Phase transitions in Wick-rotated $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric optics

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric models with a Wick rotation of time ($ t \rightarrow \pm i t$) show spectral phase transitions that are similar to those of dissipative systems driven out of equilibrium. Optics can provide an accessible test bed to explore spectral phase transitions of Wick-rotated $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric models. This is shown by considering the transverse dynamics of laser light in optical cavities with variable reflectivity and tilted mirrors. As examples, we discuss in details the optical analogue of the hydrodynamic Squire model of vorticity and the Wick-rotated $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear dimer model.

Tunable dynamic Fano resonances in coupled-resonant optical waveguide

A route toward lineshape engineering of Fano resonances in photonic structures is theoretically proposed, which uses dynamic modulation of the refractive index of a microcavity. The method is exemplified by considering coupled-resonator optical waveguide systems. An exact Floquet analysis, based on coupled-mode theory, is presented. Two distinct kinds of resonances can be dynamically created, depending on whether the static structure sustains a localized mode or not. In the former case a single Fano resonance arises, which can be tuned in both frequency and line width by varying the refractive index modulation amplitude and frequency. In the latter case two resonances, in the form of narrow asymmetric dips in the transmittance, are found, which can overlap resulting in an electromagnetically-induced transparency effect.

Synthetic gauge fields for light beams in optical resonators

A method to realize artificial magnetic fields for light waves trapped in passive optical cavities with anamorphic optical elements is theoretically proposed. In particular, when a homogeneous magnetic field is realized, a highly-degenerate Landau level structure for the frequency spectrum of the transverse resonator modes is obtained, corresponding to a cyclotron motion of the optical cavity field. This can be probed by transient excitation of the passive optical resonator.

Mixed Rabi Jaynes-Cummings model of a three-level atom interacting with two quantized fields

The quantum Rabi model describes the ultrastrong interaction of a two-level atom coupled to a single quantized bosonic mode. As compared to the Jaynes-Cummings model, in the Rabi model the absorption and emission processes do not need to satisfy energy conservation and the usual rotating wave approximation (RWA) breaks down. As a result, the atom-field dynamics in the Hilbert space splits into two independent parity chains, exhibiting a collapse-revival pattern and exact periodic dynamics in the limit of degenerate atomic levels. Here we introduce a mixed Rabi Jaynes-Cummings model by considering a three-level atom interacting with two quantized bosonic fields, in which the RWA is made for one transition (with a weak atom-field coupling) but not for the other one (with an ultrastrong atom-field coupling). As a result, we show that the field in the weak coupled atomic transition can be used as a tool to control the atom-field dynamics of the other (strong coupled) transition, thus realizing an effective two-level quantum Rabi model with a controllable field. In particular, a periodic temporal dynamics of the atom-field state can be realized by appropriate tuning of the weak control field, even for non-degenerate atomic levels. A photonic simulator of the mixed Rabi Jaynes-Cummings model, based on light transport in evanescently-coupled optical waveguide lattices, is also briefly discussed.

Non-reciprocal transmission in photonic lattices based on unidirectional coherent perfect absorption

A method for realizing asymmetric (one-way) transmission of discretized light in modulated, linear and purely passive optical lattices is suggested, which exploits the idea of unidirectional coherent perfect absorption. The system consists of a linear photonic lattice of coupled resonators or waveguides, side coupled to a chain of lossy elements, in which light can avoid the occupation of the dissipative sites when propagating in one way, but not in the opposite one. Non-reciprocity requires modulation of the resonator/waveguide parameters, realizing a dissipative optical Aharonov-Bohm diode with non-reciprocal behavior.

Supersymmetric Bragg gratings

The supersymmetric (SUSY) structure of coupled-mode equations that describe scattering of optical waves in one-dimensional Bragg gratings is highlighted. This property can find applications to the synthesis of special Bragg filters and distributed-feedback (DFB) optical cavities. In particular, multiple SUSY (Darboux-Crum) transformations can be used to synthesize DFB filters with any desired number of resonances at target frequencies. As an example, we describe the design of a DFB structure with a set of equally-spaced resonances, i.e. a frequency comb transmission filter.

Supersymmetric transparent optical intersections

Supersymmetric (SUSY) optical structures provide a versatile platform to manipulate the scattering and localization properties of light, with potential applications to mode conversion, spatial multiplexing and invisible devices. Here we show that SUSY can be exploited to realize broadband transparent intersections between guiding structures in optical networks for both continuous and discretized light. These include transparent crossing of high-contrast-index waveguides and directional couplers, as well as crossing of guiding channels in coupled resonator lattices.

Fractional Schrödinger equation in optics

In quantum mechanics, the space-fractional Schrödinger equation provides a natural extension of the standard Schrödinger equation when the Brownian trajectories in Feynman path integrals are replaced by Levy flights. Here an optical realization of the fractional Schrödinger equation, based on transverse light dynamics in aspherical optical cavities, is proposed. As an example a laser implementation of the fractional quantum harmonic oscillator is presented, in which dual Airy beams can be selectively generated under off-axis longitudinal pumping.

A unidirectional invisible PT-symmetric complex crystal with arbitrary thickness

We introduce a new class of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex crystals which are almost transparent and one-way reflectionless over a broad frequency range around the Bragg frequency, i.e. unidirectionally invisible, regardless of the thickness $L$ of the crystal. The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex crystal is synthesized by a supersymmetric transformation of an Hermitian square well potential, and exact analytical expressions of transmission and reflection coefficients are given. As $L$ is increased, the transmittance and reflectance from one side remain close to one and zero, respectively, whereas the reflectance from the other side secularly grows like $ \sim L^2$ owing to unidirectional Bragg scattering. This is a distinctive feature as compared to the previously studied case of the complex sinusoidal $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential $V(x)=V_0 \exp(-2i k_ox)$ at the symmetry breaking point, where transparency breaks down as $L \rightarrow \infty$.

