Transverse-momentum resummation effects on angular coefficients in Z and W boson hadroproduction

We present a comprehensive analysis of the angular coefficients of $Z$ and $W$ boson production at hadron colliders in different kinematical ranges, using data from the ATLAS, LHCb, and CMS Collaborations at the LHC, as well as CDF data at the Tevatron. We provide theoretical predictions obtained by consistently combining the resummation of logarithmically enhanced QCD corrections at small transverse momenta $q_T$ up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (NNLL) with fixed-order calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO), valid at large $q_T$. We quantify the impact of transverse-momentum resummation on the angular coefficients. We find that the inclusion of resummation effects leads to a moderate and systematic improvement in the description of the data in the intermediate $q_T$ region, $q_T \sim 20-50$~GeV, for several angular coefficients, while in the remaining cases it does not degrade the agreement of fixed-order QCD predictions with experimental measurements.

Drell--Yan lepton pair production at low invariant masses: transverse-momentum resummation and non-perturbative effects in QCD

We consider the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution of Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced with invariant masses ($M$) from low values up to the $Z$-boson peak ($4\leq M \leq 116$~GeV). We present perturbative predictions obtained by consistently combining the resummation of logarithmically enhanced QCD corrections at small $q_T$ ($q_T \ll M$) up to next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy with the available fixed-order calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(α_S^3)$) valid at large $q_T$. For very low $q_T$ ($q_T\sim Λ_{\mathrm{QCD}}$), non-perturbative (NP) QCD effects become dominant and have been included through a NP form factor with a small number of free-parameters. We compare our results with multiple experimental datasets from hadron colliders, finding excellent agreement between theory and data. By fitting the NP parameters, we achieve a precise extraction of the NP form factor and the so-called Collins-Soper kernel.

Transverse-momentum resummation at mixed QCD$\otimes$QED NNLL accuracy for Z boson production at hadron colliders

We consider the transverse momentum ($q_T$) distribution of neutral charged bosons at hadron colliders. We perform the resummation of the logarithmically-enhanced effects due to simultaneous QCD and QED initial-state radiation, up to mixed next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We study the impact of such mixed QCD$\otimes$QED resummed contributions on top of pure QCD corrections, finding percent-level effects.

Determination of the strong-coupling constant from the $Z$-boson transverse-momentum distribution

The strong-coupling constant is determined from the low-momentum region of the transverse-momentum distribution of $Z$ bosons produced through the Drell-Yan process, using predictions at third order in perturbative QCD. The analysis employs a measurement performed in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV with the CDF experiment. The determined value of the strong coupling at the reference scale corresponding to the $Z$-boson mass is $α_S(m_Z) = 0.1191^{+0.0013}_{-0.0016}$.

Drell-Yan lepton-pair production: $q_T$ resummation at approximate N$^4$LL+N$^4$LO accuracy

We consider Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced in hadronic collisions. We present high-accuracy QCD predictions for the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution and fiducial cross sections in the small $q_T$ region. We resum to all perturbative orders the logarithmically enhanced contributions up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^4$LL) accuracy and we include the hard-virtual coefficient at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(α_S^3)$) with an approximation of the N$^4$LO coefficients. The massive axial-vector and vector contributions up to three loops have also been consistently included. The resummed partonic cross section is convoluted with approximate N$^3$LO parton distribution functions. We show numerical results at LHC energies of resummed $q_T$ distributions for $Z/γ^*, W^\pm$ production and decay, including the $W^\pm$ and $Z/γ^*$ ratio, estimating the corresponding uncertainties from missing higher orders corrections and from incomplete or missing perturbative information coefficients at N$^4$LL and N$^4$LO. Our resummed calculation has been encoded in the public numerical program DYTurbo.

Drell-Yan cross-sections with fiducial cuts: impact of linear power corrections and $q_T$-resummation in PDF determination

Measurement at Hadron colliders of neutral- and charged-current Drell-Yan production provide essential constraints in the determination of parton distribution functions. Experimentally, they have reached percent level precision, challenging the accuracy of the theoretical predictions. In this work we benchmark the novel implementation in $\texttt{DYTurbo}$ of linear fiducial power corrections in the $q_T$-subtraction formalism at NLO and NNLO in QCD. We illustrate how the inclusion of linear fiducial power corrections impacts predictions for precise $W$ and $Z$ measurements from the LHC and affects their description by modern global parton distribution functions. The further inclusion of $q_T$-resummation corrections in the theoretical predictions leads to a better modelling of the lepton $p_T$ distribution and we study how this improve the description of the data.

