A C*-Algebraic Model for Locally Noncommutative Spacetimes

Locally noncommutative spacetimes provide a refined notion of noncommutative spacetimes where the noncommutativity is present only for small distances. Here we discuss a non-perturbative approach based on Rieffel's strict deformation quantization. To this end, we extend the usual C*-algebraic results to a pro-C*-algebraic framework.

Locally Noncommutative Space-Times

Localized noncommutative structures for manifolds with connection are constructed based on the use of vertical star products. The model's main feature is that two points that are far away from each other will not be subject to a deviation from classical geometry while space-time becomes noncommutative for pairs of points that are close to one another.

Formal Deformations of Dirac Structures

In this paper we set-up a general framework for a formal deformation theory of Dirac structures. We give a parameterization of formal deformations in terms of two-forms obeying a cubic equation. The notion of equivalence is discussed in detail. We show that the obstruction for the construction of deformations order by order lies in the third Lie algebroid cohomology of the Dirac structure. However, the classification of inequivalent first order deformations is not given by the second Lie algebroid cohomology but turns out to be more complicated.

The Covariant Picard Groupoid in Differential Geometry

In this article we discuss some general results on the covariant Picard groupoid in the context of differential geometry and interpret the problem of lifting Lie algebra actions to line bundles in the Picard groupoid approach.

Convergence of the Wick Star Product

We construct a Frechet space as a subspace of C^ω(C^n) where the Wick star product converges and is continuous. The resulting Frechet algebra A_h is studied in detail including a *-representation of A_h in the Bargmann-Fock space and a discussion of star exponentials and coherent states.

The H-Covariant Strong Picard Groupoid

The notion of H-covariant strong Morita equivalence is introduced for *-algebras over C = R(i) with an ordered ring R which are equipped with a *-action of a Hopf *-algebra H. This defines a corresponding H-covariant strong Picard groupoid which encodes the entire Morita theory. Dropping the positivity conditions one obtains H-covariant *-Morita equivalence with its H-covariant *-Picard groupoid. We discuss various groupoid morphisms between the corresponding notions of the Picard groupoids. Moreover, we realize several Morita invariants in this context as arising from actions of the H-covariant strong Picard groupoid. Crossed products and their Morita theory are investigated using a groupoid morphism from the H-covariant strong Picard groupoid into the strong Picard groupoid of the crossed products.

Formalite $G_\infty$ adaptee et star-representations sur des sous-varietes coisotropes

Let X be a Poisson manifold and C a coisotropic submanifold and let I be the vanishing ideal of C. In this work we want to construct a star product * on X such that I[[lambda]] is a left ideal for *. Thus we obtain a representation of the star product algebra A[[lambda]] = C^\infty(X)[[lambda]] on B[[lambda]] = A[[lambda]] / I[[lambda]] deforming the usual representation of A on the functions on C. The result follows from a generalization of Tamarkin's formality adapted to the submanifold C. We show that in the case X = R^n and C = R^{n-l} with l > 1 there are no obstructions to this formality.

Completely positive inner products and strong Morita equivalence

We develop a general framework for the study of strong Morita equivalence in which $C^*$-algebras and hermitian star products on Poisson manifolds are treated in equal footing. We compare strong and ring-theoretic Morita equivalences in terms of their Picard groupoids for a certain class of unital $^*$-algebras encompassing both examples. Within this class, we show that both notions of Morita equivalence induce the same equivalence relation but generally define different Picard groups. For star products, this difference is expressed geometrically in cohomological terms.

States and representations in deformation quantization

In this review we discuss various aspects of representation theory in deformation quantization starting with a detailed introduction to the concepts of states as positive functionals and the GNS construction. But also Rieffel induction of representations as well as strong Morita equivalence, the Dirac monopole and the strong Picard groupoid are discussed.

The Picard groupoid in deformation quantization

In this letter we give an overview on recent developments in representation theory of star product algebras. In particular, we relate the *-representation theory of *-algebras over rings C = R(i) with an ordered ring R and i^2 = -1 to the *-representation theory of *-algebras over \mathbb{C} and point out some properties of the Picard groupoid corresponding to the notion of strong Morita equivalence. Some Morita invariants are interpreted as arising from actions of this groupoid.

Bimodule deformations, Picard groups and contravariant connections

We study deformations of invertible bimodules and the behavior of Picard groups under deformation quantization. While K_0-groups are known to be stable under formal deformations of algebras, Picard groups may change drastically. We identify the semiclassical limit of bimodule deformations as contravariant connections and study the associated deformation quantization problem. Our main focus is on formal deformation quantization of Poisson manifolds by star products.

Deformation Quantization: Observable Algebras, States and Representation Theory

In these lecture notes I give an introduction to deformation quantization. The quantization problem is discussed in some detail thereby motivating the notion of star products. Starting from a deformed observable algebra, i.e. the star product algebra, physical applications require to study representations of this algebra. I review the recent development of a representation theory including techniques like Rieffel induction and Morita equivalence. Applications beyond quantization theory are found in noncommutative field theories.

Morita equivalence bimodules for Wick type star products

In this paper, the notion of star products with separation of variables on a Kahler manifold is extended to bimodule deformations of (anti-) holomorphic vector bundles over a Kahler manifold. Here the Fedosov construction is appropriately adapted using the geometric data of a connection in the vector bundle. Moreover, the relation between the star products of Wick and anti Wick type is clarified by constructing a canonical Morita equivalence bimodule as bimodule deformation of the canonical line bundle over the Kahler manifold.

Traces for star products on the dual of a Lie algebra

In this paper, we describe all traces for the BCH star-product on the dual of a Lie algebra. First we show by an elementary argument that the BCH as well as the Kontsevich star-product are strongly closed if and only if the Lie algebra is unimodular. In a next step we show that the traces of the BCH star-product are given by the $\ad$-invariant functionals. Particular examples are the integration over coadjoint orbits. We show that for a compact Lie group and a regular orbit one can even achieve that this integration becomes a positive trace functional. In this case we explicitly describe the corresponding GNS representation. Finally we discuss how invariant deformations on a group can be used to induce deformations of spaces where the group acts on.

Morita equivalence of Fedosov star products and deformed Hermitian vector bundles

Based on the usual Fedosov construction of star products for a symplectic manifold M we give a simple geometric construction of a bimodule deformation for the sections of a vector bundle over M starting with a symplectic connection on M and a connection for E. In the case of a line bundle this gives a Morita equivalence bimodule where the relation between the characteristic classes of the Morita equivalent star products can be found very easily in this framework. Moreover, we also discuss the case of a Hermitian vector bundle and give a Fedosov construction of the deformation of the Hermitian fiber metric.
