Search for single vector-like $B$ quark production in hadronic final states at the LHC

In this paper, we study the discovery potential of a Vector-Like $B$ quark (VLB) via the process $pp \to B(\to bZ)j\to b(Z \to ν_l\bar{ν_l})j$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV. In the framework of a simplified model, we perform a scan over its parameter space and test its viability following a Monte Carlo analysis developed to include all production and decay dynamics. We use cut-and-count combined with Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) methods to classify the signal and background events in order to improve the efficiency of signal identification and background rejection. We find that this approach can reduce background events significantly while the signal retention rate is much higher than that of traditional methods, thereby improving the VLB discovery potential. We then calculate the exclusion and discovery capabilities for VLBs and find that the advantages of the cut-and-count plus XGBoost method especially lie in the high-mass region, i.e., $m_B > 1500 \text{ GeV}$. We finally obtain the following LHC results in terms of the coupling and chiral structure of a singlet heavy VLB interactions: (i) for $g^{\ast}$=0.2 and $R_L=0$ with 3000 fb$^{-1}$, the $B$ quark mass can be be excluded (discovered) up to 3000 GeV (2500 GeV); (ii) for $g^{\ast}$=0.2 and $R_L=0.5$ with 3000 fb$^{-1}$, the exclusion (discovery) region can reach up to 4750 GeV (4250 GeV).

Superposition of CP-Even and CP-Odd Higgs Resonances: Explaining the 95 GeV Excesses within a Two-Higgs Doublet Model

We propose an explanation for the observed excesses around 95 GeV in the di-photon and di-tau invariant mass distributions, as reported by the CMS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These findings are complemented by a long-standing discrepancy in the $b\bar{b}$ invariant mass at the Large Electron-Positron (LEP) Collider. Additionally, the ATLAS collaboration has reported a corroborative excess in the di-photon final state within the same mass range, albeit with slightly lower significance. Our approach involves the superposition of CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons within the Type-III Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) to simultaneously explain these excesses at 1$σ$ Confidence Level (C.L.), while remaining consistent with current theoretical and experimental constraints.

hep-aid: A Python Library for Sample Efficient Parameter Scans in Beyond the Standard Model Phenomenology

This paper presents hep-aid, a modular Python library conceived for utilising, implementing, and developing parameter scan algorithms. Originally devised for sample-efficient, multi-objective active search approaches in computationally expensive Beyond Standard Model (BSM) phenomenology, the library currently integrates three Machine Learning (ML)-based approaches: a Constraint Active Search (CAS) algorithm, a multi-objective Active Search (AS) method (called b-CASTOR), and a self-exploration method named Machine Learning Scan (MLScan). These approaches address the challenge of multi-objective optimisation in high-dimensional BSM scenarios by employing surrogate models and strategically exploring parameter spaces to identify regions that satisfy complex objectives with fewer evaluations. Additionally, a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo method using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm (MCMC-MH) is implemented for method comparison. The library also includes a High Energy Physics (HEP) module based on SPheno as the spectrum calculator. However, the library modules and functionalities are designed to be easily extended and used also with other external software for phenomenology. This manual provides an introduction on how to use the main functionalities of hep-aid and describes the design and structure of the library. Demonstrations based on the aforementioned parameter scan methods show that hep-aid methodologies enhance the efficiency of BSM studies, offering a versatile toolset for complex, multi-objective searches for new physics in HEP contexts exploiting advanced ML-based approaches.

