Dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral gauge theories

We study the dynamics of $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theories with massless fermions belonging to various combinations of the symmetric, antisymmetric or fundamental representations. We limit ourselves to the gauge-anomaly-free and asymptotically free systems. 't Hooft anomaly-matching conditions severely limit the possible RG flows. In vectorlike theories such as the quantum chromodynamics, gauge-invariant ``quark-antiquark" condensates form and characterize the IR dynamics, and the anomaly matching involves the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. In some other special cases, such as the Bars-Yankielowicz (BY) or Georgi-Glashow (GG) models, a hypothetical solution was proposed in the literature, with no global symmetry breaking and with some simple set of composite massless fermions saturating all the anomalies. For the BY and GG systems, actually, a more plausible candidate for their IR physics is the dynamical Higgs phase, with a few simple bi-fermion color-flavor locked condensates, breaking the color and flavor symmetries, partially or totally. Remarkably, the 't Hooft anomaly-matching (and generalized anomaly-matching) conditions are automatically satisfied in this phase. Another interesting possibility, occurring in some chiral gauge theories, is dynamical Abelianization, familiar from ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. We explore here even more general types of possible IR phases than the ones mentioned above, for wider classes of models. With the help of large-N arguments we look for IR free theories, whereas the MAC (maximal attractive channel) criterion might suggest some simple bi-fermion condensates characterizing the IR dynamics of the systems. In many cases the low-energy effective theories are found to be described by quiver-like gauge theories, some of the (nonAbelian) gauge groups are infrared-free while some others might be asymptotically free.

Near-BPS Skyrmions

We consider the Skyrme model in the near-BPS limit. The BPS part is made of the sextic term plus a potential and the deformation is made of the standard massive Skyrme model controlled by a small parameter $ε\ll1$. In order to keep the perturbation under theoretical and computational control, we find a model for which BPS Skyrmions have compact support, henceforth denoted as compactons, and the spherically symmetric $B=1$ Skyrmion represents the most stable solution. We use the $ε$-expansion scheme to systematically calculate the corrections to the energy and compare with the exact numerical computations in the $B=1$ sector. Finally, we use the $ε$-expansion scheme to calculate the bound state of two $B=1$ Skyrmions and its binding energy, which corresponds, prior to quantization, to the deuteron in our model.

Dynamical Abelianization and anomalies in chiral gauge theories

We explore the idea that in some class of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories the infrared dynamics might be characterized by a bifermion condensate in the adjoint representation of the color gauge group. As an illustration, in this work we revisit an $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theory with Weyl fermions in a symmetric ($ψ$) and anti-antisymmetric ($χ$) tensor representations, together with eight fermions in the anti-fundamental representations ($η$), which we called $ψχη$ model in the previous investigations. We study the infrared dynamics of this system more carefully, by assuming dynamical Abelianization, a phenomenon familiar from ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories, and by analyzing the way various continuous and discrete symmetries are realized at low energies. We submit then these ideas to a more stringent test, by taking into account some higher-form symmetries and the consequent mixed anomalies. A detailed analysis of the mixed anomalies involving certain $0$-form $U(1)$ symmetries and the color-flavor locked $1$-form $Z_N$ symmetry in the $ψχη$ system shows that the proposed infrared dynamics is consistent with it.

On the time dependence of holographic complexity for charged AdS black holes with scalar hair

In the presence of a scalar hair perturbation, the Cauchy horizon of a Reissner-Nordström black hole disappears and is replaced by the rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, which leads to a Kasner singularity [1,2]. We study the time-dependence of holographic complexity, both for the volume and for the action proposals, in a class of models with hairy black holes. Volume complexity can only probe a portion of the black hole interior that remains far away from the Kasner singularity. We provide numerical evidence that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the volume complexity rate in all the parameter space that we explored. Action complexity can instead probe a portion of the spacetime closer to the singularity. In particular, the complexity rate diverges at the critical time $t_c$ for which the Wheeler-DeWitt patch touches the singularity. After the critical time the action complexity rate approaches a constant. We find that the Kasner exponent does not directly affect the details of the divergence of the complexity rate at $t=t_c$ and the late-time behaviour of the complexity. The Lloyd bound is violated by action complexity at finite time, because the complexity rate diverges at $t=t_c$. We find that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the asymptotic action complexity rate in all the parameter space that we investigated.

