Doppler-Resilient Universal Filtered MultiCarrier (DR-UFMC): A Beyond-OTFS Modulation

In the past few years, some alternatives to the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation have been considered to improve its spectral containment and its performance level in the presence of heavy Doppler shifts. This paper examines a novel modulation, named Doppler-Resilient Universal Filtered MultiCarrier (DR-UFMC), which has the objective of combining the advantages provided by the Universal Filtered MultiCarrier (UFMC) modulation (i.e., better spectral containment), with those of the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation (i.e., better performance in time-varying environments). The paper contains the mathematical model and detailed transceiver block scheme of the newly described modulation, along with a numerical analysis contrasting DR-UFMC against OTFS, OFDM with one-tap frequency domain equalization (FDE), and OFDM with multicarrier multisymbol linear MMSE processing. Results clearly show the superiority, with respect to the cited benchmarks, of the newly proposed modulation in terms of achievable spectral efficiency. Interestingly, it is also seen that OFDM, when considered in conjunction with multicarrier multisymbol linear minimum mean squares error (MMSE) processing, performs slightly better than OTFS in terms of achievable spectral efficiency.

On the Coexistence of eMBB and URLLC in Multi-cell Massive MIMO

The non-orthogonal coexistence between the enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and the ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) in the downlink of a multi-cell massive MIMO system is rigorously analyzed in this work. We provide a unified information-theoretic framework blending an infinite-blocklength analysis of the eMBB spectral efficiency (SE) in the ergodic regime with a finite-blocklength analysis of the URLLC error probability relying on the use of mismatched decoding, and of the so-called saddlepoint approximation. Puncturing (PUNC) and superposition coding (SPC) are considered as alternative downlink coexistence strategies to deal with the inter-service interference, under the assumption of only statistical channel state information (CSI) knowledge at the users. eMBB and URLLC performances are then evaluated over different precoding techniques and power control schemes, by accounting for imperfect CSI knowledge at the base stations, pilot-based estimation overhead, pilot contamination, spatially correlated channels, the structure of the radio frame, and the characteristics of the URLLC activation pattern. Simulation results reveal that SPC is, in many operating regimes, superior to PUNC in providing higher SE for the eMBB yet achieving the target reliability for the URLLC with high probability. Moreover, PUNC might cause eMBB service outage in presence of high URLLC traffic loads. However, PUNC turns to be necessary to preserve the URLLC performance in scenarios where the multi-user interference cannot be satisfactorily alleviated.

Power Control in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks for UAVs URLLC under the Finite Blocklength Regime

In this paper, we employ a user-centric (UC) cell-free massive MIMO (CFmMIMO) network for providing ultra reliable low latency communication (URLLC) when traditional ground users (GUs) coexist with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). We study power control in both the downlink and the uplink when partial zero-forcing (PZF) transmit/receive beamforming and maximum ratio transmission/combining are utilized. We consider optimization problems where the objective is to maximize either the users' sum URLLC rate or the minimum user's URLLC rate. The URLLC rate function is both complicated and nonconvex rendering the considered optimization problems nonconvex. Thus, we propose two approximations for the complicated URLLC rate function and employ successive convex optimization (SCO) to tackle the considered optimization problems. Specifically, we propose the SCO with iterative concave lower bound approximation (SCO-ICBA) and the SCO with iterative interference approximation (SCO-IIA). We provide extensive simulations to evaluate SCO-ICBA and SCO-IIA and compare UC CFmMIMO deployment with traditional colocated massive MIMO (COmMIMO) systems. The obtained results reveal that employing the SCO-IIA scheme to optimize the minimum user's rate for CFmMIMO with MRT in the downlink, and PZF reception in the uplink can provide the best URLLC rate performances.