Higgs boson production at the LHC: fast and precise predictions in QCD at higher orders

We present a new numerical program, HTurbo, which provides fast and numerically precise predictions for Higgs boson production cross sections. The present version of the code implements the perturbative QCD expansion up to the next-to-next-to-leading order also combined with the resummation of the large logarithmic corrections at small transverse momenta up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and it includes the Higgs boson production through gluon fusion and decay in two photons with the full dependence on the final-state kinematics. Arbitrary kinematical cuts can be applied to the final states in order to obtain fiducial cross sections and associated kinematical distributions. We present a benchmark comparison with the predictions obtained with the numerical programs HRes and HNNLO programs for which HTurbo represents an improved reimplementation.

Drell-Yan lepton-pair production: $q_T$ resummation at N$^3$LL accuracy and fiducial cross sections at N$^3$LO

We present high-accuracy QCD predictions for the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution and fiducial cross sections of Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced in hadronic collisions. At small value of $q_T$ we resum to all perturbative orders the logarithmically enhanced contributions up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy, including all the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(α_S^3)$) terms. Our resummed calculation has been implemented in the public numerical program DYTurbo, which produces fast and precise predictions with the full dependence on the final-state leptons kinematics. We consistently combine our resummed results with the known $\mathcal{O}(α_S^3)$ fixed-order predictions at large values of $q_T$ thus obtaining full N$^3$LO accuracy also for fiducial cross sections. We show numerical results at LHC energies discussing the reduction of the perturbative uncertainty with respect to lower-order calculations.

Fiducial perturbative power corrections within the q$_{\bf T}$ subtraction formalism

We consider higher-order QCD corrections to the production of high-mass systems in hadron collisions within the transverse-momentum (q$_{\rm T}$) subtraction formalism. We present a method to consistently remove the linear power corrections in q$_{\rm T}$ which appears when fiducial kinematical cuts are applied on the final state system. We consider explicitly the case of fiducial cross sections for Drell-Yan lepton pair production at the Large Hadron Collider up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD. We have implemented our method within the DYTurbo numerical program and we have obtained perturbative predictions which are in agreement at the per mille level with those obtained with local subtraction formalisms up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). At the N3LO we are able to provide predictions for fiducial cross sections with numerical accuracy at the per mille level.

DYTurbo: Fast predictions for Drell-Yan processes

Drell-Yan lepton pair production processes are extremely important for Standard Model (SM) precision tests and for beyond the SM searches at hadron colliders. Fast and accurate predictions are essential to enable the best use of the precision measurements of these processes; they are used for parton density fits, for the extraction of fundamental parameters of the SM, and for the estimation of background processes in searches. This paper describes a new numerical program, DYTurbo, for the calculation of the QCD transverse-momentum resummation of Drell-Yan cross sections up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy combined with the fixed-order results at next-to-next-to-leading order ($\mathcal{O}(α_{\mathrm{S}}^2)$), including the full kinematical dependence of the decaying lepton pair with the corresponding spin correlations and the finite-width effects. The DYTurbo program is an improved reimplementation of the DYqT, DYqT and DYNNLO programs, which provides fast and numerically precise predictions through the factorisation of the cross section into production and decay variables, and the usage of quadrature rules based on interpolating functions for the integration over kinematic variables.

Probing the strange content of the proton with charm production in charged current at LHeC

We study charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the xFitter framework. Recent results from the LHC have focused renewed attention on the determination of the strange-quark parton distribution function (PDF) and the DIS charm process provides important complementary constraints on this quantity. We examine the current PDF uncertainty, and use LHeC pseudodata to estimate the potential improvement from this proposed facility. As xFitter implements both fixed-flavor- and variable-flavor-number schemes, we can compare the impact of these different theoretical choices; this highlights some interesting aspects of multi-scale calculations. We find that the high-statistics LHeC data covering a wide kinematic range could substantially reduce the strange PDF uncertainty.

Recent QCD results from the xFitter project: Probing the strange content of the proton with charm production in charged current at LHeC

We investigate charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the xFitter program. xFitter is an open-source software framework for the determination of PDFs and the analysis of QCD physics, and has been used for a variety of LHC studies. The study of charged current DIS charm production provides an important perspective on the strange quark PDF, s(x). We make use of the xFitter tools to study the present s(x) constraints, and then use LHeC pseudodata to infer how these might improve. Furthermore, as xFitter implements both Fixed Flavor and Variable Flavor number schemes, we can examine the impact of these different theoretical choices; this highlights some interesting aspects of multi-scale calculations. This study provides a practical illustration of the many features of xFitter.

