A light NMSSM pseudoscalar Higgs boson at the LHC Run 2

We revisit the light pseudoscalar $A_1$ in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with partial universality at some high unification scale in order to delineate the parameter space regions consistent with up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints and examine to what extent this state can be probed by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during Run 2. We find that it can be accessible through a variety of signatures proceeding via $A_1\to τ^+τ^-$ and/or $b\bar b$, the former assuming hadronic decays and the latter two $b$-tags within a fat jet or two separate slim ones. Herein, the light pseudoscalar state is produced from a heavy Higgs boson decay in either pairs or singly in association with a $Z$ boson (in turn decaying into electrons/muons).

Revisiting a light NMSSM pseudoscalar at the LHC

The discovery of a light, singlet-like pseudoscalar Higgs boson, $A_1$, of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) could provide a hallmark signature of non-minimal supersymmetry. We review here the potential of the LHC to probe such a light $A_1$ in the decays of one of the heavier scalar Higgs bosons of the NMSSM. We find the production of pairs of the $A_1$, with a mass below 60 GeV or so, via decays of the two lightest scalar states to be especially promising, for an integrated luminosity as low as 30/fb. For heavier masses, the decay of the heaviest scalar into a $Z$ boson and an $A_1$ could lead to its detection at the LHC.

A light NMSSM pseudoscalar Higgs boson at the LHC redux

The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) contains a singlet-like pseudoscalar Higgs boson in addition to the doublet-like pseudoscalar of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. This new pseudoscalar can have a very low mass without violating the LEP exclusion constraints and it can potentially provide a hallmark signature of non-minimal supersymmetry at the LHC. In this analysis we revisit the light pseudoscalar in the NMSSM with partial universality at some high unification scale. We delineate the regions of the model's parameter space that are consistent with the up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints, from both Higgs boson searches and elsewhere (most notably $b$-physics), and examine to what extent they can be probed by the LHC. To this end we review the most important production channels of such a Higgs state and assess the scope of its observation at the forthcoming Run-2 of the LHC. We conclude that the $b\bar{b}$-associated production of the pseudoscalar, which has been emphasised in previous studies, does not carry much promise anymore, given the measured mass of the Higgs boson at the LHC. However, the decays of one of the heavier scalar Higgsbosons of the NMSSM can potentially lead to the discovery of its light pseudoscalar. Especially promising are the decays of one or both of the two lightest scalar states into a pseudoscalar pair and of the heaviest scalar into a pseudoscalar and a $Z$ boson. Since the latter channel has not been explored in detail in the literature so far, we provide details of some benchmark points which can be probed for establishing its signature.

Charged Higgs boson in the $W^\pm$ Higgs channel at the Large Hadron Collider

In light of the recent discovery of a neutral Higgs boson, $H_{\rm obs}$, with a mass near 125 GeV, we reassess the LHC discovery potential of a charged Higgs boson, $H^\pm$, in the $W^\pm H_{\rm obs}$ decay channel. This decay channel can be particularly important for a $H^\pm$ heavier than the top quark, when it is produced through the $pp \rightarrow tH^\pm$ process. The knowledge of the mass of $H_{\rm obs}$ provides an additional handle in the kinematic selection when reconstructing a Breit-Wigner resonance in the $H_{\rm obs} \rightarrow b\bar{b}$ decay channel. We consider some extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector, with and without supersymmetry, and perform a dedicated signal-to-background analysis to test the scope of this channel for the LHC running at the design energy (14 TeV), for 300/fb (standard) and 3000/fb (high) integrated luminosities. We find that, while this channel does not show much promise for a supersymmetric $H^\pm$ state, significant portions of the parameter spaces of several two-Higgs doublet models are testable.

Search for Charged Higgs bosons via decays to $W^\pm$ and a 125 GeV Higgs at the Large Hadron Collider

The recent observation of a 125 GeV neutral Higgs boson ($H_{\rm obs}$) provides additional input for charged Higgs boson searches in the $H^\pm \to W^\pm H_{\rm obs}$ decay channel at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We reassess the discovery potential in this channel, which is important for $H^\pm$ heavier than the top quark mass. When $H_{\rm obs}$ decays to a $b\bar{b}$ pair, knowledge of the Higgs mass aids in the kinematic selection of signal events. We perform a signal-to-background analysis to demonstrate the LHC prospects for charged Higgs discovery in the resulting channel $pp\to t(\bar{b})H^-\to \ell^\pmν_\ell jj bb\bar{b}(\bar{b})$+h.c. for standard (300 fb$^{-1}$) and high (3000 fb$^{-1}$) luminosities at design energy, $\sqrt{s}=14 {\rm TeV}$. We find that regions of the parameter space of several two-Higgs doublet models, consistent with constraints from LHC Higgs searches and $b$-physics observables, are testable in this channel.

