Unwinding of strings thrown into a fuzzball

The traditional black hole has a horizon, with a singularity inside the horizon. But actual microstates of black holes are `fuzzballs', with no horizon and a complex internal structure. We take the simplest hole in string theory -- the extremal 2-charge D1D5 hole -- and study a simple effect that is a consequence of this internal structure of the fuzzball. Suppose we have a NS1 string wrapping the compact circle of the fuzzball solution. In the traditional black hole solution this circle is directly tensored with the remaining directions, and does not shrink to zero size. Thus a part of the string can fall behind the horizon, but not `unwind'. In the fuzzball geometry, this circle makes a nontrivial geometric structure -- the KK monople -- by mixing with the other directions, and thus shrinks to zero at the core of the monopole. Thus the string can `unwind' in the fuzzball geometry, and the winding charge is then manifested by a nontrivial field strength living on the microstate solution. We compute this field strength for a generic microstate, and comment briefly on the physics suggested by the unwinding process.

D1D5 microstate geometries from string amplitudes

We reproduce the asymptotic expansion of the D1D5 microstate geometries by computing the emission amplitudes of closed string states from disks with mixed D1D5 boundary conditions. Thus we provide a direct link between the supergravity and D-brane descriptions of the D1D5 microstates at non-zero string coupling. Microscopically, the profile functions characterizing the microstate solutions are encoded in the choice of a condensate for the twisted open string states connecting D1 and D5 branes.

A (Running) Bolt for New Reasons

We construct a four-parameter family of smooth, horizonless, stationary solutions of ungauged five-dimensional supergravity by using the four-dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild metric as a base space and "magnetizing" its bolt. We then generalize this to a five-parameter family based upon the Euclidean Kerr-Taub-Bolt. These "running Bolt" solutions are necessarily non-static. They also have the same charges and mass as a non-extremal black hole with a classically-large horizon area. Moreover, in a certain regime their mass can decrease as their charges increase. The existence of these solutions supports the idea that the singularities of non-extremal black holes are resolved by low-mass modes that correct the singularity of the classical black hole solution on large (horizon-sized) scales.

Supergravity Solutions from Floating Branes

We solve the equations of motion of five-dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to three U(1) gauge fields using a floating-brane Ansatz in which the electric potentials are directly related to the gravitational warp factors. We find a new class of non-BPS solutions, that can be obtained linearly starting from an Euclidean four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell base. This class - the largest known so far - reduces to the BPS and almost-BPS solutions in certain limits. We solve the equations explicitly when the base space is given by the Israel-Wilson metric, and obtain solutions describing non-BPS D6 and anti-D6 branes kept in equilibrium by flux. We also examine the action of spectral flow on solutions with an Israel-Wilson base and show that it relates these solutions to almost-BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base.

Multi-Center non-BPS Black Holes - the Solution

We construct multi-center, non-supersymmetric four-dimensional solutions describing a rotating anti-D6-D2 black hole and an arbitrary number of D4-D2-D0 black holes in a line. These solutions correspond to an arbitrary number of extremal non-BPS black rings in a Taub-NUT space with a rotating three-charge black hole in the middle. The positions of the centers are determined by solving a set of "bubble" or "integrability" equations that contain cubic polynomials of the inter-center distance, and that allow scaling solutions even when the total four-dimensional angular momentum of the scaling centers is non-zero.

Non-BPS Black Rings and Black Holes in Taub-NUT

We solve the recently-proposed equations describing non-BPS extremal multi-center configurations, and construct explicit solutions describing non-supersymmetric extremal black rings in Taub-NUT, as well as the seed solution for the most general extremal non-BPS under-rotating black hole in four dimensions. We also find solutions that contain both a black hole and a black ring, which descend to four-dimensional extremal non-BPS two-center black holes with generic charges.

