Geometric currents in piezoelectricity

As a simple model for piezoelectricity we consider a gas of infinitely many non-interacting electrons subject to a slowly time-dependent periodic potential. We show that in the adiabatic limit the macroscopic current is determined by the geometry of the Bloch bundle. As a consequence we obtain the King-Smith and Vanderbilt formula up to errors smaller than any power of the adiabatic parameter.

Precise coupling terms in adiabatic quantum evolution: The generic case

For multi-level time-dependent quantum systems one can construct superadiabatic representations in which the coupling between separated levels is exponentially small in the adiabatic limit. Based on results from [BeTe1] for special Hamiltonians we explicitly determine the asymptotic behavior of the exponentially small coupling term for generic two-state systems with real-symmetric Hamiltonian. The superadiabatic coupling term takes a universal form and depends only on the location and the strength of the complex singularities of the adiabatic coupling function. As shown in [BeTe1], first order perturbation theory in the superadiabatic representation then allows to describe the time-development of exponentially small adiabatic transitions and thus to rigorously confirm Michael Berry's [Ber] predictions on the universal form of adiabatic transition histories.

Simple Proof for Global Existence of Bohmian Trajectories

We address the question whether Bohmian trajectories exist for all times. Bohmian trajectories are solutions of an ordinary differential equation involving a wavefunction obeying either the Schroedinger or the Dirac equation. Some trajectories may end in finite time, for example by running into a node of the wavefunction, where the law of motion is ill-defined. The aim is to show, under suitable assumptions on the initial wavefunction and the potential, global existence of almost all solutions. We provide a simpler and more transparent proof of the known global existence result for spinless Schroedinger particles and extend the result to particles with spin, to the presence of magnetic fields, and to Dirac wavefunctions. Our main new result are conditions on the current vector field on configuration-space-time which are sufficient for almost-sure global existence.

On the exit statistics theorem of many particle quantum scattering

We review the foundations of the scattering formalism for one particle potential scattering and discuss the generalization to the simplest case of many non interacting particles. We point out that the "straight path motion" of the particles, which is achieved in the scattering regime, is at the heart of the crossing statistics of surfaces, which should be thought of as detector surfaces. We sketch a proof of the relevant version of the many particle flux across surfaces theorem and discuss what needs to be proven for the foundations of scattering theory in this context.

Precise coupling terms in adiabatic quantum evolution

It is known that for multi-level time-dependent quantum systems one can construct superadiabatic representations in which the coupling between separated levels is exponentially small in the adiabatic limit. For a family of two-state systems with real-symmetric Hamiltonian we construct such a superadiabatic representation and explicitly determine the asymptotic behavior of the exponentially small coupling term. First order perturbation theory in the superadiabatic representation then allows us to describe the time-development of exponentially small adiabatic transitions. The latter result rigorously confirms the predictions of Sir Michael Berry for our family of Hamiltonians and slightly generalizes a recent mathematical result of George Hagedorn and Alain Joye.

Propagation of Wigner functions for the Schroedinger equation with a perturbed periodic potential

Let $V_Γ$ be a lattice periodic potential and $A$ and $ϕ$ external electromagnetic potentials which vary slowly on the scale set by the lattice spacing. It is shown that the Wigner function of a solution of the Schroedinger equation with Hamiltonian operator $H = {1/2} (-\I\nabla_x - A(εx))^2 + V_Γ(x) + ϕ(εx)$ propagates along the flow of the semiclassical model of solid states physics up an error of order $ε$. If $ε$-dependent corrections to the flow are taken into account, the error is improved to order $ε^2$. We also discuss the propagation of the Wigner measure. The results are obtained as corollaries of an Egorov type theorem proved in a previous paper (math-ph/0212041).

Space-Adiabatic Perturbation Theory

We study approximate solutions to the Schrödinger equation $i\epsi\partialψ_t(x)/\partial t = H(x,-i\epsi\nabla_x) ψ_t(x)$ with the Hamiltonian given as the Weyl quantization of the symbol $H(q,p)$ taking values in the space of bounded operators on the Hilbert space $\Hi_{\rm f}$ of fast ``internal'' degrees of freedom. By assumption $H(q,p)$ has an isolated energy band. Using a method of Nenciu and Sordoni \cite{NS} we prove that interband transitions are suppressed to any order in $\epsi$. As a consequence, associated to that energy band there exists a subspace of $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d,\Hi _{\rm f})$ almost invariant under the unitary time evolution. We develop a systematic perturbation scheme for the computation of effective Hamiltonians which govern approximately the intraband time evolution. As examples for the general perturbation scheme we discuss the Dirac and Born-Oppenheimer type Hamiltonians and we reconsider also the time-adiabatic theory.

