Exact Payload-Decoupling Conditions for Pilot-Only BEM Channel Estimation With Application to OTFS

In high-mobility doubly dispersive links, basis expansion models (BEMs) reduce channel dimensionality, yet unknown payload symbols generally contaminate conventional matched-pilot channel estimates. This paper establishes the exact conditions under which such estimates become payload-independent and derives a pilot, guard, and data-placement rule that guarantees these conditions. We prove a necessary-and-sufficient zero pilot--data interference (ZPDI) condition under which the matched-pilot least-squares (LS) solution coincides with the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator for the reduced pilot statistic. When ZPDI holds, estimation requires a single precomputed projection. When it does not, the estimate contains a deterministic, channel-scaled payload bias that persists at high signal-to-noise ratio. A disjoint-support rule, independent of the selected basis, realizes ZPDI through pilot, guard, and data placement. We then specialize the framework to orthogonal time--frequency space (OTFS) and examine its structural and performance consequences. With the generalized complex-exponential BEM (GCE-BEM), the ZPDI estimator remains within about $2$~dB of the perfect channel state information benchmark in bit error rate at speeds up to 500~km/h.

Positioning with Flexible Reflectors: Solution and Performance Analysis

Flexible reflectors (FRs) have emerged as a low-cost and energy-efficient solution for reshaping electromagnetic propagation environments across a wide range of applications. This paper investigates FR-swarm-assisted target localization in scenarios where line-of-sight (LoS) paths are unavailable. By leveraging the virtual LoS paths created by the FRs, a simple yet accurate estimator is proposed for localization under severe blockage conditions. To characterize the performance limits of the proposed scheme, we derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and use it to optimize the positions and orientations of the FRs. Furthermore, by accounting for random FR deployment, we characterize the CRLB distribution and reveal how different network configurations affect localization accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that the developed scheme closely approaches the CRLB performance, while the derived analytical results provide useful guidelines for FR deployment and network design.

Optimization of CF-mMIMO Systems for the Coexistence between eMBB+ and mMTC+: From Analytical to GNN-Aided Designs

This paper investigates uplink multiple access for the coexistence of enhanced mobile broadband+ (eMBB+) and massive machine-type communications+ (mMTC+) in terminal-centric cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) systems. We propose a non-orthogonal scheme in which low-rate mMTC+ transmissions are spread across the time-frequency grid shared with eMBB+ users, enabling efficient resource reuse. In the presence of imperfect channel state information, we derive closed-form expressions for the achievable rates of both services based solely on statistical channel knowledge. For mMTC+ devices, the analysis also incorporates finite blocklength (FBL) modeling to capture short-packet transmissions. To support heterogeneous service requirements, we formulate a power-control problem that maximizes the minimum energy efficiency of mMTC+ devices subject to quality-of-service constraints on eMBB+ users. The resulting nonconvex problem is solved via sequential fractional programming, accounting for both the Shannon and FBL regimes. To enable real-time operation, we further propose a graph neural network (GNN) with multi-head attention to approximate the model-based solution. Constraint satisfaction during training is enforced via an augmented Lagrangian loss. Numerical results demonstrate effective multiplexing of the two data services and show that the proposed GNN algorithm achieves near-optimal performance with a significantly lower computational complexity.

Unsupervised Learning for Scalable Downlink Power Control in Cell-Free Massive MIMO

In cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, downlink power control is essential to ensure uniformly high service quality across users. Existing methods range from centralized iterative approaches requiring global channel knowledge and supervised training, to simpler distributed strategies such as fractional power control that rely on local information but perform poorly in terms of fairness. This letter proposes an unsupervised, physics-informed framework that directly optimizes max-min fairness without requiring optimal labels or user position information. The method is inherently scalable in the number of user equipment, does not require retraining when the user population changes, and can be extended to achieve full scalability with respect to both access points and users. Numerical results show that it nearly doubles the worst-user spectral efficiency compared to existing scalable schemes.