Black Rings in Taub-NUT and D0-D6 interactions

We analyze the dynamics of neutral black rings in Taub-NUT spaces and their relation to systems of D0 and D6 branes in the supergravity approximation. We employ several recent techniques, both perturbative and exact, to construct solutions in which thermal excitations of the D0-branes can be turned on or off, and the D6-brane can have $B$-fluxes turned on or off in its worldvolume. By explicit calculation of the interaction energy between the D0 and D6 branes, we can study equilibrium configurations and their stability. We find that although D0 and D6 branes (in the absence of $B$ fields, and at zero temperature) repeal each other at non-zero separation, as they get together they go over continuosly to an unstable bound state of an extremal singular Kaluza-Klein black hole. We also find that, for $B$-fields larger than a critical value, or sufficiently large thermal excitation, the D0 and D6 branes form stable bound states. The bound states with thermally excited D0 branes are black rings in Taub-NUT, and we provide an analysis of their phase diagram.

Non-supersymmetric microstates of the D1-D5-KK system

We construct a discrete family of smooth non-supersymmetric three charge geometries carrying D1 brane, D5 brane and Kaluza-Klein monopole charges in Type IIB supergravity compactified on a six-torus, which can be interpreted as the geometric description of some special states of the brane system. These solutions are asymptotically flat in four dimensions, and generalise previous supersymmetric solutions. The solutions have a qualitatively similar structure to previous non-supersymmetric smooth solutions carrying D1 and D5 brane charges in five dimensions, and indeed can be viewed as the five-dimensional system placed at the core of a Kaluza-Klein monopole. The geometries are smooth, free of horizons and do not have closed timelike curves. One notable difference from the five-dimensional case is that the four-dimensional geometry has no ergoregion.

A class of BPS time-dependent 3-charge microstates from spectral flow

We construct an infinite family of asymptotically flat 3-charge solutions carrying D1, D5 and momentum charges. Generically the solutions also carry two angular momenta. The geometries describe the spectral flow of all the ground states of the D1-D5 CFT. The family is parametrized by four functions describing the embedding of a closed curve in R^4 and an integer n labelling the spectral flow on the left sector. After giving the general prescription for spectral flowing any of the ground states, we give an explicit example of the construction. We identify the asymptotic charges of the resulting solution and show the matching with the corresponding CFT result.

Reduction without reduction: Adding KK-monopoles to five dimensional stationary axisymmetric solutions

We present a general method to add KK-monopole charge to any asymptotically flat stationary axisymmetric solution of five dimensional General Relativity. The technique exploits the underlying SL(3,R) invariance of the system by identifying a particular element of the symmetry group which changes the asymptotic boundary condition and adds KK-monopole charge. Furthermore, we develop a set of technical tools which allow us to apply the SL(3,R) transformations to solutions produced by the Inverse Scattering method. As an example of our methods, we construct the exact solution describing a static black ring carrying KK-monopole charge.

Stationary axisymmetric solutions of five dimensional gravity

We consider stationary axisymmetric solutions of general relativity that asymptote to five dimensional Minkowski space. It is known that this system has a hidden SL(3,R) symmetry. We identify an SO(2,1) subgroup of this symmetry group that preserves the asymptotic boundary conditions. We show that the action of this subgroup on a static solution generates a one-parameter family of stationary solutions carrying angular momentum. We conjecture that by repeated applications of this procedure one can generate all stationary axisymmetric solutions starting from static ones. As an example, we derive the Myers-Perry black hole starting from the Schwarzschild solution in five dimensions.

A Microscopic Model for the Black hole - Black string Phase Transition

Computations in general relativity have revealed an interesting phase diagram for the black hole - black string phase transition, with three different black objects present for a range of mass values. We can add charges to this system by `boosting' plus dualities; this makes only kinematic changes in the gravity computation but has the virtue of bringing the system into the near-extremal domain where a microscopic model can be conjectured. When the compactification radius is very large or very small then we get the microscopic models of 4+1 dimensional near-extremal holes and 3+1 dimensional near-extremal holes respectively (the latter is a uniform black string in 4+1 dimensions). We propose a simple model that interpolates between these limits and reproduces most of the features of the phase diagram. These results should help us understand how `fractionation' of branes works in general situations.