Effective dynamics for Bloch electrons: Peierls substitution and beyond

We consider an electron moving in a periodic potential and subject to an additional slowly varying external electrostatic potential, $ϕ(\epsi x)$, and vector potential $A(\epsi x)$, with $x \in \R^d$ and $\epsi \ll 1$. We prove that associated to an isolated family of Bloch bands there exists an almost invariant subspace of $L^2(\R^d)$ and an effective Hamiltonian governing the evolution inside this subspace to all orders in $\epsi$. To leading order the effective Hamiltonian is given through the Peierls substitution. We explicitly compute the first order correction. From a semiclassical analysis of this effective quantum Hamiltonian we establish the first order correction to the standard semiclassical model of solid state physics.

Effective N-body dynamics for the massless Nelson model and adiabatic decoupling without spectral gap

The Schroedinger equation for N particles interacting through effective pair potentials is derived from the massless Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoffs. We consider a scaling limit where the particles are slow and heavy, but, in contrast to earlier work [6], no ``weak coupling'' is assumed. To this end we prove a space-adiabatic theorem without gap condition which gives, in particular, control on the rate of convergence in the adiabatic limit.

Space-adiabatic Decoupling to All Orders

A systematic perturbation scheme is developed for approximate solutions to the time-dependent Schroedinger equation with a space-adiabatic Hamiltonian. For a particular isolated energy band, the basic approach is to separate kinematics from dynamics. The kinematics is defined through a subspace of the full Hilbert space for which transitions to other band subspaces are suppressed to all orders and the dynamics operates in that subspace in terms of an effective intraband Hamiltonian. As novel applications we discuss the Born-Oppenheimer theory to second order and derive the nonperturbative definition of the g-factor of the electron within nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics.

Adiabatic Decoupling and Time-Dependent Born-Oppenheimer Theory

We reconsider the time-dependent Born-Oppenheimer theory with the goal to carefully separate between the adiabatic decoupling of a given group of energy bands from their orthogonal subspace and the semiclassics within the energy bands. Band crossings are allowed and our results are local in the sense that they hold up to the first time when a band crossing is encountered. The adiabatic decoupling leads to an effective Schroedinger equation for the nuclei, including contributions from the Berry connection.

Semi-classical motion of dressed electrons

We consider an electron coupled to the quantized radiation field and subject to a slowly varying electrostatic potential. We establish that over sufficiently long times radiation effects are negligible and the dressed electron is governed by an effective one-particle Hamiltonian. In the proof only a few generic properties of the full Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian H_PF enter. Most importantly, H_PF must have an isolated ground state band for |p| < p_c <= \infty with p the total momentum and p_c indicating that the ground state band may terminate. This structure demands a local approximation theorem, in the sense that the one- particle approximation holds until the semi-classical dynamics violates |p|<p_c. Within this framework we prove an abstract Hilbert space theorem which uses no additional information on the Hamiltonian away from the band of interest. Our result is applicable to other time-dependent semi-classical problems. We discuss semi-classical distributions for the effective one-particle dynamics and show how they can be translated to the full dynamics by our results.

Scattering theory from microscopic first principles

We sketch a derivation of abstract scattering theory from the microscopic first principles defined by Bohmian mechanics. We emphasize the importance of the flux-across-surfaces theorem for the derivation, and of randomness in the impact parameter of the initial wave function---even for an, inevitably inadequate, orthodox derivation.

Quantum spacetime without observers: ontological clarity and the conceptual foundations of quantum gravity

We explore the possibility of a Bohmian approach to the problem of finding a quantum theory incorporating gravitational phenomena. The major conceptual problems of canonical quantum gravity are the problem of time and the problem of diffeomorphism invariant observables. We find that these problems are artifacts of the subjectivity and vagueness inherent in the framework of orthodox quantum theory. When we insist upon ontological clarity---the distinguishing characteristic of a Bohmian approach---these conceptual problems vanish. We shall also discuss the implications of a Bohmian perspective for the significance of the wave function, concluding with unbridled speculation as to why the universe should be governed by laws so apparently bizarre as those of quantum mechanics.

Locality and Causality in Hidden Variables Models of Quantum Theory

Motivated by Popescu's example of hidden nonlocality, we elaborate on the conjecture that quantum states that are intuitively nonlocal, i.e., entangled, do not admit a local causal hidden variables model. We exhibit quantum states which either (i) are nontrivial counterexamples to this conjecture or (ii) possess a new kind of more deeply hidden irreducible nonlocality. Moreover, we propose a nonlocality complexity classification scheme suggested by the latter possibility. Furthermore, we show that Werner's (and similar) hidden variables models can be extended to an important class of generalized observables. Finally a result of Fine on the equivalence of stochastic and deterministic hidden variables is generalized to causal models.

Comment on ``Hidden quantum nonlocality revealed by local filters''

In Section 3 of his paper (N. Gisin, Phys. Lett. A 210 (1996) 151), Gisin argues that a ``careless application of generalized quantum measurements can violate Bell's inequality even for mixtures of product states.'' However, the observed violation of the CHSH inequality is not in fact due to the application of generalized quantum measurements, but rather to a misapplication of the inequality itself -- to conditional expectations in which the conditioning depends upon the measurements under consideration.