A Comparison Between Co-Located and Distributed MIMO Deployments in OFDM-ISAC Networks

This paper investigates network-level integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) under two fundamentally different topology configurations: cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) and multi-cell massive MIMO (MC-mMIMO). A unified OFDM-based waveform is adopted for both architectures as the key enabler for ISAC functionalities. The CF system exploits distributed access points (APs) and a scalable user-target-centric operation, whereas the MC system relies on co-located transmit-receive arrays with conventional cell-centric deployment. For both architectures, we derive a GLRT-based sensing detector and the corresponding sensing SNR expressions. We then examine a series of case studies investigating how the number of OFDM subcarriers, the transceiver allocation strategy, and the antenna/node distribution across the network affect the sensing performance. The results consistently demonstrate that CF-mMIMO provides more robust and higher sensing performance across most tested scenarios, particularly when transmit resources or antenna elements are spatially distributed. These findings highlight the inherent advantages of CF deployments for next-generation ISAC networks.

Joint Detection and Velocity Estimation in OFDM-ISAC Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks

This paper develops a sensing framework for cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) networks operating under orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). The framework explicitly incorporates the 3D bistatic Doppler geometry across distributed access points (APs) into a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector. To address system scalability, a user-target-centric AP association approach is utilized. The 3D velocity vector of the target is estimated, and several search and optimization strategies, including coarse grid search, gradient-based refinement, and particle swarm optimization (PSO), are developed and evaluated. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PSO-aided detector achieves the most favorable accuracy-complexity trade-off, while Doppler mismatch can cause substantial sensing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation in high-mobility scenarios. Additionally, leveraging more OFDM subcarriers enhances frequency-domain diversity and yields further sensing-SNR gains.

Mitigation of UE Antenna Calibration Errors via Differential STBC in Cell-Free Massive MIMO

This letter investigates the use of differential space-time block coding (DSTBC) to address antenna array calibration impairments at multi-antenna user equipment (UE) in the downlink (DL) of cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) systems. We show that, by exploiting DSTBC, reliable DL communication can be achieved without explicit UE-side calibration or channel phase knowledge. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DSTBC-based transmission effectively mitigates the impact of antenna-dependent phase offsets, restoring near-coherent performance in CF-mMIMO networks.

User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO Enhanced by Fluid-Antenna Access Points: Uplink Analysis

In this paper, we investigate cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) systems in which access points (APs) are equipped with fluid antennas (FAs) and develop a comprehensive framework for channel estimation, antenna port selection, and uplink spectral efficiency (SE) optimization. We propose a generalized LMMSE-based uplink channel estimation scheme that dynamically activates FA ports during pilot transmission, efficiently exploiting antenna reconfigurability under practical training constraints. Building on this, we design a distributed port selection strategy that minimizes per-AP channel estimation error by exploiting spatial correlation among FA ports. We systematically analyze the impact of antenna geometry and spatial correlation using the Jakes' channel model for different AP array configurations, including uniform linear and planar arrays. We then derive SINR expressions for centralized and distributed uplink processing and obtain a closed-form uplink SE expression for centralized maximum-ratio combining using the use-and-then-forget bound. Finally, we propose an alternating-optimization framework to select FA port configurations that maximize the uplink sum SE. Numerical results show that the proposed FA-aware channel estimation and port optimization strategies greatly reduce channel estimation error and significantly improve sum-SE over fixed-antenna and non-optimized FA baselines, confirming FAs as a key enabler for scalable, adaptive CF-mMIMO networks.

