On some admissible lattices

This paper explores applications of the so-called Freese's technique, a classical approach to study the congruence variety of a given algebra. We leverage this tool to investigate lattices that are admissible in a given congruence variety. In particular, we present characterizations of congruence modular varieties, Taylor varieties, and varieties satisfying a non-trivial congruence identity by means of lattice omission provable using Freese's technique.

Mal'cev clones over a three-element set up to minor-equivalence

We classify all Mal'cev clones over a three-element set up to minion homomorphisms. This is another step toward the complete classification of three-element relational structures up to pp-constructability. We furthermore provide an alternative proof of Bulatov's result that all Mal'cev clones over a three-element set have an at most 4-ary relational basis.

Iterative In-Context Learning to Enhance LLMs Abstract Reasoning: The Case-Study of Algebraic Tasks

LLMs face significant challenges in systematic generalization, particularly when dealing with reasoning tasks requiring compositional rules and handling out-of-distribution examples. To address these challenges, we introduce an in-context learning methodology that improves the generalization capabilities of general purpose LLMs. Our approach employs an iterative example selection strategy, which incrementally constructs a tailored set of few-shot examples optimized to enhance model's performance on a given task. As a proof of concept, we apply this methodology to the resolution of algebraic expressions involving non-standard simplification rules, according to which the priority of addition and multiplication is changed. Our findings indicate that LLMs exhibit limited proficiency in these mathematical tasks. We further demonstrate that LLMs reasoning benefits from our iterative shot selection prompting strategy integrated with explicit reasoning instructions. Crucially, our experiments reveal that some LLMs achieve better generalization performances when prompted with simpler few-shot examples rather than complex ones following the test data distribution.

Clonoids over vector spaces

Clonoids are sets of finitary operations between two algebraic structures that are closed under composition with their term operations on both sides. We conjecture that, for finite modules $\mathbf A$ and $\mathbf B$ there are only finitely many clonoids from $\mathbf A$ to $\mathbf B$ if and only if $\mathbf A$, $\mathbf B$ are of coprime order. We confirm this conjecture for a broad class of modules $\mathbf A$. In particular we show that, if $\mathbf A$ is a finite $k$-dimensional vector space, then every clonoid from $\mathbf A$ to a coprime module $\mathbf B$ is generated by its $k$-ary functions (and arity $k-1$ does not suffice). In order to prove this results, we investigate `uniform generation by $(\mathbf A,\mathbf B)$-minors', a general criterion, which we show to apply to several other existing classifications results. Based on our analysis, we further prove that the subpower membership problem of certain 2-nilpotent Mal'cev algebras is solvable in polynomial time.

Varieties of MV-monoids and positive MV-algebras

MV-monoids are algebras $\langle A,\vee,\wedge, \oplus,\odot, 0,1\rangle$ where $\langle A, \vee, \wedge, 0, 1\rangle$ is a bounded distributive lattice, both $\langle A, \oplus, 0 \rangle$ and $\langle A, \odot, 1\rangle$ are commutative monoids, and some further connecting axioms are satisfied. Every MV-algebra in the signature $\{\oplus,\neg,0\}$ is term equivalent to an algebra that has an MV-monoid as a reduct, by defining, as standard, $1:= \neg 0$, $x \odot y := \neg(\neg x \oplus\neg y)$, $x \vee y := (x \odot \neg y) \oplus y$ and $x \wedge y := \neg(\neg x \vee \neg y)$. Particular examples of MV-monoids are positive MV-algebras, i.e. the $\{\vee, \wedge, \oplus, \odot, 0, 1\}$-subreducts of MV-algebras. Positive MV-algebras form a peculiar quasivariety in the sense that, albeit having a logical motivation (being the quasivariety of subreducts of MV-algebras), it is not the equivalent quasivariety semantics of any logic. In this paper, we study the lattices of subvarieties of MV-monoids and of positive MV-algebras. In particular, we characterize and axiomatize all almost minimal varieties of MV-monoids, we characterize the finite subdirectly irreducible positive MV-algebras, and we characterize and axiomatize all varieties of positive MV-algebras.

Logic Explanation of AI Classifiers by Categorical Explaining Functors

The most common methods in explainable artificial intelligence are post-hoc techniques which identify the most relevant features used by pretrained opaque models. Some of the most advanced post hoc methods can generate explanations that account for the mutual interactions of input features in the form of logic rules. However, these methods frequently fail to guarantee the consistency of the extracted explanations with the model's underlying reasoning. To bridge this gap, we propose a theoretically grounded approach to ensure coherence and fidelity of the extracted explanations, moving beyond the limitations of current heuristic-based approaches. To this end, drawing from category theory, we introduce an explaining functor which structurally preserves logical entailment between the explanation and the opaque model's reasoning. As a proof of concept, we validate the proposed theoretical constructions on a synthetic benchmark verifying how the proposed approach significantly mitigates the generation of contradictory or unfaithful explanations.

