An $N$-independent tensor decomposition for SU($N$)

To facilitate a simultaneous treatment of an arbitrary number of colors in representation theory-based descriptions of QCD color structure, we derive an $N$-independent reduction of SU($N$) tensor products. To this end, we label each irreducible representation by a pair of Young diagrams, with parts acting on quarks and antiquarks. By combining this with a column-wise multiplication of Young diagrams, we generalize the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of two Young diagrams to the product of two Young diagram pairs, achieving a general-$N$ decomposition.

Wigner 6j symbols with gluon lines: completing the set of 6j symbols required for color decomposition

We construct a set of Wigner 6j symbols with gluon lines (adjoint representations) in closed form, expressed in terms of similar 6j symbols with quark lines (fundamental representations). Together with Wigner 6j symbols with quark lines, this gives a set of 6j symbols sufficient for treating QCD color structure for any number of external particles, in or beyond perturbation theory. This facilitates a complete treatment of QCD color structure in terms of orthogonal multiplet bases, without the need of ever explicitly constructing the corresponding bases. We thereby open up for a completely representation theory based treatment of SU(N) color structure, with the potential of significantly speeding up the color structure treatment.

Wigner 6j symbols for SU(N): Symbols with at least two quark-lines

We study a class of SU(N) Wigner 6j symbols involving two fundamental representations, and derive explicit formulae for all 6j symbols in this class. Our formulae express the 6j symbols in terms of the dimensions of the involved representations, and they are thereby functions of N. We view these explicit formulae as a first step towards efficiently decomposing SU(N) color structures in terms of group invariants.

Birdtracks for SU(N)

I gently introduce the diagrammatic birdtrack notation, first for vector algebra and then for permutations. After moving on to general tensors I review some recent results on Hermitian Young operators, gluon projectors, and multiplet bases for SU(N) color space.

A Gutzwiller trace formula for large hermitian matrices

We develop a semiclassical approximation for the dynamics of quantum systems in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces whose classical counterparts are defined on a toroidal phase space. In contrast to previous models of quantum maps, the time evolution is in continuous time and, hence, is generated by a Schrödinger equation. In the framework of Weyl quantisation, we construct discrete, semiclassical Fourier integral operators approximating the unitary time evolution and use these to prove a Gutzwiller trace formula. We briefly discuss a semiclassical quantisation condition for eigenvalues as well as some simple examples.

The Berry-Keating operator on a lattice

We construct and study a version of the Berry-Keating operator with a built-in truncation of the phase space, which we choose to be a two-dimensional torus. The operator is a Weyl quantisation of the classical Hamiltonian for an inverted harmonic oscillator, producing a difference operator on a finite, periodic lattice. We investigate the continuum and the infinite-volume limit of our model in conjunction with the semiclassical limit. Using semiclassical methods, we show that a specific combination of the limits leads to a logarithmic mean spectral density as it was anticipated by Berry and Keating.

Particle creation and annihilation at interior boundaries: One-dimensional models

We describe creation and annihilation of particles at external sources in one spatial dimension in terms of interior-boundary conditions (IBCs). We derive explicit solutions for spectra, (generalised) eigenfunctions, as well as Green functions, spectral determinants, and integrated spectral densities. Moreover, we introduce a quantum graph version of IBC-Hamiltonians.

Hermitian Young Operators

Starting from conventional Young operators we construct Hermitian operators which project orthogonally onto irreducible representations of the (special) unitary group.

Tools for calculations in color space

Both the higher energy and the initial state colored partons contribute to making exact calculations in QCD color space more important at the LHC than at its predecessors. This is applicable whether the method of assessing QCD is fixed order calculation, resummation, or parton showers. In this talk we discuss tools for tackling the problem of performing exact color summed calculations. We start with theoretical tools in the form of the (standard) trace bases and the orthogonal multiplet bases (for which a general method of construction was recently presented). Following this, we focus on two new packages for performing color structure calculations: one easy to use Mathematica package, ColorMath, and one C++ package, ColorFull, which is suitable for more demanding calculations, and for interfacing with event generators.

