Quasi-Static Large Deviations

We consider the symmetric simple exclusion with open boundaries that are in contact with particle reservoirs at different densities. The reservoir densities changes at a slower time scale with respect to the natural time scale the system reaches the stationary state. This gives rise to the quasi static hydrodynamic limit proven in [10]. We study here the large deviations with respect to this limit for the particle density field and the total current. We identify explicitely the large deviation functional and prove that it satisfies a fluctuation relation.

A note on Fick's law with phase transitions

We characterize the non equilibrium stationary states in two classes of systems where phase transitions are present. We prove that the interface in the limit is a plane which separates the two phases.

Diffusion limit for a kinetic equation with a thermostatted interface

We consider a linear phonon Boltzmann equation with a reflecting/transmitting/absorbing interface. This equation appears as the Boltzmann-Grad limit for the energy density function of a harmonic chain of oscillators with inter-particle stochastic scattering in the presence of a heat bath at temperature $T$ in contact with one oscillator at the origin. We prove that under the diffusive scaling the solutions of the phonon equation tend to the solution $ρ(t,y)$ of a heat equation with the boundary condition $ρ(t,0)\equiv T$.

Exceedingly Large Deviations of the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process

Consider the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) on the integer lattice $ \mathbb{Z} $. We study the functional Large Deviations of the integrated current $ \mathsf{h}(t,x) $ under the hyperbolic scaling of space and time by $ N $, i.e., $ \mathsf{h}_N(t,ξ) := \frac{1}{N}\mathsf{h}(Nt,Nξ) $. As hinted by the asymmetry in the upper- and lower-tail large deviations of the exponential Last Passage Percolation, the TASEP exhibits two types of deviations. One type of deviations occur with probability $ \exp(-O(N)) $, referred to as speed-$ N $; while the other with probability $ \exp(-O(N^{2})) $, referred to as speed-$ N^2 $. In this work we study the speed-$ N^2 $ functional LDP of the TASEP, and establishes (non-matching) large deviation upper and lower bounds.

Hydrodynamic limit for a disordered harmonic chain

We consider a one-dimensional unpinned chain of harmonic oscillators with random masses. We prove that after hyperbolic scaling of space and time the distributions of the elongation, momentum and energy converge to the solution of the Euler equations. Anderson localization decouples the mechanical modes from the thermal modes, allowing the closure of the energy conservation equation even out of thermal equilibrium. This example shows that the derivation of Euler equations rests primarily on scales separation and not on ergodicity. Furthermore, it follows from our proof that the temperature profile does not evolve in any space-time scale.

Transport of a quantum particle in a time-dependent white-noise potential

We show that a quantum particle in $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $d \geq 1$, subject to a white-noise potential, moves super-ballistically in the sense that the mean square displacement $\int \|x\|^2 \langle ρ(x,x,t) \rangle ~dx$ grows like $t^{3}$ in any dimension. The white noise potential is Gaussian distributed with an arbitrary spatial correlation function and a delta correlation function in time. This is a known result in one dimension (see refs. Fischer, Leschke, Müller and Javannar, Kumar}. The energy of the system is also shown to increase linearly in time. We also prove that for the same white-noise potential model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for $d \geq 1$, the mean square displacement is diffusive growing like $t^{1}$. This behavior on the lattice is consistent with the diffusive behavior observed for similar models in the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with a time-dependent Markovian potential (see ref. Kang, Schenker).

High frequency limit for a chain of harmonic oscillators with a point Langevin thermostat

We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat at the origin. In the high frequency limit, we establish the reflection-transmission coefficients for the wave energy for the scattering of the thermostat. To our surprise, even though the thermostat fluctuations are time-dependent, the scattering does not couple wave energy at various frequencies.

Macroscopic evolution of mechanical and thermal energy in a harmonic chain with random flip of velocities

We consider an unpinned chain of harmonic oscillators with periodic boundary conditions, whose dynamics is perturbed by a random flip of the sign of the velocities. The dynamics conserves the total volume (or elongation) and the total energy of the system. We prove that in a diffusive space-time scaling limit the profiles corresponding to the two conserved quantities converge to the solution of a diffusive system of differential equations. While the elongation follows a simple autonomous linear diffusive equation, the evolution of the energy depends on the gradient of the square of the elongation.

Convergence rates for nonequilibrium Langevin dynamics

We study the exponential convergence to the stationary state for nonequilibrium Langevin dynamics, by a perturbative approach based on hypocoercive techniques developed for equilibrium Langevin dynamics. The Hamiltonian and overdamped limits (corresponding respectively to frictions going to zero or infinity) are carefully investigated. In particular, the maximal magnitude of admissible perturbations are quantified as a function of the friction. Numerical results based on a Galerkin discretization of the generator of the dynamics confirm the theoretical lower bounds on the spectral gap.

Ensemble dependence of fluctuations and the canonical/micro-canonical equivalence of ensembles

We study the equivalence of microcanonical and canonical ensembles in continuous systems, in the sense of the convergence of the corresponding Gibbs measures. This is obtained by proving a local central limit theorem and a local large deviations principle. As an application we prove a formula due to Lebowitz-Percus-Verlet. It gives mean square fluctuations of an extensive observable, like the kinetic energy, in a classical micro canonical ensemble at fixed energy.

