Epidemic Outbreaks in Networks with Equitable or Almost-Equitable Partitions

We study the diffusion of epidemics on networks that are partitioned into local communities. The gross structure of hierarchical networks of this kind can be described by a quotient graph. The rationale of this approach is that individuals infect those belonging to the same community with higher probability than individuals in other communities. In community models the nodal infection probability is thus expected to depend mainly on the interaction of a few, large interconnected clusters. In this work, we describe the epidemic process as a continuous-time individual-based susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model using a first-order mean-field approximation. A key feature of our model is that the spectral radius of this smaller quotient graph (which only captures the macroscopic structure of the community network) is all we need to know in order to decide whether the overall healthy-state defines a globally asymptotically stable or an unstable equilibrium. Indeed, the spectral radius is related to the epidemic threshold of the system. Moreover we prove that, above the threshold, another steady-state exists that can be computed using a lower-dimensional dynamical system associated with the evolution of the process on the quotient graph. Our investigations are based on the graph-theoretical notion of equitable partition and of its recent and rather flexible generalization, that of almost equitable partition.

Stochastic differential equations with variable structure driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise and sliding mode dynamic

This work is concerned with existence of weak solutions to discon- tinuous stochastic differential equations driven by multiplicative Gaus- sian noise and sliding mode control dynamics generated by stochastic differential equations with variable structure, that is with jump nonlin- earity. The treatment covers the finite dimensional stochastic systems and the stochastic diffusion equation with multiplicative noise.

Dissipative stochastic evolution equations driven by general Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise

We study a class of stochastic evolution equations with a dissipative forcing nonlinearity and additive noise. The noise is assumed to satisfy rather general assumptions about the form of the covariance function; our framework covers examples of Gaussian processes, like fractional and bifractional Brownian motion and also non Gaussian examples like the Hermite process. We give an application of our results to the study of the stochastic version of a common model of potential spread in a dendritic tree. Our investigation is specially motivated by possibility to introduce long-range dependence in time of the stochastic perturbation.

Stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo equations on networks with impulsive noise

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations with stochastic dynamical boundary conditions that arises in models of neurophysiology for the diffusion of electrical potentials through a finite network of neurons. Motivated by the discussion in the biological literature, we impose a general diffusion equation on each edge through a generalized version of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, while the noise acting on the boundary is described by a generalized stochastic Kirchhoff law on the nodes. In the abstract framework of matrix operators theory, we rewrite this stochastic boundary value problem as a stochastic evolution equation in infinite dimensions with a power-type nonlinearity, driven by an additive Lévy noise. We prove global well-posedness in the mild sense for such stochastic partial differential equation by monotonicity methods.

Long-time behavior of stochastically perturbed neuronal networks

Our investigation is specially motivated by the stochastic version of a common model of potential spread in a dendritic tree. We do not assume the noise in the junction points to be Markovian. In fact, we allow for long-range dependence in time of the stochastic perturbation. This leads to an abstract formulation in terms of a stochastic diffusion with dynamic boundary conditions, featuring fractional Brownian motion. We prove results on existence, uniqueness and asymptotics of weak and strong solutions to such a stochastic differential equation.

Analysis of the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo system

In this paper we study a system of stochastic differential equations with dissipative nonlinearity which arise in certain neurobiology models. Besides proving existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on the initial datum, we shall be mainly concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of the solution. We prove the existence of an invariant ergodic measure $ν$ associated with the transition semigroup $P_t$; further, we identify its infinitesimal generator in the space $L^2(H;ν)$.
