Failure of the Ryll-Nardzewski theorem on the CAR algebra

Spreadability of a sequence of random variables is a distributional symmetry that is implemented by suitable actions of $\mathbb{J}_\mathbb{Z}$, the unital semigroup of strictly increasing maps on $\mathbb{Z}$ with cofinite range. We show that $\mathbb{J}_\mathbb{Z}$ is left amenable but not right amenable, although it does admit a right Folner sequence. This enables us to prove that on the CAR algebra ${\rm CAR}(\mathbb{Z})$ there exist spreadable states that fail to be exchangeable. Moreover, we also show that on ${\rm CAR}(\mathbb{Z})$there exist stationary states that fail to be spreadable.

On truncated $t$-free Fock spaces: spectrum of position operators and shift-invariant states

The ergodic properties of the shift on both full and $m$-truncated $t$-free $C^*$-algebras are analyzed. In particular, the shift is shown to be uniquely ergodic with respect to the fixed-point algebra. In addition, for every $m\geq 1$, the invariant states of the shift acting on the $m$-truncated $t$-free $C^*$-algebra are shown to yield a $m+1$-dimensional Choquet simplex, which collapses to a segment in the full case. Finally, the spectrum of the position operators on the $m$-truncated $t$-free Fock space is also determined.

Tail algebras for monotone and $q$-deformed exchangeable stochastic processes

We compute the tail algebras of exchangeable monotone stochastic processes. This allows us to prove the analogue of de Finetti's theorem for this type of processes. In addition, since the vacuum state on the $q$-deformed $C^*$-algebra is the only exchangeable state when $|q|<1$, we draw our attention to its tail algebra, which turns out to obey a zero-one law.

On the monotone $C^*$-algebra

The concrete monotone $C^*$-algebra, that is the (unital) $C^*$-algebra generated by monotone independent algebraic random variables of Bernoulli type, is characterized abstractly in terms of generators and relations and is shown to be UHF. Moreover, its Bratteli diagram is explicitly given, which allows for the computation of its $K$-theory.

de Finetti-type theorems on quasi-local algebras and infinite Fermi tensor products

Local actions of $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$, the group of finite permutations on $\mathbb{N}$, on quasi-local algebras are defined and proved to be $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$-abelian. It turns out that invariant states under local actions are automatically even, and extreme invariant states are strongly clustering. Tail algebras of invariant states are shown to obey a form of the Hewitt and Savage theorem, in that they coincide with the fixed-point von Neumann algebra. Infinite graded tensor products of $C^*$-algebras, which include the CAR algebra, are then addressed as particular examples of quasi-local algebras acted upon $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$ in a natural way. Extreme invariant states are characterized as infinite products of a single even state, and a de Finetti theorem is established. Finally, infinite products of factorial even states are shown to be factorial by applying a twisted version of the tensor product commutation theorem, which is also derived here.

Using Shor's algorithm on near term Quantum computers: a reduced version

Considering its relevance in the field of cryptography, integer factorization is a prominent application where Quantum computers are expected to have a substantial impact. Thanks to Shor's algorithm this peculiar problem can be solved in polynomial time. However, both the number of qubits and applied gates detrimentally affect the ability to run a particular quantum circuit on the near term Quantum hardware. In this work, we help addressing both these problems by introducing a reduced version of Shor's algorithm that proposes a step forward in increasing the range of numbers that can be factorized on noisy Quantum devices. The implementation presented in this work is general and does not use any assumptions on the number to factor. In particular, we have found noteworthy results in most cases, often being able to factor the given number with only one iteration of the proposed algorithm. Finally, comparing the original quantum algorithm with our version on simulator, the outcomes are identical for some of the numbers considered.

On the entropy and index of the winding endomorphisms of p-adic ring C$^*$-algebras

For $p\geq 2$, the $p$-adic ring $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{Q}_p$ is the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a unitary $U$ and an isometry $S_p$ such that $S_pU=U^pS_p$ and $\sum_{l=0}^{p-1}U^lS_pS_p^*U^{-l}=1$. For any $k$ coprime with $p$ we define an endomorphism $χ_k\in{\rm End}(\mathcal{Q}_p)$ by setting $χ_k(U):=U^k$ and $χ_k(S_p):=S_p$. We then compute the entropy of $χ_k$, which turns out to be $\log |k|$. Finally, for selected values of $k$ we also compute the Watatani index of $χ_k$ showing that the entropy is the natural logarithm of the index.

