Lorentz invariant ensembles of vector backgrounds

We consider gauge field theories in the presence of ensembles of vector backgrounds. While Lorentz invariance is explicitely broken in the presence of any single background, here, the Lorentz invariance of the theory is restored by averaging over a Lorentz invariant ensemble of backgrounds, i.e. a set of background vectors that is mapped onto itself under Lorentz transformations. This framewkork is used to study the effects of a non-trivial but Lorentz invariant vacuum structure or mass dimension two vector condensates by identifying the background with a shift of the gauge field. Up to now, the ensembles used in the literature comprise configurations corresponding to non-zero field tensors together with such with vanishing field strength. We find that even when constraining the ensembles to pure gauge configurations, the usual high-energy degrees of freedom are removed from the spectrum of asymptotic states in the presence of said backgrounds in euclidean and in Minkowski space. We establish this result not only for the propagators to all orders in the background and otherwise at tree level but for the full propagator.

The power spectrum of SUSY-CDM on sub-galactic scales

The formation of large scale structure is independent of the nature of the cold dark matter (CDM), however the fate of very small scale inhomogeneities depends on the micro-physics of the CDM particles. We investigate the matter power spectrum for scales that enter the Hubble radius well before matter-radiation equality, and follow its evolution until the time when the first inhomogeneities become non-linear. Our focus lies on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), and as a concrete example we analyze the case when the lightest supersymmetric particle is a bino. We show that collisional damping and free-streaming of WIMPs lead to a matter power spectrum with a sharp cut-off at about 10^(-6) M_odot and a maximum close to that cut-off. We also calculate the transfer function for the growth of the inhomogeneities in the linear regime. These three effects (collisional damping, free-streaming and gravitational growth) are combined to provide a WMAP normalized primordial CDM power spectrum, which could serve as an input for high resolution CDM simulations. The smallest inhomogeneities typically enter the non-linear regime at a redshift of about 60.

The Casimir Effect in the Presence of Compactified Universal Extra Dimensions

The Casimir force in a system consisting of two parallel conducting plates in the presence of compactified universal extra dimensions (UXD) is analyzed. The Casimir force with UXDs differs from the force obtained without extra dimensions. A new power law for the Casimir force is derived. By comparison to experimental data the size R of the universal extra dimensions can be restricted to R < 10 nm for one extra dimension.

Black Hole Relics in Large Extra Dimensions

Recent calculations applying statistical mechanics indicate that in a setting with compactified large extra dimensions a black hole might evolve into a (quasi-)stable state with mass close to the new fundamental scale $M_f$. Black holes and therefore their relics might be produced at the LHC in the case of extra-dimensional topologies. In this energy regime, Hawking's evaporation scenario is modified due to energy conservation and quantum effects. We reanalyse the evaporation of small black holes including the quantisation of the emitted radiation due to the finite surface of the black hole. It is found that observable stable black hole relics with masses $\sim 1-3 M_f$ would form which could be identified by a delayed single jet with a corresponding hard momentum kick to the relic and by ionisation, e.g. in a TPC.

Quasi Stable Black Holes at the Large Hadron Collider

We adress the production of black holes at LHC and their time evolution in space times with compactified space like extra dimensions. It is shown that black holes with life times of hundred fm/c can be produced at LHC. The possibility of quasi-stable remnants is discussed.

Discrete energy spectrum of Hawking radiation from Schwarzschild surfaces

We analyze the allowed energy levels of Hawking radiation from Schwarzschild surfaces in space-times with large extra dimensions. From the requirement that the wave functions associated with these particles be single-valued and obey radial boundary conditions, we derive an upper bound of their discrete energy spectrum as a function of the number of large extra dimensions and the mass of the black hole. Furthermore, we investigate the spacing of the energy levels.

Damping of inhomogeneities in neutralino dark matter

The lightest supersymmetric particle, most likely the neutralino, might account for a large fraction of dark matter in the Universe. We show that the primordial spectrum of density fluctuations in neutralino cold dark matter (CDM) has a sharp cut-off due to two damping mechanisms: collisional damping during the kinetic decoupling of the neutralinos at O(10 MeV) and free streaming after last scattering of neutralinos. The cut-off in the primordial spectrum defines a minimal mass for CDM objects in hierarchical structure formation. For typical neutralino and sfermion masses the first gravitationally bound neutralino clouds have masses above 10^(-6) M_\odot.

Damping scales of neutralino cold dark matter

The lightest supersymmetric particle, most likely the neutralino, might account for a large fraction of dark matter in the Universe. We show that the primordial spectrum of density fluctuations in neutralino cold dark matter (CDM) has a sharp cut-off due to two damping mechanisms: collisional damping during the kinetic decoupling of the neutralinos at about 30 MeV (for typical neutralino and sfermion masses) and free streaming after last scattering of neutralinos. The last scattering temperature is lower than the kinetic decoupling temperature by one order of magnitude. The cut-off in the primordial spectrum defines a minimal mass for CDM objects in hierarchical structure formation. For typical neutralino and sfermion masses the first gravitationally bound neutralino clouds have to have masses above 10^(-7) solar masses.

Small-scale structure of cold dark matter

We investigate the clumping of cold dark matter (CDM) at small scales. If the CDM particle is the neutralino, we find that collisional damping during its kinetic decoupling from the radiation fluid and free streaming introduce a small-scale cut-off in the primordial power spectrum of CDM. This cut-off sets the scale for the very first CDM objects in the Universe, which we expect to have a mass of $\sim 10^{-12} M_\odot$. For non-thermal CDM candidates, such as axions, wimpzillas, or primordial black holes, the cosmological QCD transition might induce features in the primordial spectrum at similar mass scales.
