Excited-state effects in nucleon structure on the lattice using hybrid interpolators

It would be very useful to find a way of reducing excited-state effects in lattice QCD calculations of nucleon structure that has a low computational cost. We explore the use of hybrid interpolators, which contain a nontrivial gluonic excitation, in a variational basis together with the standard interpolator with tuned smearing width. Using the clover discretization of the field strength tensor, a calculation using a fixed linear combination of standard and hybrid interpolators can be done using the same number of quark propagators as a standard calculation, making this a cost-effective option. We find that such an interpolator, optimized by solving a generalized eigenvalue problem, reduces excited-state contributions in two-point correlators. However, the effect in three-point correlators, which are needed for computing nucleon matrix elements, is mixed: for some matrix elements such as the tensor charge, excited-state effects are suppressed, whereas for others such as the axial charge, they are enhanced. The results illustrate that the variational method is not guaranteed to reduce the net contribution from excited states except in its asymptotic regime, and suggest that it may be important to use a large basis of interpolators capable of isolating all of the relevant low-lying states.

Nucleon axial, scalar, and tensor charges using lattice QCD at the physical pion mass

We report on lattice QCD calculations of the nucleon isovector axial, scalar, and tensor charges. Our calculations are performed on two 2+1-flavor ensembles generated using a 2-HEX-smeared Wilson-clover action at the physical pion mass and lattice spacings $a\approx$ 0.116 and 0.093 fm. We use a wide range of source-sink separations - eight values ranging from roughly 0.4 to 1.4 fm on the coarse ensemble and three values from 0.9 to 1.5 fm on the fine ensemble - which allows us to perform an extensive study of excited-state effects using different analysis and fit strategies. To determine the renormalization factors, we use the nonperturbative Rome-Southampton approach and compare RI'-MOM and RI-SMOM intermediate schemes to estimate the systematic uncertainties. Our final results are computed in the MS-bar scheme at scale 2 GeV. The tensor and axial charges have uncertainties of roughly 4%, $g_T=0.972(41)$ and $g_A=1.265(49)$. The resulting scalar charge, $g_S=0.927(303)$, has a much larger uncertainty due to a stronger dependence on the choice of intermediate renormalization scheme and on the lattice spacing.

Accelerating Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model on the hexagonal lattice

We present different methods to increase the performance of Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model in two-dimensions. Our simulations concentrate on a hexagonal lattice, though can be easily generalized to other lattices. It is found that best results can be achieved using a flexible GMRES solver for matrix inversions and the second order Omelyan integrator with Hasenbusch acceleration on different time scales for molecular dynamics. We demonstrate how an arbitrary number of Hasenbusch mass terms can be included into this geometry and find that the optimal speed depends weakly on the choice of the number of Hasenbusch masses and their values. As such, the tuning of these masses is amenable to automization and we present an algorithm for this tuning that is based on the knowledge of the dependence of solver time and forces on the Hasenbusch masses. We benchmark our algorithms to systems where direct numerical diagonalization is feasible and find excellent agreement. We also simulate systems with hexagonal lattice dimensions up to $102\times 102$ and $N_t=64$. We find that the Hasenbusch algorithm leads to a speed up of more than an order of magnitude.

Towards the P-wave nucleon-pion scattering amplitude in the $Δ(1232)$ channel

We use lattice QCD and the Lüscher method to study elastic pion-nucleon scattering in the isospin $I = 3/2$ channel, which couples to the $Δ(1232)$ resonance. Our $N_f=2+1$ flavor lattice setup features a pion mass of $m_π\approx 250$ MeV, such that the strong decay channel $Δ\rightarrow πN$ is close to the threshold. We present our method for constructing the required lattice correlation functions from single- and two-hadron interpolating fields and their projection to irreducible representations of the relevant symmetry group of the lattice. We show preliminary results for the energy spectra in selected moving frames and irreducible representations, and extract the scattering phase shifts. Using a Breit-Wigner fit, we also determine the resonance mass $m_Δ$ and the $g_{Δ-πN}$ coupling.

Computing the nucleon charge and axial radii directly at $Q^2=0$ in lattice QCD

We describe a procedure for extracting momentum derivatives of nucleon matrix elements on the lattice directly at $Q^2=0$. This is based on the Rome method for computing momentum derivatives of quark propagators. We apply this procedure to extract the nucleon isovector magnetic moment and charge radius as well as the isovector induced pseudoscalar form factor at $Q^2=0$ and the axial radius. For comparison, we also determine these quantities with the traditional approach of computing the corresponding form factors, i.e. $G^v_E(Q^2)$ and $G_M^v(Q^2)$ for the case of the vector current and $G_P^v(Q^2)$ and $G_A^v(Q^2)$ for the axial current, at multiple $Q^2$ values followed by $z$-expansion fits. We perform our calculations at the physical pion mass using a 2HEX-smeared Wilson-clover action. To control the effects of excited-state contamination, the calculations were done at three source-sink separations and the summation method was used. The derivative method produces results consistent with those from the traditional approach but with larger statistical uncertainties especially for the isovector charge and axial radii.

Extracting the Single-Particle Gap in Carbon Nanotubes with Lattice Quantum Monte Carlo

We show how lattice Quantum Monte Carlo simulations can be used to calculate electronic properties of carbon nanotubes in the presence of strong electron-electron correlations. We employ the path integral formalism and use methods developed within the lattice QCD community for our numerical work and compare our results to empirical data of the Anti-Ferromagnetic Mott Insulating gap in large diameter tubes.