On $C^*$-norms on $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded tensor products

We systematically investigate $C^*$-norms on the algebraic graded product of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded $C^*$-algebras. This requires to single out the notion of a compatible norm, that is a norm with respect to which the product grading is bounded. We then focus on the spatial norm proving that it is minimal among all compatible $C^*$-norms. To this end, we first show that commutative $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded $C^*$-algebras enjoy a nuclearity property in the category of graded $C^*$-algebras. In addition, we provide a characterization of the extreme even states of a given graded $C^*$-algebra in terms of their restriction to its even part.

Ergodic properties of the Anzai skew-product for the noncommutative torus

We provide a systematic study of a noncommutative extension of the classical Anzai skew-product for the cartesian product of two copies of the unit circle to the noncommutative 2-tori. In particular, some relevant ergodic properties are proved for these quantum dynamical systems, extending the corresponding ones enjoyed by the classical Anzai skew-product. As an application, for a uniquely ergodic Anzai skew-product $\F$ on the noncommutative $2$-torus $\ba_\a$, $\a\in\br$, we investigate the pointwise limit, $\lim_{n\to+\infty}\frac1{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}ł^{-k}\F^k(x)$, for $x\in\ba_\a$ and $ł$ a point in the unit circle, and show that there exist examples for which the limit does not exist even in the weak topology.

Comparison between the Cauchy problem and the scattering problem for the Landau damping in the Vlasov-HMF equation

We analyze the analytic Landau damping problem for the Vlasov-HMF equation, by fixing the asymptotic behavior of the solution. We use a new method for this "scattering problem", closer to the one used for the Cauchy problem. In this way we are able to compare the two results, emphasizing the different influence of the plasma echoes in the two approaches. In particular, we prove a non-perturbative result for the scattering problem.

Mean-field limit for particle systems with topological interactions

The mean-field limit for systems of self-propelled agents with topological interaction cannot be obtained by means of the usual Dobrushin approach. We get a result on this direction by adapting to the multidimensional case the techniques developed by Trocheris in 1986 to treat the Vlasov-Poisson equation in one dimension.

Spectral and ergodic properties of completely positive maps and decoherence

In an attempt to propose more general conditions for decoherence to occur, we study spectral and ergodic properties of unital, completely positive maps on not necessarily unital $C^*$-algebras, with a particular focus on gapped maps for which the transient portion of the arising dynamical system can be separated from the persistent one. After some general results, we first devote our attention to the abelian case by investigating the unital $*$-endomorphisms of, in general non-unital, $C^*$-algebras, and their spectral structure. The finite dimensional case is also investigated in detail, and examples are provided of unital completely positive maps for which the persistent part of the associated dynamical system is equipped with the new product making it a $C^*$-algebra, and the map under consideration restricts to a unital $*$-automorphism for this new $C^*$-structure, thus generating a conservative dynamics on that persistent part.

Invariant Conditional Expectations and Unique Ergodicity for Anzai Skew-Products

Anzai skew-products are shown to be uniquely ergodic with respect to the fixed-point subalgebra if and only if there is a unique conditional expectation onto such a subalgebra which is invariant under the dynamics. For the particular case of skew-products, this solves a question raised by B. Abadie and K. Dykema in the wider context of $C^*$-dynamical systems.

On the cyclic automorphism of the Cuntz algebra and its fixed-point algebra

We investigate the structure of the fixed-point algebra of $\mathcal{O}_n$ under the action of the cyclic permutation of the generating isometries. We prove that it is $*$-isomorphic with $\mathcal{O}_n$, thus generalizing a result of Choi and Latrémolière on $\mathcal{O}_2$. As an application of the technique employed, we also describe the fixed-point algebra of $\mathcal{O}_{2n}$ under the exchange automorphism.

Skew-product dynamical systems for crossed product $C^*$-algebras and their ergodic properties

Starting from a discrete $C^*$-dynamical system $(\mathfrak{A}, θ, ω_o)$, we define and study most of the main ergodic properties of the crossed product $C^*$-dynamical system $(\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}, Φ_{θ, u},\om_o\circ E)$, $E:\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}\rightarrow\ga$ being the canonical conditional expectation of $\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}$ onto $\mathfrak{A}$, provided $\a\in\aut(\ga)$ commute with the $*$-automorphism $þ$ up tu a unitary $u\in\ga$. Here, $Φ_{θ, u}\in\aut(\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z})$ can be considered as the fully noncommutative generalisation of the celebrated skew-product defined by H. Anzai for the product of two tori in the classical case.