Impact of low-$x$ resummation on QCD analysis of HERA data

Fits to the final combined HERA deep-inelastic scattering cross-section data within the conventional DGLAP framework of QCD have shown some tension at low $x$ and low $Q^2$. A resolution of this tension incorporating $\ln(1/x)$-resummation terms into the HERAPDF fits is investigated using the xFitter program. The kinematic region where this resummation is important is delineated. Such high-energy resummation not only gives a better description of the data, particularly of the longitudinal structure function $F_L$, it also results in a gluon PDF which is steeply rising at low $x$ for low scales, $Q^2 \simeq 2.5$ GeV$^2$, contrary to the fixed-order NLO and NNLO gluon PDF.

Determination of the muonic branching ratio of the W boson and its total width via cross-section measurements at the Tevatron and LHC

The total $W$-boson decay width $Γ_W$ is an important observable which allows testing of the standard model. The current world average value is based on direct measurements of final state kinematic properties of $W$-boson decays, and has a relative uncertainty of 2%. The indirect determination of $Γ_W$ via the cross-section measurements of vector-boson production can lead to a similar accuracy. The same methodology leads also to a determination of the leptonic branching ratio. This approach has been successfully pursued by the CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron collider, as well as by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. In this paper we present for the first time a combination of the available measurements at hadron colliders, accounting for the correlations of the associated systematic uncertainties. Our combination leads to values of $\textrm{BR}(W\rightarrowμν)=(10.72 \pm 0.16)\%$ and $Γ_W = 2113 \pm 31$ MeV, respectively, both compatible with the current world averages.

A determination of mc(mc) from HERA data using a matched heavy-flavor scheme

The charm quark mass is one of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model Lagrangian. In this work we present a determination of the MSbar charm mass from a fit to the inclusive and charm HERA deep-inelastic structure function data. The analysis is performed within the xFitter framework, with structure functions computed in the FONLL general-mass scheme as implemented in APFEL. In the case of the FONLL-C scheme, we obtain mc(mc) = 1.335 +- 0.043(exp) +0.019 -0.000(param) +0.011 -0.008(mod) +0.033 -0.008(th) GeV. We also perform an analogous determination in the fixed-flavor-number scheme at next-to-leading order, finding mc(mc) = 1.318 +- 0.054(exp) +0.011 -0.010(param) +0.015 -0.019(mod) +0.045 -0.004(th) GeV, compatible with the FONLL-C value. Our results are consistent with previous determinations from DIS data as well as with the PDG world average.

HERAFitter - An Open Source framework to determine PDFs

The HERAFitter project provides a framework for the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs), and tools for assessing the impact of new data on PDFs. In this contribution, HERAFitter is used for a QCD analysis of the legacy measurements of the $W$-boson charge asymmetry and of the $Z$-boson production cross sections, performed at the Tevatron collider in Run II by the D0 and CDF collaborations. The Tevatron measurements are included in a PDF fit performed at next-to-leading order, and compared to the predictions obtained using other PDF sets from different groups. The measurements are in good agreement with NLO QCD theoretical predictions. The Tevatron data provide significant constraints on the $d$-valence quark distribution.

Leptonic asymmetry in ttbar production at CDF

The leptonic asymmetry in semileptonic ttbar decays is measured with the CDF detector using the full Tevatron Run II dataset, which corresponds to 9.4 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. The measured asymmetry is extrapolated to the full kinematic range and the measured value of A_FB^lep = 0.094^+0.032_-0.029 is compared to the NLO prediction A_FB^lep = 0.038 +/- 0.003.

W/Z+Jets and W/Z+HF Production at the Tevatron

The CDF and D0 collaborations performed a comprehensive study of the production of vector bosons, W and Z, in association with energetic jets. Understanding the W/Z + jets and W/Z + c, b-jets processes is of paramount importance for the top quark physics, for the Higgs boson measurements, and for many new physics searches. In this contribution the most recent measurements of the associated production of jets and vector bosons in Run II at the Tevatron are presented. The measurements are compared to different perturbative QCD predictions and to several Monte Carlo generators.
