Half-Vortex Unbinding and Ising Transition in Constrained Superfluids

We analyze the thermodynamics of the atomic and (nematic) pair superfluids appearing in the attractive two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with a three-body hard-core constraint that has been derived as an effective model for cold atoms subject to strong three-body losses in optical lattices. We show that the thermal disintegration of the pair superfluidity is governed by the proliferation of fractional half-vortices leading to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thousless transition with unusual jump in the helicity modulus. In addition to the (conventional) Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thousless transition out of the atomic superfluid, we furthermore identify a direct thermal phase transition separating the pair and the atomic superfluid phases, and show that this transition is continuous with critical scaling exponents consistent with those of the two-dimensional Ising universality class. We exhibit a direct connection between the partial loss of quasi long-range order at the Ising transition between the two superfluids and the parity selection in the atomic winding number fluctuations that distinguish the atomic from the pair superfluid.

Dynamical Signatures of Edge-State Magnetism on Graphene Nanoribbons

We investigate the edge-state magnetism of graphene nanoribbons using projective quantum Monte Carlo simulations and a self-consistent mean-field approximation of the Hubbard model. The static magnetic correlations are found to be short ranged. Nevertheless, the correlation length increases with the width of the ribbon such that already for ribbons of moderate widths we observe a strong trend towards mean-field-type ferromagnetic correlations at a zigzag edge. These correlations are accompanied by a dominant low-energy peak in the local spectral function and we propose that this can be used to detect edge-state magnetism by scanning tunneling microscopy. The dynamic spin structure factor at the edge of a ribbon exhibits an approximately linearly dispersing collective magnonlike mode at low energies that decays into Stoner modes beyond the energy scale where it merges into the particle-hole continuum.

Generic First-Order vs. Continuous Quantum Nucleation of Supersolidity

We analyze the nucleation of supersolid order out of the superfluid ground state of bosons on the triangular lattice. While the stability of supersolidity against phase separation in this system is by now well established for nearest-neighbor and long-range dipolar interactions, relevant for two-dimensional arrays of ultra-cold polar molecules, here we address directly the nature of the superfluid-to-supersolid transition. Based on symmetry arguments and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we conclude that this quantum phase transition is driven first-order beyond the line of particle-hole symmetry. Along this line, the transition is continuous and its scaling behavior consistent with the three-dimensional (3D) XY universality class. We relate this finding to a 3D Z6 clock model description of the enlarged symmetry of the solid order parameter field. In the generic case however, the symmetry reduces to that of a 3D Z3 clock model, which reflects the first-order nature of the generic superfluid-to-supersolid quantum phase transition on the triangular lattice.

Supersolid Polar Molecules beyond Pairwise Interactions

We explore the phase diagram of ultracold bosonic polar molecules confined to a planar optical lattice of triangular geometry. External static electric and microwave fields can be employed to tune the effective interactions between the polar molecules into a regime of extended two- and three-body repulsions of comparable strength, leading to a rich quantum phase diagram. In addition to various solid phases, an extended supersolid phase is found to persist deep into the three-body dominated regime. While three-body interactions break particle-hole symmetry explicitly, a characteristic supersolid-supersolid quantum phase transition is observed, which indicates the restoration of particle-hole symmetry at half-filling. We revisit the spatial structure of the supersolid at this filling, regarding the existence of a further supersolid phase with three inequivalent sublattices, and provide evidence that this state is excluded also at finite temperatures.

Pair Superfluidity of Three-Body Constrained Bosons in Two Dimensions

We examine the equilibrium properties of lattice bosons with attractive on-site interactions in the presence of a three-body hard-core constraint that stabilizes the system against collapse and gives rise to a dimer superfluid phase formed by virtual hopping processes of boson pairs. Employing quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the ground state phase diagram of this system on the square lattice is analyzed. In particular, we study the quantum phase transition between the atomic and dimer superfluid regime and analyze the nature of the superfluid-insulator transitions. Evidence is provided for the existence of a tricritical point along the saturation transition line, where the transition changes from being first-order to a continuous transition of the dilute bose gas of holes. The Berzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from the dimer superfluid to the normal fluid is found to be consistent with an anomalous stiffness jump, as expected from the unbinding of half-vortices.

