. Then it is shown that the de Sitter spaces, a Robertson-Walker space-time and some anisotropic perfect fluid metrics can be ideally embedded in a five-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space.
