Parton Distributions and Event Generators

We present the implementation within the Pythia8 event generator of a set of parton distributions based on NNPDF methodology. We construct a set of leading-order parton distributions with QED corrections, NNPDF2.3QED LO set, based on the same data as the previous NNPDF2.3 NLO and NNLO PDF sets. We compare this PDF set to its higher-order counterparts, we discuss its implementation as an internal set in Pythia8, and we use it to study some of the phenomenological implications of photon-initiated contributions for dilepton production at hadron colliders.

Parton distributions with QED corrections

We present a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs), based on the NNPDF2.3 set, which includes a photon PDF, and QED contributions to parton evolution. We describe the implementation of the combined QCD+QED evolution in the NNPDF framework. We then provide a first determination of the full set of PDFs based on deep-inelastic scattering data and LHC data for W and Z/gamma* Drell-Yan production, using leading-order QED and NLO or NNLO QCD. We compare the ensuing NNPDF2.3QED PDF set to the older MRST2004QED set. We perform a preliminary investigation of the phenomenological implications of NNPDF2.3QED: specifically, photon-induced corrections to direct photon production at HERA, and high-mass dilepton and W pair production at the LHC.

Towards an unbiased determination of parton distributions with QED corrections

Electroweak corrections to hadron collider processes become relevant at the level of precision reached by present-day LHC experiments. We provide a preliminary discussion of the impact of electroweak corrections to parton distributions, concentrating on electrodynamics corrections to parton evolution equations, and showing a preliminary assessment of their impact. Furthermore, we determine the parton distribution function of the photon from deep inelastic scattering data using the NNPDF methodology.

Towards the determination of the photon parton distribution function constrained by LHC data

We provide a discussion of the impact of a subset of Drell-Yan data from LHC on the determination of the photon parton distribution function (PDF), using the NNPDF methodology. In previous work we have shown that the photon PDF determined from deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) data only has large uncertainties, suggesting the need for more data from other processes such as Drell-Yan, which unlike DIS, includes photon-induced contributions at leading order in QED. We describe the inclusion of ATLAS Drell-Yan W, Z data, which is a subset of the LHC data used in a final photon PDF determination, by means of a reweighting procedure. We show the impact of such data by comparing the reweighted photon PDF with the photon PDF from DIS, highlighting the reduction of uncertainties at medium/small-x. We conclude that the Drell-Yan data from LHC allows a reasonably accurate determination of the photon PDF.

Parton Distribution Benchmarking with LHC Data

We present a detailed comparison of the most recent sets of NNLO PDFs from the ABM, CT, HERAPDF, MSTW and NNPDF collaborations. We compare parton distributions at low and high scales and parton luminosities relevant for LHC phenomenology. We study the PDF dependence of LHC benchmark inclusive cross sections and differential distributions for electroweak boson and jet production in the cases in which the experimental covariance matrix is available. We quantify the agreement between data and theory by computing the chi2 for each data set with all the various PDFs. PDF comparisons are performed consistently for common values of the strong coupling. We also present a benchmark comparison of jet production at the LHC, comparing the results from various available codes and scale settings. Finally, we discuss the implications of the updated NNLO PDF sets for the combined PDF+alphaS uncertainty in the gluon fusion Higgs production cross section.

Parton distributions with LHC data

We present the first determination of parton distributions of the nucleon at NLO and NNLO based on a global data set which includes LHC data: NNPDF2.3. Our data set includes, besides the deep inelastic, Drell-Yan, gauge boson production and jet data already used in previous global PDF determinations, all the relevant LHC data for which experimental systematic uncertainties are currently available: ATLAS and LHCb W and Z lepton rapidity distributions from the 2010 run, CMS W electron asymmetry data from the 2011 run, and ATLAS inclusive jet cross-sections from the 2010 run. We introduce an improved implementation of the FastKernel method which allows us to fit to this extended data set, and also to adopt a more effective minimization methodology. We present the NNPDF2.3 PDF sets, and compare them to the NNPDF2.1 sets to assess the impact of the LHC data. We find that all the LHC data are broadly consistent with each other and with all the older data sets included in the fit. We present predictions for various standard candle cross-sections, and compare them to those obtained previously using NNPDF2.1, and specifically discuss the impact of ATLAS electroweak data on the determination of the strangeness fraction of the proton. We also present collider PDF sets, constructed using only data from HERA, Tevatron and LHC, but find that this data set is neither precise nor complete enough for a competitive PDF determination.