A microstate for the 3-charge black ring

We start with a 2-charge D1-D5 BPS geometry that has the shape of a ring; this geometry is regular everywhere. In the dual CFT there exists a perturbation that creates one unit of excitation for left movers, and thus adds one unit of momentum P. This implies that there exists a corresponding normalizable perturbation on the near-ring D1-D5 geometry. We find this perturbation, and observe that it is smooth everywhere. We thus find an example of `hair' for the black ring carrying three charges -- D1, D5 and one unit of P. The near-ring geometry of the D1-D5 supertube can be dualized to a D6 brane carrying fluxes corresponding to the `true' charges, while the quantum of P dualizes to a D0 brane. We observe that the fluxes on the D6 brane are at the threshold between bound and unbound states of D0-D6, and our wavefunction helps us learn something about binding at this threshold.

Smooth geometries with four charges in four dimensions

A class of axially symmetric, rotating four-dimensional geometries carrying D1, D5, KK monopole and momentum charges is constructed. The geometries are found to be free of horizons and singulaties, and are candidates to be the gravity duals of microstates of the (0,4) CFT. These geometries are constructed by performing singularity analysis on a suitably chosen class of solutions of six-dimensional minimal supergravity written over a Gibbons-Hawking base metric. The properties of the solutions raise some interesting questions regarding the CFT.

Dynamics of supertubes

We find the evolution of arbitrary excitations on 2-charge supertubes, by mapping the supertube to a string carrying traveling waves. We argue that when the coupling is increased from zero the energy of excitation leaks off to infinity, and when the coupling is increased still further a new set of long lived excitations emerge. We relate the excitations at small and large couplings to excitations in two different phases in the dual CFT. We conjecture a way to distinguish bound states from unbound states among 3-charge BPS geometries; this would identify black hole microstates among the complete set of BPS geometries.

Fuzzball geometries and higher derivative corrections for extremal holes

2-charge D1-D5 microstates are described by geometries which end in `caps' near r=0; these caps reflect infalling quanta back in finite time. We estimate the travel time for 3-charge geometries in 4-D, and find agreement with the dual CFT. This agreement supports a picture of `caps' for 3-charge geometries. We argue that higher derivative corrections to such geometries arise from string winding modes. We then observe that the `capped' geometries have no noncontractible circles, so these corrections remain bounded everywhere and cannot create a horizon or singularity.

Branes wrapping Black Holes

We examine the dynamics of extended branes, carrying lower dimensional brane charges, wrapping black holes and black hole microstates in M and Type II string theory. We show that they have a universal dispersion relation typical of threshold bound states with a total energy equal to the sum of the contributions from the charges. In near-horizon geometries of black holes, these are BPS states, and the dispersion relation follows from supersymmetry as well as properties of the conformal algebra. However they break all supersymmetries of the full asymptotic geometries of black holes and microstates. We comment on a recent proposal which uses these states to explain black hole entropy.

Geometry of D1-D5-P bound states

Supersymmetric solutions of 6-d supergravity (with two translation symmetries) can be written as a hyperkahler base times a 2-D fiber. The subset of these solutions which correspond to true bound states of D1-D5-P charges give microstates of the 3-charge extremal black hole. To understand the characteristics shared by the bound states we decompose known bound state geometries into base-fiber form. The axial symmetry of the solutions make the base Gibbons-Hawking. We find the base to be actually `pseudo-hyperkahler': The signature changes from (4,0) to (0,4) across a hypersurface. 2-charge D1-D5 geometries are characterized by a `central curve' $S^1$; the analogue for 3-charge appears to be a hypersurface that for our metrics is an orbifold of $S^1\times S^3$.
