Topological invariants of groups and Koszul modules

We provide a uniform vanishing result for the graded components of the finite length Koszul module associated to a subspace K inside the second exterior product of a vector space, as well as a sharp upper bound for its Hilbert function. This purely algebraic statement has interesting applications to the study of a number of invariants associated to finitely generated groups, such as the Alexander invariants, the Chen ranks, or the degree of growth and nilpotency class. For instance, we explicitly bound the aforementioned invariants in terms of the first Betti number for the maximal metabelian quotients of (1) the Torelli group associated to the moduli space of curves; (2) nilpotent fundamental groups of compact Kaehler manifolds; (3) the Torelli group of a free group.

Koszul modules and Green's conjecture

We prove a strong vanishing result for finite length Koszul modules, and use it to derive Green's conjecture for every g-cuspidal rational curve over an algebraically closed field k with char(k) = 0 or char(k) >= (g+2)/2. As a consequence, we deduce that the general canonical curve of genus g satisfies Green's conjecture in this range. Our results are new in positive characteristic, whereas in characteristic zero they provide a different proof for theorems first obtained in two landmark papers by Voisin. Our strategy involves establishing two key results of independent interest: (1) we describe an explicit, characteristic-independent version of Hermite reciprocity for sl_2-representations; (2) we completely characterize, in arbitrary characteristics, the (non-)vanishing behavior of the syzygies of the tangential variety to a rational normal curve.

Naturality properties and comparison results for topological and infinitesimal embedded jump loci

We use augmented commutative differential graded algebra (ACDGA) models to study $G$-representation varieties of fundamental groups $π=π_1(M)$ and their embedded cohomology jump loci, around the trivial representation 1. When the space $M$ admits a finite family of maps, uniformly modeled by ACDGA morphisms, and certain finiteness and connectivity assumptions are satisfied, the germs at 1 of ${\rm Hom} (π,G)$ and of the embedded jump loci can be described in terms of their infinitesimal counterparts, naturally with respect to the given families. This approach leads to fairly explicit answers when $M$ is either a compact Kähler manifold, the complement of a central complex hyperplane arrangement, or the total space of a principal bundle with formal base space, provided the Lie algebra of the linear algebraic group $G$ is a non-abelian subalgebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$.

Infinitesimal finiteness obstructions

Does a space enjoying good finiteness properties admit an algebraic model with commensurable finiteness properties? In this note, we provide a rational homotopy obstruction for this to happen. As an application, we show that the maximal metabelian quotient of a very large, finitely generated group is not finitely presented. Using the theory of 1-minimal models, we also show that a finitely generated group $π$ admits a connected 1-model with finite-dimensional degree 1 piece if and only if the Malcev Lie algebra $\mathfrak{m}(π)$ is the lower central series completion of a finitely presented Lie algebra.

Rank two topological and infinitesimal embedded jump loci of quasi-projective manifolds

We study the germs at the origin of $G$-representation varieties and the degree 1 cohomology jump loci of fundamental groups of quasi-projective manifolds. Using the Morgan-Dupont model associated to a convenient compactification of such a manifold, we relate these germs to those of their infinitesimal counterparts, defined in terms of flat connections on those models. When the linear algebraic group $G$ is either $\textrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ or its standard Borel subgroup and the depth of the jump locus is 1, this dictionary works perfectly, allowing us to describe in this way explicit irreducible decompositions for the germs of these embedded jump loci. On the other hand, if either $G=\textrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ for some $n\ge 3$, or the depth is greater than 1, then certain natural inclusions of germs are strict.

Rank two jump loci for solvmanifolds and Lie algebras

We consider representation varieties in $SL_2$ for lattices in solvable Lie groups, and representation varieties in $sl_2$ for finite-dimensional Lie algebras. Inside them, we examine depth 1 characteristic varieties for solvmanifolds, respectively resonance varieties for cochain Differential Graded Algebras of Lie algebras. We prove a general result that leads, in both cases, to the complete description of the analytic germs at the origin, for the corresponding embedded rank 2 jump loci.

