Generalized bounded deformation in non-Euclidean settings

We introduce a new space of generalized functions of bounded deformation $GBD_{F}$, made of functions u whose one-dimensional slice $u(γ) \cdot \dotγ$ has bounded variation in a generalized sense for all curves $γ$ solution of the second order ODE $\ddotγ = F(γ, \dotγ)$ for a fixed field F. For $u \in GBD_{F}$ we study the structure of the jump set in connection its slices and prove the existence of a curvilinear approximate symmetric gradient. With a particular choice of F in terms of the Christoffel symbols of a Riemannian manifold M, we are able to define and recover similar properties for a space of 1-forms on M which have generalized bounded deformation in a suitable sense.

Optimal control problems in transport dynamics with additive noise

Motivated by the applications, a class of optimal control problems is investigated, where the goal is to influence the behavior of a given population through another controlled one interacting with the first. Diffusive terms accounting for randomness in the evolution are taken into account. A well-posedness theory under very low regularity of the control vector fields is developed, as well as a rigorous derivation from stochastic particle systems.

Lower semicontinuity and relaxation for free discontinuity functionals with non-standard growth

A lower semicontinuity result and a relaxation formula for free discontinuity functionals with non-standard growth in the bulk energy are provided. Our analysis is based on a non-trivial adaptation of the blow-up (Ambrosio 1994) and of the global method for relaxation (Bouchitté et al. 1998) to the setting of generalized special function of bounded variation with Orlicz growth. Key tools developed in this paper are an integral representation result and a Poincaré inequality under non-standard growth.

A general criterion for jump set slicing and applications

In this paper a novel criterion for the slicing of the jump set of a function is provided, which bypasses the codimension-one and the parallelogram law techniques developed in $BD$-spaces. The approach builds upon a recent rectifiability result of integralgeometric measures and is further applied to the study of the structure of the jump set of functions with generalized bounded deformation in a Riemannian setting.

Mean-field limits for entropic multi-population dynamical systems

The well-posedness of a multi-population dynamical system with an entropy regularization and its convergence to a suitable mean-field approximation are proved, under a general set of assumptions. Under further assumptions on the evolution of the labels, the case of different time scales between the agents' locations and labels dynamics is considered. The limit system couples a mean-field-type evolution in the space of positions and an instantaneous optimization of the payoff functional in the space of labels.

Brittle membranes in finite elasticity

This work is devoted to the variational derivation of a reduced model for brittle membranes in finite elasticity. The main mathematical tools we develop for our analysis are: (i) a new density result in $GSBV^{p}$ of functions satisfying a maximal-rank constraint on the subgradients, which can be approximated by $C^{1}$-local immersions on regular subdomains of the cracked set, and (ii) the construction of recovery sequences by means of suitable $W^{1,\infty}$ diffeomorphisms mapping the regular subdomains onto the fractured configuration.

Non-interpenetration conditions in the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith fracture

We characterize the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith-fracture theories under non-interpenetration constraints. In particular, sequences of deformations satisfying a Ciarlet-Nečas condition in SBV^2 and for which a convergence of the energies is ensured, are shown to admit asymptotic representations in GSBD^2 satisfying a suitable contact condition. With an explicit counterexample, we prove that this result fails if convergence of the energies does not hold. We further prove that each limiting displacement satisfying the contact condition can be approximated by an energy-convergent sequence of deformations fulfilling a Ciarlet-Nečas condition. The proof relies on a piecewise Korn-Poincaré inequality in GSBD2, on a careful blow-up analysis around jump points, as well as on a refined GSBD^2-density result guaranteeing enhanced contact conditions for the approximants.

A new proof of compactness in G(S)BD

We prove a compactness result in GBD which also provides a new proof of the compactness theorem in GSBD, due to Chambolle and Crismale [5, Theorem 1.1]. Our proof is based on a Fréchet-Kolmogorov compactness criterion and does not rely on Korn or Poincaré-Korn inequalities.

Topology optimization for quasistatic elastoplasticity

Topology optimization is concerned with the identification of optimal shapes of deformable bodies with respect to given target functionals. The focus of this paper is on a topology optimization problem for a time-evolving elastoplastic medium under kinematic hardening. We adopt a phase-field approach and argue by subsequent approximations, first by discretizing time and then by regularizing the flow rule. Existence of optimal shapes is proved both at the time-discrete and time-continous level, independently of the regularization. First order optimality conditions are firstly obtained in the regularized time-discrete setting and then proved to pass to the nonregularized time-continuous limit. The phase-field approximation is shown to pass to its sharp-interface limit via an evolutive variational convergence argument.

Mean-field selective optimal control via transient leadership

A mean-field selective optimal control problem of multipopulation dynamics via transient leadership is considered. The agents in the system are described by their spatial position and their probability of belonging to a certain population. The dynamics in the control problem is characterized by the presence of an activation function which tunes the control on each agent according to the membership to a population, which, in turn, evolves according to a Markov-type jump process. This way, a hypothetical policy maker can select a restricted pool of agents to act upon based, for instance, on their time-dependent influence on the rest of the population. A finite-particle control problem is studied and its mean-field limit is identified via $Γ$-convergence, ensuring convergence of optimal controls. The dynamics of the mean-field optimal control is governed by a continuity-type equation without diffusion. Specific applications in the context of opinion dynamics are discussed with some numerical experiments.

