Voyage Across the 2HDM Type-II with Magellan

We review the status of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-II, in the light of the current experimental results and various theoretical consistency conditions. In doing so, we adopt a new numerical framework, called Magellan, to explore the full parameter space of the model. Magellan uses a simple, Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique for the exploration and leverages the use of modern tools, allowing the user to perform inference on the model in an efficient way. The framework exploits the output of well-known Higgs production and decay programs, together with that of packages implementing the current results of both direct and indirect Higgs boson searches. We further illustrate how future measurements can be incorporated in such a framework, through the example of neutral heavy Higgs boson production and decay via the gluon-gluon fusion mode in a variety of final states.

Enhancing the Large Hadron Collider Sensitivity to Charged and Neutral Broad Resonances of New Gauge Sectors

In scenarios beyond the Standard Model (BSM) characterized by charged ($W^\prime$) or neutral ($Z^\prime$) massive gauge bosons with large width, resonant mass searches are not very effective, so that one has to exploit the tails of the mass distributions measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this case, the LHC sensitivity to new physics signals is influenced significantly by systematic uncertainties associated with the Parton Distribution Functions (PDF), particularly in the valence quark sector relevant for the multi-TeV mass region. As a BSM framework featuring such conditions, we consider the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model (4DCHM), in which multiple $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ broad resonances are present, with strongly correlated properties. By using the QCD tool xFitter, we study the implications on $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ searches in Drell-Yan (DY) lepton decay channels that follow from the reduction of PDF uncertainties obtained through combining high-statistics precision measurements of DY lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries. We find that the sensitivity to the BSM states is greatly increased with respect to the case of base PDF sets, thereby enabling one to set more stringent limits on (or indeed discover) such new particles, both independently and in correlated searches.

Complementary collider and astrophysical probes of multi-component Dark Matter

We study a new physics scenario with two inert and one active scalar doublets, hence a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM). We impose a $Z_2 \times Z'_2$ symmetry onto such a 3HDM with one inert doublet odd under the $Z_2$ transformation and the other odd under the $Z'_2$ one. Such a construction leads to a two-component Dark Matter (DM) model. It has been shown that, when there is a sufficient mass difference between the two DM candidates, it is possible to probe the light DM candidate in the nuclear recoil energy in direct detection experiments and the heavy DM component in the photon flux in indirect detection experiments. With the DM masses at the electroweak scale, we show that, independently of astrophysical probes, this model feature can be tested at the Large Hadron Collider via scalar cascade decays in $2 \ell + \cancel{E}_T$ final states. We study several observable distributions whose shapes hint at the presence of the two different DM candidates.

Slight excess at 130 GeV in search for a charged Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark and a bottom quark at the Large Hadron Collider

Searches for a charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) decaying to a charm quark and a bottom quark ($H^\pm \to cb$) have been carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the decay of top quarks ($t\to H^\pm b$). In a recent search by the ATLAS collaboration (with all Run II data, 139 fb$^{-1}$) a local excess of around $3σ$ has been observed, which is best fitted by a charged Higgs boson with a mass ($m_{H^\pm}$) of around 130 GeV and a product of branching ratios (BRs) given by BR$(t\to H^\pm b)\times{\rm BR}(H^\pm\to cb)=0.16\%\pm 0.06\%$. In the context of Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM) with independent Yukawa couplings for $H^\pm$ we present the parameter space for which this excess (assuming it to be genuine) can be accommodated, taking into account the limits from LHC searches for $H^\pm\to cs$ and $H^\pm\to τν$ at $m_{H^\pm}$=130 GeV and the constraint from $b\to sγ$. It is then shown that such an excess cannot be explained in 2HDMs with natural flavour conservation, but can be accommodated in the flipped Three-Higgs-Doublet Model (3HDM) and in the aligned 2HDM (A2HDM). Upcoming searches with 139 fb$^{-1}$ in the channels $H^\pm\to cb$ (CMS), $H^\pm \to cs$ (ATLAS/CMS) and $H^\pm \to τν$ (ATLAS/CMS) will determine if the excess is the first sign of an $H^\pm$ with $m_{H^\pm}=130$ GeV.

