Ordinary abelian varieties: isogeny graphs and polarizations

Given an integer $D$ and an ordinary isogeny class of abelian varieties defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with commutative $\mathbb{F}_q$-endomorphism algebra, we provide algorithms for computing all isogenies of degree dividing $D$ and polarizations of degree dividing $D$. We discuss phenomena that arise for higher dimension abelian varieties but not elliptic curves, bounds on the diameter of the graph of minimal isogenies, and decompositions of isogeny graphs into orbits for the Picard group of the Frobenius order.

Isogeny graphs of abelian varieties and singular ideals in orders

Famously, Kohel proved that isogeny graphs of ordinary elliptic curves are beautifully structured objects, now called volcanos. We prove graph structural theorems for abelian varieties of any dimension with commutative endomorphism ring and containing a fixed locally Bass order, leveraging an ideal-theoretic perspective on isogeny graphs. This generalizes previous results, which relied on restrictive additional assumptions, such as maximal real multiplication, ordinary, and absolutely simple (Brooks, Jetchev, Wesolowski 2017). In particular, our work also applies to non-simple and non-ordinary isogeny classes. To obtain our results, we first prove a structure theorem for the lattice of inclusion of the overorders of a locally Bass order in an \'etale algebra which is of independent interest. This analysis builds on a careful study of local singularities of the orders. We include several examples of volcanoes and isogeny graphs exhibiting unexpected properties ultimately due to our more general setting.

Weil polynomials of small degree

Honda and Tate showed that the isogeny classes of abelian varieties of dimension $g$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ are classified in terms of $q$-Weil polynomials of degree $2g$, that is, monic integer polynomials whose set of complex roots consists of $g$ conjugate pairs of absolute value $\sqrt{q}$. There are descriptions of the space of such polynomials for $g \leq 5$, but for $g=3$, $4$ and $5$, these results contain mistakes. We correct these statements. Our proofs build on a criterion that determines when a real polynomial has only real roots in terms of the non-necessarily distinct roots of its first derivative.

Labeling abelian varieties over finite fields

We describe a deterministic process to associate a practical, permanent label to isomorphism classes of abelian varieties defined over finite fields with commutative endomorphism algebra as long as they are ordinary or defined over a prime field. In the ordinary case, we also provide labels for the polarizations they admit.

Abelian varieties over finite fields with commutative endomorphism algebra: theory and algorithms

We give a categorical description of all abelian varieties with commutative endomorphism ring over a finite field with $q=p^a$ elements in a fixed isogeny class in terms of pairs consisting of a fractional $\mathbb Z[\pi,q/\pi]$-ideal and a fractional $W\otimes_{\mathbb Z_p} \mathbb Z_p[\pi,q/\pi]$-ideal, with $\pi$ the Frobenius endomorphism and $W$ the ring of integers in an unramified extension of $\mathbb Q_p$ of degree $a$. The latter ideal should be compatible at $p$ with the former and stable under the action of a semilinear Frobenius (and Verschiebung) operator; it will be the Dieudonn\'e module of the corresponding abelian variety. Using this categorical description we create effective algorithms to compute isomorphism classes of these objects and we produce many new examples exhibiting exotic patterns.

Abelian surfaces over finite fields containing no curves of genus $3$ or less

We study abelian surfaces defined over finite fields which do not contain any possibly singular curve of genus less than or equal to $3$. Firstly, we complete and expand the characterisation of isogeny classes of abelian surfaces with no curves of genus up to $2$ initiated by the first author \emph{et al.~}in previous work. Secondly, we show that, for simple abelian surfaces, containing a curve of genus $3$ is equivalent to admitting a polarisation of degree $4$. Thanks to this result, we can use existing algorithms to check which isomorphism classes in the isogeny classes containing no genus $2$ curves have a polarisation of degree $4$. Thirdly, we characterise isogeny classes of abelian surfaces with no curves of genus $\leq 2$, containing no abelian surface with a polarisation of degree $4$. Finally, we describe the absolutely irreducible genus $3$ curves lying on abelian surfaces containing no curves of genus less than or equal to $2$.

Local isomorphism classes of fractional ideals of orders in \'etale algebras

We study the local isomorphism classes, also known as genera or weak equivalence classes, of fractional ideals of orders in \'etale algebras. We provide a classification in terms of linear algebra objects over residue fields. As a by-product, we obtain a recursive algorithm to compute representatives of the classes, which vastly outperforms previously known methods.

Abelian varieties over finite fields and their groups of rational points

We study the groups of rational points of abelian varieties defined over a finite field $ \mathbb{F}_q$ whose endomorphism rings are commutative, or, equivalently, whose isogeny classes are determined by squarefree characteristic polynomials. When $\mathrm{End}(A)$ is locally Gorenstein, we show that the group structure of $A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is determined by $\mathrm{End}(A)$. Moreover, we prove that the same conclusion is attained if $\mathrm{End}(A)$ has local Cohen-Macaulay type at most $ 2$, under the additional assumption that $A$ is ordinary or $q$ is prime. The result in the Gorenstein case is used to characterize squarefree cyclic isogeny classes in terms of conductor ideals. Going in the opposite direction, we characterize squarefree isogeny classes of abelian varieties with $N$ rational points in which every abelian group of order $N$ is realized as a group of rational points. Finally, we study when an abelian variety $A$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and its dual $A^\vee$ succeed or fail to satisfy several interrelated properties, namely $A\cong A^\vee$, $A(\mathbb{F}_q)\cong A^\vee(\mathbb{F}_q)$, and $\mathrm{End}(A)=\mathrm{End}(A^\vee)$. In the process, we exhibit a sufficient condition for $A\not\cong A^\vee$ involving the local Cohen-Macaulay type of $\mathrm{End}(A)$. In particular, such an abelian variety $A$ is not a Jacobian, or even principally polarizable.

