SPY: A Magnet System for a High-pressure Gaseous TPC Neutrino Detector

We present a novel conceptual design for a magnet system that provides the magnetic field necessary for the analysis of tracks in a high-pressure gaseous argon TPC while simultaneously serving as a pressure vessel to contain the TPC gas volume. The magnet was developed within a Near Detector proposal for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The high-pressure gaseous argon TPC is a component proposed to be one of the elements of an ensemble of near detectors that are needed for DUNE

Towards a Muon Collider

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Magnetic design of twin aperture cos-theta superconducting dipoles with a semi-analytic approach

The magnetic design is a basic aspect of the superconducting magnets for particle accelerators. When dealing with single aperture cos-theta type dipoles, at the first order, the design can be performed with an analytic approach based on a sector dipole approximation followed by a numerical optimization. For double aperture dipoles the magnetic cross-talk between apertures makes this approach unfeasible. We have developed a semi-analytic model, which starting from a sector dipole approximation, allows to consider the cross-talk between the two apertures. We also demonstrate that the iron yoke contribution to harmonics, although dominant, does not change the optimal configuration found in its absence. As examples, we show two possible electromagnetic designs for the D2 dipole of the High Luminosity upgrade of LHC. The semi-analytic model can be generalized to a larger class of magnets.

Superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures exhibit potential for significant reduction of hysteretic losses

First experimental observations of the ferromagnetic shielding effect in high-Tc superconducting coated conductors were carried out. Experimental results were compared to simulations calling upon finite-element calculations based on the H-formulation of Maxwell equations to model superconducting strips with ferromagnetic shields. Samples of copper-stabilized coated conductors were electroplated with nickel shields and afterwards characterized. Both externally applied oscillating transverse magnetic fields as well as transport currents were studied. Having observed promising gains with respect to the reduction of ac losses in both cases, we further investigated the potential of ferromagnetic shielding. The numerical model was able to reproduce and also predict experimental results very well and will serve as an indispensable tool to determine the potential of soft ferromagnetic materials to significantly reduce hysteretic losses.