Integrated Sensing and Communications with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) are envisioned to be an integral part of future wireless networks, especially when operating at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) frequency bands. However, establishing wireless connections at these high frequencies is quite challenging, mainly due to the penetrating pathloss that prevents reliable communication and sensing. Another emerging technology for next-generation wireless systems is reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are capable of modifying harsh propagation environments. RISs are the focus of growing research and industrial attention, bringing forth the vision of smart and programmable signal propagation environments. In this article, we provide a tutorial-style overview of the applications and benefits of RISs for sensing functionalities in general, and for ISAC systems in particular. We highlight the potential advantages when fusing these two emerging technologies, and identify for the first time that: i) joint sensing and communications designs are most beneficial when the channels referring to these operations are coupled, and that ii) RISs offer means for controlling this beneficial coupling. The usefulness of RIS-aided ISAC goes beyond the individual obvious gains of each of these technologies in both performance and power efficiency. We also discuss the main signal processing challenges and future research directions which arise from the fusion of these two emerging technologies.

Spatial Diversity in Radar Detection via Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are a novel and promising technology that allows controlling the radio propagation environment while compensating for the product path loss along the RIS-assisted path. In this letter, we consider the classical radar detection problem and propose to use an active RIS to get a second independent look at a prospective target illuminated by the radar transmitter. At the design stage, we select the power emitted by the radar, the number of RIS elements, and their amplification factor in order to maximize the detection probability for a fixed probability of false alarm and a common (among radar and RIS) power budget. An illustrative example is provided to assess the achievable detection performance, also in comparison with that of a radar operating alone or with the help of a passive RIS.

Multi-UE Multi-AP Beam Alignment in User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems Operating at mmWave

This paper considers the problem of beam alignment in a cell-free massive MIMO deployment with multiple access points (APs) and multiple user equipments (UEs) simultaneously operating in the same millimeter wave frequency band. Assuming the availability of a control channel at sub-6 GHz frequencies, a protocol is developed that permits estimating, for each UE, the strongest propagation path from each of the surrounding APs, and to perform user-centric association between the UEs and the APs. Estimation of the strongest paths from nearby APs is realized at the UE in a one-phase procedure, during which all the APs simultaneously transmit on pseudo-randomly selected channels with pseudo-random transmit beamformers. An algorithm for orthogonal channels assignment to the APs is also proposed, with the aim of minimizing the mutual interference between APs that transmit on the same channels. The performance of the proposed strategy is evaluated both in terms of probability of correct detection of the directions of arrival and of departure associated to the strongest beam from nearby APs, and in terms of downlink and uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Numerical results show that the proposed approach is effective and capable of efficiently realizing beam alignment in a multi-UE multi-AP wireless scenario.

Coexistence of D2D Communications and Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems With Low Resolution ADC for Improved Throughput in Beyond-5G Networks

In this paper, uplink transmission of a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) system coexisting with device-to-device (D2D) communication links is investigated, under the assumption that access points (APs) are equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Lower bounds of achievable rates for both D2D users (DUEs) and CF-mMIMO users (CFUEs) are derived in closed-form, with perfect and imperfect channel state information. Next, in order to reduce pilot contamination, greedy and graph coloring-based pilot allocation algorithms are proposed and analyzed for the considered scenario. Furthermore, to control interference and improve the performance, two power control strategies are designed and their complexity and convergence are also discussed. The first power control strategy aims at maximizing CFUEs' sum spectral efficiency (SE) subject to quality of service constraints on DUEs, while the second one maximizes the weighted product of CFUEs' and DUEs' signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratios (SINRs). Numerical results show that the proposed pilot and power allocations bring a considerable improvement to the network SE. Also, it is revealed that the activation of D2D links has a positive effect on the system throughput, i.e. the network offloading ensured by the D2D links overcomes the increased interference brought by D2D communications.

The Promising Marriage of Mobile Edge Computing and Cell-Free Massive MIMO

This paper considers a mobile edge computing-enabled cell-free massive MIMO wireless network. An optimization problem for the joint allocation of uplink powers and remote computational resources is formulated, aimed at minimizing the total uplink power consumption under latency constraints, while simultaneously also maximizing the minimum SE throughout the network. Since the considered problem is non-convex, an iterative algorithm based on sequential convex programming is devised. A detailed performance comparison between the proposed distributed architecture and its co-located counterpart, based on a multi-cell massive MIMO deployment, is provided. Numerical results reveal the natural suitability of cell-free massive MIMO in supporting computation-offloading applications, with benefits over users' transmit power and energy consumption, the offloading latency experienced, and the total amount of allocated remote computational resources.