The topology of compact Lie group actions through the lens of finite models

Given a compact, connected Lie group $K$, we use principal $K$-bundles to construct manifolds with prescribed finite-dimensional algebraic models. Conversely, let $M$ be a compact, connected, smooth manifold which supports an almost free $K$-action. Under a partial formality assumption on the orbit space and a regularity assumption on the characteristic classes of the action, we describe an algebraic model for $M$ with commensurate finiteness and partial formality properties. The existence of such a model has various implications on the structure of the cohomology jump loci of $M$ and of the representation varieties of $π_1(M)$. As an application, we show that compact Sasakian manifolds of dimension $2n+1$ are $(n-1)$-formal, and that their fundamental groups are filtered-formal. Further applications to the study of weighted-homogeneous isolated surface singularities are also given.

Modular equalities for complex reflection arrangements

We compute the combinatorial Aomoto-Betti numbers $β_p(\mathcal{A})$ of a complex reflection arrangement. When $\mathcal{A}$ has rank at least $3$, we find that $β_p(\mathcal{A})\le 2$, for all primes $p$. Moreover, $β_p(\mathcal{A})=0$ if $p>3$, and $β_2(\mathcal{A})\ne 0$ if and only if $\mathcal{A}$ is the Hesse arrangement. We deduce that the multiplicity $e_d(\mathcal{A})$ of an order $d$ eigenvalue of the monodromy action on the first rational homology of the Milnor fiber is equal to the corresponding Aomoto-Betti number, when $d$ is prime. We give a uniform combinatorial characterization of the property $e_d(\mathcal{A})\ne 0$, for $2\le d\le 4$. We completely describe the monodromy action for full monomial arrangements of rank $3$ and $4$. We relate $e_d(\mathcal{A})$ and $β_p(\mathcal{A})$ to multinets, on an arbitrary arrangement.

On the geometry and topology of partial configuration spaces of Riemann surfaces

We examine complements (inside products of a smooth projective complex curve of arbitrary genus) of unions of diagonals indexed by the edges of an arbitrary simple graph. We use Gysin models associated to these quasi-projective manifolds to compute pairs of analytic germs at the origin, both for rank 1 and 2 representation varieties of their fundamental groups, and for degree 1 topological Green--Lazarsfeld loci. As a corollary, we describe all regular surjections with connected generic fiber, defined on the above complements onto smooth complex curves of negative Euler characteristic. We show that the nontrivial part at the origin, for both rank 2 representation varieties and their degree 1 jump loci, comes from curves of general type, via the above regular maps. We compute explicit finite presentations for the Malcev Lie algebras of the fundamental groups, and we analyze their formality properties.

The Milnor fibration of a hyperplane arrangement: from modular resonance to algebraic monodromy

A central question in arrangement theory is to determine whether the characteristic polynomial $Δ_q$ of the algebraic monodromy acting on the homology group $H_q(F(\mathcal{A}),\mathbb{C})$ of the Milnor fiber of a complex hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ is determined by the intersection lattice $L(\mathcal{A})$. Under simple combinatorial conditions, we show that the multiplicities of the factors of $Δ_1$ corresponding to certain eigenvalues of order a power of a prime $p$ are equal to the Aomoto--Betti numbers $β_p(\mathcal{A})$, which in turn are extracted from $L(\mathcal{A})$. When $\mathcal{A}$ defines an arrangement of projective lines with only double and triple points, this leads to a combinatorial formula for the algebraic monodromy. To obtain these results, we relate nets on the underlying matroid of $\mathcal{A}$ to resonance varieties in positive characteristic. Using modular invariants of nets, we find a new realizability obstruction (over $\mathbb{C}$) for matroids, and we estimate the number of essential components in the first complex resonance variety of $\mathcal{A}$. Our approach also reveals a rather unexpected connection of modular resonance with the geometry of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-representation varieties, which are governed by the Maurer--Cartan equation.

Flat connections and resonance varieties: from rank one to higher ranks

Given a finitely-generated group $π$ and a linear algebraic group $G$, the representation variety Hom$(π,G)$ has a natural filtration by the characteristic varieties associated to a rational representation of $G$. Its algebraic counterpart, the space of $\mathfrak{g}$-valued flat connections on a commutative, differential graded algebra $(A,d)$ admits a filtration by the resonance varieties associated to a representation of $\mathfrak{g}$. We establish here a number of results concerning the structure and qualitative properties of these embedded resonance varieties, with particular attention to the case when the rank 1 resonance variety decomposes as a finite union of linear subspaces. The general theory is illustrated in detail in the case when $π$ is either an Artin group, or the fundamental group of a smooth, quasi-projective variety.