Expansions of abelian squarefree groups

We investigate finitary functions from $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ for a squarefree number $n$. We show that the lattice of all clones on the squarefree set $\mathbb{Z}_{p_1\cdots p_m}$ which contain the addition of $\mathbb{Z}_{p_1\cdots p_m}$ is finite. We provide an upper bound for the cardinality of this lattice through an injective function to the direct product of the lattices of all $(\mathbb{Z}_{p_i}, \mathbb{F}_i)$-linearly closed clonoids, $\mathcal{L}(\mathbb{Z}_{p_i}, \mathbb{F}_i)$, to the $p_i+1$ power, where $\mathbb{F}_i = \prod_{j \in \{1,\dots,m\}\backslash \{i\}}\mathbb{Z}_{p_j}$. These lattices are studied in the litterature and we can find an upper bound for cardinality of them. Furthermore, we prove that these clones can be generated by a set of functions of arity at most $\max(p_1,\dots,p_m)$.

On properties described by terms in commutator relation

We investigate properties of varieties of algebras described by a novel concept of equation that we call \emph{commutator equation}. A commutator equation is a relaxation of the standard term equality obtained substituting the equality relation with the commutator relation. Namely, an algebra $\mathbf{A}$ satisfies the commutator equation $p \approx_{C} q$ if for each congruence theta in Con(\mathbf{A}) and for each substitution $p^{\mathbf{A}}, q^{\mathbf{A}}$ of elements in the same $θ$-class, then $(p^{\mathbf{A}}, q^{\mathbf{A}}) \in [θ, θ]$. This notion of equation draws inspiration from the definition of \emph{weak difference term} and allows for further generalization of it. Furthermore, we present an algorithm that establishes a connection between congruence equations valid within the variety generated by the abelian algebras of the idempotent reduct of a given variety and congruence equations that hold within the entire variety. Additionally, we provide a proof that if the variety generated by the abelian algebras of the idempotent reduct of a variety satisfies a non-trivial idempotent Mal'cev condition then also the entire variety satisfies a non-trivial idempotent Mal'cev condition, statement that follows also form \cite[Theorem 3.13]{KK.TSOC}.

Categorical Foundations of Explainable AI: A Unifying Theory

Explainable AI (XAI) aims to address the human need for safe and reliable AI systems. However, numerous surveys emphasize the absence of a sound mathematical formalization of key XAI notions -- remarkably including the term "explanation" which still lacks a precise definition. To bridge this gap, this paper presents the first mathematically rigorous definitions of key XAI notions and processes, using the well-funded formalism of Category theory. We show that our categorical framework allows to: (i) model existing learning schemes and architectures, (ii) formally define the term "explanation", (iii) establish a theoretical basis for XAI taxonomies, and (iv) analyze commonly overlooked aspects of explaining methods. As a consequence, our categorical framework promotes the ethical and secure deployment of AI technologies as it represents a significant step towards a sound theoretical foundation of explainable AI.

On Freese's technique

In this paper we explore some applications of a certain technique (that we call the Freese's technique), which is a tool for identifying certain lattices as sublattices of the congruence lattice of a given algebra. In particular we will give sufficient conditions for two family of lattices (called the rods and the snakes) to be admissible as sublattices of a variety generated by a given algebra, extending an unpublished result of R. Freese and P. Lipparini.

Interpretable Graph Networks Formulate Universal Algebra Conjectures

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) recently empowered researchers to investigate hard mathematical problems which eluded traditional approaches for decades. Yet, the use of AI in Universal Algebra (UA) -- one of the fields laying the foundations of modern mathematics -- is still completely unexplored. This work proposes the first use of AI to investigate UA's conjectures with an equivalent equational and topological characterization. While topological representations would enable the analysis of such properties using graph neural networks, the limited transparency and brittle explainability of these models hinder their straightforward use to empirically validate existing conjectures or to formulate new ones. To bridge these gaps, we propose a general algorithm generating AI-ready datasets based on UA's conjectures, and introduce a novel neural layer to build fully interpretable graph networks. The results of our experiments demonstrate that interpretable graph networks: (i) enhance interpretability without sacrificing task accuracy, (ii) strongly generalize when predicting universal algebra's properties, (iii) generate simple explanations that empirically validate existing conjectures, and (iv) identify subgraphs suggesting the formulation of novel conjectures.