EMF-Compliant Power Control in Cell-Free Massive MIMO: Model-Based and Data-Driven Approaches

The impressive growth of wireless data networks has recently led to increased attention to the issue of electromagnetic pollution and the fulfillment of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure limits. This paper tackles the problem of power control in user-centric cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) systems under EMF constraints. Specifically, the power allocation maximizing the minimum data rate across users is derived for both the uplink and the downlink. To solve such optimization problems, two approaches are proposed, i.e., model-based and data-driven. The proposed model-based solutions for the downlink utilize successive convex optimization and the log-sum-exp approximation for the minimum of a discrete set, whereas ordinary techniques are employed for the uplink. With regard to data-driven solutions, solutions based on both end-to-end architectures and deep unfolding techniques are explored. Extensive numerical results confirm that the proposed model-based solutions effectively fulfill the EMF constraints while ensuring very good performance; moreover, the results show that the proposed data-driven approaches can tightly approximate the performance of model-based solutions but with much lower computational complexity.

Power Control Design for ISAC Optimization in User-Target-Centric Cell-Free mMIMO Networks

This paper addresses the power control design for a cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) system that performs integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). Specifically, the case where many access points are deployed to simultaneously communicate with mobile users and monitor the surrounding environment at the same time-frequency slot is considered. On top of the user-centric architecture used for the data services, a target-centric approach is introduced for the detection tasks. As a valuable performance metric, we derive the receive sensing signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio under generalized likelihood ratio test processing. Based on that, we formulate a quality-of-service (QoS) scheme that maximizes the two figures of merit: achievable data rate and effective sensing SNR. Simulations demonstrate that our proposal surpasses orthogonal resource algorithms, underscoring the potential of ISAC-enabled CF-mMIMO networks.

Differential Space-Time Block Coding for Phase-Unsynchronized Cell-Free MIMO Downlink

In the downlink of CF-mMIMO systems, spectral efficiency gains critically rely on joint coherent transmission, as all APs must align their transmitted signals in phase at the UE. Achieving such phase alignment is challenging, as it requires tight synchronization among geographically distributed APs. In this paper, we address this issue by introducing a DSTBC approach that bypasses the need for AP phase synchronization. We first provide analytic bounds to the achievable spectral efficiency of CF-mMIMO with phase-unsynchronized APs. Then, we propose a DSTBC-based transmission scheme tailored to CF-mMIMO, which operates without CSI and phase synchronization among the APs. We derive a closed-form expression for the resulting SINR, enabling quantitative comparisons among different DSTBC schemes. Numerical simulations confirm that phase misalignments can significantly impair system performance. In contrast, the proposed DSTBC scheme can mitigate these effects, achieving performance comparable to that of fully synchronized systems. However, when more than two APs jointly serve a UE, the code rate of DSTBC schemes can limit their SE gains. Hence, we also investigate DQO-STBC schemes that achieve full code rate by relaxing the orthogonality constraints.

Evaluating the Performance of Reconfigurable Intelligent Base Stations through Ray Tracing

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a key capacity-boosting technology in 5G wireless systems. To reduce the number of radio frequency (RF) chains needed in such systems, a novel approach has recently been introduced involving an antenna array supported by a reconfigurable intelligent surface. This arrangement, known as a reconfigurable intelligent base station (RIBS), offers performance comparable to that of a traditional mMIMO array, but with significantly fewer RF chains. Given the growing importance of precise, location-specific performance prediction, this paper evaluates the performance of an RIBS system by means of the SIONNA ray-tracing module. That performance is contrasted against results derived from a statistical 3GPP-compliant channel model, optimizing power and RIS configuration to maximize the sum spectral efficiency. Ray tracing predicts better performance than the statistical model in the evaluated scenario, suggesting the potential of site-specific modeling. However, empirical validation is needed to confirm this advantage.

Track-before-detect in RIS-aided Integrated Sensing and Communication

This study considers a base station equipped with sensing and communication capabilities, which serves a ground user and scans a portion of the sky via a passive reconfigurable intelligent surface. To achieve more favorable system tradeoffs, we utilize a multi-frame radar detector, comprising a detector, a plot-extractor, and a track-before-detect processor. The main idea proposed here is that user spectral efficiency can be enhanced by increasing the number of scans jointly processed by the multi-frame radar detector while maintaining the same sensing performance. A numerical analysis is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution and to evaluate the achievable system tradeoffs.