Vector-Like Quarks at the LHC: A Unified Perspective from ATLAS and CMS Exclusion Limits

In this work, we present a comprehensive review of the most up-to-date exclusion limits on Vector-Like Quarks (VLQs) derived from ATLAS and CMS data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Our analysis encompasses both pair and single production modes, systematically comparing results from the two collaborations to identify and employ the most stringent bounds at each mass point. We evaluate the excluded parameter space for VLQs under singlet, doublet, and triplet representations. For top-like VLQs ($T$), the exclusion limits rule out masses up to 1.49 TeV in singlet scenarios, while single production constrains the mixing parameter $κ$ to values below 0.26 at $m_T \sim 1.5$ TeV and up to 0.42 for $m_T \sim 2$ TeV. For bottom-like VLQs ($B$), the strongest exclusion limits from pair production exclude masses up to 1.52 TeV in doublet configurations, with single production constraining $κ$ values between 0.2 and 0.7 depending on the mass. For exotic VLQs, such as $X$ and $Y$, pair production excludes masses up to 1.46 TeV and 1.7 TeV, respectively. The constraints on $κ$ from these analyses become increasingly restrictive at higher masses, reflecting the enhanced sensitivity of single production channels in this regime. For $X$, $κ$ is constrained below 0.16 for masses between 0.8 and 1.6 TeV and further tightens to $κ< 0.2$ as the mass approaches 1.8 TeV. Similarly, for $Y$, $κ$ values are constrained below 0.26 around $m_Y \sim 1.7$ TeV, with exclusions gradually relaxing at higher masses. These exclusion regions, derived from the most stringent LHC search results, offer a unified and up-to-date perspective on VLQ phenomenology. The results were computed using \texttt{VLQBounds}, a new Python-based tool specifically developed for this purpose.

Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model: Strong Effects on Higgs Pair Production

We show how effects of compositeness emerging in a Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model can enter Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs pair production at the Large Hadron Collider in both resonant and non-resonant mode. Such effects can arise from modified trilinear Higgs self-couplings and top-Yukawa couplings as well as from loops of new heavy quarks and additional quartic Higgs-fermion interactions. In the resonant case, significant distortions of the Breit- Wigner shape of a new scalar state decaying into the two SM-like Higgs states may occur due to interference effects amongst not only the SM-like diagrams but also those involving the new heavy quarks. In the non-resonant case, a modification of the underlying line-shape and a local maximum at twice a new heavy quark mass appear simultaneously. We quantify these effects by taking into account the relevant theoretical and latest experimental bounds.

Enhanced Four-Body Decays of Charged Higgs Bosons into Off-Shell Pseudoscalar Higgs and $W^\pm$ Boson Pairs in a Lepton-Specific 2-Higgs Doublet Model

We study the time-honoured decay $H^\pm\to A W^\pm$ but for the first time, we do so for the case of both $A$ and $W^\pm$ being off-shell, therefore computing a $1\to 4$ body decay. We show that the corresponding decay rate not only extends the reach of $H^\pm$ searches to small masses of the latter but also that the results of our implementation differ significantly from the yield of the $1\to3$ body decay over the phase space region in which the latter is normally used. We show the phenomenological relevance of this implementation in the case of the so-called lepton-specific 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) over the mass region wherein the aforementioned $1\to 4$ body decay can dominate just beyond the top (anti)quark mass. This mass region is accessible in the lepton-specific 2HDM as the Yukawa couplings are such that limits from $b \to s γ$ and $τ\to μν_τ \bar{ν_μ}$ observables on $M_{H^\pm}$ are rather mild. However, we emphasise that similar effects may occur in other 2HDM types, as the $W^\pm H^\mp A$ vertex is 2HDM type independent.

Anatomy of Vector-Like Bottom-Quark Models in the Alignment Limit of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type-II

Expanding upon our ongoing investigation of Vector-Like Quark (VLQ) phenomenology within a 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) framework, in this paper, we complement a previous one dedicated to Vector-Like Top-quarks (VLTs) by studying Vector-Like Bottom-quarks (VLBs), specifically focusing on their behavior in the alignment limit of a Type-II Yukawa structure. We examine the potential for detecting VLBs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and analyze their decay signatures, encompassing both Standard Model (SM) processes and exotic decays. The objective is to differentiate among singlet, doublet, and triplet configurations of VLBs by identifying distinct decay patterns, thereby providing insights into the structure of Beyond the SM (BSM) physics.

