Real and virtual photons effects in di-lepton production at the LHC

We show the SM prediction of di-lepton production at the LHC where to the usual Drell-Yan production we add the contribution from Photon-Initiated processes. We discuss the effects of the inclusion of photon interactions in the high invariant mass region (TeV region) and their consequences on BSM heavy Z'-boson searches.

A Mood Value for Fair Resource Allocations

In networking and computing, resource allocation is typically addressed using classical sharing protocols as, for instance, the proportional division rule, the max-min fair allocation , or other solutions inspired by cooperative game theory. In this paper, we argue that, describing the resource allocation problem as a cooperative game, such classical resource allocation approaches, as well as associated notions of fairness, show important limitations. We identify in the individual satisfaction rate the key aspect of the challenge of defining a new notion of fairness and, consequently, a resource allocation algorithm more appropriate for the cooperative context. We generalize the concept of user satisfaction considering the set of admissible solutions for bankruptcy games. We adapt the Jain's fairness index to include the new user satisfaction rate. Accordingly, we propose a new allocation rule we call 'Mood Value'. For each user it equalizes our novel game-theoretic definition of user satisfaction with respect to a distribution of the resource. We test the mood value and the new fairness index through extensive simulations showing how they better support the fairness analysis.

$Z'$, Higgses and heavy neutrinos in $U(1)'$ models: from the LHC to the GUT scale

We study a class of non-exotic minimal $U(1) '$ extensions of the Standard Model, which includes all scenarios that are anomaly-free with the ordinary fermion content augmented by one Right-Handed neutrino per generation, wherein the new Abelian gauge group is spontaneously broken by the non-zero Vacuum Expectation Value of an additional Higgs singlet field, in turn providing mass to a $Z'$ state. By adopting the $B-L$ example, whose results can be recast into those pertaining to the whole aforementioned class, and allowing for both scalar and gauge mixing, we first extract the surviving parameter space in presence of up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints. Over the corresponding parameter configurations, we then delineate the high energy behaviour of such constructs in terms of their stability and perturbativity. Finally, we highlight key production and decay channels of the new states entering the spectra of this class of models, i.e., heavy neutrinos, a second Higgs state and the $Z'$, which are amenable to experimental investigation at the Large Hadron Collider. We therefore set the stage to establish a direct link between measurements obtainable at the Electro-Weak scale and the dynamics of the underlying model up to those where a Grand Unification Theory embedding a $U(1)'$ can be realised.

Electroweak production of Higgs boson pairs in 2HDMs

One of the main features of a Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is the presence of two additional neutral Higgs states, besides the one mimicking the ~125 GeV state observed at the LHC. The three Higgs bosons of a 2HDM can be produced at the LHC either singly via gluon fusion or in pairs with each other. When analyzing their pair production, the emphasis is laid on gluon-initiated processes, and the electroweak (EW) production is generally not treated on the same footing, assuming its contribution to be highly subleading. We show here that when the sum of the masses of the lightest scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons in the Type-I 2HDM is smaller than the Z-boson mass, their EW pair production can dominate over QCD pair production by orders of magnitude.

The effect of real and virtual photons in the di-lepton channel at the LHC

We present a study of di-lepton production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with a particular focus on the contribution resulting from both real and virtual photons in the initial state. We discuss the region of phase space in which the invariant mass of the lepton pair is of the order of several TeV, where searches for new physics phenomena yielding a di-lepton signature are presently carried out. We study both the yield and associated uncertainties for all possible topologies in photon-induced di-lepton production and compare these with what is expected in the standard Drell-Yan channel, where quark-antiquark pairs are responsible for the production of lepton pairs. We analyse the impact of these QED contributions on the expected Standard Model background and on searches for new physics. In this latter case, we use the production of an extra heavy $Z^\prime$-boson predicted by the Sequential Standard Model (SSM) as a benchmark process.

Single and Double SM-like Higgs Boson Production at Future Electron-Positron Colliders in C2HDMs

We investigate single- and double-$h$, the discovered Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson, production at future $e^+e^-$ colliders in Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Models (C2HDMs) and Elementary 2-Higgs Doublet Models (E2HDMs) with a softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry. We first survey their parameter spaces allowed by theoretical bounds from perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability as well as by future data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with an integrated luminosity up to 3000 fb$^{-1}$ under the assumption that no new Higgs boson is detected. We then discuss how different the cross sections can be between the two scenarios when $κ_V^{}$, the $hVV$ ($V=W^\pm,Z$) coupling normalised to the SM value, is taken to be the same value in the both scenario We find that if $κ_V^2$ is found to be, e.g., $0.98$, then the cross sections in C2HDMs with $f$ (the compositeness scale) in the TeV region can be maximally changed to be about $-15\%$, $-18\%$, $-50\%$ and $-35\%$ for the $e^+e^-\to t \bar t h$, $e^+e^-\to Zhh$, $e^+e^-\to e^+e^-hh$ and $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}hh$ processes, respectively, with respect to those in E2HDMs. Thus, a future electron-positron collider has the potential to discriminate between E2HDMs and C2HDMs, even when only $h$ event rates are measured.