Constraints on Parameter Space from Perturbative Unitarity in Models with Three Scalar Doublets

We calculate an $s$-wave amplitude matrix for all the possible 2--to--2 body scalar boson elastic scatterings in models with three scalar doublets, including contributions from the longitudinal component of weak gauge bosons via the Equivalence Theorem Approximation. Specifically, we concentrate on the two cases with two[one] active plus one[two] inert doublet fields, referred to as I(1+2)HDM[I(2+1)HDM], under CP conservation. We obtain three analytically irreducible sub-matrices with the $3\times 3$ form and eighteen eigenvalues for the amplitude matrix as an independent set, where the same formula can be applied to both models. By requiring a perturbative unitarity condition, we can constrain the magnitude of quartic coupling constants in the Higgs potential. This constraint, in particular in the I(1+2)HDM, can be translated into a bound on masses of extra active scalar bosons. Furthermore, when Standard Model-like Higgs boson couplings with weak gauge bosons are deviated from the Standard Model predictions, the unitarity condition provides an upper limit on the masses. We find that stronger upper bounds on the masses of the active CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons are obtained under the constraints from the unitarity and vacuum stability conditions, as well as the electroweak $S$, $T$ and $U$ parameters, as compared to those in 2-Higgs Doublet Models with a softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry.

The 125 GeV Higgs signal at the LHC in the CP Violating MSSM

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have observed independently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) a new Higgs-like particle with a mass $M_h \sim$ 125 GeV and properties similar to that predicted by the Standard Model (SM). Although the measurements indicate that this Higgs-like boson is compatible with the SM hypothesis, however due to large uncertainties in some of the Higgs detection channels, one still has the possibility of testing this object as being a candidate for some Beyond the SM (BSM) physics scenarios, for example, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), in the CP-conserving version (CPC-MSSM). In this paper, we evaluate the modifications of these CPC-MSSM results when CP-violating (CPV) phases are turned on explicitly, leading to the CP-violating MSSM (CPV-MSSM). We investigate the role of the CPV phases in (some of) the soft Supersymmetry (SUSY) terms on both the mass of the lightest Higgs boson $h_1$, and the rates for the processes $gg \rightarrow h_1 \rightarrow γγ$, $gg \rightarrow h_1 \rightarrow ZZ^*\rightarrow 4l$, $gg \rightarrow h_1 \rightarrow WW^*\rightarrow l νl ν$, $pp \rightarrow V h_1 \rightarrow V b\bar b$ and $pp \rightarrow V h_1 \rightarrow V τ^+τ^-$, ($V \equiv W^\pm, Z$) at the LHC, considering the impact of the flavor constraints as well as the constraints coming from the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) measurements. We find that the imaginary part of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings can take very small but non-zero values even after satisfying the recent updates from LHC. Our study shows that the CPV-MSSM provides an equally potential solution (like its CP-conserving (CPC) counterpart) to the recent LHC Higgs data. Improvement in different Higgs coupling measurements is necessary in order to test the possibility of probing the small dependence on these CPV phases in the Higgs sector of the MSSM.

Dark Matter with Two Inert Doublets plus One Higgs Doublet

Following the discovery of a Higgs boson, there has been renewed interest in the general 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM). A model with One Inert Doublet plus One Higgs Doublet (I(1+1)HDM), where one of the scalar doublets is "inert" (since it has no vacuum expectation value and does not couple to fermions) has an advantage over the 2HDM since it provides a good Dark Matter (DM) candidate, namely the lightest inert scalar. Motivated by the existence of three fermion families, here we consider a model with two scalar doublets plus one Higgs doublet (I(2+1)HDM), where the two scalar doublets are inert. The I(2+1)HDM has a richer phenomenology than either the I(1+1)HDM or the 2HDM. We discuss the new regions of DM relic density in the I(2+1)HDM with simplified couplings and address the possibility of constraining the model using recent results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and DM direct detection experiments.