Anomalies and phases of strongly-coupled chiral gauge theories: recent developments

After many years of investigations, our understanding of the dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral gauge theories is still quite unsatisfactory today. Conventional wisdom about strongly-coupled gauge theories, successfully applied to QCD, is not always as useful in chiral gauge theories. Recently some new ideas and techniques have been developed, which involve concepts of generalized symmetries, of gauging a discrete center symmetry, and of generalizing the 't Hooft anomaly matching constraints to include certain mixed symmetries. This new development has been applied to chiral gauge theories, leading to many interesting, sometimes quite unexpected, results. For instance, in the context of generalized Bars-Yankielowicz and generalized Georgi-Glashow models, these new types of anomalies give a rather clear indication in favor of the dynamical Higgs phase, against confining, flavor symmetric vacua. Another closely related topics is strong anomaly and the effective low-energy action representing it. It turns out that they have significant implications on the phase of chiral gauge theories, giving indications consistent with the findings based on the generalized anomalies. Some striking analogies and contrasts between the massless QCD and chiral gauge theories seem to emerge from these discussions. The aim of this work is to review these developments.

Strong anomaly and phases of chiral gauge theories

We present a simple argument which seems to favor, when applied to a large class of strongly-coupled chiral gauge theories, a dynamical-Higgs-phase scenario, characterized by certain bifermion condensates. Flavor symmetric confining vacua described in the infrared by a set of baryonlike massless composite fermions saturating the conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching equations, appear instead disfavored. Our basic criterion is that it should be possible to write a strong-anomaly effective action, analogous to the one used in QCD to describe the solution of the $U(1)_A$ problem in the low-energy effective action, by using the low-energy degrees of freedom in the hypothesized infrared theory. We also comment on some well-known ideas such as the complementarity and the large $N$ planar dominance in the context of these chiral gauge theories. Some striking analogies and contrasts between the massless QCD and chiral gauge theories seem to emerge from this discussion.

Holographic Nuclear Physics with Massive Quarks

We discuss nuclear physics in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, in the limit of large number $N_c$ of colors and large 't Hooft coupling, with the addition of a finite mass for the quarks. Individual baryons are described by classical solitons whose size is much smaller than the typical distance in nuclear bound states, thus we can use the linear approximation to compute the interaction potential and provide a natural description for lightly bound states. We find the classical geometry of nuclear bound states for baryon numbers up to B=8. The effect of the finite pion mass - induced by the quark mass via the GMOR relation - is to decrease the binding energy of the nuclei with respect to the massless case. We discuss the finite density case with a particular choice of a cubic lattice, for which we find the critical chemical potential, at which the hadronic phase transition occurs.

Near-BPS baby Skyrmions with Gaussian tails

We consider the baby Skyrme model in a physically motivated limit of reaching the restricted or BPS baby Skyrme model, which is a model that enjoys area-preserving diffeomorphism invariance. The perturbation consists of the kinetic Dirichlet term with a small coefficient $ε$ as well as the standard pion mass term, with coefficient $εm_1^2$. The pions remain lighter than the soliton for any $ε$ and therefore the model is physically acceptable, even in the $ε\to 0$ limit. The version of the BPS baby Skyrme model we use has BPS solutions with Gaussian tails. We perform full numerical computations in the $ε\to 0$ limit and even reach the strict $ε=0$ case, finding new nontrivial BPS solutions, for which we do not yet know the analytic form.