Light charged Higgs boson scenario in 3-Higgs doublet models

The constraints from the measurements of the $B\to X_sγ$ decay rate on the parameter space of 3-Higgs Doublet Models (3HDMs), where all the doublets have non-zero vacuum expectation values, are studied at the next-to-leading order in QCD. In order to naturally avoid the presence of flavour changing neutral currents at the tree level, we impose two softly-broken discrete $Z_2$ symmetries. This gives rise to five independent types of 3HDMs that differ in their Yukawa couplings. We show that in all these 3HDMs (including the case of type-II-like Yukawa interactions) both masses of the two charged Higgs bosons $m_{H_1^\pm}$ and $m_{H_2^\pm}$ can be smaller than the top mass $m_t$ while complying with the constraints from $B\to X_sγ$. As an interesting phenomenological consequence, the branching ratios of the charged Higgs bosons decay into the $cb$ final states can be as large as $80\%$ when their masses are taken to be below $m_t$ in two of the five 3HDMs (named as Type-Y and Type-Z). This light charged Higgs boson scenario provides a hallmark 3HDM signature that cannot be realised in $Z_2$ symmetric 2-Higgs doublet models. We find that in the Type-Y and Type-Z 3HDMs the scenario with $90\,{\rm GeV}< m_{H^\pm_1}^{}\,, m_{H^\pm_2}^{}<m_t$ is ruled out by the direct searches at the LHC, but in the Type-Y 3HDM $80~\text{GeV}<m_{H_1^\pm}^{}<90~\text{GeV}$ and $90~\text{GeV}<m_{H_2^\pm}^{}<m_t$ is allowed by $B\to X_sγ$ and direct searches at LEP2, Tevatron and LHC due to the reduced sensitivity of these searches to the degenerate case $m_{H_1^\pm}\approx m_{W^\pm}$. The cases where only one or both charged Higgs bosons are above the top quark mass are also naturally allowed in the both Type-Y and Type-Z 3HDMs.

Naturalness and Dark Matter in the BLSSM

We study the naturalness properties of the $B-L$ Supersymmetric Standard Model (BLSSM) and compare them to those of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at both low (i.e., Large Hadron Collider) energies and high (i.e., unification) scales. By adopting standard measures of naturalness, we assess that, in presence of full unification of the additional gauge couplings and scalar/fermionic masses of the BLSSM, such a scenario reveals a somewhat higher degree of Fine-Tuning (FT) than the MSSM, when the latter is computed at the unification scale and all available theoretical and experimental constraints, but the Dark Matter (DM) ones, are taken into account. Yet, such a difference, driven primarily by the collider limits requiring a high mass for the gauge boson associated to the breaking of the additional $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge group of the BLSSM in addition to the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ of the MSSM, should be regarded as a modest price to pay for the former in relation to the latter, if one notices that the non-minimal scenario offers a significant volume of parameter space where numerous DM solutions of different compositions can be found to the relic density constraints, unlike the case of the minimal structure, wherein only one type of solution is accessible over an ever diminishing parameter space. In fact, this different level of tension within the two SUSY models in complying with current data is well revealed when the FT measure is recomputed in terms of the low energy spectra of the two models, over their allowed regions of parameter space now in presence of all DM bounds, as it is shown that the tendency is now opposite, the BLSSM appearing more natural than the MSSM.

Photon-initiated production of a di-lepton final state at the LHC: cross section versus forward-backward asymmetry studies

We explore the effects of Photon Induced (PI) production of a dilepton final state in the Large Hadron Collider environment. Using QED Parton Distribution Function (PDF) sets we can treat the photons as real partons inside the protons and compare their yield directly to that of the Drell-Yan (DY) process. In particular, we concentrate on an error analysis of the two mechanisms. In order to do so, we use the NNPDF set, which comes with a set of replicas to estimate the systematic PDF error. On the one hand, we find that the PI contribution becomes dominant over DY above a dilepton invariant mass of 3 TeV. On the other hand, the PI predictions are affected by a large error coming from the QED PDFs, well above the one affecting the DY mode. We assess the impact of these uncertainties in the context of resonant and non-resonant searches for a neutral massive vector boson (Z') through the differential cross section and Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) observables as a function of the dilepton invariant mass. While the former is subject to the aforementioned significant residual errors the latter shows the systematic error cancellation expected (recall that AFB is a ratio of cross sections) even in presence of PI contributions, so that the recently emphasized key role played by AFB as a valid tool for both Z' discovery and interpretation in both resonant and non-resonant mode is further consolidated.

