Non-perturbative results for the coefficients b_m and b_a-b_p in O(a) improved lattice QCD

We determine the improvement coefficients b_m and b_a-bp in quenched lattice QCD for a range of beta-values, which is relevant for current large scale simulations. At fixed beta, the results are rather sensitive to the precise choices of parameters. We therefore impose improvement conditions at constant renormalized parameters, and the coefficients are then obtained as smooth functions of g_0^2. Other improvement conditions yield a different functional dependence, but the difference between the coefficients vanishes with a rate proportional to the lattice spacing. We verify this theoretical expectation in a few examples and are therefore confident that O(a) improvement is achieved for physical quantities. As a byproduct of our analysis we also obtain the finite renormalization constant which relates the subtracted bare quark mass to the bare PCAC mass.

A local formulation of lattice QCD without unphysical fermion zero modes

The problem of unphysical zero modes in lattice QCD with Wilson fermions can be solved in a clean way by including a mass term proportional to $i \psibar γ_5 τ^3 ψ$ in the standard lattice theory with Nf=2 mass degenerate Wilson quarks. We argue that up to cutoff effects, this lattice theory is equivalent to standard lattice QCD, for suitable choices of the mass parameters and with a natural re-interpretation of observables. On-shell O(a) improvement can be implemented in a straightforward way.

The running quark mass in the SF scheme and its two-loop anomalous dimension

The non-perturbatively defined running quark mass introduced by the ALPHA collaboration is based on the PCAC relation between correlation functions derived from the Schrödinger functional (SF). In order to complete its definition it remains to specify a number of parameters, including the ratio of time to spatial extent, $T/L$, and the angle $θ$ which appears in the spatial boundary conditions for the quark fields. We investigate the running mass in perturbation theory and propose a choice of parameters which attains two desired properties: firstly the two-loop anomalous dimension $\d1SF$ is reasonably small. This is needed in order to ease matching with the non-perturbative computations and to achieve a precise determination of the renormalization group invariant quark mass. Secondly, to one-loop order of perturbation theory, cut-off effects in the step-scaling function are small in O($a$) improved lattice QCD.

Further one-loop results in O(a) improved lattice QCD

Using the Schrödinger functional we have computed a variety of renormalized on-shell correlation functions to one-loop order of perturbation theory. By studying their approach to the continuum limit we have determined the O($a$) counterterms needed to improve the quark mass and a number of isovector quark bilinear operators.

Further results on O(a) improved lattice QCD to one-loop order of perturbation theory

We present results at one-loop order of perturbation theory for various improvement coefficients in on-shell O($a$) improved lattice QCD. In particular we determine the additive counterterm required for on-shell improvement of the isovector vector current. Employing a general mass-independent renormalization scheme we also obtain the coefficients of the O($a$) counterterms which are proportional to the quark mass in the improved isovector pseudo-scalar, axial vector and vector operators. In the latter case a comparison with a recent non-perturbative study is made.

Non-perturbative determination of the axial current normalization constant in O(a) improved lattice QCD

A finite-size technique is employed to compute the normalization constant $Z_A$ of the isovector axial current in lattice QCD. The calculation is carried out in the quenched approximation for values of the bare gauge coupling $g_0$ ranging from 0 to 1. In the lattice action and the lattice expression for the axial current we include the counterterms required for O(a) improvement, with non-perturbatively determined coefficients. With little additional work the normalization constant $Z_V$ of the improved isospin current is also obtained.

Non-perturbative O(a) improvement of lattice QCD

The coefficients multiplying the counterterms required for O($a$) improvement of the action and the isovector axial current in lattice QCD are computed non-perturbatively, in the quenched approximation and for bare gauge couplings $g_0$ in the range $0 \leq g_0 \leq 1$. A finite-size method based on the Schrödinger functional is employed, which enables us to perform all calculations at zero or nearly zero quark mass. As a by-product the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$ is obtained at all couplings considered.

Chiral symmetry and O(a) improvement in lattice QCD

The dominant cutoff effects in lattice QCD with Wilson quarks are proportional to the lattice spacing a. In particular, the isovector axial current satisfies the PCAC relation only up to such effects. Following a suggestion of Symanzik, they can be cancelled by adding local O(a) correction terms to the action and the axial current. We here address a number of theoretical issues in connection with the O(a) improvement of lattice QCD and then show that chiral symmetry can be used to fix the coefficients multiplying the correction terms.

Non-perturbative renormalization of lattice QCD at all scales

A general strategy to solve the non-perturbative renormalization problem in lattice QCD, using finite-size techniques and numerical simulations, is described. As an illustration we discuss the computation of the axial current normalization constant, the running coupling at zero quark masses and the scale evolution of the renormalized axial density. The non-perturbative calculation of O(a) correction terms (as they appear in Symanzik's improvement programme) is another important field of application.

The running coupling from the QCD Schrödinger functional -- a one-loop analysis

Starting from the Schrödinger functional, we give a non-perturbative definition of the running coupling constant in QCD. The spatial boundary conditions for the quark fields are chosen such that the massless Dirac operator in the classical background field has a large smallest eigenvalue. At one-loop order of perturbation theory, we determine the matching coefficient to the $\MSbar$-scheme and discuss the quark mass effects in the $β$-function. To this order, we also compute the Symanzik improvement coefficient necessary to remove the $\Oa$ lattice artefacts originating from the boundaries. For reasonable lattice resolutions and the standard Wilson action, lattice artefacts are found to be only weakly dependent on the lattice spacing $a$, while they vanish quickly with the improved action of Sheikholeslami and Wohlert.

One-loop renormalization of the QCD Schrödinger functional

In a previous publication, we have constructed the Schrödinger functional in Wilson's lattice QCD. It was found that the naive continuum limit leads to a well-defined classical continuum theory. Starting from the latter, a formal continuum definition of the Schrödinger functional is given and its saddle point expansion is carried out to one-loop order of perturbation theory. Dimensional regularization and heat kernel techniques are used to determine the one-loop divergences. These are partly canceled by the usual renormalizations of the quark mass and the coupling constant in QCD. An additional divergence can be absorbed in a multiplicative renormalization of the quark boundary fields. The corresponding boundary counterterm is a local polynomial in the fields, so that we confirm a general expectation of Symanzik.

The Schrödinger functional in QCD

The Schrödinger functional in Wilson's lattice QCD leads to a sensible classical continuum theory which can be taken as starting point for a perturbative analysis. In dimensional regularization, the saddle point expansion of the Schrödinger functional is performed to one-loop order of perturbation theory. The divergences are partly cancelled by the usual coupling constant and quark mass renormalization. An additional divergence can be absorbed in a multiplicative renormalization of the quark boundary fields. The corresponding boundary counterterm being a local polynomial in the fields we confirm the general expectation expressed by Symanzik~\cite{Symanzik}.

On the Schroedinger functional in QCD

In a series of publications [\ref{LNWW},\ref{Schroedinger}], Lüscher et al. have demonstrated the usefulness of the Schrödinger functional in pure SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theory. In this paper, it is shown how their formalism can be extended to include fermions. In the framework of Wilson's lattice QCD, we define the Schrödinger functional by making use of the transfer matrix formalism. Boundary conditions for the fermions arise naturally. We then take the naive continuum limit of the action and show that no lattice peculiarities are left over. The corresponding free Dirac operator has a unique self-adjoint extension with purely discrete spectrum and no zero modes.
