A Guidebook to Hunting Charged Higgs Bosons at the LHC

We perform a comprehensive global analysis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) as well as in the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) of the production and decay mechanisms of charged Higgs bosons $(H^\pm)$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Starting from the most recent experimental results (SM-like Higgs boson signal strengths and search limits for new Higgs boson states obtained at Run-1 and -2 of the LHC and previous colliders), from (both direct and indirect) searches for Supersymmetric particles as well as from flavor observables (from both $e^+e^-$ factories and hadron colliders) and upon enforcing theoretical constraints (vacuum stability, perturbativity, unitarity), we present precise predictions for $H^\pm$ cross sections and decay rates in different reference scenarios of the two aforementioned models in terms of the parameter space currently available, specifically mapped over the customary $(m_{A,H^\pm}, \tanβ)$ planes, including singling out specific Benchmark Points (BPs) amenable to phenomenological investigation. These include the $m_{h}^{{\rm mo}d+}$ and hMSSM configurations of the MSSM and the 2HDM Type-I, -II, -X and -Y. Such BPs are always close to (or coinciding with) the best fits of the theoretical scenarios to experimental data. We also briefly discuss the ensuing phenomenology for the purpose of aiding future searches for such charged Higgs boson states.

Scattering Interference effects on $H^+\to t\bar b$ Signals in MSSM Benchmark Scenarios

In this talk an investigation into the interference effects between the process $pp\to \bar{t}bH^+$ followed by the decay $H^+ \to t\bar{b}$ and the background process $pp \to t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ is presented. The level of interference in parts of the parameter space is shown to be high and as such it may spoil the results of typical analyses which treat signal and background as independent. This is shown for two benchmarks of the MSSM.

Exploring neutrino physics through sneutrinos

Supersymmetry relates neutrinos with their superpartners, sneutrinos. Unlike neutrinos, sneutrinos may decay visibly in colliders. We discuss how we could get information from neutrino Yukawa couplings in the NMSSM extended with right-handed neutrinos, if the right-handed sneutrinos are within the reach of the colliders.

Lepton number violation in heavy Higgs decays to sneutrinos

We study the possibility of observing lepton number violation in the right-handed sneutrino sector of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model extended with right-handed neutrinos. The scalar potential introduces a lepton number violating mass term for the right-handed sneutrinos, which generates a phase difference that results in oscillations between the sneutrino and antisneutrino. If we have light higgsinos and right-handed sneutrinos, the sneutrino decay width is determined by the tiny Yukawa couplings, which allows the phase difference to accumulate before the sneutrino decays. We investigate the possibilities of producing sneutrino pairs resonantly through a heavy Higgs of such a model and the ability of seeing a lepton number violating signature emerging from sneutrinos at the Large Hadron Collider. We also discuss how a possible future signal of this type could be used to determine the neutrino Yukawa couplings.

A Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model

In the context of Composite Higgs Models we consider the realisation of an extended Higgs sector with two Higgs doublets arising as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons from a $\textrm{SO}(6) \to \textrm{SO}(4) \times \textrm{SO}(2)$ breaking. The properties of the Higgses are obtained in terms of the fundamental parameters of the composite sector, such as masses, Yukawa and gauge couplings of the new spin-1/2 and spin-1 resonances. After computing the Higgs potential from the explicit breaking of the $\textrm{SO}(6)$ global symmetry by the partial compositeness of fermions and gauge bosons, the main focus is to derive the phenomenological properties of the Higgs bosons and to highlight the main signatures of the Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model at the Large Hadron Collider, including modifications to the SM-like Higgs couplings, production and decay channels of heavier Higgs states.

PDF Profiling Using the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in Neutral Current Drell-Yan Production

Non-perturbative QCD effects from Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) may be constrained by using high-statistics Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. Drell-Yan (DY) measurements in the Charged Current (CC) case provide one of the primary means to do this, in the form of the lepton charge asymmetry. We investigate here the impact of measurements in Neutral Current (NC) DY data mapped onto the Forward-Backward Asymmetry ($A_{\rm FB}$) on PDF determinations, by using the open source fit platform {\tt{xFitter}}. We demonstrate the potential impact of $A_{\rm FB}$ data on PDF determinations and perform a thorough analysis of related uncertainties.

Explaining Dijet Mass Excesses in ALEPH LEP2 Four-Jet Events with 2HDMs

In this paper, we address the observability of four-jet signatures from light neutral and charged Higgs bosons at LEP2 energies in the framework of 2-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs). The main signal production channels are via $e^+ e^- \to Ah$ and $H^+ H^-$ with subsequent quark decays of such final states into four-jets. Specifically, Type-I and -III realizations of a generic 2HDM (2HDM-I and -III, respectively) are adopted to show that there exist points (under the assumption that the heavy Higgs state $H$ is SM-like) for which $(m_h, m_A, m_{H^\pm}) \approx (80, 30, 55)$ GeV that can yield observable rates at LEP2 energies that can potentially explain the di-jet mass excesses seen recently in ALEPH data in a re-analysis of their four-jet samples, particularly so for the 2HDM-III.