$4b + X$ via electroweak multi-Higgs production as smoking gun signals for Type-I 2HDM at the LHC

Extending the Standard Model (SM) by one additional Higgs doublet leads to the Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). A specific charge assignment of the SM fermions under the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry leads to the Type-I 2HDM. A key feature of the Type-I 2HDM is that all the additional Higgs bosons can be fermiophobic, when their couplings to the SM fermions are suppressed. As a result, all the new Higgs states can be fairly light, $\sim$100 GeV or less, without being in conflict with the current data from the direct Higgs boson searches and the $B$-physics measurements. In a recent study Ref.~\cite{Mondal:2023wib}, which this proceeding is based on, we established that the new neutral as well as the charged Higgs bosons in this model can all be simultaneously observable in the multi-$b$ final state. An experimental validation of our results would be a clear indication that the true underlying Higgs sector in nature is the Type-I 2HDM.

Large Hadron Collider Signatures of Exotic Vector-Like Quarks within the 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type-II

We study the decay of the exotic Vector-Like Quarks (VLQs) $X$ and $Y$, with $5/3$ and $-4/3$ units of electric charge, respectively, within the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). Building on our previous studies of Vector-Like Top and Bottom (VLT and VLB) quarks, we now investigate the characteristics of $X$ and $Y$ in the alignment limit of a Type-II Yukawa structure and show that, in the framework of such a 2HDM, one can have large non-Standard Model (SM) decay rates of the $X$ and$ Y$ states. Our analysis focuses on their potential detection at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), based on their pair production followed by a variety of both SM and non-SM decay patterns. In order to distinguish between doublet and triplet representations of the VLQs $X$ and $Y$, we uncover specific signatures that can provide insights into this particular architecture of Beyond the SM (BSM) physics.

Charged Higgs Boson Mass Bounds in 2HDM-II: Impact of Vector-Like Quarks

We explore the phenomenology of charged Higgs bosons ($H^\pm$) and Vector-Like Quarks (VLQs), specifically the top-like $T$, within the Two Higgs Doublet Model Type-II (2HDM-II). We consider both a singlet VLQ $(T)$ and a doublet $(TB)$ scenario, demonstrating that the presence of VLQs influences the scalar sector, particularly by alleviating the stringent mass constraints on $H^\pm$ imposed by $B$-physics observables such as $B\to X_sγ$. This relaxation arises from modifications in the couplings between $H^\pm$ and Standard Model (SM) quarks, with the magnitude of the effect differing between the singlet and doublet cases. We further analyse the constraints from the oblique parameters $S$ and $T$ on VLQ mixing angles.

On the CP Properties of Spin-0 Dark Matter

Aiming to uncover the CP properties of spin-0 particle Dark Matter (DM), we explore a two-component DM scenario within the framework of 3-Higgs Doublet Models (3HDMs), a well-motivated set-up previously studied due to the complementarity of its collider and astrophysical probes. We devise benchmark points in which the two components of DM have same CP in one case and opposite CP in another. We then show several cross section distributions of observables at collider experiments where the two cases are clearly distinguishable.

Single production of an exotic vector-like $Y$ quark at future high energy $pp$ colliders