Probing the dynamics of chiral SU(N) gauge theories via generalized anomalies

We study symmetries and dynamics of chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories with matter Weyl fermions in a two-index symmetric ($ψ$) or anti-symmetric tensor ($χ$) representation, together with $N \pm 4 + p $ fermions in the anti-fundamental ($η$) and $p$ fermions in the fundamental ($ξ$) representations. They are known as the Bars-Yankielowicz (the former) and the generalized Georgi-Glashow models (the latter). The conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching algorithm is known to allow a confining, chirally symmetric vacuum in all these models, with a simple set of massless baryonlike composite fermions describing the infrared physics. We analyzed recently one of these models ($ψη$ model), by applying the ideas of generalized symmetries and the consequent, stronger constraints involving certain mixed anomalies, finding that the confining, chirally symmetric, vacuum is actually inconsistent. In the present paper this result is extended to a wider class of the Bars-Yankielowicz and the generalized Georgi-Glashow models. It is shown that for all these models with $N$ and $p$ both even, at least, the generalized anomaly matching requirement forbids the persistence of the full chiral symmetries in the infrared if the system confines. The most natural and consistent possibility is that some bifermion condensates form, breaking the color gauge symmetry dynamically, together with part of the global symmetry.

Analytic Baby Skyrmions at Finite Density

We introduce a consistent ansatz for the baby Skyrme model in (2+1)-dimensions which is able to reduce the complete set of field equations to just one equation for the profile function in situations in which the baby baryon charge can be arbitrary. Many analytic solutions both with and without the inclusion of the effects of the minimal coupling with the Maxwell field are constructed. Linear stability and other physical properties are discussed. These analytic gauged baby Skyrmions generate a persistent $U(1)$ current which cannot be turned off continuously as it is tied to the topological charge of the baby Skyrmions themselves. In the simplest non-trivial case of a gauged baby Skyrmion, a very important role is played by the Mathieu equation with an effective coupling constant which can be computed explicitly. These configurations are a very suitable arena to test resurgence in a non-integrable context.

Near-BPS baby Skyrmions

We consider the baby-Skyrme model in the regime close to the so-called restricted baby-Skyrme model, which is a BPS model with area-preserving diffeomorphism invariance. The perturbation takes the form of the standard kinetic Dirichlet term with a small coefficient $ε$. Classical solutions of this model, to leading order in $ε$, are called restricted harmonic maps. In the BPS limit ($ε\to 0$) of the model with the potential being the standard pion-mass term, the solution with unit topological charge is a compacton. Using analytical and numerical arguments we obtain solutions to the problem for topological sectors greater than one. We develop a perturbative scheme in $ε$ with which we can calculate the corrections to the BPS mass. The leading order ($\mathcal{O}(ε^1)$) corrections show that the baby Skyrmion with topological charge two is energetically preferred. The binding energy requires us to go to the third order in $ε$ to capture the relevant terms in perturbation theory, however, the binding energy contributes to the total energy at order $ε^2$. We find that the baby Skyrmions - in the near-BPS regime - are compactons of topological charge two, that touch each other on their periphery at a single point and with orientations in the attractive channel.

Dynamics from symmetries in chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories

The symmetries and dynamics of simple chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories, with matter Weyl fermions in a two-index symmetric tensor and $N+4$ anti-fundamental representations, are examined, by taking advantage of the recent developments involving the ideas of generalized symmetries, gauging of discrete center 1-form symmetries and mixed 't Hooft anomalies. This class of models are particularly interesting because the conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching constraints allow a chirally symmetric confining vacuum, with no condensates breaking the $U(1) \times SU(N+4)$ flavor symmetry, and with certain set of massless baryonlike composite fermions saturating all the associated anomaly triangles. Our calculations show that in such a vacuum the UV-IR matching of some $0$-form$-$$1$-form mixed 't Hooft anomalies fails. This implies, for the theories with even $N$ at least, that a chirally symmetric confining vacuum contemplated earlier in the literature actually cannot be realized dynamically. In contrast, a Higgs phase characterized by some gauge-noninvariant bifermion condensates passes our improved scrutiny.

Deuteron electric dipole moment from holographic QCD

We compute the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron in the holographic QCD model of Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto. Previously, the leading contribution to the EDM of nucleons was computed, finding opposite values for the proton and the neutron which then cancel each other in the deuteron state. Here we compute the next-to-leading order contribution which provides a splitting between their absolute value. At large $N_{\rm c}$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$, nuclei are bound states of almost isolated nucleons. In particular, we find that in this limit the deuteron EDM is given by the splitting between proton and neutron EDMs. Our estimate for the deuteron EDM extrapolated to the physical values of $N_{\rm c}$, $λ$, $M_{\rm KK}$ and $m_q$ is $\mathcal{D}_D = -0.92\times 10^{-16} θ e \cdot {cm}$. This is consistent, in sign and magnitude, with results found previously in the literature and obtained using completely different methods.