Light charged Higgs boson with dominant decay to a charm quark and a bottom quark and its search at LEP2 and future $e^+e^-$ colliders

The possibility of a light charged Higgs boson $H^\pm$ that decays predominantly to $cb$ and with a mass in the range 80 GeV $\le M_{H^\pm} \le 90$ GeV is studied in the context of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM). Searches for this decay at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) do not have sensitivity to this mass region at present. It is shown that the searches for $H^\pm$ at LEP2 could be supplemented by either one or two $b$-tags, which would enable such large branching ratios for $H^\pm\to cb$ to be probed in the above mass region. We comment on the possibility of this 3HDM scenario to explain a slight excess in the searches for $H^\pm$ at LEP2, which is best fit by $M_{H^\pm}$ of around 90 GeV, and discuss the prospects for detecting $H^\pm \to cb$ decays at future $e^+e^-$ colliders.

Dark Matter Signals at the LHC from a 3HDM

We analyse new signals of Dark Matter (DM) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) where only one doublet acquires a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), preserving a parity $Z_2$. The other two doublets are inert and do not develop a VEV, leading to a dark scalar sector controlled by $Z_2$, with the lightest CP-even dark scalar $H_1$ being the DM candidate. This leads to the loop induced decay of the next-to-lightest scalar, $H_2\to H_1\bar{f}f$ ($f=u,d,c,s,b,e,μ,τ$), mediated by both dark CP-odd and charged scalars. This is a smoking-gun signal of the 3HDM since it is not allowed in the 2HDM with one inert doublet and is expected to be important when $H_2$ and $H_1$ are close in mass. In practice, this signature can be observed in the cascade decay of the SM-like Higgs boson, $h\to H_1H_2\to H_1H_1\bar{f}f$ into two DM particles and di-leptons/di-jets, where $h$ is produced from either gluon-gluon Fusion (ggF) or Vector Boson Fusion (VBF).

We study the impact of the inclusion of Neutral Current (NC) DY data from LHC mapped in the Forward-Backward Asymmetry ($A_{\rm FB}$) observable on PDF uncertainties, using the open source platform \texttt{xFitter}. We find that $A_{\rm FB}$ enables new PDF sensitivity at current and future luminosity stages of LHC.

Search for single production of a top quark partner via the $T\to th$ and $h\to WW^{\ast}$ channels at the LHC

Many scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model that address the hierarchy problem also predict the existence of vector-like top quark partners, which are generally expected around the TeV scale. In this paper, we propose to search for a vector-like top quark partner with charge $2/3$ in a simplified model including only two free parameters, the coupling constant $g^{\ast}$ and top quark partner mass $m_T$. We investigate the observability of the top quark partner through the process $pp \to T(\to th)j\to t(\to b W^+\to b \ell^{+} ν_{\ell})h( \to WW^{\ast}\to \ell^{+}ν\ell^{-}\barν) j$, where $T$ is the heavy top quark partner and $h$ the SM-like Higgs boson, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The discovery prospects and exclusion limits on the parameter plane defined by ($m_T,g^{\ast}$) are obtained for the already scheduled LHC runs as well as at the future High-Luminosity~LHC (HL-LHC). The constraints and projected sensitivities are also interpreted in a realistic model, i.e., the minimal Composite Higgs Model with singlet top quark partners. We finally also analyze the projected sensitivity in terms of the production cross section times branching fraction at the (HL-)LHC.

Electroweak production of multiple (pseudo)scalars in the 2HDM

The two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is the most minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) containing extra Higgs doublet fields. Given the multiplicity of Higgs states in a 2HDM, its Higgs potential is significantly more involved than the SM one. Importantly, it contains a multitude of Higgs triple self-couplings, unlike the SM, which only has one. These interactions are key to understanding the phenomenology of the 2HDM, as they uniquely determine the form of the potential. Several studies analysing the prospects of measuring these couplings at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have found them to be quite low generally. However, such studies have largely concentrated on Higgs pair-production induced by gluon-gluon scattering, either via direct annihilation or followed by their splitting into $b$-(anti)quark pairs, which in turn annihilate leaving behind spectator $b$-(anti)quarks. Both of these channels are therefore governed by QCD dynamics. We compare here the yields of such channels to those initiated by (primarily) valence quarks, which involve Electro-Weak (EW) interactions only, for neutral multi-Higgs final states. We find that EW production can be dominant over QCD production for certain final state combinations. We also illustrate that charged final states, which can only be produced via EW modes, could serve as important probes of some $H^\pm$ triple couplings, that are inaccessible in QCD-induced processes, during Run 2 and 3 of the LHC. Our analysis covers regions of the parameter space of the Type-I 2HDM that have escaped the most up-to-date experimental constraints coming from EW precision data, LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson properties, searches for additional Higgs states, and flavour physics.