Critical Entropy of Quantum Heisenberg Magnets on Simple-Cubic Lattices

We analyze the temperature dependence of the entropy of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the three-dimensional simple-cubic lattice, for both the case of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange interactions. Using optimized extended ensemble quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we extract the entropy at the critical temperature for magnetic order from a finite-size scaling analysis. For the antiferromagnetic case, the critical entropy density equals 0.341(5)$k_B$, whereas for the ferromagnet, a larger value of 0.401(5) $k_B$ is obtained. We compare our simulation results to estimates put forward recently in studies assessing means of realizing the antiferromagnetic Néel state in ultra-cold fermion gases in optical lattices.

Finite temperature ordering of dilute graphene antiferromagnets

We employ large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the magnetic ordering transition among dilute magnetic moments randomly localized on the graphene honeycomb lattice, induced by long-ranged RKKY interactions at low charge carrier concentration. In this regime the effective exchange interactions are ferromagnetic within each sublattice, and antiferromagnetic between opposite sublattices, with an overall cubic decay of the interaction strength with the separation between the moments. We verify explicitly, that this commensurability leads to antiferromagnetic order among the magnetic moments below a finite transition temperature in this two-dimensional system. Furthermore, the ordering temperature shows a crossover in its power-law scaling with the moments' dilution from a low- to a high-concentration regime.

Polar Molecules with Three-Body Interactions on the Honeycomb Lattice

We study the phase diagram of ultra-cold bosonic polar molecules loaded on a two-dimensional optical lattice of hexagonal symmetry controlled by external electric and microwave fields. Following a recent proposal in Nature Physics \textbf{3}, 726 (2007), such a system is described by an extended Bose-Hubbard model of hard-core bosons, that includes both extended two- and three-body repulsions. Using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, exact finite cluster calculations and the tensor network renormalization group, we explore the rich phase diagram of this system, resulting from the strongly competing nature of the three-body repulsions on the honeycomb lattice. Already in the classical limit, they induce complex solid states with large unit cells and macroscopic ground state degeneracies at different fractional lattice fillings. For the quantum regime, we obtain effective descriptions of the various phases in terms of emerging valence bond crystal states and quantum dimer models. Furthermore, we access the experimentally relevant parameter regime, and determine the stability of the crystalline phases towards strong two-body interactions.

Time evolution of correlations in strongly interacting fermions after a quantum quench

Using the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we study the time evolution of density correlations of interacting spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice after a sudden change in the interaction strength. Over a broad range of model parameters, the correlation function exhibits a characteristic light-cone-like time evolution representative of a ballistic transport of information. Such behavior is observed both when quenching an insulator into the metallic region and also when quenching within the insulating region. However, when a metallic state beyond the quantum critical point is quenched deep into the insulating regime, no indication for ballistic transport is observed. Instead, stable domain walls in the density correlations emerge during the time evolution, consistent with the predictions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

A phason disordered two dimensional quantum antiferromagnet

We examine a novel type of disorder in quantum antiferromagnets. Our model consists of localized spins with antiferromagnetic exchanges on a bipartite quasiperiodic structure, which is geometrically disordered in such a way that no frustration is introduced. In the limit of zero disorder, the structure is the perfect Penrose rhombus tiling. This tiling is progressively disordered by augmenting the number of random "phason flips" or local tile-reshuffling operations. The ground state remains Néel ordered, and we have studied its properties as a function of increasing disorder using linear spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the ground state energy decreases, indicating enhanced quantum fluctuations with increasing disorder. The magnon spectrum is progressively smoothed, and the effective spin wave velocity of low energy magnons increases with disorder. For large disorder, the ground state energy as well as the average staggered magnetization tend towards limiting values characteristic of this type of randomized tilings.

Phases and magnetization process of an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland model

We examine ground state properties of the spin-1/2 easy-axis Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with ferromagnetic transverse spin exchange using quantum Monte Carlo and degenerate perturbation theory. For vanishing transverse exchange, the model reduces to an antiferromagnetic Ising model that besides Neel order harbors regions of extensive ground state degeneracy. In the quantum regime, we find a dimerized phase of triplet states, separated from the Neel ordered phase by a superfluid. The quantum phase transitions between these phases are characterized. The magnetization process shows a magnetization plateau at 1/3 of the saturation value, that persists down to the Ising limit, and a further plateau at 1/2 only in the quantum regime. For both plateaus, we determine the crystalline patterns of the localized triplet excitations. No further plateaus nor supersolid phases are found in this model.