Conjugate Beamforming with Fractional-Exponent Normalization and Scalable Power Control in Cell-Free Massive MIMO

This paper considers a cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) system using conjugate beamforming (CB) with fractional-exponent normalization. Assuming independent Rayleigh fading channels, a generalized closed-form expression for the achievable downlink spectral efficiency is derived, which subsumes, as special cases, the spectral efficiency expressions previously reported for plain CB and its variants, i.e. normalized CB and enhanced CB. Downlink power control is also tackled, and a reduced-complexity power allocation strategy is proposed, wherein only one coefficient for access point (AP) is optimized based on the long-term fading realizations. Numerical results unveil the performance of CF-mMIMO with CB and fractional-exponent normalization, and show that the proposed power optimization rule incurs a moderate performance loss with respect to the traditional max-min power control rule, but with lower complexity and much smaller overall power consumption.

Foundations of MIMO Radar Detection Aided by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a nearly-passive flat layer made of inexpensive elements that can add a tunable phase shift to the impinging electromagnetic wave and are controlled by a low-power electronic circuit. This paper considers the fundamental problem of target detection in a RIS-aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. At first, a general signal model is introduced, which includes the possibility of using up to two RISs (one close to the radar transmitter and one close to the radar receiver) and subsumes both a monostatic and a bistatic radar configuration with or without a line-of-sight view of the prospective target. Upon resorting to a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), the design of the phase shifts introduced by the RIS elements is formulated as the maximization of the probability of detection in the location under inspection for a fixed probability of false alarm, and suitable optimization algorithms are proposed. The performance analysis shows the benefits granted by the presence of the RISs and shed light on the interplay among the key system parameters, such as the radar-RIS distance, the RIS size, and location of the prospective target. A major finding is that the RISs should be better deployed in the near-field of the radar arrays at both the transmit and the receive side. The paper is concluded by discussing some open problems and foreseen applications.

RIS-aided Massive MIMO: Achieving Large Multiplexing Gains with non-Large Arrays

This paper considers an antenna structure where a (non-large) array of radiating elements is placed at short distance in front of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We propose a channel estimation procedure using different configurations of the RIS elements and derive a closed-form expression for an achievable downlink spectral efficiency by using the popular hardening lower-bound. Next, we formulate an optimization problem, with respect to the phase shifts of the RIS, aimed at minimizing the channels cross-correlations while preserving the channels individual norms. The numerical analysis shows that the proposed structure is capable of overcoming the performance of a conventional massive MIMO system without the RIS.

Deep Learning-Based Power Control for Uplink Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, a general framework for deep learning-based power control methods for max-min, max-product and max-sum-rate optimization in uplink cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) systems is proposed. Instead of using supervised learning, the proposed method relies on unsupervised learning, in which optimal power allocations are not required to be known, and thus has low training complexity. More specifically, a deep neural network (DNN) is trained to learn the map between fading coefficients and power coefficients within short time and with low computational complexity. It is interesting to note that the spectral efficiency of CF mMIMO systems with the proposed method outperforms previous optimization methods for max-min optimization and fits well for both max-sum-rate and max-product optimizations.

Integrated Sensing and Communications: Towards Dual-functional Wireless Networks for 6G and Beyond

As the standardization of 5G is being solidified, researchers are speculating what 6G will be. Integrating sensing functionality is emerging as a key feature of the 6G Radio Access Network (RAN), allowing to exploit the dense cell infrastructure of 5G for constructing a perceptive network. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview on the background, range of key applications and state-of-the-art approaches of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC). We commence by discussing the interplay between sensing and communications (S&C) from a historical point of view, and then consider multiple facets of ISAC and its performance gains. By introducing both ongoing and potential use cases, we shed light on industrial progress and standardization activities related to ISAC. We analyze a number of performance tradeoffs between S&C, spanning from information theoretical limits, tradeoffs in physical layer performance, to the tradeoff in cross-layer designs. Next, we discuss signal processing aspects of ISAC, namely ISAC waveform design and receive signal processing. As a step further, we provide our vision on the deeper integration between S&C within the framework of perceptive networks, where the two functionalities are expected to mutually assist each other, i.e., communication-assisted sensing and sensing-assisted communications. Finally, we summarize the paper by identifying the potential integration between ISAC and other emerging communication technologies, and their positive impact on the future of wireless networks.

