Quaternionic bound states

We study the bound-state solutions of vanishing angular momentum in a quaternionic spherical square-well potential of finite depth. As in the standard quantum mechanics, such solutions occur for discrete values of energies. At first glance, it seems that the continuity conditions impose a very restrictive constraint on the energy eigenvalues and, consequently, no bound states was expected for energy values below the pure quaternionic potential. Nevertheless, a careful analysis shows that pure quaternionic potentials do not remove bound states. It is also interesting to compare these new solutions with the bound state solutions of the trial-complex potential. The study presented in this paper represents a preliminary step towards a full understanding of the role that quaternionic potentials could play in quantum mechanics. Of particular interest for the authors it is the analysis of confined wave packets and tunnelling times in this new formulation of quantum theory.

Dirac Spinors and Flavor Oscillations

In the standard treatment of particle oscillations the mass eigenstates are implicitly assumed to be scalars and, consequently, the spinorial form of neutrino wave functions is not included in the calculations. To analyze this additional effect, we discuss the oscillation probability formula obtained by using the Dirac equation as evolution equation for the neutrino mass eigenstates. The initial localization of the spinor state also implies an interference between positive and negative energy components of mass eigenstate wave packets which modifies the standard oscillation probability.

An Analytic Approach to the Wave Packet Formalism in Oscillation Phenomena

We introduce an approximation scheme to perform an analytic study of the oscillation phenomena in a pedagogical and comprehensive way. By using Gaussian wave packets, we show that the oscillation is bounded by a time-dependent vanishing function which characterizes the slippage between the mass-eigenstate wave packets. We also demonstrate that the wave packet spreading represents a secondary effect which plays a significant role only in the non-relativistic limit. In our analysis, we note the presence of a new time-dependent phase and calculate how this additional term modifies the oscillating character of the flavor conversion formula. Finally, by considering Box and Sine wave packets we study how the choice of different functions to describe the particle localization changes the oscillation probability.

Tunnelling Through Two Barriers

Recent studies of the tunnelling through two opaque barriers claim that the transit time is independent of the barrier widths and of the separation distance between the barriers. We observe, in contrast, that if multiple reflections are allowed for correctly (infinite peaks) the transit time between the barriers appears exactly as expected.

Real linear quaternionic operators

In a recent paper [J.Math.Phys. vol42, 2236-2265 (2001)], we discussed differential operators within a quaternionic formulation of quantum mechanics. In particular, we proposed a practical method to solve quaternionic and complex linear second order differential equations with constant coefficients. In this paper, we extend our discussion to real linear quaternionic differential equations. The method of resolution is based on the Jordan canonical form of quaternionic matrices associoated to real linear differential operators.

Quaternionic Lorentz group and Dirac equation

We formulate Lorentz group representations in which ordinary complex numbers are replaced by linear functions of real quaternions and introduce dotted and undotted quaternionic one-dimensional spinors. To extend to parity the space-time transformations, we combine these one-dimensional spinors into bi-dimensional column vectors. From the transformation properties of the two-component spinors, we derive a quaternionic chiral representation for the space-time algebra. Finally, we obtain a quaternionic bi-dimensional version of the Dirac equation.

The quaternionic determinat

The determinant for complex matrices cannot be extended to quaternionic matrices. Instead, the Study determinant and the closely related $q$-determinant are widely used. We show that the Study determinant can be characterized as the unique functional which extends the {\em absolute value} of the complex determinant and discuss its spectral and linear algebraic aspects.

Right eigenvalue equation in quaternionic quantum mechanics

We study the right eigenvalue equation for quaternionic and complex linear matrix operators defined in n-dimensional quaternionic vector spaces. For quaternionic linear operators the eigenvalue spectrum consists of n complex values. For these operators we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the diagonalization of their quaternionic matrix representations. Our discussion is also extended to complex linear operators, whose spectrum is characterized by 2n complex eigenvalues. We show that a consistent analysis of the eigenvalue problem for complex linear operators requires the choice of a complex geometry in defining inner products. Finally, we introduce some examples of the left eigenvalue equations and highlight the main difficulties in their solution.