New Physics Suggested by Atomki Anomaly

We consider several extensions of the Standard Model (SM) which can explain the anomalies observed by the Atomki collaboration in the decay of excited states of Beryllium via a new boson with a mass around 17 MeV yielding $e^+e^-$ pairs. We show how both spin-0 and 1 solutions are possible and describe the Beyond the SM (BSM) scenarios that can accommodate these. They include BSM frameworks with either an enlarged Higgs, or gauge sector, or both.

${}^8$Be Decay Anomaly and Light $Z'$

In this proceedings, we discuss a light (17 MeV) $Z'$ solution to the anomaly observed in the decay of Beryllium-8 by the Atomki collaboration. We detail an anomaly free model with minimal particle content which can satisfy all other experimental constraints with gauge couplings $\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$.

Searching for Heavy Charged Higgs Bosons through Top Quark Polarization

We study the production of a heavy charged Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in $gb\to H^{-} t$ within a Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). The chiral structure of the $H^{-} t \bar{b}$ coupling can trigger a particular spin state of the top quark produced in the decay of a charged Higgs boson and, therefore, is sensitive to the underlying mechanism of the Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB). Taking two benchmark models (2HDM type-I and 2HDM type-Y) as an example, we show that inclusive rates, differential distributions as well as forward-backward asymmetries of the top quark's decay products can be used to search for heavy charged Higgs bosons as well as a model discriminators.

Neutral Current Forward-Backward Asymmetry: from $θ_W$ to PDF Determinations

Measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in neutral-current Drell-Yan di-lepton production have primarily been used for determinations of the weak mixing angle $θ_W$. We observe that, unlike the case of Run-I of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC Run-I), for the first time at the LHC Run-II the reconstructed forward-backward asymmetry has the capability of placing useful constraints on the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). By examining the statistical and the PDF uncertainties on the reconstructed forward-backward asymmetry, we investigate its potential for disentangling the flavour content of quark and antiquark PDFs. Access to the valence/sea $u$-quark and to the sea up-type antiquark PDFs, in particular, may be gained by the appropriate use of selection cuts in the rapidity of the emerging lepton pair in regions both near the $Z$-boson peak and away from it, in a manner complementary, though more indirect, to the case of the charged-current asymmetry. We study the extension of these results for the planned high-luminosity (HL) LHC.

Long-Lived Particles at the Energy Frontier: The MATHUSLA Physics Case

We examine the theoretical motivations for long-lived particle (LLP) signals at the LHC in a comprehensive survey of Standard Model (SM) extensions. LLPs are a common prediction of a wide range of theories that address unsolved fundamental mysteries such as naturalness, dark matter, baryogenesis and neutrino masses, and represent a natural and generic possibility for physics beyond the SM (BSM). In most cases the LLP lifetime can be treated as a free parameter from the $μ$m scale up to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit of $\sim 10^7$m. Neutral LLPs with lifetimes above $\sim$ 100m are particularly difficult to probe, as the sensitivity of the LHC main detectors is limited by challenging backgrounds, triggers, and small acceptances. MATHUSLA is a proposal for a minimally instrumented, large-volume surface detector near ATLAS or CMS. It would search for neutral LLPs produced in HL-LHC collisions by reconstructing displaced vertices (DVs) in a low-background environment, extending the sensitivity of the main detectors by orders of magnitude in the long-lifetime regime. In this white paper we study the LLP physics opportunities afforded by a MATHUSLA-like detector at the HL-LHC. We develop a model-independent approach to describe the sensitivity of MATHUSLA to BSM LLP signals, and compare it to DV and missing energy searches at ATLAS or CMS. We then explore the BSM motivations for LLPs in considerable detail, presenting a large number of new sensitivity studies. While our discussion is especially oriented towards the long-lifetime regime at MATHUSLA, this survey underlines the importance of a varied LLP search program at the LHC in general. By synthesizing these results into a general discussion of the top-down and bottom-up motivations for LLP searches, it is our aim to demonstrate the exceptional strength and breadth of the physics case for the construction of the MATHUSLA detector.

Signatures of the Type-I 2HDM at the LHC

One of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model (SM) is the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM), which contains two neutral Higgs bosons, in addition to a 125 GeV one, and a charged pair. At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), gluon-induced processes are generally the most important modes for the resonant production of the SM-like Higgs boson as well as its pair-production, and it is generally considered to be the case also for an additional neutral Higgs boson possibly existing in nature. We show that for certain parameter configurations in the Type-I 2HDM, electroweak pair-production of the neutral Higgs states can dominate over the QCD-initiated production. Moreover, it is possible for the pair-production of the charged Higgs state along with a neutral one, which can only take place electroweakly, to have a substantial cross section. We delineate such 2HDM parameter space regions through its comprehensive numerical scanning, requiring their consistency with the most relevant theoretical and experimental constraints. We also highlight some specific di-Higgs signatures that can be probed at the LHC in order to establish the Type-I 2HDM as the underlying new physics model.
