NLO QCD corrections in Herwig++ with MC@NLO

We present the calculations necessary to obtain next-to-leading order QCD precision with the Herwig++ event generator using the MC@NLO approach, and implement them for all the processes that were previously available from Fortran HERWIG with MC@NLO. We show a range of results comparing the two implementations. With these calculations and recent developments in the automatic generation of NLO matrix elements, it will be possible to obtain NLO precision with Herwig++ for a much wider range of processes

Matching NLO QCD computations with PYTHIA using MC@NLO

We present the matching between a next-to-leading order computation in QCD and the PYTHIA parton shower Monte Carlo, according to the MC@NLO formalism. We study the case of initial-state radiation, and consider in particular single vector boson hadroproduction.

Isolating Wt production at the LHC

We address the issue of single top production in association with a W boson at the Large Hadron Collider, in particular how to obtain an accurate description in the face of the top pair production background given that the two processes interfere with each other. We stress the advantages of an MC@NLO description, and find that for cuts used to isolate the signal, it makes sense to consider Wt as a well-defined production process in that the interference with top pair production is small, and the cross-section of the former is above the scale variation uncertainty associated with the latter. We also consider the case where both Wt and top pair production are backgrounds to a third process (Higgs boson production followed by decay to a W boson pair), and find in this context that interference issues can also be neglected. We discuss the generalization of our results to other situations, aided by a comparison between the MC@NLO approach and a calculation of the WWbb final state matched to a parton shower.

Automation of next-to-leading order computations in QCD: the FKS subtraction

We present the complete automation of the universal subtraction formalism proposed by Frixione, Kunszt, and Signer for the computation of any cross section at the next-to-leading order in QCD. Given a process, the only ingredient to be provided externally is the infrared- and ultraviolet-finite contribution of virtual origin. Our implementation, currently restricted to the case of e+e- collisions, is built upon and works in the same way as MadGraph. It is particularly suited to parallel computation, and it can deal with any physical process resulting from a theory implemented in MadGraph, thus including the Standard Model as well as Beyond the Standard Model theories. We give results for some sample processes that document the performances of the implementation, and show in particular how the number of subtraction terms has an extremely mild growth with final-state multiplicity.

The MC@NLO 3.4 Event Generator

This is the user's manual of MC@NLO 3.4. This package is a practical implementation, based upon the HERWIG event generator, of the MC@NLO formalism, which allows one to incorporate NLO QCD matrix elements consistently into a parton shower framework. Processes available in this version include the hadroproduction of single vector and Higgs bosons, vector boson pairs, heavy quark pairs, single top, single top in association with a W, lepton pairs, and Higgs bosons in association with a W or Z. Spin correlations are included for all processes except ZZ and WZ production. This document is self-contained, but we emphasise the main differences with respect to previous versions.

Updated predictions for the total production cross sections of top and of heavier quark pairs at the Tevatron and at the LHC

We present updated predictions for the total production cross section of top-quark pairs at the Tevatron and at the LHC, and, at the LHC, of heavy-quark pairs with mass in the range 0.5-2 TeV. For t\bar{t} production at the LHC we also present results at \sqrt{S}= 10 TeV, in view of the expected accelerator conditions during the forthcoming 2008 run. Our results are accurate at the level of next-to-leading order in alpha_s, and of next-to-leading threshold logarithms (NLO+NLL). We adopt the most recent parametrizations of parton distribution functions, and compute the corresponding uncertainties. We study the dependence of the results on the top mass, and we assess the impact of missing higher-order corrections by independent variations of factorisation and renormalisation scales.

A Positive-Weight Next-to-Leading-Order Monte Carlo for Heavy Flavour Hadroproduction

We present a next-to-leading order calculation of heavy flavour production in hadronic collisions that can be interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs. The calculation is performed in the context of the POWHEG method. It is suitable for the computation of charm, bottom and top hadroproduction. In the case of top production, spin correlations in the decay products are taken into account.

Matching NLO QCD computations with Parton Shower simulations: the POWHEG method

The aim of this work is to describe in detail the POWHEG method, first suggested by one of the authors, for interfacing parton-shower generators with NLO QCD computations. We describe the method in its full generality, and then specify its features in two subtraction frameworks for NLO calculations: the Catani-Seymour and the Frixione-Kunszt-Signer approach. Two examples are discussed in detail in both approaches: the production of hadrons in e+e- collisions, and the Drell-Yan vector-boson production in hadronic collisions.

The POWHEG-hvq manual version 1.0

This note documents the use of the POWHEG-hvq package, a generator for heavy flavour hadroproduction at next-to-leading order in QCD, that can be easily interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, in such a way that NLO and shower accuracy are both maintained.

The MC@NLO 3.1 Event Generator

This is the user's manual of MC@NLO 3.1. This package is a practical implementation, based upon the HERWIG event generator, of the MC@NLO formalism, which allows one to incorporate NLO QCD matrix elements consistently into a parton shower framework. Processes available in this version include the hadroproduction of single vector and Higgs bosons, vector boson pairs, heavy quark pairs, lepton pairs, and Higgs bosons in association with a W or Z. Spin correlations in decays are included for all processes except ttbar, ZZ, and WZ production. This document is self-contained, but we emphasise the main differences with respect to previous versions.

Bottom production

I briefly review the theory and phenomenology of bottom production at colliders. When all theoretical uncertainties are taken into proper account, and modern measurements are considered, no significant discrepancy is seen between data and QCD predictions

Heavy Flavour Production in Two-Photon Collisions

D* Production in Two-Photon Collisions

We calculate total and differential production rates of D* mesons in two-photon collisions at LEP2. We include full next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and perform an extensive study of the sensitivity of our predictions to variations of the renormalization scale, charm mass, photonic parton distribution set and fragmentation function. The results are compared with recent data from LEP2.

Isolated-photon production in polarized pp collisions

We perform a detailed study of the production of isolated prompt photons in polarized hadronic collisions, in the centre-of-mass energy range relevant to RHIC. We compare the results obtained for a traditional cone-isolation prescription, with those obtained by imposing an isolation condition that eliminates any contribution to the cross section from the fragmentation mechanism. The latter prescription will allow us to present the first fully consistent next-to-leading order calculation in polarized prompt-photon production. We will discuss the theoretical uncertainties affecting the cross section, addressing the issue of the reliability of the perturbative expansion, for both inclusive isolated-photon and photon-plus-jet observables. Finally, we will study the dependence of our predictions upon the polarized parton densities, and the implications for the measurability of the gluon density.