Orthogonal multiplet bases in SU(Nc) color space

We develop a general recipe for constructing orthogonal bases for the calculation of color structures appearing in QCD for any number of partons and arbitrary Nc. The bases are constructed using hermitian gluon projectors onto irreducible subspaces invariant under SU(Nc). Thus, each basis vector is associated with an irreducible representation of SU(Nc). The resulting multiplet bases are not only orthogonal, but also minimal for finite Nc. As a consequence, for calculations involving many colored particles, the number of basis vectors is reduced significantly compared to standard approaches employing overcomplete bases. We exemplify the method by constructing multiplet bases for all processes involving a total of 6 external colored partons.

Polyakov loops and spectral properties of the staggered Dirac operator

We study the spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator in SU(2) gauge fields close to the free limit, for both the fundamental and the adjoint representation. Numerically we find a characteristic cluster structure with spacings of adjacent levels separating into three scales. We derive an analytical formula which explains the emergence of these different spectral scales. The behavior on the two coarser scales is determined by the lattice geometry and the Polyakov loops, respectively. Furthermore, we analyze the spectral statistics on all three scales, comparing to predictions from random matrix theory.

Polyakov loops and SU(2) staggered Dirac spectra

We consider the spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator with SU(2) gauge fields. Our study is motivated by the fact that the antiunitary symmetries of this operator are different from those of the SU(2) continuum Dirac operator. In this contribution, we investigate in some detail staggered eigenvalue spectra close to the free limit. Numerical experiments in the quenched approximation and at very large $β$-values show that the eigenvalues occur in clusters consisting of eight eigenvalues each. We can predict the locations of these clusters for a given configuration very accurately by an analytical formula involving Polyakov loops and boundary conditions. The spacing distribution of the eigenvalues within the clusters agrees with the chiral symplectic ensemble of random matrix theory, in agreement with theoretical expectations, whereas the spacing distribution between the clusters tends towards Poisson behavior.

Semiclassical limits for the QCD Dirac operator

We identify three semiclassical parameters in the QCD Dirac operator. Mutual coupling of the different types of degrees of freedom (translational, colour and spin) depends on how the semiclassical limit is taken. We discuss various semiclassical limits and their potential to describe spectrum and spectral statistics of the QCD Dirac operator close to zero virtuality.

Semiclassical quantisation rules for the Dirac and Pauli equations

We derive explicit semiclassical quantisation conditions for the Dirac and Pauli equations. We show that the spin degree of freedom yields a contribution which is of the same order of magnitude as the Maslov correction in Einstein-Brillouin-Keller quantisation. In order to obtain this result a generalisation of the notion of integrability for a certain skew product flow of classical translational dynamics and classical spin precession has to be derived. Among the examples discussed is the relativistic Kepler problem with Thomas precession, whose treatment sheds some light on the amazing success of Sommerfeld's theory of fine structure [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 51 (1916) 1--91].

Torus quantization for spinning particles

We derive semiclassical quantization conditions for systems with spin. To this end one has to define the notion of integrability for the corresponding classical system which is given by a combination of the translational motion and classical spin precession. We determine the geometry of the invariant manifolds of this product dynamics which support semiclassical solutions of the wave equation. The semiclassical quantization conditions contain a new term, which is of the same order as the Maslov correction. This term is identified as a rotation angle for a classical spin vector. Applied to the relativistic Kepler problem the procedure sheds some light on the amazing success of Sommerfeld's theory of fine structure [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 51 (1916) 1-94].

Parabolic maps with spin: Generic spectral statistics with non-mixing classical limit

We investigate quantised maps of the torus whose classical analogues are ergodic but not mixing. Their quantum spectral statistics shows non-generic behaviour, i.e.it does not follow random matrix theory (RMT). By coupling the map to a spin 1/2, which corresponds to changing the quantisation without altering the classical limit of the dynamics on the torus, we numerically observe a transition to RMT statistics. The results are interpreted in terms of semiclassical trace formulae for the maps with and without spin respectively. We thus have constructed quantum systems with non-mixing classical limit which show generic (i.e. RMT) spectral statistics. We also discuss the analogous situation for an almost integrable map, where we compare to Semi-Poissonian statistics.