Redox-tunable structural colour images based on UV-patterned conducting polymers

Precise manipulation of light-matter interaction has enabled a wide variety of approaches to create bright and vivid structural colours. Techniques utilizing photonic crystals, Fabry-Pérot cavities, plasmonics, or high-refractive index dielectric metasurfaces have been studied for applications ranging from optical coatings to reflective displays. However, complicated fabrication procedures for sub-wavelength nanostructures, limited active areas, and inherent absence of tunability with these approaches significantly impede their further developments towards flexible, large-scale, and switchable devices compatible with facile and cost-effective production. Herein, we present a way to generate structural colours based on conducting polymer thin films prepared on metallic surfaces via vapour phase polymerization and ultraviolet (UV) light patterning. Varying the UV dose leads to synergistic variation of film absorption and thickness, which generates controllable colours from violet to red. Together with greyscale photomasks this enables fabrication of high-resolution colour images using single exposure steps. We further demonstrate spatiotemporal tuning of the structurally coloured surfaces and images via electrochemical modulation of the polymer redox state. The simple structure, facile fabrication, wide colour gamut, and dynamic colour tuning make this concept competitive for future multi-functional and smart displays.

Local iterative block-diagonalization of gapped Hamiltonians: a new tool in singular perturbation theory

In this paper the local iterative Lie-Schwinger block-diagonalization method, introduced in [FP], [DFPR1], and [DFPR2] for quantum chains, is extended to higher-dimensional quantum lattice systems with Hamiltonians that can be written as the sum of an unperturbed gapped operator, consisting of a sum of on-site terms, and a perturbation consisting of bounded interaction potentials of short range mutltiplied by a real coupling constant t. Our goal is to prove that the spectral gap above the ground-state energy of such Hamiltonians persists for sufficiently small values of |t|, independently of the size of the lattice. New ideas and concepts are necessary to extend our method to systems in dimension d > 1: As in our earlier work, a sequence of local block-diagonalization steps based on judiciously chosen unitary conjugations of the original Hamiltonian is introduced. The supports of effective interaction potentials generated in the course of these block-diagonalization steps can be identified with what we call minimal rectangles contained in the lattice, a concept that serves to tackle combinatorial problems that arise in the course of iterating the block-diagonalization steps. For a given minimal rectangle, control of the effective interaction potentials generated in each block-diagonalization step with support in the given rectangle is achieved by exploiting a variety of rather subtle mechanisms which include, for example, the use of weighted sums of paths consisting of overlapping rectangles and of large denominators, expressed in terms of sums of orthogonal projections, that serve to control analogous sums of projections in the numerators resulting from the unitary conjugations of the interaction potential terms involved in the local block-diagonalization step.

Cardiac kinematic parameters computed from video of $\textit{in situ}$ beating heart

Mechanical function of the heart during open-chest cardiac surgery is exclusively monitored by echocardiographic techniques. However, little is known about local kinematics, particularly for the reperfused regions after ischemic events. We report a novel imaging modality, which extracts local and global kinematic parameters from videos of $\textit{in situ}$ beating hearts, displaying live video cardiograms of the contraction events. A custom algorithm tracked the movement of a video marker positioned $\textit{ad hoc}$ onto a selected area and analyzed, during the entire recording, the contraction trajectory, displacement, velocity, acceleration, kinetic energy and force. Moreover, global epicardial velocity and vorticity were analyzed by means of Particle Image Velocimetry tool. We validated our new technique by i) computational modeling of cardiac ischemia, ii) video recordings of ischemic/reperfused rat hearts, iii) videos of beating human hearts before and after coronary artery bypass graft, and iv) local Frank-Starling effect. In rats, we observed a decrement of kinematic parameters during acute ischemia and a significant increment in the same region after reperfusion. We detected similar behavior in operated patients. This modality adds important functional values on cardiac outcomes and supports the intervention in a contact-free and non-invasive mode. Moreover, it does not require particular operator-dependent skills.
