Moret-Bailly families and non-liftable schemes

Generalizing the Moret-Bailly pencil of supersingular abelian surfaces to higher dimensions, we construct for each field of characteristic p>0 a smooth projective variety with trivial dualizing sheaf that does not formally lift to characteristic zero. Our approach heavily relies on local unipotent group schemes, the Beauville--Bogomolov Decomposition for Kähler manifolds with $c_1=0$, and equivariant deformation theory

Discriminant groups of wild cyclic quotient singularities

Let p be prime. We describe explicitly the resolution of singularities of several families of wild Z/pZ-quotient singularities in dimension two, including families that generalize the quotient singularities of type E_6, E_7, and E_8 from p=2 to arbitrary characteristics. We prove that for odd primes, any power of p can appear as the determinant of the intersection matrix of a wild Z/pZ-quotient singularity. We also provide evidence towards the conjecture that in this situation one may choose the wild action to be ramified precisely at the origin.

The Deligne-Illusie Theorem and exceptional Enriques surfaces

Building on the results of Deligne and Illusie on liftings to truncated Witt vectors, we give a criterion for non-liftability that involves only the dimension of certain cohomology groups of vector bundles arising from the Frobenius pushforward of the de Rham complex. Using vector bundle methods, we apply this to show that exceptional Enriques surfaces, a class introduced by Ekedahl and Shepherd-Barron, do not lift to truncated Witt vectors, yet the base of the miniversal formal deformation over the Witt vectors is regular. Using the classification of Bombieri and Mumford, we also show that bielliptic surfaces arising from a quotient by an unipotent group scheme of order $p$ do not lift the ring of Witt vectors. These results hinge on some observations in homological algebra that relates splittings in derived categories to Yoneda extensions and certain diagram completions.

Elliptic curves over the rational numbers with semi-abelian reduction and two-division points

We classify elliptic curves over the rationals whose Néron model over the integers is semi-abelian, with good reduction at p=2, and whose Mordell--Weil group contains an element of order two that stays non-trivial at p=2. Furthermore, we describe those curves where the element of order two is narrow, or where another element of order two exists, and also express our findings in terms of Deligne--Mumford stacks of pointed curves of genus one.

The maximal unipotent finite quotient, unusual torsion in Fano threefolds, and exceptional Enriques surfaces

We introduce and study the maximal unipotent finite quotient for algebraic group schemes in positive characteristics. Applied to Picard schemes, this quotient encodes unusual torsion. We construct integral Fano threefolds where such unusual torsion actually appears. The existence of such threefolds is surprising, because the torsion vanishes for del Pezzo surfaces. Our construction relies on the theory of exceptional Enriques surfaces, as developed by Ekedahl and Shepherd-Barron.

Rigidified torsor cocycles, hypercoverings and bundle gerbes

We give a geometric interpretation of sheaf cohomology for higher degrees n in terms of torsors on the member of degree d=n-1 in hypercoverings of type r=n-2, endowed with an additional data, the so-called rigidification. This generalizes the fact that cohomology in degree one is the group of isomorphism classes of torsors, where the rigidification becomes vacuous, and that cohomology in degree two can be expressed in terms of bundle gerbes, where the rigidification becomes an associativity constraint.

Unirationality and geometric unirationality for hypersurfaces in positive characteristics

Building on work of Segre and Koll'ar on cubic hypersurfaces, we construct over imperfect fields of characteristic p\geq 3 particular hypersurfaces of degree p, which show that geometrically rational schemes that are regular and whose rational points are Zariski dense are not necessarily unirational. A likewise behaviour holds for certain cubic surfaces in characteristic p=2.

Kummer surfaces associated with group schemes

We introduce Kummer surfaces X=Km(CxC) with the group scheme G=mu_2 acting on the self-product of the rational cuspidal curve in characteristic two. The resulting quotients are normal surfaces having a configuration of sixteen rational double points of type A_1, together with a rational double point of type D_4. We show that our Kummer surfaces are precisely the supersingular K3 surfaces with Artin invariant sigma\leq 3, and characterize them by the existence of a certain configuration of thirty curves. After contracting suitable curves, they also appear as normal K3-like coverings for simply-connected Enriques surfaces.

Del Pezzo surfaces and Mori fiber spaces in positive characteristic

We settle a question that originates from results and remarks by Kollár on extremal ray in the minimal model program: In positive characteristics, there are no Mori fibrations on threefolds with only terminal singularities whose generic fibers are geometrically non-normal surfaces. To show this we establish some general structure results for del Pezzo surfaces over imperfect ground fields. This relies on Reid's classification of non-normal del Pezzo surfaces over algebraically closed fields, combined with a detailed analysis of geometrical non-reducedness over imperfect fields of p-degree one.

