The time-dependent von Kármán plate equation as a limit of 3d nonlinear elasticity

The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of three-dimensional nonlinear elastodynamics in a thin plate is studied, as the thickness $h$ of the plate tends to zero. Under appropriate scalings of the applied force and of the initial values in terms of $h$, it is shown that three-dimensional solutions of the nonlinear elastodynamic equation converge to solutions of the time-dependent von Kármán plate equation.

The div-curl lemma for sequences whose divergence and curl are compact in W^{-1,1}

It is shown that $u_k \cdot v_k$ converges weakly to $u\cdot v$ if $u_k\weakto u$ weakly in $L^p$ and $v_k\weakly v$ weakly in $L^q$ with $p, q\in (1,\infty)$, $1/p+1/q=1$, under the additional assumptions that the sequences $\Div u_k$ and $\curl v_k$ are compact in the dual space of $W^{1,\infty}_0$ and that $u_k\cdot v_k$ is equi-integrable. The main point is that we only require equi-integrability of the scalar product $u_k\cdot v_k$ and not of the individual sequences.

Strict convexity of the free energy for non-convex gradient models at moderate $β$

We consider a gradient interface model on the lattice with interaction potential which is a non-convex perturbation of a convex potential. We show using a one-step multiple scale analysis the strict convexity of the surface tension at high temperature. This is an extension of Funaki and Spohn's result, where the strict convexity of potential was crucial in their proof that for every tilt there is a unique, shift invariant, ergodic Gibbs measure for the $\nablaϕ$ field.

The Group of Hamiltonian Homeomorphisms in the L^\infty-norm

The group Hameo (M,ω) of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of a connected symplectic manifold (M,ω) was defined and studied in [7] and further in [6]. In these papers, the authors consistently used the L^{(1,\infty)}-Hofer norm (and not the L^\infty-Hofer norm) on the space of Hamiltonian paths (see below for the definitions). A justification for this choice was given in [7]. In this article we study the L^\infty-case. In view of the fact that the Hofer norm on the group Ham (M,ω) of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms does not depend on the choice of the L^{(1,\infty)}-norm vs. the L^\infty-norm [9], Y.-G. Oh and D. McDuff (private communications) asked whether the two notions of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms arising from the different norms coincide. We will give an affirmative answer to this question in this paper.

Convergence of equilibria of three-dimensional thin elastic beams

A convergence result is proved for the equilibrium configurations of a three-dimensional thin elastic beam, as the diameter h of the cross-section goes to zero. More precisely, we show that stationary points of the nonlinear elastic functional E^h, whose energies (per unit cross-section) are bounded by Ch^2, converge to stationary points of the Gamma-limit of E^h/h^2. This corresponds to a nonlinear one-dimensional model for inextensible rods, describing bending and torsion effects. The proof is based on the rigidity estimate for low-energy deformations by Friesecke, James, and Müller and on a compensated compactness argument in a singular geometry. In addition, possible concentration effects of the strain are controlled by a careful truncation argument.

The group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms and $C^0$ symplectic topology

The main purpose of this paper is to carry out some of the foundational study of $C^0$-Hamiltonian geometry and $C^0$-symplectic topology. We introduce the notions of the strong and the weak {\it Hamiltonian topology} on the space of Hamiltonian paths, and on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. We then define the {\it group} $Hameo(M,ω)$ and the space $Hameo^w(M,ω)$ of {\it Hamiltonian homeomorphisms} such that $$ Ham(M,ω) \subsetneq Hameo(M,ω) \subset Hameo^w(M,ω) \subset Sympeo(M,ω) $$ where $Sympeo(M,ω)$ is the group of symplectic homeomorphisms. We prove that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is a {\it normal subgroup} of $Sympeo(M,ω)$ and contains all the time-one maps of Hamiltonian vector fields of $C^{1,1}$-functions. We prove that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is path connected and so contained in the identity component $Sympeo_0(M,ω)$ of $Sympeo(M,ω)$. In the case of an orientable surface, we prove that the {\it mass flow} of any element from $Hameo(M,ω)$ vanishes, which in turn implies that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is strictly smaller than the identity component of the group of area preserving homeomorphisms when $M \neq S^2$. For the case of $S^2$, we conjecture that $Hameo(S^2,ω)$ is still a proper subgroup of $Homeo^ω_0(S^2) = Sympeo_0(S^2,ω)$.

Yet Another Paper about Partial Verb Phrase Fronting in German

I describe a very simple HPSG analysis for partial verb phrase fronting. I will argue that the presented account is more adequate than others made during the past years because it allows the description of constituents in fronted positions with their modifier remaining in the non-fronted part of the sentence. A problem with ill-formed signs that are admitted by all HPSG accounts for partial verb phrase fronting known so far will be explained and a solution will be suggested that uses the difference between combinatoric relations of signs and their representation in word order domains.