Ideal classes of orders in quaternion algebras

We provide an algorithm that, given any order $O$ in a quaternion algebra over a global field, computes representatives of all right equivalence classes of right $O$-ideals, including the non-invertible ones. The theory is developed for a more general kind of algebras.

Modules over orders, conjugacy classes of integral matrices, and abelian varieties over finite fields

We give an algorithm to compute representatives of the conjugacy classes of semisimple square integral matrices with given minimal and characteristic polynomials. We also give an algorithm to compute the $\mathbb{F}_q$-isomorphism classes of abelian varieties over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ which belong to an isogeny class determined by a characteristic polynomial $h$ of Frobenius when $h$ is ordinary, or $q$ is prime and $h$ has no real roots.

Cohen-Macaulay type of orders, generators and ideal classes

In this paper we study the (Cohen-Macaulay) type of orders over Dedekind domains in \'etale algebras. We provide a bound for the type, and give formulas to compute it. We relate the type of the overorders of a given order to the size of minimal generating sets of its fractional ideals, generalizing known results for Gorenstein and Bass orders. Finally, we give a classification of the ideal classes with multiplicator ring of type $2$, with applications to the computations of the conjugacy classes of integral matrices and the isomorphism classes of abelian varieties over finite fields.

Products and Polarizations of Super-Isolated Abelian Varieties

In this paper we study super-isolated abelian varieties, that is, abelian varieties over finite fields whose isogeny class contains a single isomorphism class. The goal of this paper is to (1) characterize whether a product of super-isolated varieties is super-isolated, and (2) characterize which super-isolated abelian varieties admit principal polarizations, and how many up to polarized isomorphisms.

Every finite abelian group is the group of rational points of an ordinary abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_2$, $\mathbb{F}_3$ and $\mathbb{F}_5$

We show that every finite abelian group $G$ occurs as the group of rational points of an ordinary abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_2$, $\mathbb{F}_3$ and $\mathbb{F}_5$. We produce partial results for abelian varieties over a general finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, we show that certain abelian groups cannot occur as groups of rational points of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $q$ is large. Finally, we show that every finite cyclic group arises as the group of rational points of infinitely many simple abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_2$.

Polarizations of abelian varieties over finite fields via canonical liftings

We describe all polarizations for all abelian varieties over a finite field in a fixed isogeny class corresponding to a squarefree Weil polynomial, when one variety in the isogeny class admits a canonical liftings to characteristic zero, i.e., a lifting for which the reduction morphism induces an isomorphism of endomorphism rings. Categorical equivalences between abelian varieties over finite fields and fractional ideals in \'etale algebras enable us to explicitly compute isomorphism classes of polarized abelian varieties satisfying some mild conditions. We also implement algorithms to perform these computations.

Computing abelian varieties over finite fields isogenous to a power

In this paper we give a module-theoretic description of the isomorphism classes of abelian varieties $A$ isogenous to $B^r$, where the characteristic polynomial $g$ of Frobenius of $B$ is an ordinary square-free $q$-Weil polynomial, for a power $q$ of a prime $p$, or a square-free $p$-Weil polynomial with no real roots. Under some extra assumptions on the polynomial $g$ we give an explicit description of all the isomorphism classes which can be computed in terms of fractional ideals of an order in a finite product of number fields. In the ordinary case, we also give a module-theoretic description of the polarizations of $A$.

Computing square-free polarized abelian varieties over finite fields

We give algorithms to compute isomorphism classes of ordinary abelian varieties defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose characteristic polynomial (of Frobenius) is square-free and of abelian varieties defined over the prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$ whose characteristic polynomial is square-free and does not have real roots. In the ordinary case we are also able to compute the polarizations and the group of automorphisms (of the polarized variety) and, when the polarization is principal, the period matrix.

Computing the ideal class monoid of an order

There are well known algorithms to compute the class group of the maximal order $\mathcal{O}_K$ of a number field $K$ and the group of invertible ideal classes of a non-maximal order $R$. In this paper we explain how to compute also the isomorphism classes of non-invertible ideals of an order $R$ in a finite product of number fields $K$. In particular we also extend the above-mentioned algorithms to this more general setting. Moreover, we generalize a theorem of Latimer and MacDuffee providing a bijection between the conjugacy classes of integral matrices with given minimal and characteristic polynomials and the isomorphism classes of lattices in certain $\mathbb{Q}$-algebras, which under certain assumptions can be explicitly described in terms of ideal classes.

Super-multiplicativity of ideal norms in number fields

In this article we study inequalities of ideal norms. We prove that in a subring $R$ of a number field every ideal can be generated by at most $3$ elements if and only if the ideal norm satisfies $N(IJ) \geq N(I)N(J)$ for every pair of non-zero ideals $I$ and $J$ of every ring extension of $R$ contained in the normalization of $R$.