Enriques surfaces with normal K3-like coverings

We analyze the structure of simply-connected Enriques surface in characteristic two whose K3-like covering is normal, building on the work of Ekedahl, Hyland and Shepherd-Barron. We develop general methods to construct such surfaces and the resulting twistor lines in the moduli stack of Enriques surfaces, including the case that the K3-like covering is a normal rational surface rather then a normal K3 surface. Among other things, we show that elliptic double points indeed do occur. In this case, there is only one singularity. The main idea is to apply flops to Frobenius pullbacks of rational elliptic surfaces, to get the desired K3-like covering. Our results hinge on Lang's classification of rational elliptic surfaces, the determination of their Mordell--Weil lattices by Shioda and Oguiso, and the behavior of unstable fibers under Frobenius pullback via Ogg's Formula. Along the way, we develop a general theory of Zariski singularities in arbitrary dimension, which is tightly interwoven with the theory of height-one group schemes actions and restricted Lie algebras. Furthermore, we determine under what conditions tangent sheaves are locally free, and introduce a theory of canonical coverings for arbitrary proper algebraic schemes.

Moderately ramified actions in positive characteristic

In characteristic two and dimension two, wild Z/2Z-actions on k[[u,v]] ramified precisely at the origin were classified by Artin, who showed in particular that they induce hypersurface singularities. We introduce in this article a new class of wild quotient singularities in any characteristic p>0 arising from certain non-linear actions of Z/pZ on the formal power series ring in n variables. These actions are ramified precisely at the origin, and their rings of invariants in dimension n=2 are hypersurface singularities, with an equation of a form similar to the form found by Artin when p=2. In higher dimension, the rings of invariants are not local complete intersection in general, but remain quasi-Gorenstein. We establish several structure results for such actions and their corresponding rings of invariants.

A higher-dimensional generalization of Mumford's rational pullback for Weil divisors

Mumford defined a rational pullback for Weil divisors on normal surfaces, which is linear, respects effectivity, and satisfies the projection formula. In higher dimensions, the existence of small resolutions of singularities precludes such general results. We single out a higher-dimensional situation that resembles the surface case and show for it that a rational pullback for Weil divisors exists, which is also linear, respects effectivity, and satisfies the projection formula.

Total separable closure and contractions

We show that on integral normal separated schemes whose function field is separably closed, for each pair of points the intersection of the resulting local schemes is local. This extends a result of Artin from rings to schemes. The argument relies on the existence of certain modifications in inverse limits. As an application, we show that Čech cohomology coincides with sheaf cohomology for the Nisnevich topology. Along the way, we generalize the characterization of contractible curves on surfaces by negative-definiteness of the intersection matrix to higher dimensions, using bigness of invertible sheaves on non-reduced schemes.

The p-radical closure of local noetherian rings

Given a local noetherian ring $R$ whose formal completion is integral, we introduce and study the $p$-radical closure $R^\text{prc}$. Roughly speaking, this is the largest purely inseparable $R$-subalgebra inside the formal completion $\hat{R}$. It turns out that the finitely generated intermediate rings $R\subset A\subset R^\text{prc}$ have rather peculiar properties. They can be used in a systematic way to provide examples of integral local rings whose normalization is non-finite, that do not admit a resolution of singularities, and whose formal completion is non-reduced.

On equivariant formal deformation theory

Using the set-up of deformation categories of Talpo and Vistoli, we re-interpret and generalize, in the context of cartesian morphisms in abstract categories, some results of Rim concerning obstructions against extensions of group actions in infinitesimal deformations. Furthermore, we observe that finite étale coverings can be infinitesimally extended and the resulting formal scheme is algebraizable. Finally, we show that pre-Tango structures survive under pullbacks with respect to finite, generically étale surjections $π:X\rightarrow Y$, and record some consequences regarding Kodaira vanishing in degree one.

Geometry on totally separably closed schemes

We prove, for quasicompact separated schemes over ground fields, that Cech cohomology coincides with sheaf cohomology with respect to the Nisnevich topology. This is a partial generalization of Artin's result that for noetherian schemes such an equality holds with respect to the etale topology under the assumption that every finite subset admits an affine open neighborhood (AF-property). Our key result is that on the absolute integral closure of separated algebraic schemes, the intersection of any two irreducible closed subsets remains irreducible. We prove this by establishing general modification and contraction results adapted to inverse limits of schemes. Along the way, we characterize schemes that are acyclic with respect to various Grothendieck topologies, study schemes all whose local rings are strictly henselian, and analyze fiber products of strict localizations.

Points in the fppf topology

Using methods from commutative algebra and topos-theory, we construct topos-theoretical points for the fppf topology of a scheme. These points are indexed by both a geometric point and a limit ordinal. The resulting stalks of the structure sheaf are what we call fppf-local rings. We show that for such rings all localizations at primes are henselian with algebraically closed residue field, and relate them to AIC and TIC rings. Furthermore, we give an abstract criterion ensuring that two sites have point spaces with identical sobrification. This applies in particular to some standard Grothendieck topologies considered in algebraic geometry: Zariski, etale, syntomic, and fppf.