Vector-like quarks have been predicted in various new physics scenarios beyond the Standard Model (SM). In a simplified modelling of a $(B,Y)$ doublet including a vector-like quark $Y$, with charge $-\frac{4}{3}$e, there are only two free parameters: the $Y$ coupling $κ_{Y}$ and mass $m_Y$. In the five flavor scheme, we investigate the single production of the $Y$ state decaying into $Wb$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Run-III and High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) operating at $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV, the possible High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC) with $\sqrt{s}$ = 27 TeV as well as the Future Circular Collider in hadron-hadron mode (FCC-hh) with $\sqrt{s}$ = 100 TeV. Through detailed signal-to-background analyses and detector simulations, we assess the exclusion capabilities of the $Y$ state at the different colliders. We find that this can be improved significantly with increasing collision energy, especially at the HE-LHC and FCC-hh, both demonstrating an obvious advantage with respect to the HL-LHC in the case of high $m_Y$. Assuming a 10\% systematic uncertainty on the background event rate, the exclusion capabilities are summarized as follows: (1) the LHC Run-III can exclude the correlated regions of $κ_{Y} \in [0.06,0.5]$ and $m_{Y} \in [1500\text{ GeV},3800\text{ GeV}]$ with integrated luminosity $L = 300\text{ fb}^{-1}$; (2) the HL-LHC can exclude the correlated regions of $κ_{Y} \in [0.05,0.5]$ and $m_{Y} \in [1500\text{ GeV},3970\text{ GeV}]$ with $L = 3$ ab$^{-1}$; (3) the HE-LHC can exclude the correlated regions of $κ_Y \in [0.06,0.5]$ and $m_{Y} \in [1500\text{ GeV} , 6090\text{ GeV}]$ with $L = 3$ ab$^{-1}$; (4) the FCC-hh can exclude the correlated regions of $κ_{Y} \in [0.08,0.5]$ and $m_{Y} \in [1500\text{ GeV} , 10080\text{ GeV}]$ with $L = 3$ ab$^{-1}$.

Explanation of the Hints for a 95 GeV Higgs Boson within a 2-Higgs Doublet Model

We suggest an explanation for and explore the consequences of the excess around 95 GeV in the di-photon and di-tau invariant mass distributions recently reported by the CMS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), together with the discrepancy that has long been observed at the Large Electron-Positron (LEP) collider in the $b\bar b$ invariant mass. Interestingly, the most recent findings announced by the ATLAS collaboration do not contradict, or even support, these intriguing observations. Their search in the di-photon final state similarly reveals an excess of events within the same mass range, albeit with a bit lower significance, thereby corroborating and somewhat reinforcing the observations made by CMS. We demonstrate that the lightest CP-even Higgs boson in the general 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-III can explain simultaneously the observed excesses at approximately 1.3 $σ$ C.L. while satisfying up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints. Moreover, the 2HDM Type-III predicts an excess in the $pp\to t\bar t H_{\rm SM}$ production channel of the 125 GeV Higgs boson, $H_{\rm SM}$. This effect is caused by a up to 12\% enhancement of the $H_{\rm SM}tt$ Yukawa coupling in comparison to that predicted by the Standard Model. Such an effect can be tested at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which can either discover or exclude the scenario we suggest. This unique characteristic of the 2HDM Type-III makes this scenario with the 95 GeV resonance very attractive for further theoretical and experimental investigations at the (HL-)LHC and future colliders.

NMSSM Explanation for Excesses in the Search for Neutralinos and Charginos and a 95 GeV Higgs Boson

The observed excesses in the search for neutralinos and charginos by ATLAS and CMS can be fitted simultaneously in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) assuming a light higgsino mass, of magnitude less than about 250 GeV, and a compressed higgsino dominated neutralino and chargino spectrum, with $5-10\%$ mass splittings. However, light higgsinos as dark matter would have far too large direct detection cross sections. We consider the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM) with an additional singlino-like lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) a few GeV below the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). Sparticles prefer to decay first into the NLSP and remnants from the final decay into the LSP are too soft to contribute to the observed signals. Co-annihilation in the higgsino-sector can generate a relic density in the WMAP/Planck window. The singlino-like LSP has automatically a direct detection cross section below present and future sensitivities: a direct detection signal in the near future would exclude this scenario. The singlet-like Higgs scalar of the NMSSM can have a mass around 95 GeV and signal cross sections in the $b\bar{b}$ channel at LEP and in the $γγ$ channel at the LHC compatible with the respective observations.