A combined approach to the analysis of space and ground experimental data within a simplified E6SSM

Within the Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (E6SSM), we investigate striking signatures at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for a long-lived charged inert higgsino, which is degenerate with the inert neutralino at tree level and a mass splitting of order O(0.3) GeV is generated at the loop level, resulting in a lifetime of order O(0.02) nanoseconds. We focus on the most sensitive search for long-lived charged inert higgsino decays to the lightest neutral inert higgsino Dark Matter (DM) and very soft charged leptons, which are eventually stopped in the detector resulting in a disappearing-track signal. Furthermore, we study the displaced vertex signature of the inert chargino in the case where it is produced via the Z' portal. We illustrate how difficult it is to construct displaced vertices in this class of models, though some evidence of these could be gained at the High Luminosity LHC. Finally, we compare the spin independent and spin dependent cross sections of the lightest inert higgsino DM to those of current direct detection experiments, proving that it is possible to gain sensitivity to the active DM component of this scenario in the near future. The combination of these signatures with the one emerging from Z' production and decay via Drell-Yan, which can be characterised as belonging to the E6SSM via both the cross section and Forward-Backward Asymmetry, could point uniquely to this non-minimal realisation of supersymmetry. In fact, we remark that these evidences of the E6SSM can also be correlated to the features of standard SUSY cascades in terms of the amount of missing transverse energy present therein.

The muon $g-2$ in an Aligned 2-Higgs Doublet Model with Right-Handed Neutrinos

In this note, we show how one can attribute the anomaly currently present in the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ($a_μ$) to the presence of an underlying Aligned 2-Higgs Doublet Model (A2HDM) with Right-Handed (RH) neutrinos, $ν_R$. The effects of the latter scenario are driven by one and two-loop topologies wherein a very light CP-odd neutral Higgs state ($A$) contributes significantly to $a_μ$. Over the region of parameter space of our new physics model which explains the aforementioned anomaly, also consistent with the most recent measurements of the electron anomalous magnetic moment ($a_e$), wherein the charged Higgs state $H^\pm$ plays a similar role, we predict an almost background-free hallmark signature of it, due to $H^\pm A$ production followed by Higgs boson decays yielding multi-$τ$ final states, which can be already be searched for at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Measuring neutrino dynamics in NMSSM with a right-handed sneutrino LSP at the ILC

We study the possibility of measuring neutrino Yukawa couplings in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with right-handed neutrinos (NMSSMr) when the lightest right-handed sneutrino is the Dark Matter (DM) candidate, by exploiting a `dijet + dilepton + Missing Transverse Energy' signature. We show that, contrary to the miminal realisation of Supersymmetry (SUSY), the MSSM, wherein the DM candidate is typically a much heavier (fermionic) neutralino state, this extended model of SUSY offers one with a much lighter (bosonic) state as DM that can then be produced at the next generation of $e^+e^-$ colliders with energies up to 500 GeV or so. The ensuing signal, energing from chargino pair production and subsequent decay, is extremely pure so it also affords one with the possibility of extracting the Yukawa parameters of the (s)neutrino sector. Altogether, our results serve the purpose of motivating searches for light DM signals at such machines, where the DM candidate can have a mass around the electroweak scale.

CP-Violation in the 3-Higgs Doublet Model: CP-Asymmetries from Charged Higgs Bosons and Electric Dipole Moments

We propose a CP-violating source in the charged Higgs sector of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) that will contribute to three CP-asymmetry observables for low energy processes. In the context of such a 3HDM, a measurement of one of the specific asymmetry observables (i.e., $\bar{B} \to X_{s+d} γ$) could obtain up to 2.5% or more, which would give a 5$σ$ evidence for physics Beyond the SM (BSM) from the full BELLE II data set. In addition to these CP-violating observables, the current measurements of Electron Dipole Moments (EDMs) constrain the available parameter region of the CP-violating 3HDM. In this work, we perform a thorough analysis of the parameter space of it to find the regions that satisfy EDMs, $\bar{B} \to X_s γ$, direct collider searches for charged Higgs bosons as well as theoretical bounds.