Vortons with Abelian and non-Abelian currents and their stability

We explore vorton solutions in the Witten's $U(1) \times U(1)$ model for cosmic strings and in a modified version $U(1) \times SO(3)$ obtained by introducing a triplet of non-Abelian fields to condense inside the string. We restrict to the case in which the unbroken symmetry in the bulk remains global. The vorton solutions are found numerically for certain choices of parameters and compared with an analytical solutions obtained in the thin vorton limit. We also discuss the vorton decay into Q-rings (or spinning Q-balls) and, to some extent, the time dependent behavior of vortons above the charge threshold.

Gauging 1-form center symmetries in simple $SU(N)$ gauge theories

Consequences of gauging exact $Z_k^C$ center symmetries in several simple $SU(N)$ gauge theories, where $k$ is a divisor of $N$, are investigated. Models discussed include: the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $N_f$ copies of Weyl fermions in self-adjoint single-column antisymmetric representation, the well-discussed adjoint QCD, QCD-like theories in which the quarks are in a two-index representation of $SU(N)$, and a chiral $SU(N)$ theory with fermions in the symmetric as well as in anti-antisymmetric representations but without fundamentals. Mixed 't Hooft anomalies between the 1-form $Z_k^C$ symmetry and some 0-form (standard) discrete symmetry provide us with useful information about the infrared dynamics of the system. In some cases they give decisive indication to select only few possiblities for the infrared phase of the theory.

Large-$N$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model on a Euclidean torus: uniqueness and stability of the vacuum

In this paper we examine analytically the large-$N$ gap equation and its solution for the $2D$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model defined on a Euclidean spacetime torus of arbitrary shape and size ($L, β)$, $β$ being the inverse temperature. We find that the system has a unique homogeneous phase, with the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ fields $n_i$ acquiring a dynamically generated mass $\langleλ\rangle\geΛ^2$ (analogous to the mass gap of $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in $4D$), for any $β$ and $L$. Several related topics in the recent literature are discussed. One concerns the possibility, which turns out to be excluded according to our analysis, of a "Higgs-like" - or deconfinement - phase at small $L$ and at zero temperature. Another topics involves "soliton-like (inhomogeneous) solutions of the generalized gap equation, which we do not find. A related question concerns a possible instability of the standard $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ vacuum on ${\mathbb{R}}^{2}$, which is shown not to occur. In all cases, the difference in the conclusions can be traced to the existence of certain zeromodes and their proper treatment. The $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model with twisted boundary conditions is also analyzed. The $θ$ dependence and different limits involving $N$, $β$ and $L$ are briefly discussed.

Dynamics and symmetries in chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories

Dynamics and symmetry realization in various chiral gauge theories in four dimensions are investigated, generalizing a recent work by M. Shifman and the present authors, by relying on the standard 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions and on some other general ideas. These requirements are so strong that the dynamics of the systems are severely constrained. Color-flavor or color-flavor-flavor locking, dynamical Abelianization, and combinations of these, are powerful ideas which often leads to solutions of the anomaly matching conditions. Moreover, a conjecture is made on generation of a mass hierarchy associated with symmetry breaking in chiral gauge theories, which has no analogues in vector-like gauge theories such as QCD.

On Some Universal Features of the Holographic Quantum Complexity of Bulk Singularities

We perform a comparative study of the time dependence of the holographic quantum complexity of some space like singular bulk gravitational backgrounds. This is done by considering the two available notions of complexity, one that relates it to the maximal spatial volume and the other that relates it to the classical action of the Wheeler-de Witt patch. We calculate and compare the leading and the next to leading terms and find some universal features. The complexity decreases towards the singularity for both definitions, for all types of singularities studied. In addition the leading terms have the same quantitative behavior for both definitions in restricted number of cases and the behaviour itself is different for different singular backgrounds. The quantitative details of the next to leading terms, such as their specific form of time dependence, are found not to be universal. They vary between the different cases and between the different bulk definitions of complexity. We also address some technical points inherent to the calculation.