Desirability and social rankings

In coalitional games, a player $i$ is regarded as strictly more desirable than player $j$ if substituting $j$ with $i$ within any coalition leads to a strict augmentation in the value of certain coalitions, while preserving the value of the others. We adopt a property-driven approach to 'integrate' the notion of the desirability relation into a total relation by establishing sets of independent axioms leading to the characterization of solutionconcepts from the related literature. We focus on social ranking solutions consistent with the desirability relation and propose complementary sets of properties for the axiomatic characterization of five existing solutions: Ceteris Paribus (CP-)majority, lexicographic excellence (lex-cel), dual-lex, $L^{(1)}$ solution and its dual version $L^{(1)}_{*}$ . These characterizations reveal additional similarities among the five solutions and emphasize the essential characteristics that should be taken into account when selecting a social ranking. A practical scenario involving a bicameral legislature is studied.

Probing Charged Higgs Bosons in the 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type-II with Vector-Like Quarks

We study the phenomenology of charged Higgs bosons ($H^\pm$) and Vector-Like Quarks (VLQs), denoted as $T$, the latter possessing a charge identical to the top quark one, within the framework of the Two Higgs Doublet Model Type-II (2HDM-II). Upon examining two scenarios, one featuring a singlet $(T)$ (2HDM-II+$(T)$) and another a doublet $(TB)$ (2HDM-II+$(TB)$), we discover that the presence of VLQs has a significant effect on the (pseudo)scalar sector of the 2HDM-II. In particular, this leads to a reduction in the strict constraint on the mass of the charged Higgs boson, which is imposed by $B$-physics observables, specifically $B\to X_sγ$. {The observed reduction stems from modifications in the charged Higgs couplings to the Standard Model (SM) top and bottom quarks}. Notably, the degree of this reduction varies distinctly between the singlet 2HDM+$(T)$ and doublet 2HDM+$(TB)$ scenarios. Additionally, our investigation extends to constraints imposed by the oblique parameters $S$ and $T$ on the VLQ mixing angles. Furthermore, to facilitate efficient exploration of the '2HDM-II+VLQ' parameter space, we present results on pair production of VLQs $T$ ($pp\to T\bar T$), followed by $T\to H^\pm b$ and $H^\pm \to tb$ decays, yielding a distinctive $2t4b$ final state. This investigation thus provides valuable insights guiding the search for extended Higgs and quark sectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.

A novel search strategy for right-handed charged gauge bosons at the Large Hadron Collider

We explore the potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in detecting a signal originating from the production of a heavy $SU(2)_R$ charged gauge boson that then decays into a top-bottom quark pair via the mediation of a right-handed neutrino, $p p \to W_R \to N_R \ell \to (\ell' t b)\ell$. Such a channel, that we study in the context of the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model, contrasts with conventional smoking-gun signatures targeted experimentally and phenomenologically in which only light quarks are involved. We propose a selection strategy aimed at extracting such a top-bottom signal and we estimate the resulting sensitivity of the LHC to the model. Our results demonstrate the potential impact of such a search and we therefore urge the experimental collaborations to carry out a similar analysis in the light of present and future data.

JetLOV: Enhancing Jet Tree Tagging through Neural Network Learning of Optimal LundNet Variables

Machine learning has played a pivotal role in advancing physics, with deep learning notably contributing to solving complex classification problems such as jet tagging in the field of jet physics. In this experiment, we aim to harness the full potential of neural networks while acknowledging that, at times, we may lose sight of the underlying physics governing these models. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that we can achieve remarkable results obscuring physics knowledge and relying completely on the model's outcome. We introduce JetLOV, a composite comprising two models: a straightforward multilayer perceptron (MLP) and the well-established LundNet. Our study reveals that we can attain comparable jet tagging performance without relying on the pre-computed LundNet variables. Instead, we allow the network to autonomously learn an entirely new set of variables, devoid of a priori knowledge of the underlying physics. These findings hold promise, particularly in addressing the issue of model dependence, which can be mitigated through generalization and training on diverse data sets.
