Self-Supervised ConvLSTM for Fermi Large Area Telescope Transient Detection

We present a framework for detecting transient gamma-ray phenomena in a controlled environment by combining end-to-end simulations of the Fermi-LAT sky with self-supervised spatio-temporal deep learning. We generate a ten-year synthetic Universe with gtobssim and process the simulated events into daily all-sky maps of counts and exposure, obtaining a time-ordered sequence that mirrors the structure of Fermi-LAT observations. To model the nominal evolution of the sky, we employ a Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) network that operates directly on map sequences, preserving spatial locality while learning temporal dependencies. The model is trained to reconstruct expected emission, and departures from the learned baseline are quantified through pixel-wise mean-squared residual maps. We then define statistically motivated anomaly criteria by estimating per-pixel thresholds from the residual distribution on the training set, and we enforce spatial coherence via local filtering to suppress isolated fluctuations. The ConvLSTM is then deployed as trained predictor on Fermi-LAT daily maps, where the sky can depart from the nominal behavior because of genuine astrophysical variability and instrumental non-stationarities. The resulting pipeline flags localized, time-dependent excesses consistent with high-variable sources or transient events (e.g., flares or GRBs) and provides a benchmark for evaluating anomaly-detection strategies on long-duration, Fermi-LAT-like datasets.

Real-Time Oil Leakage Detection on Aftermarket Motorcycle Damping System with Convolutional Neural Networks

In this work, we describe in detail how Deep Learning and Computer Vision can help to detect fault events of the AirTender system, an aftermarket motorcycle damping system component. One of the most effective ways to monitor the AirTender functioning is to look for oil stains on its surface. Starting from real-time images, AirTender is first detected in the motorbike suspension system, simulated indoor, and then, a binary classifier determines whether AirTender is spilling oil or not. The detection is made with the help of the Yolo5 architecture, whereas the classification is carried out with the help of a suitably designed Convolutional Neural Network, OilNet40. In order to detect oil leaks more clearly, we dilute the oil in AirTender with a fluorescent dye with an excitation wavelength peak of approximately 390 nm. AirTender is then illuminated with suitable UV LEDs. The whole system is an attempt to design a low-cost detection setup. An on-board device, such as a mini-computer, is placed near the suspension system and connected to a full hd camera framing AirTender. The on-board device, through our Neural Network algorithm, is then able to localize and classify AirTender as normally functioning (non-leak image) or anomaly (leak image).

R\&D evaluation methodology based on group-AHP with uncertainty

In this paper, we present an approach to evaluate Research \& Development (R\&D) performance based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Through a set of questionnaires submitted to a team of experts, we single out a set of indicators needed for R\&D performance evaluation. The indicators, together with the corresponding criteria, form the basic hierarchical structure of the AHP method. The numerical values associated with all the indicators are then used to assign a score to a given R\&D project. In order to aggregate consistently the values taken on by the different indicators, we operate on them so that they are mapped to dimensionless quantities lying in a unit interval. This is achieved by employing the empirical Cumulative Density Function (CDF) for each of the indicators. We give a thorough discussion on how to assign a score to an R\&D project along with the corresponding uncertainty due to possible inconsistencies of the decision process. A particular example of R\&D performance is finally considered.

Solving Sensor Placement Problems In Real Water Distribution Networks Using Adiabatic Quantum Computation

Quantum annealing has emerged in the last few years as a promising quantum computing approach to solving large-scale combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, we formulate the problem of correctly placing pressure sensors on a Water Distribution Network (WDN) as a combinatorial optimization problem in the form of a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) or Ising model. Optimal sensor placement is indeed key to detect and isolate fault events. We outline the QUBO and Ising formulations for the sensor placement problem starting from the network topology and few other features. We present a detailed procedure to solve the problem by minimizing its Hamiltonian using PyQUBO, an open-source Python Library. We then apply our methods to the case of a real Water Distribution Network. Both simulated annealing and a hybrid quantum-classical approach on a D-Wave machine are employed.

New AdS$_2$ backgrounds and ${\cal N}=4$ Conformal Quantum Mechanics

We present a new infinite family of Type IIB backgrounds with an AdS$_2$ factor, preserving ${\cal N}=4$ SUSY. For each member of the family we propose a precise dual Super Conformal Quantum Mechanics (SCQM). We provide holographic expressions for the number of vacua (the "central charge"), Chern-Simons terms and other non-perturbative aspects of the SCQM. We relate the "central charge" of the one-dimensional system with a combination of electric and magnetic fluxes in Type IIB. The Ramond-Ramond fluxes are used to propose an extremisation principle for the central charge. Other physical and geometrical aspects of these conformal quantum mechanics are analysed.