Enhancing Embedding Representations of Biomedical Data using Logic Knowledge

Knowledge Graph Embeddings (KGE) have become a quite popular class of models specifically devised to deal with ontologies and graph structure data, as they can implicitly encode statistical dependencies between entities and relations in a latent space. KGE techniques are particularly effective for the biomedical domain, where it is quite common to deal with large knowledge graphs underlying complex interactions between biological and chemical objects. Recently in the literature, the PharmKG dataset has been proposed as one of the most challenging knowledge graph biomedical benchmark, with hundreds of thousands of relational facts between genes, diseases and chemicals. Despite KGEs can scale to very large relational domains, they generally fail at representing more complex relational dependencies between facts, like logic rules, which may be fundamental in complex experimental settings. In this paper, we exploit logic rules to enhance the embedding representations of KGEs on the PharmKG dataset. To this end, we adopt Relational Reasoning Network (R2N), a recently proposed neural-symbolic approach showing promising results on knowledge graph completion tasks. An R2N uses the available logic rules to build a neural architecture that reasons over KGE latent representations. In the experiments, we show that our approach is able to significantly improve the current state-of-the-art on the PharmKG dataset. Finally, we provide an ablation study to experimentally compare the effect of alternative sets of rules according to different selection criteria and varying the number of considered rules.

Closed sets of finitary functions between products of finite fields of coprime order

We investigate the finitary functions from a finite product of finite fields $\prod_{j =1}^m\mathbb{F}_{q_j} = \mathbb{K}$ to a finite product of finite fields $\prod_{i =1}^n\mathbb{F}_{p_i} = \mathbb{F}$, where $|\mathbb{K}|$ and $|\mathbb{F}|$ are coprime. An $(\mathbb{F},\mathbb{K})$-linearly closed clonoid is a subset of these functions which is closed under composition from the right and from the left with linear mappings. We give a characterization of these subsets of functions through the $\mathbb{F}_p[\mathbb{K}^{\times}]$-submodules of $\mathbb{F}_p^{\mathbb{K}}$, where $\mathbb{K}^{\times}$ is the multiplicative monoid of $\mathbb{K} = \prod_{i=1}^m\mathbb{F}_{q_i}$. Furthermore we prove that each of these subsets of functions is generated by a set of unary functions and we provide an upper bound for the number of distinct $(\mathbb{F},\mathbb{K})$-linearly closed clonoids.

Mal'cev classes of left-quasigroups and Quandles

In this paper we investigate some Mal'cev classes of varieties of left-quasigroups. We prove that the weakest Mal'cev condition for a variety of left-quasigroup is having a Mal'cev term. Then we specialize to the setting of quandles for which we prove that the meet semidistributive varieties are those which have no finite models.

Mal'cev conditions corresponding to identities for compatible reflexive relations

We investigate Mal'cev conditions described by equations whose variables runs over the set of all compatible reflexive relations. Let $p \leq q$ be an equation in the language $\{\wedge, \circ,+\}$. We give a characterization of the class of all varieties which satisfy $p \leq q$ over the set of all compatible reflexive relations. The aim is to find an analogon of the Pixley-Wille algorithm for conditions expressed by equations over the set of all compatible reflexive relations, and to characterize when an equation $p \leq q$ expresses the same property when considered over the congruence lattices or over the sets of all compatible reflexive relations of algebras in a variety.

Closed sets of finitary functions between finite fields of coprime order

We investigate the finitary functions from a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ to the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$, where $p$ and $q$ are powers of different primes. An $(\mathbb{F}_p,\mathbb{F}_q)$-linearly closed clonoid is a subset of these functions which is closed under composition from the right and from the left with linear mappings. We give a characterization of these subsets of functions through the invariant subspaces of the vector space $\mathbb{F}_p^{\mathbb{F}_q\backslash\{0\}}$ with respect to a certain linear transformation with minimal polynomial $x^{q-1} - 1$. Furthermore we prove that each of these subsets of functions is generated by one unary function.

Clones containing the Mal'cev operation of $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$

We investigate finitary functions from $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$ for two distinct prime numbers $p$ and $q$. We show that the lattice of all clones on the set $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$ which contain the addition of $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$ is finite. We provide an upper bound for the cardinality of this lattice through an injective function to the direct product of the lattice of all $(\mathbb{Z}_p,\mathbb{Z}_q)$-linearly closed clonoids to the $p+1$ power and the lattice of all $(\mathbb{Z}_q,\mathbb{Z}_p)$-linearly closed clonoids to the $q+1$ power. These lattices are studied in arXiv:1910.11759 and there we can find the exact cardinality of them. Furthermore, we prove that these clones can be generated by a set of functions of arity at most $max(\{p,q\})$.
