Topological and differentiable aspects of Clifford semigroups

This paper investigates the interplay between algebraic structure, topology, and differentiability in Clifford semigroups. The study is developed along three main themes. First, in the compact Hausdorff setting, we provide an explicit construction of a compatible metric for the Bowman topology. Second, we address Hilbert-fifth-type questions by establishing criteria under which the maximal subgroups are forced to be Lie groups. Finally, we prove a structural rigidity theorem: $C^1$-regularity at the idempotents implies that the idempotent semilattice is discrete.

Certified algorithms for numerical semigroups in Rocq

A numerical semigroup is a co-finite submonoid of the monoid of non-negative integers under addition. Many properties of numerical semigroups rely on some fundamental invariants, such as, among others, the set of gaps (and its cardinality), the Ap\'ery set or the Frobenius number. Algorithms for calculating invariants are currently based on computational tools, such as GAP, which lack proofs (either formal or informal) of their correctness. In this paper we introduce a Rocq formalization of numerical semigroups. Given the semigroup generators, we provide certified algorithms for computing some of the fundamental invariants: the set of gaps, of small elements, the Ap\'ery set, the multiplicity, the conductor and the Frobenius number. To the best of our knowledge this is the first formalization of numerical semigroups in any proof assistant.

Balanced residuated partially ordered semigroups

A residuated semigroup is a structure $\langle A,\le,\cdot,\backslash,/ \rangle$ where $\langle A,\le \rangle$ is a poset and $\langle A,\cdot \rangle$ is a semigroup such that the residuation law $x\cdot y\le z\iff x\le z/y\iff y\le x \backslash z$ holds. An element $p$ is positive if $a\le pa$ and $a \le ap$ for all $a$. A residuated semigroup is called balanced if it satisfies the equation $x \backslash x \approx x / x$ and moreover each element of the form $a \backslash a = a / a$ is positive, and it is called integrally closed if it satisfies the same equation and moreover each element of this form is a global identity. We show how a wide class of balanced residuated semigroups (so-called steady residuated semigroups) can be decomposed into integrally closed pieces, using a generalization of the classical Plonka sum construction. This generalization involves gluing a disjoint family of ordered algebras together using multiple families of maps, rather than a single family as in ordinary Plonka sums.

On the structure and theory of McCarthy algebras

We provide a structural analysis for McCarthy algebras, the variety generated by the three-element algebra defining the logic of McCarthy (the non-commutative version of Kleene three-valued logics). Our analysis will be conducted in a very general algebraic setting by introducing McCarthy algebras as a subvariety of unital bands (idempotent monoids) equipped with an involutive (unary) operation $'$ satisfying $x''\approx x$; herein referred to as i-ubands. Prominent (commutative) subvarieties of i-ubands include Boolean algebras, ortholattices, Kleene algebras, and involutive bisemilattices, hence i-ubands provides an algebraic common ground for several non-classical logics. Our main contributions consist in providing for McCarthy algebras: reduced and equivalent axiomatizations; a semilattice decomposition theorem; and representations as certain decorated posets from which the algebraic structure can be uniquely determined.

Bochvar algebras: A categorical equivalence and the generated variety

The proper quasivariety BCA of Bochvar algebras, which serves as the equivalent algebraic semantics of Bochvar's external logic, was introduced by Finn and Grigolia in and extensively studied in a recent work by two of these authors. In this paper, we show that the algebraic category of Bochvar algebras is equivalent to a category whose objects are pairs consisting of a Boolean algebra and a meet-subsemilattice (with unit) of the same. Furthermore, we provide an axiomatisation of the variety $V(BCA) generated by Bochvar algebras. Finally, we axiomatise the join of Boolean algebras and semilattices within the lattice of subvarieties of V(BCA).

On the structure of balanced residuated partially ordered monoids

A residuated poset is a structure $\langle A,\le,\cdot,\backslash,/,1 \rangle$ where $\langle A,\le \rangle$ is a poset and $\langle A,\cdot,1 \rangle$ is a monoid such that the residuation law $x\cdot y\le z\iff x\le z/y\iff y\le x\backslash z$ holds. A residuated poset is balanced if it satisfies the identity $x\backslash x \approx x/x$. By generalizing the well-known construction of Plonka sums, we show that a specific class of balanced residuated posets can be decomposed into such a sum indexed by the set of positive idempotent elements. Conversely, given a semilattice directed system of residuated posets equipped with two families of maps (instead of one, as in the usual case), we construct a residuated poset based on the disjoint union of their domains. We apply this approach to provide a structural description of some varieties of residuated lattices and relation algebras.

Modal weak Kleene logics: axiomatizations and relational semantics

Weak Kleene logics are three-valued logics characterized by the presence of an infectious truth-value. In their external versions, as they were originally introduced by Bochvar and Hallden, these systems are equipped with an additional connective capable of expressing whether a formula is classically true. In this paper we further expand the expressive power of external weak Kleen logics by modalizing them with a unary operator. The addition of an alethic modality gives rise to the two systems $\B^{\square}$ and $MPWK$, which have two different readings of the modal operator. We provide these logics with a complete and decidable Hilbert-style axiomatization w.r.t. a three-valued possible worlds semantics. The starting point of these calculi are new axiomatizations for the non-modal bases B and PWKe, which we provide using the recent algebraization results about these two logics. In particular, we prove the algebraizability of $\PWKe$. Finally some standard extensions of the basic modal systems are provided with their completeness results w.r.t. special classes of frames.