Phenomenology of the Inert (2+1) and (4+2) Higgs Doublet Models

We make a phenomenological study of a model with two inert doublets plus one Higgs doublet (I(2+1)HDM) which is symmetric under a Z$_2$ group, preserved after Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) by the vacuum alignment $(0,0,v)$. This model may be regarded as an extension to the model with one inert doublet plus one Higgs doublet (I(1+1)HDM), by the addition of an extra inert scalar doublet. The neutral fields from the two inert doublets provide a viable Dark Matter (DM) candidate which is stabilised by the conserved $Z_2$ symmetry. We study the new Higgs decay channels offered by the scalar fields from the extra doublets and their effect on the Standard Model (SM) Higgs couplings, including a new decay channel into photon(s) plus missing energy, which distinguishes the I(2+1)HDM from the I(1+1)HDM. Motivated by Supersymmetry, which requires an even number of doublets, we then extend this model into a model with four inert doublets plus two Higgs doublets (I(4+2)HDM) and study the phenomenology of the model with the vacuum alignment $(0,0,0,0,v,v)$. This scenario offers a wealth of Higgs signals, the most distinctive ones being cascade decays of heavy Higgs states into inert ones. Finally, we also remark that the smoking-gun signature of all the considered models is represented by invisible Higgs decays into the lightest inert Higgs bosons responsible for DM.

Towards a model-independent approach to the analysis of interference effects in pair production of new heavy quarks

We propose a model independent approach for the analysis of interference effects in the process of QCD pair production of new heavy quarks of different species that decay into Standard Model particles, including decays via flavour changing neutral currents. By adopting as ansatz a simple analytical formula we show that one can accurately describe the interference between two different such particles pairs leading to the same final state using information about masses, total widths and couplings. A study of the effects on differential distributions is also performed showing that, when interference plays a relevant role, the distributions of the full process can be obtained by a simple rescaling of the distributions of either quark contributing to the interference term. We also present the range of validity of the analytical expression that we have found.

Light sfermion interplay in the 125 GeV MSSM Higgs production and decay at the LHC

We study the effects from light sfermions on the lightest Higgs boson production and decay at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that the scenario with light coloured sfermions -- stops or sbottoms -- has the potential to explain a non-universal alteration, as hinted by LHC data, of the gluon-gluon Fusion ($μ_{ggF}$) with respect to the Vector Boson Fusion ($μ_{VBF}$) event rates and, in particular, can predict $\frac{μ_{VBF}}{μ_{ggF}}>1$ for all Higgs boson decay channels in large areas of the parameter space. We also find that the scenario with a light stop/sbottom can be complemented by the scenario in which the total Higgs width, $Γ_{\rm tot}$, is reduced due to a suppressed Yukawa coupling $Y_b$. In this case, the reduction of the Higgs production rates in the $ggF$ process which occurs in the maximal mixing scenario is compensated by the reduction of the $H\to b\bar{b}$ partial decay width, the largest component of $Γ_{\rm tot}$. Furthermore, we highlight the fact that, in the light stop/sbottom scenario, event rates with the Higgs boson decaying to a $b\bar{b}$ final state are predicted to be essentially below unity. Therefore, during the future LHC runs, the measurement of $h\to b\bar{b}$ final states is a matter of special importance. Amongst all viable MSSM configurations that we study (including revisiting a light stau solution), we emphasise most the scenario with a light stop, as the latter is also motivated by Dark Matter and Electro-Weak baryogenesis. We also perform fits of the MSSM against the LHC data, emphasising the fact that in most cases these are better than for the SM.

Future Electron-Positron Colliders and the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model

In this note we analyse the prospects of a future electron-positron collider in testing a particular realisation of a composite Higgs model encompassing partial compositeness, namely, the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model. We study the main Higgs production channels for three possible energy stages and different luminosity options of such a machine and confront our results to the expected experimental accuracies in the various Higgs decay channels accessible herein and, for comparison, also at the Large Hadron Collider.