AdS$_2$ duals to ADHM quivers with Wilson lines

We discuss AdS$_2\times S^3\times{\text{CY}}_2\times I_ρ$ solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with 4 Poincaré supersymmetries. We propose explicit dual quiver quantum mechanics built out of D0 and D4 colour branes coupled to D4' and D8 flavour branes. We propose that these quivers describe the interactions of instantons and Wilson lines in 5d gauge theories with 8 Poincaré supersymmetries. Using the RR Maxwell fluxes of the solutions, conveniently put off-shell, we construct a functional from which the holographic central charge can be derived through a geometrical extremisation principle

$M$-strings and AdS$_3$ solutions to M-theory with small $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry

We construct a general class of (small) $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ superconformal solutions in M-theory of the form AdS$_3\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_k\times \text{CY}_2$, foliated over an interval. These solutions describe M-strings in M5-brane intersections. The $M$-strings support $(0,4)$ quiver CFTs that are in correspondence with our backgrounds. We compute the central charge and show that it scales linearly with the total number of $M$-strings. We introduce momentum charge, thus allowing for a description in terms of M(atrix) theory. Upon reduction to Type IIA, we find a new class of solutions with four Poincaré supercharges of the form AdS$_2\times S^3\times \text{CY}_2\times \mathcal{I}$, that we extend to the massive IIA case. We generalise our constructions to provide a complete class of AdS$_3$ solutions to M-theory with (0,4) supersymmetry and SU(2) structure. We also construct new $AdS_2\times S^3\times \text{M}_4\times \mathcal{I}$ solutions to massive IIA, with M$_4$ a 4d Kähler manifold and four Poincaré supercharges.

Spin 2 fluctuations in 1/4 BPS AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

In this paper we study spin 2 fluctuations around a warped $AdS_3 \times S^2 \times T^4 \times \mathcal{I}_ρ$ background in type IIA supergravity with small $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ supersymmetry. We find a class of fluctuations, which will be called \textit{universal}, that is independent of the background data and corresponds to operators with scaling dimension $Δ= 2l +2$, being $l$ the angular-momentum-quantum-number on the $S^2$ which realises the $SU(2)_R$ symmetry. We compute the central charge for $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ two-dimensional superconformal theories from the action of the spin 2 fluctuations.

Phases of $\mathbf{U(N_c)}$ QCD$_3$ from Type 0 Strings and Seiberg Duality

We propose an embedding of $U(N_c)$ QCD$_3$ with a Chern-Simons term in string theory. The UV gauge theory lives on the worldvolume of a Hanany-Witten brane configuration in type 0B string theory in the presence of Sagnotti's O$'3$ orientifold. We use the brane configuration to propose a magnetic Seiberg dual. We identify various phases of the magnetic theory with conjectured phases of QCD$_3$. In particular the symmetry breaking and bosonization phases are both associated with condensation of the dual squark field. We also discuss the abelian theory without Chern-Simons term and argue that flavour symmetry is not broken. Finally, we also predict novel type 0B string dynamics from QCD dynamics.

Holographic Aspects of Four Dimensional ${\cal N }=2$ SCFTs and their Marginal Deformations

We study the holographic description of ${\cal N}=2$ Super Conformal Field Theories in four dimensions first given by Gaiotto and Maldacena. We present new expressions that holographically calculate characteristic numbers of the CFT and associated Hanany-Witten set-ups, or more dynamical observables, like the central charge. A number of examples of varying complexity are studied and some proofs for these new expressions are presented. We repeat this treatment for the case of the marginally deformed Gaiotto-Maldacena theories, presenting an infinite family of new solutions and compute some of its observables. These new backgrounds rely on the solution of a Laplace equation and a boundary condition, encoding the kinematics of the original conformal field theory.

AC conductivity for a holographic Weyl Semimetal

We study the AC electrical conductivity at zero temperature in a holographic model for a Weyl semimetal. At small frequencies we observe a linear dependence in the frequency. The model shows a quantum phase transition between a topological semimetal (Weyl semimetal phase) with a non vanishing anomalous Hall conductivity and a trivial semimetal. The AC conductivity has an intermediate scaling due to the presence of a quantum critical region in the phase diagram of the system. The phase diagram is reconstructed using the scaling properties of the conductivity. We compare with the experimental data of [1502.03807] obtaining qualitative agreement.