New Light $H^\pm$ Discovery Channels at the LHC

A light charged Higgs boson has been searched for at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via top (anti)quark decay, i.e., $t \to b H^+$, if kinematically allowed. In this contribution, we propose new channels for light charged Higgs boson searches via the pair productions $pp\to H^\pm h/A$ and $pp\to H^+ H^-$ at the LHC in the context of the Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-I. By focusing on a case where the heavy H state is the Standard Model (SM)-like one already observed, we investigate the production of the aforementioned charged Higgs bosons and their bosonic decay channels, namely, $H^\pm \to W^\pm h$ and/or $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$. We demonstrate that such production and decay channels can yield substantial alternative discovery channels for $H^\pm$ bosons at the LHC. Finally, we propose eight benchmark points (BPs) to motivate the search for such signatures.

Cross-fertilising extra gauge boson searches at the LHC

For the purpose of cross-fertilising currently separate experimental approaches, we connect results of LHC analyses attempting to access the properties of additional $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ bosons from Drell-Yan processes. Under theoretical assumptions linking the two new gauge bosons, we take into account that such possible states of nature are wide enough (in relation to the leptonic mass resolution) for the corresponding signals be significantly affected by interference effects with the background from the Standard Model. The shape of the differential cross section may then no longer be a standard Breit-Wigner distribution, and asymmetry observables would become useful for characterisation (and, possibly, discovery) purposes. Under such conditions we concentrate our analysis on specific widely-studied models: the Sequential Standard Model, a model with an additional $SU(2)_L$ gauge symmetry, as well as standard and alternative realisations of the Left-Right Symmetric Model. We show how information gathered in $Z'$ boson searches in terms of cross section and/or asymmetry distributions can be used to improve $W'$ boson searches in terms of the LHC sensitivity, and {\it vice versa}.

CP-Violation in a Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model

We study CP-Violation (CPV) in a Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model (C2HDM) based on the global symmetry breaking $SO(6)/[SO(4)\times SO(2)]$, wherein the strong sector is modeled by a two-site moose structure. Non-trivial complex phases in the interactions involving fermions in both the elementary and strong sectors can induce CPV in the Higgs potential as well as the Yukawa coupling parameters. We compute both of the latter and analyse their dependence upon the aforementioned complex phases. Finally, we discuss physics observables which are distinctive of this model. Even in the simplest case with only one complex phase in the strong sector we can get significant CPV effects.

Monophoton signals in electron-positron colliders in a simplified E6SSM

The mono-photon signature emerging in an E6 Supersymmetric Standard Model (E6SSM) from inert higgsino Dark Matter (DM) is analyzed at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. As the inert neutral and charged higgsinos are nearly degenerate, the inert chargino is a rather long lived particle and the charged particle associated with its decay to the inert higgsino is quite soft. We show that the pair production of inert charginos at a 500 GeV electron-positron collider with an initial or final state photon is the most promising channel for probing the inert higgsino as one DM candidate within the E6SSM. We also emphasize that this signal has no chance of being observed at the Large Hadron Collider with higher energy and/or luminosity. Finally, we remark that, combined with a DM signal produced in Direct Detection experiments involving an active higgsino state as the second DM candidate, this dual evidence could point to a two-component DM version of the E6SSM.

Complementarity of Lepton-Charge and Forward-Backward Drell-Yan Asymmetries for Precision Electroweak Measurements and Quark Density Determinations

We address the impact of future measurements of charged and neutral current Drell-Yan (DY) asymmetries and their combination on Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) uncertainties. We quantify the reduction of PDF uncertainties using the QCD tool xFitter. We examine the effects of such reduced PDF errors on both Standard Model (SM) and Beyond SM (BSM) observables.

CP violation from charged Higgs bosons in the three Higgs doublet model

We demonstrate a new type of cancellation of contributions to the electron and neutron electric dipole moments (EDMs) that occurs in three Higgs doublet models (3HDMs) when CP violation appears in the charged Higgs sector. The cancellation becomes exact when the two physical charged Higgs bosons in the model are degenerate in mass. Depending on the model parameters, degeneracies at the 10\% level are however sufficient to evade current bounds on the electron and neutron EDMs. We demonstrate that viable parameter space remains with both charged Higgs bosons lighter than 500 GeV and large CP-violating phases while also satisfying theoretical constraints from perturbativity and experimental ones from $\bar{B} \to X_s γ$ and direct searches.