Brittle fracture in linearly elastic plates

In this work we derive by Gamma-convergence techniques a model for brittle fracture linearly elastic plates. Precisely, we start from a brittle linearly elastic thin film with positive thickness $ρ$ and study the limit as $ρ$ tends to 0. The analysis is performed with no a priori restrictions on the admissible displacements and on the geometry of the fracture set. The limit model is characterized by a Kirchhoff-Love type of structure.

Topology optimization for incremental elastoplasticity: a phase-field approach

We discuss a topology optimization problem for an elastoplastic medium. The distribution of material in a region is optimized with respect to a given target functional taking into account compliance. The incremental elastoplastic problem serves as state constraint. We prove that the topology optimization problem admits a solution. First-order optimality conditions are obtained by considering a regularized problem and passing to the limit.

An alternate Lagrangian scheme for spatially inhomogeneous evolutionary games

An alternate Lagrangian scheme at discrete times is proposed for the approximation of a nonlinear continuity equation arising as a mean-field limit of spatially inhomogeneous evolutionary games, describing the evolution of a system of spatially distributed agents with strategies, or labels, whose payoff depends also on the current position of the agents. The scheme is Lagrangian, as it traces the evolution of position and labels along characteristics and is alternate, as it consists of the following two steps: first the distribution of strategies or labels is updated according to a best performance criterion and then this is used by the agents to evolve their position. A general convergence result is provided in the space of probability measures. In the special cases of replicator-type systems and reversible Markov chains, variants of the scheme, where the explicit step in the evolution of the labels is replaced by an implicit one, are also considered and convergence results are provided.

A Dimension-Reduction Model for Brittle Fractures on Thin Shells with Mesh Adaptivity

In this paper we derive a new two-dimensional brittle fracture model for thin shells via dimension reduction, where the admissible displacements are only normal to the shell surface. The main steps include to endow the shell with a small thickness, to express the three-dimensional energy in terms of the variational model of brittle fracture in linear elasticity, and to study the $Γ$-limit of the functional as the thickness tends to zero. The numerical discretization is tackled by first approximating the fracture through a phase field, following an Ambrosio-Tortorelli like approach, and then resorting to an alternating minimization procedure, where the irreversibility of the crack propagation is rigorously imposed via an inequality constraint. The minimization is enriched with an anisotropic mesh adaptation driven by an a posteriori error estimator, which allows us to sharply track the whole crack path by optimizing the shape, the size, and the orientation of the mesh elements. Finally, the overall algorithm is successfully assessed on two Riemannian settings and proves not to bias the crack propagation.

Data-driven Evolutions of Critical Points

In this paper we are concerned with the learnability of energies from data obtained by observing time evolutions of their critical points starting at random initial equilibria. As a byproduct of our theoretical framework we introduce the novel concept of mean-field limit of critical point evolutions and of their energy balance as a new form of transport. We formulate the energy learning as a variational problem, minimizing the discrepancy of energy competitors from fulfilling the equilibrium condition along any trajectory of critical points originated at random initial equilibria. By Gamma-convergence arguments we prove the convergence of minimal solutions obtained from finite number of observations to the exact energy in a suitable sense. The abstract framework is actually fully constructive and numerically implementable. Hence, the approximation of the energy from a finite number of observations of past evolutions allows to simulate further evolutions, which are fully data-driven. As we aim at a precise quantitative analysis, and to provide concrete examples of tractable solutions, we present analytic and numerical results on the reconstruction of an elastic energy for a one-dimensional model of thin nonlinear-elastic rod.

Irreversibility and alternate minimization in phase field fracture: a viscosity approach

This work is devoted to the analysis of convergence of an alternate (staggered) minimization algorithm in the framework of phase field models of fracture. The energy of the system is characterized by a nonlinear splitting of tensile and compressive strains, featuring non-interpenetration of the fracture lips. The alternating scheme is coupled with an $L^{2}$-penalization in the phase field variable, driven by a viscous parameter~$δ>0$, and with an irreversibility constraint, forcing the monotonicity of the phase field only w.r.t.~time, but not along the whole iterative minimization. We show first the convergence of such a scheme to a viscous evolution for $δ>0$ and then consider the vanishing viscosity limit $δ\to 0$.

Crack growth by vanishing viscosity in planar elasticity

We show the existence of quasistatic evolutions in a fracture model for brittle materials by a vanishing viscosity approach, in the setting of planar linearized elasticity. The crack is not prescribed a priori and is selected in a class of (unions of) regular curves. To prove the result, it is crucial to analyze the properties of the energy release rate.

Analysis of staggered evolutions for nonlinear energies in phase field fracture

We consider a class of separately convex phase field energies employed in fracture mechanics, featuring non-interpenetration and a general softening behavior. We analyze the time-discrete evolutions generated by a staggered minimization scheme, where fracture irreversibility is modeled by a monotonicity constraint on the phase field variable. After recasting the staggered scheme by means of gradient flows, we characterize the time-continuous limits of the discrete solutions in terms of balanced viscosity evolutions, parametrized by their arc-length with respect to the L2-norm (for the phase field) and the H1-norm (for the displacement field). By a careful study of the energy balance we deduce that time-continuous evolutions may still exhibit an alternate behavior in discontinuity times.