Remarks upon the mass oscillation formulas

The standard formula for mass oscillations is often based upon the approximation $t \approx L$ and the hypotheses that neutrinos have been produced with a definite momentum $p$ or, alternatively, with definite energy $E$. This represents an inconsistent scenario and gives an unjustified reduction by a factor of two in the mass oscillation formulas. Such an ambiguity has been a matter of speculations and mistakes in discussing flavour oscillations. We present a series of results and show how the problem of the factor two in the oscillation length is not a consequence of gedanken experiments, i.e. oscillations in time. The common velocity scenario yields the maximum simplicity.

Quaternionic Electron Theory: Dirac's Equation

We perform a one-dimensional complexified quaternionic version of the Dirac equation based on $i$-complex geometry. The problem of the missing complex parameters in Quaternionic Quantum Mechanics with $i$-complex geometry is overcome by a nice ``trick'' which allows to avoid the Dirac algebra constraints in formulating our relativistic equation. A brief comparison with other quaternionic formulations is also presented.

Hypercomplex Group Theory

Due to the noncommutative nature of quaternions and octonions we introduce barred operators. This objects give the opportunity to manipulate appropriately the hypercomplex fields. The standard problems arising in the definitions of transpose, determinant and trace for quaternionic and octonionic matrices are immediately overcome. We also investigate the possibility to formulate a new approach to Hypercomplex Group Theory (HGT). From a mathematical viewpoint, our aim is to highlight the possibility of looking at new hypercomplex groups by the use of barred operators as fundamental step toward a clear and complete discussion of HGT.

Local Hypercomplex Analyticity

The notion of analyticity is studied in the context of hypercomplex numbers. A critical review of the problems arising from the conventional approach is given. We describe a local analyticity condition which yields the desired type of hypercomplex solutions. The result is the definition of a generalized complex analyticity to hypercomplex space. 02.10.Tq/Vr, 02.30.-f/Dk, 02.90.+p

Quaternionic Electroweak Theory and CKM Matrix

We find in our quaternionic version of the electroweak theory an apparently hopeless problem: In going from complex to quaternions, the calculation of the real-valued parameters of the CKM matrix drastically changes. We aim to explain this quaternionic puzzle.

Octonionic Quantum Mechanics and Complex Geometry

The use of complex geometry allows us to obtain a consistent formulation of octonionic quantum mechanics (OQM). In our octonionic formulation we solve the hermiticity problem and define an appropriate momentum operator within OQM. The nonextendability of the completeness relation and the norm conservation is also discussed in details.

Octonionic Dirac Equation

In order to obtain a consistent formulation of octonionic quantum mechanics (OQM), we introduce left-right barred operators. Such operators enable us to find the translation rules between octonionic numbers and $8\times 8$ real matrices (a translation is also given for $4\times 4$ complex matrices). We develop an octonionic relativistic free wave equation, linear in the derivatives. Even if the wave functions are only one-component we show that four independent solutions, corresponding to those of the Dirac equation, exist.

Octonionic Representations of GL(8,R) and GL(4,C)

Octonionic algebra being nonassociative is difficult to manipulate. We introduce left-right octonionic barred operators which enable us to reproduce the associative GL(8,R) group. Extracting the basis of GL(4,C), we establish an interesting connection between the structure of left-right octonionic barred operators and generic 4x4 complex matrices. As an application we give an octonionic representation of the 4-dimensional Clifford algebra.

Half-whole Dimensions in Quaternionic Quantum Mechanics

We introduce {\em half-whole} dimensions for quaternionic matrices and propose a quaternionic version of the Frobenius-Schur theorem which allows us to obtain the proper quaternionic dimensionality for the representations of the Dirac and Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) algebras.
