Baryon Resonances in a Chiral Hadronic Model for the QCD Equation of State

In this paper we study the influence of hadronic resonances on the phase diagram calculated with an effective chiral flavour SU(3) model. We show that varying the couplings of the baryonic resonances to the attractive scalar and the repulsive vector fields has a major impact on the order and location of the chiral phase transition and the possible existence of a critical end point as well as on the thermodynamic properties of the model. Furthermore, we study (strange) quark number fluctuations and show the related susceptibilities both at zero baryochemical potential and when crossing the phase transition line at three different points in the T-mu plane. We obtain the best agreement with current lattice data if we choose a rather strong vector coupling which in our model limits the phase transition to a smooth crossover and implies the non-existence of a critical end point.

Hybrid approaches to heavy ion collisions and future perspectives

We present the current status of hybrid approaches to describe heavy ion collisions and their future challenges and perspectives. First we present a hybrid model combining a Boltzmann transport model of hadronic degrees of freedom in the initial and final state with an optional hydrodynamic evolution during the dense and hot phase. Second, we present a recent extension of the hydrodynamical model to include fluctuations near the phase transition by coupling a chiral field to the hydrodynamic evolution.

Properties of Bare Strange Stars Associated with Surface Electric Fields

In this paper we investigate the electrodynamic surface properties of bare strange quark stars. The surfaces of such objects are characterized by the formation of ultra-high electric surface fields which might be as high as $\sim 10^{19}$ V/cm. These fields result from the formation of electric dipole layers at the stellar surfaces. We calculate the increase in gravitational mass associated with the energy stored in the electric dipole field, which turns out to be only significant if the star possesses a sufficiently strong {\em net} electric charge distribution. In part two of the paper, we explore the intriguing possibility of what happens when the electron layer (sphere) rotates with respect to the stellar strange matter body. We find that in this event magnetic fields can be generated which, for moderate effective rotational frequencies between the electron layer and the stellar body, agree with the magnetic fields inferred for several Central Compact Objects (CCOs). These objects could thus be comfortably interpreted as strange stars whose electron atmospheres rotate at frequencies that are moderately different ($\sim 10$ Hz) from the rotational frequencies of the strange star itself.

Neutron stars with small radii -- the role of delta resonances

Recent neutron star observations suggest that the masses and radii of neutron stars may be smaller than previously considered, which would disfavor a purely nucleonic equation of state. In our model, we use a the flavor SU(3) sigma model that includes delta resonances and hyperons in the equation of state. We find that if the coupling of the delta resonances to the vector mesons is slightly smaller than that of the nucleons, we can reproduce both the measured mass-radius relationship and the extrapolated equation of state.

Kaon properties in (proto)neutron stars

The modification on kaon and antikaon properties of in the interior of (proto-)neutron stars is investigated using a chiral SU(3) model. The parameters of the model are fitted to nuclear matter saturation properties, baryon octet vacuum masses, hyperon optical potentials and low energy a kaon-nucleon scattering lengths. We study the kaon/antikaon medium modification and explore the possibility of antikaon condensation in (proto-)neutron star matter at zero as well as finite temperature/entropy and neutrino content. The effect of hyperons on kaon and antikaon optical potentials is also investigated at different stages of the neutron star evolution.

Kaon and antikaon optical potentials in isospin asymmetric hyperonic matter

The medium modifications of the energies of kaons and antikaons in isospin asymmetric hyperonic matter are investigated using a chiral SU(3) model. The isospin dependent medium effects, are important for asymmetric heavy ion collision experiments, as well as relevant for the neutron star phenomenology as the bulk matter in the interior of the neutron star is highly isospin asymmetric. The effects of hyperons on the medium modifications of the kaons and antikaons in the strange hadronic matter are investigated in the present work and are seen to be appreciable for hadronic matter with large strangeness fractions. The study of the K-mesons in the asymmetric strange hadronic matter can be especially relevant for the compressed strange baryonic matter which can result from asymmetric heavy ion collision experiments in the future accelerator facility FAIR at GSI.

Strangeness in Relativistic Astrophysics

In these lecture notes, the role of strangeness in relativistic astrophysics of compact stars is addressed. The appearance of strange particles, as hyperons, kaons, and strange quarks, in the core of compact stars is examined and common features as well as differences are presented. Impacts on the global properties of compact stars and signals of the presence of exotic matter are outlined for the various strange phases which can appear in the interior at high densities.

Isospin dependent kaon and antikaon optical potentials in dense hadronic matter

Isospin effects on the optical potentials of kaons and antikaons in dense hadronic matter are investigated using a chiral SU(3) model. These effects are important for asymmetric heavy ion collision experiments. In the present work the dispersion relations are derived for kaons and antikaons, compatible with the low energy scattering data, within our model approach. The relations result from the kaonic interactions with the nucleons, vector mesons and scalar mesons in the asymmetric nuclear matter. The isospin asymmetry effects arising from the interactions with the vector-isovector $ρ$- meson as well as the scalar isovector $δ$ mesons are considered. The density dependence of the isospin asymmetry is seen to be appreciable for the kaon and antikaon optical potentials. This can be particularly relevant for the future accelerator facility FAIR at GSI, where experiments using neutron rich beams are planned to be used in the study of compressed baryonic matter.