Joint Optimization of Uplink and Downlink Power in Full-Duplex Integrated Access and Backhaul

We examine the performance of an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node as a range extender for beyond-5G networks, focusing on the significant challenges of effective power allocation and beamforming strategies, which are vital for maximizing users' spectral efficiency (SE). We present both max-sum SE and max-min fairness power allocation strategies, to assess their effects on system performance. The results underscore the necessity of power optimization, particularly as the number of users served by the IAB node increases, demonstrating how efficient power allocation enhances service quality in high-load scenarios. The results also show that the typical line-of-sight link between the IAB donor and the IAB node has rank one, posing a limitation on the effective SEs that the IAB node can support.

Leveraging Line-of-Sight Propagation for Near-Field Beamfocusing in Cell-Free Networks

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising approach for next-generation wireless networks, enabling scalable deployments of multiple small access points (APs) to enhance coverage and service for multiple user equipments (UEs). While most existing research focuses on low-frequency bands with Rayleigh fading models, emerging 5G trends are shifting toward higher frequencies, where geometric channel models and line-of-sight (LoS) propagation become more relevant. In this work, we explore how distributed massive MIMO in the LoS regime can achieve near-field-like conditions by forming artificially large arrays through coordinated AP deployments. We investigate centralized and decentralized CF architectures, leveraging structured channel estimation (SCE) techniques that exploit the line-of-sight properties of geometric channels. Our results demonstrate that dense distributed AP deployments significantly improve system performance w.r.t. the case of a co-located array, even in highly populated UE scenarios, while SCE approaches the performance of perfect CSI.

Scalable Integrated Sensing and Communications for Multi-Target Detection and Tracking in Cell-Free Massive MIMO: A Unified Framework

This paper investigates a cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system where distributed access points (APs) perform integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) tasks, enabling simultaneous user communication and target detection/tracking. A unified framework and signal model are developed for the detection of potential targets and tracking of previously detected ones, even in arbitrary positions. Leveraging the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test technique, novel detection/tracking algorithms are proposed to handle unknown target responses and interference. Scalable AP-user and AP-target association rules are evaluated, explicitly considering multi-zone sensing scenarios. Additionally, a scalable power control mechanism extends fractional power control principles to ISAC, balancing power allocation between communication and sensing tasks. For benchmarking, a non-scalable power control optimization problem is also formulated to maximize the minimum user data rate while ensuring a Quality of Service constraint for sensing, solved via successive convex approximation. Extensive numerical results validate the proposed framework, demonstrating its effectiveness in both communication and sensing, revealing the impact of interference from other targets, and highlighting fundamental trade-offs between sensing and communication performance.

A General Framework for Scalable UE-AP Association in User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO based on Recurrent Neural Networks

This study addresses the challenge of access point (AP) and user equipment (UE) association in cell-free massive MIMO networks. It introduces a deep learning algorithm leveraging Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory cells and a hybrid probabilistic methodology for weight updating. This approach enhances scalability by adapting to variations in the number of UEs without requiring retraining. Additionally, the study presents a training methodology that improves scalability not only with respect to the number of UEs but also to the number of APs. Furthermore, a variant of the proposed AP-UE algorithm ensures robustness against pilot contamination effects, a critical issue arising from pilot reuse in channel estimation. Extensive numerical results validate the effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed methods, demonstrating their superiority over widely used heuristic alternatives.

Eliminating Phase Misalignments in Cell-Free Massive MIMO via Differential Transmission

This paper proposes two approaches for overcoming access points' phase misalignment effects in the downlink of cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) systems. The first approach is based on the differential space-time block coding technique, while the second one is based on the use of differential modulation schemes. Both approaches are shown to perform exceptionally well and to restore system performance in CF-mMIMO systems where phase alignment at the access points for downlink joint coherent transmission cannot be achieved.
