1.71 Tb/s Single-Channel and 56.51 Tb/s DWDM Transmission over 96.5 km Field-Deployed SSMF

We report an industry leading optical dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) field trial with line rates per channel exceeding 1.66 Tb/s using 130 GBaud dual-polarization probabilistic constellation shaping 256-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-PCS256QAM) in a high capacity data center interconnect (DCI) scenario. This research trial was performed on 96.5 km of field-deployed standard single mode G.652 fiber infrastructure of Deutsche Telekom in Germany employing Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. A total of 34 channels were transmitted with 150 GHz spacing for a total fiber capacity of 56.51 Tb/s and a spectral efficiency higher than 11bit/s/Hz. In the single-channel transmission scenario 1.71 Tb/s was achieved over the same link. In addition, we successfully demonstrate record net bitrates of 1.88 Tb/s in back-to-back (B2B) using 130 GBaud DP-PCS400QAM.

Comment on "Coherence measures for heralded single-photon sources"

A recent Brief Report [Phys. Rev. A 79, 035801 (2009)] investigates two figures of merit for heralded photon sources based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion with a continuous pump, namely the time-averaged temporal coherence between the signal and idler beams and the time-averaged conditioned second-order degree of coherence for photons in the heralded arm. However, contrary to what is claimed, no one-arm second-order effect is actually measured.

Photon bunching in parametric down-conversion with continuous wave excitation

The first direct measurement of photon bunching (g2 correlation function) in one output arm of a spontaneous-parametric-down-conversion source operated with a continuous pump laser in the single-photon regime is demonstrated. The result is in agreement with the statistics of a thermal field of the same coherence length, and shows the feasibility of investigating photon statistics with compact cw-pumped sources. Implications for entanglement-based quantum cryptography are discussed.

A quantitative model for the effective decoherence of a quantum computer with imperfect unitary operations

The problem of the quantitative degradation of the performance of a quantum computer due to noisy unitary gates (imperfect external control) is studied. It is shown that quite general conclusions on the evolution of the fidelity can be reached by using the conjecture that the set of states visited by a quantum algorithm can be replaced by the uniform (Haar) ensemble. These general results are tested numerically against quantum computer simulations of two particular periodically driven quantum systems.