The 750 GeV threshold to a new particle world

We show how an excess in the diphoton channel can be the effect of neither a resonance nor an end-point in a cascade decay, but rather of a threshold for virtual production of a pair of extra quarks, each with half of peak invariant mass, onsetting in both the $gg$-initiated production and the $γγ$-induced decay of an off-shell $Z$ boson. For our analysis we consider as paradigmatic example the 750 GeV excess previously seen at the end of 2015 with the Run 2 data of the LHC but not confirmed with 2016 data.

Light charged Higgs boson scenario in 3HDMs

The measurement of the $B\to X_sγ$ process gives important constraints on physics related to charged Higgs bosons ($H^\pm$). In 2-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) with a softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry, a light $H^\pm$ scenario, in which $H^\pm$ can be produced via the top decay, is possible in two of four types of Yukawa interactions (the so-called Type-I and Type-X). In these types of 2HDMs, the $H^\pm \to τ^\pm ν$ decay mode is dominant in wide regions of the parameter space. In this report, we discuss the other possibility of a light charged Higgs boson scenario in 3-Higgs-Doublet Models (3HDMs) based on the results obtained in Ref. [1]. We show that charged Higgs bosons can mainly decay into $cb$ without contradiction with the $B\to X_sγ$ data and the direct searches for charged Higgs bosons at the LHC, and this scenario cannot be realized in the 2HDMs.

Discriminating Z' signals in semileptonic top pair production at the LHC

We investigate the sensitivity of top pair production to the properties of different Beyond the Standard Model theories embedding a new neutral boson. We include six-fermion decay, and account for the full tree-level Standard Model ttbar interference, with all intermediate particles allowed off-shell. We focus on those observables best suited to the lepton-plus-jets final state at the LHC, and simulate the resulting experimental conditions, including kinematic requirements and top quark pair reconstruction in the presence of missing transverse energy and combinatorial ambiguity in quark-top assignment. In particular, we demonstrate the use of asymmetry observables to probe the coupling structure of a new neutral resonance, in addition to cases in which these asymmetries may even form complementary discovery observables in combination with the differential cross section.

Phenomenology of minimal Z' models: from the LHC to the GUT scale

We consider a class of minimal abelian extensions of the Standard Model with an extra neutral gauge boson $Z'$ at the TeV scale. In these scenarios an extended scalar sector and heavy right-handed neutrinos are naturally envisaged. We present some of their striking signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, the most interesting arising from a $Z'$ decaying to heavy neutrino pairs as well as a heavy scalar decaying to two Standard Model Higgses. Using renormalisation group methods, we characterise the high energy behaviours of these extensions and exploit the constraints imposed by the embedding into a wider GUT scenario.

Electroweak production of light scalar-pseudoscalar pairs from extended Higgs sectors

In models with extended Higgs sectors, it is possible that the Higgs boson discovered at the LHC is not the lightest one. We show that in a realistic model (the Type I 2-Higgs Doublet Model), when the sum of the masses of a light scalar and a pseudoscalar ($h$ and $A$) is smaller than the $Z$ boson mass, the Electroweak (EW) production of an $hA$ pair can dominate over QCD production by orders of magnitude, a fact not previously highlighted. This is because in the $gg$-initiated process, $hA$ production via a resonant $Z$ in the $s$-channel is prohibited according to the Landau-Yang theorem, which is not the case for the $q\bar{q}$-initiated process. We explore the parameter space of the model to highlight regions giving such $hA$ solutions while being consistent with all constraints from collider searches, $b$-physics and EW precision data. We also single out a few benchmark points to discuss their salient features, including the $hA$ search channels that can be exploited at Run II of the LHC.

Charged Higgs Boson Searches at the LHC via Multiple $b\bar bW^\pm$ Final States

We review the prospects of the Large Hadron Collider in accessing heavy charged Higgs boson signals in $b\bar b W^\pm$ final states, wherein the contributing channels can be $H^+\to t\bar b$, $hW^\pm$, $HW^\pm$ and $AW^\pm$. In particular, we devise a selection strategy which optimizes their global yield. We consider a 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type-II and we assume as production mode $bg\to tH^-$ + c.c., the dominant one over the range $M_{H^\pm}\ge 480$ GeV, as dictated by $b\to sγ$ constraints. Possibilities of detection are found to be significant for various Run 2 energies and luminosities.

Review of LHC experimental results on low mass bosons in multi Higgs models

A number of searches at the LHC looking for low mass ($2m_μ - 62\ \mathrm{GeV}$) bosons in $\sqrt{s} = 8\ \mathrm{TeV}$ data have recently been published. We summarise the most pertinent ones, and look at how their limits affect a variety of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models which can give rise to such light bosons: the 2HDM (Types I and II), the NMSSM, and the nMSSM.