Non-equilibrium isothermal transformations in a temperature gradient from a microscopic dynamics

We consider a chain of anharmonic oscillators immersed in a heat bath with a temperature gradient and a time varying tension applied to one end of the chain while the other side is fixed to a point. We prove that under diffusive space-time rescaling the volume strain distribution of the chain evolves following a non-linear diffusive equation. The stationary states of the dynamics are of non-equilibrium and have a positive entropy production, so the classical relative entropy methods cannot be used. We develop new estimates based on entropic hypocoercivity, that allows to control the distribution of the positions configurations of the chain. The macroscopic limit can be used to model isothermal thermodynamic transformations between non-equilibrium stationary states.

Pathwise estimates for an effective dynamics

Starting from the overdamped Langevin dynamics in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $$ dX_t = -\nabla V(X_t) dt + \sqrt{2 β^{-1}} dW_t, $$ we consider a scalar Markov process $ξ_t$ which approximates the dynamics of the first component $X^1_t$. In the previous work [F. Legoll, T. Lelievre, Nonlinearity 2010], the fact that $(ξ_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is a good approximation of $(X^1_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is proven in terms of time marginals, under assumptions quantifying the timescale separation between the first component and the other components of $X_t$. Here, we prove an upper bound on the trajectorial error $\mathbb{E} \left( \sup_{0 \leq t \leq T} \left| X^1_t - ξ_t \right| \right)$, for any $T > 0$, under a similar set of assumptions. We also show that the technique of proof can be used to obtain quantitative averaging results.

Diffusive Propagation of Energy in a Non-Acoustic Chain

We consider a non acoustic chain of harmonic oscillators with the dynamics perturbed by a random local exchange of momentum, such that energy and momentum are conserved. The macroscopic limits of the energy density, momentum and the curvature (or bending) of the chain satisfy a system of evolution equations}. We prove that, in a diffusive space-time scaling, the curvature and momentum evolve following a linear system that corresponds to a damped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. The macroscopic energy density evolves following a non linear diffusive equation. In particular the energy transfer is diffusive in this dynamics. This provides a first rigorous example of a normal diffusion of energy in a one dimensional dynamics that conserves the momentum.

Thermal conductivity in harmonic lattices with random collisions

We review recent rigorous mathematical results about the macroscopic behaviour of harmonic chains with the dynamics perturbed by a random exchange of velocities between nearest neighbor particles. The random exchange models the effects of nonlinearities of anharmonic chains and the resulting dynamics have similar macroscopic behaviour. In particular there is a superdiffusion of energy for unpinned acoustic chains. The corresponding evolution of the temperature profile is governed by a fractional heat equation. In non-acoustic chains we have normal diffusivity, even if momentum is conserved.

Ballistic and superdiffusive scales in macroscopic evolution of a chain of oscillators

We consider a one dimensional infinite acoustic chain of harmonic oscillators whose dynamics is perturbed by a random exchange of velocities, such that the energy and momentum of the chain are conserved. Consequently, the evolution of the system has only three conserved quantities: volume, momentum and energy. We show the existence of two space--time scales on which the en- ergy of the system evolves. On the hyperbolic scale (t$ε$--1,x$ε$--1) the limits of the conserved quantities satisfy a Euler system of equa- tions, while the thermal part of the energy macroscopic profile re- mains stationary. Thermal energy starts evolving at a longer time scale, corresponding to the superdiffusive scaling (t$ε$--3/2, x$ε$--1) and follows a fractional heat equation. We also prove the diffusive scal- ing limit of the Riemann invariants - the so called normal modes, corresponding to the linear hyperbolic propagation.

Diffusive scaling in energy ginzburg-Landau dynamics

Ginzburg-Landau energy models arise as autonomous sto-chastic dynamics for the energies in coupled systems after a weak coupling limit (cf. [3, 6]). We prove here that, under certain conditions, the energy fluctuations of these stochastic dynamics are driven by the heat equation, under a diffusive space time scaling.

Quasi-static hydrodynamic limits

We consider hydrodynamic limits of interacting particles systems with open boundaries, where the exterior parameters change in a time scale slower than the typical relaxation time scale. The limit deterministic profiles evolve quasi-statically. These limits define rigorously the thermodynamic quasi static transformations also for transition between non-equilibrium stationary states. We study first the case of the symmetric simple exclusion, where duality can be used, and then we use relative entropy methods to extend to other models like zero range systems. Finally we consider a chain of anharmonic oscillators in contact with a thermal Langevin bath with a temperature gradient and a slowly varying tension applied to one end.

Superdiffusion of energy in a chain of harmonic oscillators with noise

We consider a one dimensional infinite chain of har- monic oscillators whose dynamics is perturbed by a stochastic term conserving energy and momentum. We prove that in the unpinned case the macroscopic evolution of the energy converges to a fractional diffusion. For a pinned system we prove that energy evolves diffusively, generalizing some of the results of [4].
