The time-dependent exchange-correlation functional for a Hubbard dimer: quantifying non-adiabatic effect

We address and quantify the role of non-adiabaticity ("memory effects") in the exchange-correlation (xc) functional of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) for describing non-linear dynamics of many-body systems. Time-dependent resonant processes are particularly challenging for available TDDFT approximations, due to their strong non-linear and non-adiabatic character. None of the known approximate density functionals are able to cope with this class of problems in a satisfactory manner. In this work we look at the prototypical example of the resonant processes by considering Rabi oscillations within the exactly soluble 2-site Hubbard model. We construct the exact adiabatic xc functional and show that (i) it does not reproduce correctly resonant Rabi dynamics, (ii) there is a sizable non-adiabatic contribution to the exact xc potential, which turns out to be small only at the beginning and at the end of the Rabi cycle when the ground state population is dominant. We then propose a "two-level" approximation for the time-dependent xc potential which can capture Rabi dynamics in the 2-site problem. It works well both for resonant and for detuned Rabi oscillations and becomes essentially exact in the linear response regime. This new, fully non-adiabatic and explicit density functional constitutes one of the main results of the present work.

Anomalous insulator metal transition in boron nitride-graphene hybrid atomic layers

The study of two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems is of great fundamental significance in physics. Atomic layers containing hybridized domains of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BNC) constitute a new kind of disordered 2D electronic system. Magneto-electric transport measurements performed at low temperature in vapor phase synthesized h-BNC atomic layers show a clear and anomalous transition from an insulating to a metallic behavior upon cooling. The observed insulator to metal transition can be modulated by electron and hole doping and by the application of an external magnetic field. These results supported by ab-initio calculations suggest that this transition in h-BNC has distinctly different characteristics when compared to other 2D electron systems and is the result of the coexistence between two distinct mechanisms, namely, percolation through metallic graphene networks and hopping conduction between edge states on randomly distributed insulating h-BN domains.

Time dependent transport phenomena

The aim of this review is to give a pedagogical introduction to our recently proposed ab initio theory of quantum transport.

The renormalised quark mass in the Schrodinger functional of lattice QCD - a one-loop calculation with a non-vanishing background field

The critical quark mass, at which the renormalised mass vanishes, is computed in the Schrodinger functional scheme with a non vanishing background field at one-loop order of perturbation theory. Further one-loop calculations are done for the renormalisation constant of the pseudo scalar density and for several discretisation errors and compared to results obtained with a vanishing background field.

Schrödinger functional at N_f=-2

We study the Schrödinger functional coupling for lattice Yang-Mills theory coupled to an improved bosonic spinor field, which corresponds to QCD with minus two light flavors. This theory serves as a less costly testcase than QCD for the scaling of the coupling.

Schr"odinger functional at negative flavour number

The scaling of the Schr"odinger functional coupling is studied numerically and perturbatively for an SU(3) lattice gauge field coupled to an O(a) improved bosonic spinor field. This corresponds to QCD with minus two light flavours and is used as a numerically less costly test case for real QCD. A suitable algorithm is developed, and the influence of the matter fields on the continuum limit and the lattice artefacts are studied in detail.

First results on the running coupling in QCD with two massless flavours

We report on the non-perturbative computation of the running coupling of two-flavour QCD in the Schr"odinger functional scheme. The corresponding Lambda-parameter, which describes the coupling strength at high energy, is related to a low energy scale which still remains to be connected to a hadronic ``experimentally'' observable quantity. We find the non-perturbative evolution of the coupling indispensable to avoid untolerable errors in the estimated Lambda-parameter.