Penrose Quantum Antiferromagnet

The Penrose tiling is a perfectly ordered two dimensional structure with fivefold symmetry and scale invariance under site decimation. Quantum spin models on such a system can be expected to differ significantly from more conventional structures as a result of its special symmetries. In one dimension, for example, aperiodicity can result in distinctive quantum entanglement properties. In this work, we study ground state properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Penrose tiling, a model that could also be pertinent for certain three dimensional antiferromagnetic quasicrystals. We show, using spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulation, that the local staggered magnetizations strongly depend on the local coordination number z and are minimized on some sites of five-fold symmetry. We present a simple explanation for this behavior in terms of Heisenberg stars. Finally we show how best to represent this complex inhomogeneous ground state, using the "perpendicular space" representation of the tiling.

Supersolidity from defect-condensation in the extended boson Hubbard model

We study the ground state phase diagram of the hard-core extended boson Hubbard model on the square lattice with both nearest- (nn) and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) hopping and repulsion, using Gutzwiller mean field theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We observe the formation of supersolid states with checkerboard, striped, and quarter-filled crystal structures, when the system is doped away from commensurate fillings. In the striped supersolid phase, a strong anisotropy in the superfluid density is obtained from the simulations; however, the transverse component remains finite, indicating a true two-dimensional superflow. We find that upon doping, the striped supersolid transitions directly into the supersolid with quarter-filled crystal structure, via a first-order stripe melting transition.

Optimized Broad-Histogram Ensembles for the Simulation of Quantum Systems

The efficiency of statistical sampling in broad-histogram Monte Carlo simulations can be considerably improved by optimizing the simulated extended ensemble for fastest equilibration. Here we describe how a recently developed feedback algorithm can be generalized to find optimized sampling distributions for the simulation of quantum systems in the context of the stochastic series expansion (SSE) when defining an extended ensemble in the expansion order. If the chosen update method is efficient, such as non-local updates for systems undergoing a second-order phase transition, the optimized ensemble is characterized by a flat histogram in the expansion order if a variable-length formulation of the SSE is used. Whenever the update method suffers from slowdown, such as at a first-order phase transition, the feedback algorithm shifts weight towards the expansion orders in the transition region, resulting in a non-uniform histogram.

Phase Diagram of Interacting Bosons on the Honeycomb Lattice

We study the ground state properties of repulsively interacting bosons on the honeycomb lattice using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In the hard-core limit the half-filled system develops long ranged diagonal order for sufficiently strong nearest-neighbor repulsion. This staggered solid melts at a first order quantum phase transition into the superfluid phase, without the presence of any intermediate supersolid phase. Within the superfluid phase, both the superfluid density and the compressibility exhibit local minima near particle- (hole-) density one quarter, while the density and the condensate fraction show inflection points in this region. Relaxing the hard-core constraint, supersolid phases emerge for soft-core bosons. The suppression of the superfluid density is found to persist for sufficiently large, finite on-site repulsion.

Simulations of ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices with anharmonic traps

We report results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the canonical and the grand-canonical ensemble of the two- and three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with quadratic and quartic confining potentials. The quantum criticality of the superfluid-Mott insulator transition is investigated both on the boundary layer separating the two coexisting phases and at the center of the traps where the Mott-insulating phase is first established. Recent simulations of systems in quadratic traps have shown that the transition is not in the critical regime due to the finite gradient of the confining potential and that critical fluctuations are suppressed. In addition, it has been shown that quantum critical behavior is recovered in flat confining potentials as they approach the uniform regime. Our results show that quartic traps display a behavior similar to quadratic ones, yet locally at the center of the traps the bulk transition has enhanced critical fluctuations in comparison to the quadratic case. Therefore quartic traps provide a better prerequisite for the experimental observation of true quantum criticality of ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices.

Random-exchange quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice

The ground state properties of random-exchange spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice are investigated using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, exact numerical diagonalizations, and spin wave calculations. Whereas arbirarily weak disorder has a drastic effect on 1d Heisenberg AFM, we find that in two dimensions the characteristics of the ground state like long-range order is robust even against strong disorder. While the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the spin stiffness are exponentially reduced for singular exchange distributions, they vanish only in the limit of infinite randomness.

Bose-Glass Phases in Disordered Quantum Magnets

In disordered spin systems with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange, transitions into and out of a magnetic-field-induced ordered phase pass through a unique regime. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the zero-temperature behavior, these intermediate regions are determined to be a Bose-Glass phase. The localization of field-induced triplons causes a finite compressibility and hence glassiness in the disordered phase.