Algebraic models, Alexander-type invariants, and Green-Lazarsfeld sets

We relate the geometry of the resonance varieties associated to a commutative differential graded algebra model of a space to the finiteness properties of the completions of its Alexander-type invariants. We also describe in simple algebraic terms the non-translated components of the degree-one characteristic varieties for a class of non-proper complex manifolds.

Jump loci in the equivariant spectral sequence

We study the homology jump loci of a chain complex over an affine \k-algebra. When the chain complex is the first page of the equivariant spectral sequence associated to a regular abelian cover of a finite-type CW-complex, we relate those jump loci to the resonance varieties associated to the cohomology ring of the space. As an application, we show that vanishing resonance implies a certain finiteness property for the completed Alexander invariants of the space. We also show that vanishing resonance is a Zariski open condition, on a natural parameter space for connected, finite-dimensional commutative graded algebras.

On the second nilpotent quotient of higher homotopy groups, for hypersolvable arrangements

We examine the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group, $π_p$, of the complement of a hypersolvable, non--supersolvable, complex hyperplane arrangement, as a module over the group ring of the fundamental group, $\Zπ_1$. We give a presentation for the $I$--adic completion of $π_p$. We deduce that the second nilpotent $I$--adic quotient of $π_p$ is determined by the combinatorics of the arrangement, and we give a combinatorial formula for the second associated graded piece, $\gr^1_I π_p$. We relate the torsion of this graded piece to the dimensions of the minimal generating systems of the Orlik--Solomon ideal of the arrangement $\A$ in degree $p+2$, for various field coefficients. When $\A$ is associated to a finite simple graph, we show that $\gr^1_I π_p$ is torsion--free, with rank explicitly computable from the graph.

Nonabelian cohomology jump loci from an analytic viewpoint

For a topological space, we investigate its cohomology support loci, sitting inside varieties of (nonabelian) representations of the fundamental group. To do this, for a CDG (commutative differential graded) algebra, we define its cohomology jump loci, sitting inside varieties of (algebraic) flat connections. We prove that the analytic germs at the origin 1 of representation varieties are determined by the Sullivan 1-minimal model of the space. Under mild finiteness assumptions, we show that, up to a degree $q$, the two types of jump loci have the same analytic germs at the origins, when the space and the algebra have the same $q$-minimal model. We apply this general approach to formal spaces (for which we establish the degeneration of the Farber-Novikov spectral sequence), quasi-projective manifolds, and finitely generated nilpotent groups. When the CDG algebra has positive weights, we elucidate some of the structure of (rank one complex) topological and algebraic jump loci: up to degree $q$, all their irreducible components passing through the origin are connected affine subtori, respectively rational linear subspaces. Furthermore, the global exponential map sends all algebraic cohomology jump loci, up to degree $q$, into their topological counterpart.

Vanishing resonance and representations of Lie algebras

We explore a relationship between the classical representation theory of a complex, semisimple Lie algebra \g and the resonance varieties R(V,K)\subset V^* attached to irreducible \g-modules V and submodules K\subset V\wedge V. In the process, we give a precise roots-and-weights criterion insuring the vanishing of these varieties, or, equivalently, the finiteness of certain modules W(V,K) over the symmetric algebra on V. In the case when \g=sl_2(C), our approach sheds new light on the modules studied by Weyman and Eisenbud in the context of Green's conjecture on free resolutions of canonical curves. In the case when \g=sl_n(C) or sp_{2g}(C), our approach yields a unified proof of two vanishing results for the resonance varieties of the (outer) Torelli groups of surface groups, results which arose in recent work by Dimca, Hain, and the authors on homological finiteness in the Johnson filtration of mapping class groups and automorphism groups of free groups.

Arithmetic group symmetry and finiteness properties of Torelli groups

We examine groups whose resonance varieties, characteristic varieties and Sigma-invariants have a natural arithmetic group symmetry, and we explore implications on various finiteness properties of subgroups. We compute resonance varieties, characteristic varieties and Alexander polynomials of Torelli groups, and we show that all subgroups containing the Johnson kernel have finite first Betti number, when the genus is at least four. We also prove that, in this range, the $I$-adic completion of the Alexander invariant is finite-dimensional, and the Kahler property for the Torelli group implies the finite generation of the Johnson kernel.
