A Nonlocal Stochastic Optimal Control with Elliptic-Type Smoothing

We study a nonlocal stochastic optimal control problem in which the control acts through the elliptic smoothing operator $\mathcal{S}=(I-Δ)^{-1}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The state is described by the law of a controlled diffusion, equivalently by a controlled Fokker-Planck equation with coefficients depending on $\mathcal{S}u$. We prove the existence of an optimal control by the direct method in the calculus of variations. We then derive a Pontryagin-type maximum principle by spike variations, relying on sharp properties of the operator $\mathcal{S}$. The result yields a pointwise minimisation rule for the optimal control. We discuss the meaning of the optimal control problem in the case of population dynamics.

Vanishing L2 regularization for the softmax Multi Armed Bandit

Multi Armed Bandit (MAB) algorithms are a cornerstone of reinforcement learning and have been studied both theoretically and numerically. One of the most commonly used implementation uses a softmax mapping to prescribe the optimal policy and served as the foundation for downstream algorithms, including REINFORCE. Distinct from vanilla approaches, we consider here the L2 regularized softmax policy gradient where a quadratic term is subtracted from the mean reward. Previous studies exploiting convexity failed to identify a suitable theoretical framework to analyze its convergence when the regularization parameter vanishes. We prove here theoretical convergence results and confirm empirically that this regime makes the L2 regularization numerically advantageous on standard benchmarks.

A Mean Field Game System and a Related Deterministic Optimal Control Problem

This paper concerns a Mean Field Game (MFG) system related to a Nash type equilibrium for dynamical games associated to large populations. One shows that the MFG system may be viewed as the Euler-Lagrange system for an optimal control problem related to a Fokker-Planck equation with control in the drift. One derives the existence of a weak solution to the MFG system and under more restrictive assumptions one proves a uniqueness result.

Nonlocal Stochastic Optimal Control for Diffusion Processes: Existence, Maximum Principle and Financial Applications

This paper investigates the optimal control problem for a class of parabolic equations where the diffusion coefficient is influenced by a control function acting nonlocally. Specifically, we consider the optimization of a cost functional that incorporates a controlled probability density evolving under a Fokker-Planck equation with state-dependent drift and diffusion terms. The control variable is subject to spatial convolution through a kernel, inducing nonlocal interactions in both drift and diffusion terms. We establish the existence of optimal controls under appropriate convexity and regularity conditions, leveraging compactness arguments in function spaces. A maximum principle is derived to characterize the optimal control explicitly, revealing its dependence on the adjoint state and the nonlocal structure of the system. We further provide a rigorous financial application in the context of mean-variance portfolio optimization, where both the asset drift and volatility are controlled nonlocally, leading to an integral representation of the optimal investment strategy. The results offer a mathematically rigorous framework for optimizing diffusion-driven systems with spatially distributed control effects, broadening the applicability of nonlocal control methods to stochastic optimization and financial engineering.

Controlling a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation via inputs with nonlocal action

This paper concerns an optimal control problem $(P)$ related to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. The problem is deeply related to a stochastic optimal control problem $(P_S)$ for a McKean-Vlasov equation. The existence of an optimal control is obtained for the deterministic problem $(P)$. The existence of an optimal control is established and necessary optimality conditions are derived for a penalized optimal control problem $(P_h)$ related to a backward Euler approximation of the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation (with a constant discretization step $h$). Passing to the limit ($h\rightarrow 0$) one derives the necessary optimality conditions for problem $(P)$.