Optimal Joint Beamforming and Power Control in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Downlink

In this paper, a novel optimization model for joint beamforming and power control in the downlink (DL) of a cell-free massive MIMO (CFmMIMO) system is presented. The objective of the proposed optimization model is to minimize the maximum user interference while satisfying quality of service (QoS) constraints and power consumption limits. The proposed min-max optimization model is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear program, that is directly tractable. Numerical results show that the proposed joint beamforming and power control scheme is effective and outperforms competing schemes in terms of data rate, power consumption, and energy efficiency.

Beam Alignment in mmWave User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

The problem of beam alignment (BA) in a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) system operating at millimeter wave (mmWaves) carrier frequencies is considered in this paper. Two estimation algorithms are proposed, in association with a protocol that permits simultaneous estimation, on a shared set of frequencies, for each user equipment (UE), of the direction of arrival and departure of the radio waves associated to the strongest propagation paths from each of the surrounding access points (APs), so that UE-AP association can take place. The proposed procedure relies on the existence of a reliable control channel at sub-6 GHz frequency, so as to enable exchange of estimated values between the UEs and the network, and assumes that APs can be identifies based on the prior knowledge of the orthogonal channels and transmit beamforming codebook. A strategy for assigning codebook entries to the several APs is also proposed, with the aim of minimizing the mutual interference between APs that are assigned the same entry. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed detection strategy, thus enabling one shot fast BA for CF-mMIMO systems.

Radar Target Detection aided by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

In this work, we consider the target detection problem in a sensing architecture where the radar is aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), that can be modeled as an array of sub-wavelength small reflective elements capable of imposing a tunable phase shift to the impinging waves and, ultimately, of providing the radar with an additional echo of the target. A theoretical analysis is carried out for closely- and widely-spaced (with respect to the target) radar and RIS and for different beampattern configurations, and some examples are provided to show that large gains can be achieved by the considered detection architecture.

User-centric Handover in mmWave Cell-Free Massive MIMO with User Mobility

The coupling between cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) carrier frequencies and user mobility is considered in this paper. First of all, a mmWave channel is introduced taking into account the user mobility and the impact of the channel aging. Then, three beamforming techniques are proposed in the considered scenario, along with a dynamic user association technique (handover): starting from a user-centric association between each mobile device and a cluster of access points (APs), a rule for updating the APs cluster is formulated and analyzed. Numerical results reveal that the proposed beamforming and user association techniques are effective in the considered scenario.

RIS Configuration, Beamformer Design, and Power Control in Single-Cell and Multi-Cell Wireless Networks

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are recently attracting a wide interest due to their capability of tuning wireless propagation environments in order to increase the system performance of wireless networks. In this paper, a multiuser wireless network assisted by a RIS is studied and resource allocation algorithms are presented for several scenarios. First of all, the problem of channel estimation is considered, and an algorithm that permits separate estimation of the mobile user-to-RIS and RIS-to-base stations components is proposed. Then, for the special case of a single-user system, three possible approaches are shown in order to optimize the Signal-to-Noise Ratio with respect to the beamformer used at the base station and to the RIS phase shifts. Next, for a multiuser system with two cells, assuming channel-matched beamforming, the geometric mean of the downlink Signal-to-Interference plus Noise Ratios across users is maximized with respect to the base stations transmit powers and RIS phase shifts configurations. In this scenario, the RIS is placed at the cell-edge and some users are jointly served by two base stations to increase the system performance. Numerical results show that the proposed procedures are effective and that the RIS brings substantial performance improvements to wireless system.