Fermionic statistics suppresses Fano resonances

Fano resonances and bound states with energy in the continuum are ubiquitous phenomena in different areas of physics. Observations, however, have been limited so far to single-particle processes. In this work we experimentally investigate the multi-particle case and observe Fano interference in a non-interacting two-particle Fano-Anderson model by considering propagation of two-photon states in engineered photonic lattices. We demonstrate that the quantum statistics of the particles, either bosonic or fermionic, strongly affects the decay process. Remarkably, we find that the Fano resonance, when two discrete levels are coupled to a continuum, is suppressed in the fermionic case.

Talbot self-imaging in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex crystals

The Talbot effect, i.e. the self-imaging property of a periodic wave in near-field diffraction, is a remarkable interference phenomenon in paraxial systems with continuous translational invariance. In crystals, i.e. systems with discrete translational invariance, self-imaging has been regarded so far as a seldom effect, restricted to special sets of initial field distributions. Here it is shown that in a class of gapless $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex crystals at the symmetry breaking threshold Talbot revivals can arise for almost any initial periodic wave distribution which is commensurate with the lattice period. A possible experimental realization of commensurate Talbot self-imaging for light pulses in complex 'temporal' crystals, realized in an optical dispersive fiber loop with amplitude and phase modulators, is briefly discussed.

Aharonov-Bohm photonic cages in waveguide and coupled resonator lattices by synthetic magnetic fields

We suggest a method for trapping photons in quasi one-dimensional waveguide or coupled-resonator lattices, which is based on an optical analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm cages for charged particles. Light trapping results from a destructive interference of Aharonov-Bohm type induced by a synthetic magnetic field, which is realized by periodic modulation of the waveguide/resonator propagation constants/resonances.

Anti-Newtonian dynamics and self-induced Bloch oscillations of correlated particles

We predict that two correlated particles hopping on a one-dimensional Hubbard lattice can show transient self-acceleration and self-induced Bloch oscillations as a result of anti-Newtonian dynamics. Self-propulsion occurs for two particles with opposite effective mass on the lattice and requires long-range particle interaction. A photonic simulator of the two-particle Hubbard model with controllable long-range interaction, where self-propulsion can be observed, is discussed.

Adiabatic quantum state transfer in tight-binding chains using periodic driving fields

A method for high-fidelity coherent adiabatic transport in a zig-zag tight-binding chain, based on application of two external periodic driving fields, is theoretically proposed. The method turns out to be robust against imperfections and disorder of the static lattice Hamiltonian, is tolerant to next-nearest neighborhood interactions, and enables coherent transport in long chains without the need for a local control and timing of the trapping potential.

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric microring laser-absorber

The lasing and coherent perfect absorption (CPA) properties of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric microrings with mixed index and gain gratings, externally coupled to a bus waveguide, are theoretically investigated. For a complex grating at the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, perfect unidirectional (either clockwise or counterclockwise) laser emission can be realized, however the grating does not discriminate longitudinal modes and CPA can not be simultaneously achieved. Above the grating $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, single mode emission and simultaneous CPA can be obtained, with unbalanced and controllable excitation of clockwise and counterclockwise modes in the ring.

Invisible surface defects in a tight-binding lattice

Surface Tamm states arise in one-dimensional lattices from some defects at the lattice edge and their energy generally falls in a gap of the crystal. The defects at the surface change rather generally the phase of propagative Bloch waves scattered off at the lattice edge, so that an observer, far from the surface, can detect the existence of edge defects from e.g. time-of-flight measurements as a delay or an advancement of a Bloch wave packet. Here we show that a special class of defects can sustain surface Tamm states which are invisible, in a sense that reflected waves acquire the same phase as in a fully homogeneous lattice with no surface state. Surface states have an energy embedded into the tight-binding lattice band and show a lower than exponential (algebraic) localization. Like most of bound states in the continuum of von Neumann - Wigner type, such states are fragile and decay into resonance surface states in presence of perturbations or lattice disorder. The impact of structural lattice imperfections and disorder on the invisibility of the defects is investigated by numerical simulations.

Non-Hermitian shortcut to stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

We propose a non-Hermitian generalization of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), which allows one to increase speed and fidelity of the adiabatic passage. This is done by adding balanced imaginary (gain/loss) terms in the diagonal (bare energy) terms of the Hamiltonian and choosing them such that they cancel exactly the nonadiabatic couplings, providing in this way an effective shortcut to adiabaticity. Remarkably, for a STIRAP using delayed Gaussian-shaped pulses in the counter-intuitive scheme the imaginary terms of the Hamiltonian turn out to be time independent. A possible physical realization of non-Hermitian STIRAP, based on light transfer in three evanescently-coupled optical waveguides, is proposed.

Coherent transfer by adiabatic passage in two-dimensional lattices

Coherent tunneling by adiabatic passage (CTAP) is a well-established technique for robust spatial transport of quantum particles in linear chains. Here we introduce two exactly-solvable models where the CTAP protocol can be extended to two-dimensional lattice geometries. Such bi-dimensional lattice models are synthesized from time-dependent second-quantization Hamiltonians, in which the bosonic field operators evolve adiabatically like in an ordinary three-level CTAP scheme thus ensuring adiabatic passage in Fock space.