Lepton-Charge and Forward-Backward Asymmetries in Drell-Yan Processes for Precision Electroweak Measurements and New Physics Searches

Precision determinations of Standard Model (SM) Electro-Weak (EW) parameters at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are dominated by uncertainties due to Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). Reweighting and profiling techniques are routinely employed to treat this. We explore approaches based on combining measurements of charged current and neutral current Drell-Yan (DY) asymmetries to improve PDF uncertainties. We present the results of a numerical analysis performed with the open-source platform xFitter. PDF uncertainties are examined for lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries in regions of transverse and invariant masses near the vector-boson peak, based on LHC Run III and HL-LHC luminosity scenarios. We discuss the complementarity of the asymmetries in reducing PDF uncertainties in observables relevant to both SM and Beyond the SM (BSM) physics.

Extraction of neutrino Yukawa parameters from displaced vertices of sneutrinos

We study displaced signatures of sneutrino pairs potentially emerging at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model supplemented with right-handed neutrinos triggering a Type-I seesaw mechanism. We show how such signatures can be established through a heavy Higgs portal in the presence of both leptonic and hadronic decays of the sneutrinos. We finally illustrate how the Yukawa parameters of the latter can be extracted from fitting kinematical quantities pertaining to the corresponding two displaced vertices, thereby characterising the dynamics of the underlying mechanism of neutrino mass generation. We show our numerical results for the case of both the current and High-Luminosity LHC.

Discovering the Origin of Yukawa Couplings at the LHC with a Singlet Higgs and Vector-like Quarks

Although the 125 GeV Higgs boson discovered at the LHC is often heralded as the origin of mass, it may not in fact be the origin of Yukawa couplings. In alternative models, Yukawa couplings may instead arise from a seesaw type mechanism involving the mixing of Standard Model (SM) chiral fermions with new vector-like fermions, controlled by the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a new complex Higgs singlet field $\langle Φ\rangle$. For example, the largest third family $(t,b)$ quark Yukawa couplings may be forbidden by a $U(1)'$ gauge or global symmetry, broken by $\langle Φ\rangle$, and generated effectively via mixing with a vector-like fourth family quark doublet $(T,B)$. Such theories predict a new physical Higgs singlet $ϕ$, which we refer to as the Yukon, resulting from $\langle Φ\rangle$, in the same way that the Higgs boson $h^0$ results from $\langle H\rangle$. In a simplified model we discuss the prospects for discovering the Yukon $ϕ$ in gluon-gluon fusion production, with $(t,b)$ and $(T,B)$ quarks in the loops, and decaying in the channels $ϕ\rightarrow γγ, Zγ$ and $ϕ\rightarrow tT\rightarrow tth^0,ttZ$. The potential for discovery of the Yukon $ϕ$ is studied at present or future hadron colliders such as the LHC (Run 3), HL-LHC, HE-LHC and/or FCC. For example, we find that a 300-350 GeV Yukon $ϕ$ could be accessed at LHC Run 3 in the di-photon channel in the global model, providing a smoking gun signature of the origin of Yukawa couplings. The $tth^0,ttZ$ channels are more involved and warrant a more sophisticated analysis.

Quantum interference effects in Higgs boson pair-production beyond the Standard Model

New physics frameworks like the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and the Next-to-2-Higgs-doublet Model contain three neutral CP-even Higgs bosons. It is possible for the heavier two of these states to have masses identical to each other, which can result in a sizeable quantum interference between their propagators in processes they mediate. For both these models, we study the impact of such interference on the pair-production of the lightest of the three scalars, which we identify with the observed 125 GeV Higgs boson, in the gluon-fusion channel at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find that the inclusion of these effects can substantially alter the cross section, compared to its value when they are ignored, for this process. Our results illustrate the importance of taking possible quantum interference effects into account not only when investigating the phenomenology of extended Higgs sectors at the future Run(s) of the LHC, but also when imposing its current exclusion bounds on the parameter spaces of these models.