Three-Higgs-doublet models: symmetries, potentials and Higgs boson masses

We catalogue and study three-Higgs-doublet models in terms of all possible allowed symmetries (continuous and discrete, Abelian and non-Abelian), where such symmetries may be identified as flavour symmetries of quarks and leptons. We analyse the potential in each case, and derive the conditions under which the vacuum alignments (0,0,v), (0,v,v) and (v,v,v) are minima of the potential. For the alignment (0,0,v), relevant for dark matter models, we calculate the corresponding physical Higgs boson mass spectrum. Motivated by supersymmetry, we extend the analysis to the case of three up-type Higgs doublets and three down- type Higgs doublets (six doublets in total). Many of the results are also applicable to flavon models where the three Higgs doublets are replaced by three electroweak singlets.

In particular, we introduce two motivated benchmarks and study them in Higgs-Strahlung, for three possible energy stages and different luminosity options of such a machine and confront our results to the expected experimental accuracies in the various accessible Higgs decay channels.

Z' at the LHC: Interference and Finite Width Effects in Drell-Yan

The interference effects between an extra neutral spin-1 Z'-boson and the Standard Model background in the Drell-Yan channel at the LHC are studied in detail. The final state with two oppositely charged leptons is considered. The interference contribution to the new physics signal, currently not fully taken into account by experimental collaborations in Z'-searches and in the interpretation of the results, can be substantial. It may affect limits or discovery prospects of Z' at the LHC. As the Z'-boson interference is model-dependent, a proper treatment would a priori require a dedicated experimental analysis for each particular model. Doing so could potentially improve the sensitivity to new physics, but would require significantly more experimental effort. At the same time, it is shown that one can define an invariant mass window, valid for a wide range of models, for which the contribution of the model-dependent interference to the Beyond the Standard Model signal is reduced to O(10%), comparable to the level of the combined uncertainty from parton densities and higher order corrections. This quasi-model-independent "magic cut" does not scale with the mass of the Z'-boson and is approximately constant over a large range of masses. Such control of the interference effects relies on not-too-small branching ratios of Z' to leptons (typically of at least a few percent) which can be suppressed, however, by additional new decay channels of the Z'; a small width-to-mass ratio alone does not guarantee the interference to be small over an arbitrary kinematic range. Under the general assumption that these new decay channels of Z' are not dominant, one can perform quasi-model-independent analyses, preserving the current scheme used by the experimental collaborations for the Z'-boson search using the suggested invariant mass window cut.

BSM Physics: What the Higgs Can Tell Us

This discovery of the Higgs boson last year has created new possibilities for testing candidate theories for explaining physics beyond the Standard Model. Here we explain the ways in which new physics can leave its marks in the experimental Higgs data, and how we can use the data to constrain and compare different models. In this proceedings paper we use two models, Minimal Universal Extra Dimensions and the 4D Composite Higgs model, as examples to demonstrate the technique.

Exploring Drell-Yan signals from the 4D Composite Higgs Model at the LHC

We study the phenomenology of Drell-Yan processes at the Large Hadron Collider for the case of both the neutral and charged current channels within a recently proposed 4-Dimensional formulation of the Minimal Composite Higgs Model. We estimate the integrated and differential event rates at the CERN machine, assuming 14 TeV and data samples of ${\cal O}(100 {\rm{fb}}^{-1})$, as at lower energy and/or luminosity event rates are prohibitively small. We pay particular attention to the presence of multiple resonances in either channel, by showing that in certain region of parameter space some of these can be distinguishable and experimentally accessible in the invariant and/or transverse mass distribution, sampled in either the cross section, the forward-backward asymmetry or both. At the same time, we assess the indirect impact onto the line-shape of the emerging gauge boson resonances, both neutral and charged, of additional heavy fermionic states present in the spectrum of the model. Finally, we show how to exploit in the kinematic selection the fact that the extra neutral and charged gauge boson resonances in composite Higgs models are correlated in mass. Such results rely on a parton level study including a statystical error analysis.

The CP-violating type-II 2HDM and Charged Higgs boson benchmarks

We review and update the interpretation of the 125 GeV scalar as the lightest Higgs boson of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, allowing for CP violation in the potential. The detection of a charged Higgs boson would exclude the Standard Model. Proposed benchmarks for charged-Higgs searches in the channel pp\to H^+W^-X\to W^+W^-H_1X are reviewed and updated.
