Slepton Flavour Mixing and Neutrino Masses

It is pointed out that important contribution to neutrino masses and mixing can come from flavour violating slepton exchange. For low and intermediate $\tanβ$ such effects can dominate over the usual tau Yukawa coupling effects included in the renormalization group evolution. The mixing angles satisfy then the relation different from the fixed point solution of the renormalization group equation, and the desired neutrino mass splitting can be generated.

Supergravity and Supersymmetry Breaking in Four and Five Dimensions

We discuss supersymmetry breaking in the field-theoretical limit of the strongly-coupled heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold, from the different perspectives of four and five dimensions. The former applies to light degrees of freedom below the threshold for five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein excitations, whereas the five-dimensional perspective is also valid up to the Calabi-Yau scale. We show how, in the latter case, two gauge sectors separated in the fifth dimension are combined to form a consistent four-dimensional supergravity. In the lowest order of the $κ^{2/3}$ expansion, we show how a four-dimensional supergravity with gauge kinetic function $f_{1,2}=S$ is reproduced, and we show how higher-order terms give rise to four-dimensional operators that differ in the two gauge sectors. In the four-dimensional approach, supersymmetry is seen to be broken when condensates form on one or both walls, and the goldstino may have a non-zero dilatino component. As in the five-dimensional approach, the Lagrangian is not a perfect square, and we have not identified a vacuum with broken supersymmetry and zero vacuum energy. We derive soft supersymmetry-breaking terms for non-standard perturbative embeddings, that are relevant in more general situations such as type I/type IIB orientifold models.

Cosmological Fine Tuning, Supersymmetry, and the Gauge Heirarchy Problem

We study the extent to which the cosmological fine-tuning problem - why the relic density of neutralino cold dark matter particles $χ$ is similar to that of baryons - is related to the fine-tuning aspect of the gauge hierarchy problem - how one arranges that M_W << M_P without unnatural choices of MSSM parameters. Working in the minimal supergravity framework with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters as inputs, we find that the hierarchical fine tuning is minimized for Ω_χ h^2 \sim 0.1. Conversely, imposing Ω_χ h^2 < 1 does not require small hierarchical fine tuning, but the exceptions to this rule are rather special, with parameters chosen such that m_χ\sim M_Z/2 or M_h/2, or else m_χ \simgt m_t. In the first two cases, neutralino annihilation receives a large contribution from a direct-channel pole, whereas in the third case it is enhanced by the large top Yukawa coupling.

Five-Dimensional Aspects of M-Theory Dynamics and Supersymmetry Breaking

We discuss the reduction of the eleven-dimensional M-theory effective Lagrangian, considering first compactification from eleven to five dimensions on a Calabi-Yau manifold, followed by reduction to four dimensions on an S_1/Z_2 line segment at a larger distance scale. The Calabi-Yau geometry leads to a structure of the five-dimensional Lagrangian that has more freedom than the eleven-dimensional theory. In five dimensions one obtains a non-linear sigma-model coupled to gravity, which implies non-trivial dynamics for the scalar moduli fields in the bulk of the Z_2 orbifold. We discuss solutions to the five-dimensional equations of motion in the presence of sources localized on the boundaries of the Z_2 orbifold that may trigger supersymmetry breaking, e.g., gaugino condensates. The transmission of supersymmetry breaking from the hidden wall to the visible wall is demonstrated in specific models. The role of the messenger of supersymmetry breaking may be played by the gravity supermultiplet and/or by scalar hypermultiplets. The latter include the universal hypermultiplet associated with the Calabi-Yau volume, and also the hypermultiplets associated with deformations of its complex structure, which mix in general.

Beyond the Standard Embedding in M-Theory on S^1/Z_2

In this paper we discuss compactifications of M-theory to four dimensions on X \times S^1/Z_2, in which nonstandard embeddings in the E_8 \times E_8 vacuum gauge bundle are considered. At the level of the effective field theory description of Horava and Witten, this provides a natural extension of well known results at weak coupling, to strongly coupled E_8 \times E_8 heterotic strings. As an application of our results, we discuss models which exhibit an anomalous U(1)_A symmetry in four dimensions, and show how this emerges from the reduction of the d = 11 toplogical term C \wedge G \wedge G, and how it is consistent with d = 4 anomaly cancellation in M-theory. As a further application of nonstandard embeddings, we show how it is possible to obtain an inverse hierarchy of gauge couplings, where the observable sector is more strongly coupled than the hidden one. The basic construction and phenomenological viability of these scenarios is demonstrated.

