Successful Higgs inflation from combined nonminimal and derivative couplings

We propose an inflationary scenario based on the concurrent presence of non-minimal coupling (NMC) and generalized non-minimal derivative coupling (GNMDC), in the context of Higgs inflation. The combined construction maintains the advantages of the individual scenarios without sharing their disadvantages. In particular, a long inflationary phase can be easily achieved due to the gravitational friction effect owed to the GNMDC, without leading to trans-Planckian values and unitarity violation. Additionally, the tensor-to-scalar ratio remains to low values due to the NMC contribution. Finally, the instabilities related to the squared sound-speed of scalar perturbations, which plague the simple GNMDC scenarios, are now healed due to the domination of the NMC contribution and the damping of the GNMDC effects during the reheating era. These features make scenarios with nonminimal and derivative couplings to gravity successful candidates for the description of inflation.

Generalized Non-Minimal Derivative Coupling: Application to Inflation and Primordial Black Hole Production

We introduce inflationary models where the inflaton features a field dependent non-minimal derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor, that we name GNMDC. This Horndeski term gives new and distinguishable inflationary predictions in a framework that ameliorates possible problems related with gradient instabilities during the reheating stage. We examine the inflationary phenomenology using power law monomial and exponential potentials. We further elaborate on the implications of the inflaton-modulated GNMDC and construct GNMDC terms that can amplify the power spectrum of primordial perturbations at small scales, triggering PBH production. An attractive feature of the GNMDC is that inflation, as well as PBH production, can be implemented utilizing the Higgs potential.

Reconstruction of Cosmological Evolution in the Presence of Extra Dimensions

The model of Physics resulting from a Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction procedure offers very good dark matter candidates in the form of Light Kaluza-Klein Particles, and thus becomes relevant to Cosmology. In this work we recover a late-time cosmological picture, similar to that of the $Λ$CDM, in a multidimensional scenario, in the general framework of Universal Extra Dimensions. This is achieved by utilizing a special, Kasner-type solution that is analytically known, and acts as an attractor for a plethora of pairs of initial conditions of the usual and extra spatial Hubble parameters. The phenomenology of fundamental interactions dictates the stabilization of the extra dimensional evolution from a very early epoch in these scenarios. Without an explicit mechanism, this is achieved through particular behaviors of the usual and extra spatial fluids, which have to be motivated by a more fundamental theory.