Up, down, and strange nucleon axial form factors from lattice QCD

We report a calculation of the nucleon axial form factors $G_A^q(Q^2)$ and $G_P^q(Q^2)$ for all three light quark flavors $q\in\{u,d,s\}$ in the range $0\leq Q^2\lesssim 1.2\text{ GeV}^2$ using lattice QCD. This work was done using a single ensemble with pion mass 317 MeV and made use of the hierarchical probing technique to efficiently evaluate the required disconnected loops. We perform nonperturbative renormalization of the axial current, including a nonperturbative treatment of the mixing between light and strange currents due to the singlet-nonsinglet difference caused by the axial anomaly. The form factor shapes are fit using the model-independent $z$ expansion. From $G_A^q(Q^2)$, we determine the quark contributions to the nucleon spin and axial radii. By extrapolating the isovector $G_P^{u-d}(Q^2)$, we obtain the induced pseudoscalar coupling relevant for ordinary muon capture and the pion-nucleon coupling constant. We find that the disconnected contributions to $G_P$ form factors are large, and give an interpretation based on the dominant influence of the pseudoscalar poles in these form factors.

Leptonic decay-constant ratio $f_K/f_π$ from lattice QCD using 2+1 clover-improved fermion flavors with 2-HEX smearing

We present a calculation of the leptonic decay-constant ratio $f_K/f_π$ in 2+1 flavor QCD. Our data set includes five lattice spacings and pion masses reaching down below the physical one. Special emphasis is placed on a careful study of all systematic uncertainties, especially the continuum extrapolation. Our result is perfectly compatible with the first-row unitarity constraint of the Standard Model.

Computing the nucleon Dirac radius directly at $Q^2=0$

We describe a lattice approach for directly computing momentum derivatives of nucleon matrix elements using the Rome method, which we apply to obtain the isovector magnetic moment and Dirac radius. We present preliminary results calculated at the physical pion mass using a 2HEX-smeared Wilson-clover action. For removing the effects of excited-state contamination, the calculations were done at three source-sink separations and the summation method was used.

QCD thermodynamics with continuum extrapolated Wilson fermions II

We continue our investigation of 2+1 flavor QCD thermodynamics using dynamical Wilson fermions in the fixed scale approach. Two additional pion masses, approximately 440 MeV and 285 MeV, are added to our previous work at 545 MeV. The simulations were performed at 3 or 4 lattice spacings at each pion mass. The renormalized chiral condensate, strange quark number susceptibility and Polyakov loop is obtained as a function of the temperature and we observe a decrease in the light chiral pseudo-critical temperature as the pion mass is lowered while the pseudo-critical temperature associated with the strange quark number susceptibility or the Polyakov loop is only mildly sensitive to the pion mass. These findings are in agreement with previous continuum results obtained in the staggered formulation.

High-precision calculation of the strange nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We report a direct lattice QCD calculation of the strange nucleon electromagnetic form factors $G_E^s$ and $G_M^s$ in the kinematic range $0 \leq Q^2 \lesssim 1.2\: {\rm GeV}^2$. For the first time, both $G_E^s$ and $G_M^s$ are shown to be nonzero with high significance. This work uses closer-to-physical lattice parameters than previous calculations, and achieves an unprecedented statistical precision by implementing a recently proposed variance reduction technique called hierarchical probing. We perform model-independent fits of the form factor shapes using the $z$-expansion and determine the strange electric and magnetic radii and magnetic moment. We compare our results to parity-violating electron-proton scattering data and to other theoretical studies.

Recent results on the Equation of State of QCD

We report on a continuum extrapolated result (arXiv:1309.5258) for the equation of state (EoS) of QCD with $N_f=2+1$ dynamical quark flavors and discuss preliminary results obtained with an additional dynamical charm quark ($N_f=2+1+1$). For all our final results, the systematics are controlled, quark masses are set to their physical values, and the continuum limit is taken using at least three lattice spacings corresponding to temporal extents up to $N_t=16$.

Spectral functions of charmonium with 2+1 flavours of dynamical quarks

Finite temperature charmonium spectral functions in the pseudoscalar(PS) and vector(V) channels are studied in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks, on fine isotropic lattices (with a lattice spacing of 0.057fm), with a non-physical pion mass of 545MeV. The highest temperature studied is approximately 1.4Tc. Up to this temperature no significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the PS channel. The V channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy quark transport, plus a temperature independent term at omega > 0. These results are in accord with previous calculations using the quenched approximation.

The highest temperature studied is approximately $1.4 T_c$. Up to this temperature no significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the pseudoscalar channel. The vector channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy quark transport, plus a temperature independent term at ω>0. These results are in accord with previous calculations using the quenched approximation.

Adaptive Aggregation Based Domain Decomposition Multigrid for the Lattice Wilson Dirac Operator

In lattice QCD computations a substantial amount of work is spent in solving discretized versions of the Dirac equation. Conventional Krylov solvers show critical slowing down for large system sizes and physically interesting parameter regions. We present a domain decomposition adaptive algebraic multigrid method used as a precondtioner to solve the "clover improved" Wilson discretization of the Dirac equation. This approach combines and improves two approaches, namely domain decomposition and adaptive algebraic multigrid, that have been used seperately in lattice QCD before. We show in extensive numerical test conducted with a parallel production code implementation that considerable speed-up over conventional Krylov subspace methods, domain decomposition methods and other hierarchical approaches for realistic system sizes can be achieved.

Full result for the QCD equation of state with 2+1 flavors

We present a full result for the 2+1 flavor QCD equation of state. All the systematics are controlled, the quark masses are set to their physical values, and the continuum extrapolation is carried out. This extends our previous studies [JHEP 0601:089 (2006); 1011:077 (2010)] to even finer lattices and now includes ensembles with Nt = 6,8,10,12 up to Nt = 16. We use a Symanzik improved gauge and a stout-link improved staggered fermion action. Our findings confirm our earlier results. In order to facilitate the direct use of our equation of state we make our tabulated results available for download.