Stabilized Singlets in Supergravity as a Source of the mu-parameter

Within the context of supergravity-coupled supersymmetry, fields which are gauge and global singlets are usually considered anathema. Their vacuum expectation values are shifted by quadratically divergent tadpole diagrams which are cutoff at the Planck scale, destabilizing the classical potential and driving the singlet field to large values. We demonstrate a new and generic mechanism which stabilizes the singlet in the presence of an extended gauge symmetry. Such a symmetry will be broken down to the Standard Model by the supergravity interactions near the scale of spontaneous supersymmetry-breaking in the hidden-sector (about 10^{10-11} GeV). The resulting singlet expectation value is stabilized and naturally of order the gravitino mass, providing therefore a weak-scale mass for the Higgs fields of the supersymmetric Standard Model (a "mu-parameter"). The resulting low-energy theory is the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model, with all new fields decoupling at the intermediate scale.

Supersymmetry and FCNC effects

We consider Flavour Changing Neutral Current processes in the framework of the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. FCNC constraints on the structure of sfermion mass matrices are reviewed. Furthermore, we analyze supersymmetric contributions to FCNC transitions which remain in the limit of flavour-conserving sfermion mass matrices. Implications of the FCNC constraints on the structure of sfermion mass matrices for SUSY breaking and sfermion mass generation are discussed. We conclude that the supersymmetric flavour problem is intriguing but perhaps not as severe as it is commonly believed.

The Role of the Anomalous U(1)_A for the Solution of the Doublet-Triplet Splitting Problem

The anomalous U(1)_A symmetry provides a generic method of getting accidental symmetries. Therefore, it can play a crucial role in solving the doublet-triplet splitting and the μ-problems via the `pseudo-Goldstone' mechanism: U(1)_A can naturally uncorrelate the two grand unified Higgs sectors in the superpotential and simultaneously induce the desired expectation values through the Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term. The zero modes of the resulting compact vacuum degeneracy can be identified with the massless electroweak Higgs doublets. This automatically solves the doublet-triplet splitting and the μ-problems to all orders in M_P^{-1}. No additional discrete or global symmetries are needed. U(1)_A can also play the role of the `matter parity' and suppress the baryon number violating operators. We present the simplest SU(6) gauge model with a minimal Higgs sector and no doublet-triplet splitting problem. This model also relates the fermion mass hierarchy to the hierarchy of scales and predicts, for the generic non-minimal Kahler potential, approximately universal values for the tree-level electroweak Higgs mass parameters.

Naturally Light Higgs Doublet in the Spinor Representation of SUSY SO(10)

Within the supersymmetric SO(10) GUT we explore the possibility of the light Higgs doublet being a member of the 16-dimensional spinorial representation. This fact is ultimately related with the assumption that the light matter (at least partially) resides in some of the tensor representations as well. Several interesting features emerge. First, provided that the same 16-plet is responsible for the breaking $SO(10) \rightarrow SU(5)$, the heaviness of the top can automatically follow from the field content at $M_{GUT}$, without need of any flavour symmetries. Secondly, the doublet--triplet splitting problem receives a new natural solution. In addition, a dimension=5 (Higgsino mediated) proton decay can be naturally suppressed. We construct explicit SO(10) models with the above properties, with most general superpotentials under the symmetries.

Viable $t$-$b$-$τ$ Yukawa Unification in SUSY SO(10)

The supersymmetric SO(10) GUT with $t$--$b$--$τ$ Yukawa coupling unification has problems with correct electroweak symmetry breaking, experimental constraints (especially $b\rightarrow sγ$) and neutralino abundance, if the scalar masses are universal at the GUT scale. We point out that non-universality of the scalar masses at the GUT scale generated both by (1) renormalization group running from the Planck scale to the GUT scale and (2) $D$--term contribution induced by the reduction of the rank of the gauge group, has a desirable pattern to make the model phemenologically viable (in fact the only one which is consistent with experimental and cosmological constraints). At the same time the top quark mass has to be either close to its quasi IR--fixed point value or below $\sim$170 GeV. We also briefly discuss the spectrum of superpartners which is then obtained.

Spin--1/2 Particle in Gravitational Field of a Rotating Body

Effective Lagrangian describing gravitational source spin-particle spin interactions is given. Cosmological and astrophysical consequences of such interaction are examined. Although stronger than expected, the spin-spin interactions do not change any cosmological effect observed so far. They are important for background primordial neutrinos.

Finite Supersymmetric Threshold Corrections to CKM Matrix Elements in the Large $tanβ$ Regime

We evaluate the finite 1-loop threshold corrections, proportional to $tanβ$, to the down quark mass matrix. These result in corrections to down quark masses and to Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa [CKM] matrix elements. The corrections to CKM matrix elements are the novel feature of this paper. For grand unified theories with large $\tanβ$ these corrections may significantly alter the low energy predictions of four of the CKM matrix elements and the Jarlskog parameter J, a measure of CP violation. The angles $α,\: β$ and $γ$ of the unitarity triangle and the ratio $|{V_{ub} \over V_{cb}}|$, however, are not corrected to this order. We also discuss these corrections in the light of recent models for fermion masses. Here the corrections may be useful in selecting among the various models. Moreover, if one model fits the data, it will only do so for a particular range of SUSY parameters.
