Shock Acceleration and gamma radiation in Clusters of Galaxies

The nonthermal radiation observed from a handfull of clusters of Galaxies is the proof that particle acceleration occurs in the intracluster medium. It is often believed that shock surfaces associated with either mergers of clusters of galaxies, or with the cosmological inflow of matter onto clusters during structure formation may be the sites for acceleration. We discuss here the effectiveness of shock acceleration in the intracluster medium, stressing that merger related shocks are typically weak, at least for the so-called major mergers. We investigate the implications of shock strengths for gamma ray emission from single clusters of galaxies and for their detectability with future gamma ray experiments such as GLAST. We also discuss the contribution of clusters of galaxies to the extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background.

The gamma ray background from large scale structure formation

Hierarchical clustering of dark matter halos is thought to describe well the large scale structure of the universe. The baryonic component of the halos is shock heated to the virial temperature while a small fraction of the energy flux through the shocks may be energized through the first order Fermi process to relativistic energy per particle. It has been proposed that the electrons accelerated in this way may upscatter the photons of the universal microwave background to gamma ray energies and indeed generate a diffuse background of gamma rays that compares well to the observations. In this paper we calculate the spectra of the particles accelerated at the merger shocks and re-evaluate the contribution of structure formation to the extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background (EDGRB), concluding that this contribution adds up to at most 10% of the observed EDGRB.

Nonthermal radiation from clusters of galaxies: the role of merger shocks in particle acceleration

Nonthermal radiation is observed from clusters of galaxies in the radio, hard X-rays, and possibly in the soft X-ray/UV bands. While it is known that radiative processes related to nonthermal electrons are responsible for this radiation, the sites and nature of particle acceleration are not known. We investigate here the acceleration of protons and electrons in the shocks originated during mergers of clusters of galaxies, where the Fermi acceleration may work. We propose a semi-analytical model to evaluate the Mach number of the shocks generated during clusters mergers and we use this procedure to determine the spectrum of the accelerated particles for each one of the shocks produced during the merger history of a cluster. We follow the proton component, accumulated over cosmological time scales, and the short lived electron component. We conclude that efficient particle acceleration, resulting in nonthermal spectra that compare to observations, occurs mainly in minor mergers, namely mergers between clusters with very different masses. Major mergers, often invoked to be sites for the production of extended radio halos, are found to have on average too weak shocks and are unlikely to result in appreciable nonthermal activity.