On the structure of Bochvar algebras

Bochvar algebras consist of the quasivariety BCA playing the role of equivalent algebraic semantics for Bochvar (external) logic, a logical formalism introduced by Bochvar in the realm of (weak) Kleene logics. In this paper, we provide an algebraic investigation of the structure of Bochvar algebras. In particular, we prove a representation theorem based on Plonka sums and investigate the lattice of subquasivarieties, showing that Bochvar (external) logic has only one proper extension (apart from classical logic), algebraized by the subquasivariety NBCA of BCA. Finally, we prove that both BCA and NBCA enjoy the Amalgamation Property (AP).

Embeddings of metric Boolean algebras in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$

A Boolean algebra $\A$ equipped with a (finitely-additive) positive probability measure $m$ can be turned into a metric space $(\A , d_{m})$, where $d_{m}(a,b)= m ((a\wedge\neg b)\vee(\neg a\wedge b))$, for any $a,b\in A$, sometimes referred to as \emph{metric Boolean algebra}. In this paper, we study under which conditions the space of atoms of a finite metric Boolean algebra can be isometrically embedded in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ (for a certain $N$) equipped with the Euclidean metric. In particular, we characterize the topology of the positive measures over a finite algebra $\A$ such that the metric space $(\mathsf{At}(\A), d_m)$ embeds isometrically in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$.

Counting finite linearly ordered involutive bisemilattices

The class of involutive bisemilattices plays the role of the algebraic counterpart of paraconsistent weak Kleene logic. Involutive bisemilattices can be represented as Plonka sums of Boolean algebras, that is semilattice direct systems of Boolean algebras. In this paper we exploit the Plonka sum representation with the aim of counting, up to isomorphism, finite involutive bisemilattices whose direct system is given by totally ordered semilattices.

Containment logics: algebraic completeness and axiomatization

The paper studies the containment companion of a logic $\vdash$. This consists of the consequence relation $\vdash^{r}$ which satisfies all the inferences of $\vdash$, where the variables of the conclusion are \emph{contained} into those of the (set of) premises. In accordance with our previous work on logics of left variable inclusion, we show that a different generalization of the Płonka sum construction, adapted from algebras to logical matrices, allows us to provide a matrix-based semantics for containment logics. In particular, we provide an appropriate completeness theorem for a wide family of containment logics, and we show how to produce a complete Hilbert style axiomatization.

Logic of left variable inclusion and Plonka sums of matrices

The paper aims at studying, in full generality, logics defined by imposing a variable inclusion condition on a given logic $\vdash$. It turns out that the algebraic counterpart of the variable inclusion companion of a given logic $\vdash$ is obtained by constructing the Plonka sum of the matrix models of $\vdash$. This association allows to obtain a Hilbert-style axiomatization of the logics of variable inclusion and to describe the structure of their reduced models.

Orthogonal relational systems

In this paper we discuss the concept of relational system with involution. This system is called orthogonal if, for every pair of non-zero orthogonal elements, there exists a supremal element in their upper cone and the upper cone of orthogonal elements $x,\,x'$ is a singleton (i.e. $x,\,x'$ are complements each other). To every orthogonal relational system can be assigned a groupoid with involution. The conditions under which a groupoid is assigned to an orthogonal relational systems are investigated. We will see that many properties of the relational system can be captured by the associated groupoid. Moreover, these structures enjoy several desirable algebraic features such as, e.g., a direct decomposition representation and the strong amalgamation property.

Representing quantum structures as near semirings

In this paper we introduce the notion of near semiring with involution. Generalizing the theory of semirings we aim at represent quantum structures, such as basic algebras and orthomodular lattices, in terms of near semirings with involution. In particular, after discussing several properties of near semirings, we introduce the so-called Łukasiewicz near semirings, as a particular case of near semirings, and we show that every basic algebra is representable as (precisely, it is term equivalent to) a near semiring. In the particular case in which a Łukasiewicz near semiring is also a semiring, we obtain as a corollary a representation of MV-algebras as semirings. Analogously, by introducing a particular subclass of Łukasiewicz near semirings, that we termed orthomodular near semirings, we obtain a representation of orthomodular lattices. In the second part of the paper, we discuss several universal algebraic properties of Łukasiewicz near semirings and we show that the variety of involutive integral near semirings is a Church variety. This yields a neat equational characterization of central elements of this variety. As a byproduct of such, we obtain several direct decomposition theorems for this class of algebras.

Residuated Relational Systems

The aim of the present paper is to generalize the concept of residuated poset, by replacing the usual partial ordering by a generic binary relation, giving rise to relational systems which are residuated. In particular, we modify the definition of adjointness in such a way that the ordering relation can be harmlessly replaced by a binary relation. By enriching such binary relation with additional properties we get interesting properties of residuated relational systems which are analogical to those of residuated posets and lattices.

Dualities for Plonka sums

Plonka sums consist of an algebraic construction similar, in some sense to direct limits, which allows to represent classes of algebras defined by means of regular identities (namely those equations where the same set of variables appears on both sides). Recently, Plonka sums have been connected to logic, as they provide algebraic semantics to logics obtained by imposing a syntactic filter to given logics. In this paper, I present a very general topological duality for classes of algebras admitting a Plonka sum representation in terms of dualisable algebras.

A duality for involutive bisemilattices

We establish a natural duality between the category of involutive bisemilattices and the category of semilattice inverse systems of Stone spaces, using Stone duality from one side and the representation of involutive bisemilattices as Płonka sum of Boolean algebras, from the other. Furthermore, we show that the dual space of an involutive bisemilattice can be viewed as a GR space with involution, a generalization of the spaces introduced by Gierz and Romanowska equipped with an involution as additional operation.
